@@Nervarel Yeah, when the PS3 launched, the game press/PR machine kind of treated everything that came out for PS2 after that like vestigial limbs or something. There were some amazing games that fell into that window: Rogue Galaxy, Steampunk Chronicles, and more. Maybe if enough people keep bringing it up and buy the PS4 port, we'll get more of it someday.

I said it then, and I’ll say it now, “Rogue Galaxy” should have been pushed to the PS3. At least in the West. It came out like 2 months after the PS3’s release and was overshadowed by it. There was very little to play on the PS3 at launch and I think it would have sold much better.

I remember I bought Rogue Galaxy a few days after it came out. I had no idea what it was, I had never seen any ad's or articles about it before it came out. If they advertised it, they didn't advertise it much. I bought purely because the cover looked cool. When I took it home, I was completely hooked. I didn't play any other game until I completed it. And I did everything, even the ridiculous post game dungeon. I had to have that pirate outfit. This game will always hold a special place in my heart. It wasn't overly difficult a game, but I do remember dying a healthy number of times. Especially against the recurring antagonist/alter ego of Jaster. Some of the dungeons were absolutely bonkers though. With the worst being the towers. It was a time commitment, but if you haven't played it and you like to invest in your games with none of this new game bs there seems to be nowadays then i highly reccomend you give it a try. Plus its under $20 just about anywhere you go. So it won't break the bank. Might want to keep a guide on speed dial though. You may need it.

As someone who beat this without the guide in 2010 and beat the story under 20hrs. Playing it a second time (still without the guide) I noticed i missed a lot. None of the mazes really confused me except the Gladius Towers due to its size. My main concern is with the difficulty of certain monster spawns compared to boss battles. Giant monsters u have to jump to hit, hit u especially hard and are sometimes on par with Bosses. Not counting Mimics as to me they are just side challenges to get Coins.
My favorite part is of course post story. The Ghost Ship is my favorite location, Especially GS Extreme. If ur lucky u can beat GSE around 6 hrs. I have yet to get much lower than that. I'm curious what everyone else's favorite part is?
I do love this game and one day i hope to beat it 100%. The frog log and monster huntings take the longest to complete.

what a timing.. i´m playing this game now.. back in the day i just fought the first boss and now i´m in the middle of the game... the game is hard but the balance between action and turn battle its so incredible, i wish more rpgs got influenced by this game, and funny how it took two years to get a north american release because it got close to FF XII.. with similar design and some concepts... and the difficulty.. the game can be very easy if you use weapons according to your level, but if you are trying to craft different options your damage rate falls and becomes a much more challenging game... don´t know if this was an original intention but to me seems an interesting mechanic to balance the game. Wow i´m so into this game right now.. thanks for the video...

Rogue Galaxy really sounds right up my alley. I liked Dark Cloud (not 2, but that's a tale for another time); I love Final Fantasy XII, Skies of Arcadia, and sky pirates; the massive worlds of FFXII and Xenoblade are one of my reasons for loving those games, especially the latter; and lastly, I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, but love fantasy worlds with some sci-fi-like technology (like Xenoblade). I bought this game thanks to Erick's PS2 JRPG Ranking video, and that was a good choice, apparently.

  • @Xenoriddley

Regarding the development, the reason I feel it didn't sell well compared to DQ8, is because Rogue Galaxy was a new IP that most people would have been unaware of, whereas Dragon Quest 8 was part of a known franchise and already had a giant install base. Don't know why sony didn't realize this.

    • @nesoukkefka1741
      @nesoukkefka1741 4 года назад

Well I think what happen cause DQ8 had a giant install base... in Japan not that much in the west, turns out DQVIII before DQIX was the easily the most succesfull Dragon Quest in the west, it help making DQ more well known in the west and give a Level 5 a good reputation, Sony thought that following that the name of Level 5 will be enough to reach good sells and.... well we all know how it end up ^^

I invested a great deal of time in both and remember them fondly. I don't remember any difficulty issues with RG. Trust me, if a game developer saddles a game with a sadistic battle system, I immediately move on to something more user-friendly. I'm just not into punishment.

I have so many good memories of this game, but some mixed feelings too.
The game is so huge and so deep in many ways, but I feel like all the "Level 5-isms" are at their worst here: 60% of treasure chests are mimics, the character designs are more odd than interesting, the story feels rushed and some of the dungeons are... hoo boy, not fun.
Even so, the production quality and addictive nature of the weapon fusing, Insectron, or just the core gameplay loop simply can't be denied. This game still looks and plays timelessly

Fully finished the European version of this game (twice) during the PS2 era. Got every single achievement possible EXCEPT the one asking you to kill a certain amount of every single enemy encountered during the game. No problem doing that even in the last "hidden" dungeon, but didn't notice i had missed completing just ONE enemy in the beginning. Since enemies "upgrade" when you go back to previous places, i could never finish that achievement and thus get Lilika's final costume... 😅 I'd love to see that game get a proper remaster, and would definitely buy it !

The game rogue galaxy/earliër development dark cloud 3, still has an extra reference to dark cloud 2/ dark chronicle! Other than the early found dc3 name files. The ghost kid in Steve is Max, from dark cloud 2 better known as Maximilian! You guys never noticed? I noticed it right away when i first played Rogue galaxy when it was released back then, and saw the ghost kid coming out when Steve contacted the doctor. His father.
Also more references as being dark cloud 3 to dark cloud 1&2 are the copy "purple" atla stone on the arm of Seed that was made from the human dna data on the tablet, and actually had to be the Atla stone to use in georama to build/solve the portal to eden. And Jaster, after beïng turned into the Eden soldier/ star god, and opened the gate of eden, they talk about a legend of the star god. Able to move entire cities. Well guess what, you had to place/move buildings and create cities in georama in dc 1&2. So the star god was actually Toan in dark cloud 1 /maximilian dc2 or that wizard in dc 1? With the help of the atla stone.
There you have it. Rogue galaxy ACTUALLY is dark cloud 3/ dark chronicle 2(as being a sequel to dark chronicle/dark cloud 2). Just look at it the way they changed dark cloud 2 to dark chronicle in the EU.
I also forgot to mention, the flying moon ship you unlock in dark cloud 1 for flying to yellow drops? The moon? That is also used in rogue galaxy as a transport for flying to other planets. And some swords do resemble some from dc 1&2.

I'm sad that I no longer have the full set that came with the demo disc (or if I do still have the cloth flag, I've got it packed up somewhere I haven't checked). Pretty sure I still have the poster/flyer that came with the disc, but misplacing that flag really disappoints me to this day.
Hey, at least I still have the _Chains of Olympus_ Playstation Underground demo UMD complete with the pendent (or whatever you'd call it). That was another amazing thing of the time, we don't get demos like that anymore. Last demo I recall getting in a similar fashion was for _Monster Hunter Tri_ which I think was a Gamestop exclusive.

Great video i think it failed because it wasnt marketed enough for a new IP. It should of waited to release for the PS3 and PS2. That would of helped sales.

I think the remastered of rogue galaxy from ps2 are a drop down graphic image for ps4. It would be fun if it created in same level as final Fantasy in ps 4. That is mind blown.

A game which I still have yet to purchase, but it's on my list!
For my fellow RPG fans: RPG Black Friday sale news: Square Enix's store has tons of titles on sale for less than $4, including sealed PS1 games! I picked up FF IX, Origins, Chronicles, Anthology as well as Chrono Cross for less than $20! Ordered it in the morning and it already shipped by the afternoon! Switch eshop has some sweet RPG sales going on too..picked up the Grandia collection, Romance Saga 3, and Ys VIII.

This was without a doubt my favourite PS2 game.
I'm pretty curious to see the difference between the japanese versione and the international one in terms of difficulty, but nonetheless i thought it was quite the challenge (especially collecting those Hunter Coins ^^")
One interesting trivia you might not know regarding a mistranslation: in the Italian localization there was a big typo in the ingredients to make Duke Nightmare by putting the Adamon Raiser instead of the Demon Rouser (needless to say I got a little bit pissed by that, since I tried the "right combination" XD)
    Have a nice day ;)

This game looks actually still quite good thanks to the cell shading graphics.
There were other games with expanded western releases which came as some kind of directors cut to japan afterwards.
Seeing how it got localized by Sony themselves I don't think it got the japanese voices in the western release?
I think I need to look how expensive it is.

zenmclane It's a JRPG, it's 'supposed' to take up time. On top of that, this is one of the most content-rich JRPGs that I know of. I've poured over 100 hours into the game, and i still have a TON to do.

I just recently started collecting for the ps2. I started with dark cloud 1 & 2 then recently found rogue galaxy. While both the dark clouds are great in their own regards, rogue galaxy is in another league. Hands down my favorite ps2 rpg. They did everything right IMO. Voice acting, companions, extensive equipment and all viewable in game and in cutscenes. 5 stars please come back level 5 and make another one please.
