I remembered the time i play this game.. it was in 2002.. my uncle gave me his PS1 console as a present for me as i was able to keep my promise in becoming one of the top students in my class.. i was 10 years old at that time.. and this is basicly the first RPG i've ever played.. my native language is Malay, and i only had basic understanding of English at that time.. it was truly frustrating playing the game as sometimes i cant find ways to progress it hence i resulted to the use of "walkthroughs". Basic english is what i had and i remembered holding the dictionary while translating words that i didn't know in the 100 paged walkthrough. The more i want to progress the game, the more i needed to learn.. As time passes, my teachers and fellow classmates started to realize that my proficiency in english had became tremendously better thus making them wonder how i did it since i came from a poor household that had little educational background. They simply asked " How did you improved so much?" " I learned it from video games " i answered. ........... Fighting lavos at the end.. beating the game.. the credits rolled.. The ending theme played... Watching it.. a weird feeling .. a kind of bitterness, a kind of sadness.. my eyes started to tear up.. watching the end credits while holding the dictionary and the walkthrough in front of me.. It was a journey for me.. to complete it.. and i did it while struggling to understand a different language than my own.. hence, a feeling of accomplishment as well as a feeling of gratitude.. Thank you, Chrono Cross.. Thank you..
I really like how Guile and Magus float the same way instead of just running when we make the characters walk faster. I’m pretty sure that’s not coincidence by the developers (but I’m not saying they are the same just for this, but the similarities were there to intrigue since before fan theories).
i remember when i finished chrono cross, guile was in my party, and i remember seeing his ending segment and thinking "there's no way this guy isnt magus".
Actually, that part was wrong in this video, Guile's relationship with Magus was clarified. The developers confirmed Guile was supposed to be Magus/Gil in Chrono Cross, but with all the sea of characters in the game, and the direction the story was heading, they decided to scrap the idea. So yes, Guile was supposed to be Magus, but ended becoming his own character.
I like many of the original Japanese names better. Marscella > Marcy. Many of the name retranslations were due to the limited spaces in the character names.
i dont care what anyone says about chrono cross. i love this game whether or not it's a sequel it is also my favorite JRPG. one thing i would change tho is the battle theme music. it's the song you hear the most and it doesn't make me want to fight
people say chrono trigger is perfect except for the 25 year old graphics. they could do a much better job today then they did back then. They worked with what they had at the time. with todays technology things could be done much better. even an option for voices turned on or off could be possible.
This game is such a masterpiece. People keep praising FF (which is also a great series) but when I think of Square this is the game that comes to my mind instantly.
Man, the soundtrack of this game is surely god tier composition. i remember just walking around Another world overworld just to listen to its soundtrack..
Makes sense Kid being the main character. As she is the avatar for Schalla as the Frozen Flame is the avatar for Lavos. But Serge is like "link" between them. "The Arbiter of Fate" is not just a title, Serge is standing as representation for humanity on wether they can play the ancient melody of the Chrono Cross to prove they are one with the World and not "the offspring of Lavos", condemned to hurt Nature back and forth for progress as the reptitees were the natural supposed inheritors of the planet.
There's a mobile game called Another Eden, made by some of the people who worked on trigger and cross. Time travel is a big theme, even has a samurai frog guy, plus prehistoric people and futuristic sci-fi. They've been wanting to port it to the switch, so hopefully they do and it comes overseas.
It's an amazing game. To be honest, it drags a touch in some areas, but the art direction and soundtrack are phenomenal. Uematsu is the uncontested god of SE's library, but many of Yasunori Mitsuda's works are just transcendent. Will be listening to them for the rest of my life. Anyways, solid 9/10, definitely worth a playthrough.
there is a texture replacement pack that you can enhance the entire game graphics using RetroArch emulator. its fairly easy to do but does take about 30mins or so to set up. its beautiful to play with the graphic enhancements
This was some neat info, glad to have heard some of this prior to the remaster coming out. gonna have to look into more of these little details i might have missed before the new playthrough
No, they said this game was "not a sequel to Chrono Trigger, not a chrono trigger 2". So they weren't saying it wasn't a sequel at all. The game is very heavily intertwined with Chrono Trigger, taking place after/during Trigger, and the story moves on directly from the events of Crono and co in Trigger. The entire reason the Home World dimension exists is direcrly due to Lavos' defeat at Chrono and co.
Yes I HATE it when people say it isnt a sequel. Thought "directly" is... indirect. As all endings are canon, there is not a direct timeline, but many of them.
It's not a sequel. It's another story in that same universe. Much like Lord of the rings is NOT a sequel to the Hobbit. Shares elements, characters and has relation. Is a different story, it's own story.
HpCriticAll Trying to redefine the meaning of sequels eh? TLotR is a sequel to Hobbit, Tolkien even wrote it as such. CC in turn has so much of its plot come from the events of FF that it’s ridiculous to act like they’re not related. It’s not like thematic series like Final Fantasy where each numbered installment has no direct impact on the other. The PS1 & DS versions even added some plot points that further connected CT & CC
It literally says on the disk box that it is a sequel that takes place 20 years after chrono trigger. I don't know how it can be more clear. But that is the world we live in I guess, where people are dumb and make up their own narratives.
I used to fall asleep listening to a few select tracks from the soundtrack. It’s so good. My favorites will always be the opening song, “Time’s Scar” and “Star Stealing Girl” the best songs.
Didn't they even reference Radical Dreamers as another parallel dimension? In Chrono Cross, there are two main dimensions (Home World and Another World), Sprigg's pocket dimension, and the little dimensional bend. When you're in Chronopolis, you can find a room with one of the save points taken apart. In the dimension that FATE controlled (Another?), the save points are where people go get advice for their day - which is just FATE telling them what to do to preserve her timeline. In Home World, the save points are known as RECORDS instead, where people save their stories. FATE has access to read these, but not to talk to them. That is, FATE couldn't direct these people, but could see how that dimension/universe played out. ...but there's one taken apart on a table in Chronopolis like someone was fixing it or doing maintenance on it. But it mentions Serge, Kid, and Magus (I believe), and I always thought it must have been ONE Record of Fate that was actually recording from the Radical Dreamers dimension, meaning it is canon to Chrono Cross as one more parallel world. So that wouldn't make Chrono Cross a remake so much as it would make it a parallel to that world. And...Another World's overworld theme, to this day, brings tears to my eyes. EDIT: Also, you said "Serge, being the narrator in Radical Dreamers..." ...isn't it ironic that the former narrator became the SILENT Protagonist?
Yes, I remember something like that, it felt strange to me that Eric didn't talk about it... Anyway, the japanese name being "Alfador" as well as Magus' cat, could easily mean Magus disguised himself inspired by his cat too, doesn't it ?
I fell in love with this game wen I was younger and I put so many hours in this game and I played it so much I had to buy 3 different copy’s and went through 2 ps1 and played so much man also have it on a ps3 and still to this day have a copy with all of my games
"not a sequel" about a game that references the other game heavily at points. showing characters from the other game. mainly about a non playable character from the other game. and actualy has set peices such as nadia's bell the creators only started the "yeah nothing to do with eachother" thing to shut up angry fans because they killed off chrono marle and lucca
I played this game just recently thinking at first that the titles were just coincidental lol and when I heard the victory theme I was like "yeah this is Chrono Trigger"
Its really not. Just because it has the lore, and references the characters, and the only true physical connection in the game was Kid, technically Schala, which was nevwr properly explained or fleshed out, then threw in a random final boss that you only knew about in the last couple hours of the game, I'd say thats very loosely basex.
@@nonyabidness8676 dont get me wrong. I love the game. I still have it digitally on my ps3. It just didn't address any of the issues. You never figure out why Schala was there. Guile was supposed to be Magus keeping an eye on Kid/Schala but the creators felt it would take away too much from the story already. They didnt address the multiverse that they inevitably created in the original. It all felt rushed to give Chrono Trigger something after.
So glad I'm not the only one that absolutely adored Chrono Cross. It was the game I played(probably too young) when I was I think.. 10? It made me feel, and think, and want to see and know more of the world and game. It was the first game to really do that for me. Now, at 30, it's still one of my absolute favorites.
This is one of those games that is such a classic that any rpg enthusiast or anyone interested in japanese videogame history should know about it, and a shout-out in a form of a remake, sequel or whatever would totally land it nowadays. IKnowing the facts or not aside, it's a pleasure to watch this video since it nails the structure. Very interesting, very eloquent about what makes the game good, it gets personal but it's also professional... nice vid. From one Chrono fan from the other, I hereby salute you. Cheers.
Hands down one of the best RPGs ever made. It has one of the most satisfying combat systems even to this day. I’d love to see it adopted and modernized. Such a great system.
Great video Eric!!.. One of my all time favourite games too! I own a physical copy and the digital copy. I also bought the official walk-through😁. I have completed it dozens of times and still love coming back to it every now and then. Pure RPG with amazing music its legendary just like it's first game ..Chrono Trigger!🤤
I just recently beat this game in the most perfect way possible. Every single character, every single 7th lvl tech (even a fully evolved Pip), every single character has a rainbow weapon and rainbow mail. Now whenever I wanna re experience this game, I can load up a file and beat it in a couple hours.
I can't find where I heard about it, but apparently they used a script to write the general text for characters with accents ie. if the phrase was "This is a cat", the script would run it for Harle "Diz iz a cat." while Steena or someone else would say it differently.
While you CAN miss recruiting characters, that's not something to seriously worry about - like its predecessor, you're meant to play the game multiple times via New Game+. It's actually impossible to recruit all of the characters in a single playthrough.
I never got to play it fully way back when it launched, Not long ago I heard about the Eiyuden project and I've been playing the suikoden games as a celebration for the spiritual successor of the series.. I guess I'll give Chrono Cross a go this upcoming days, thanks Eric!
One more thing: It has surround sound, if you've got a compatible dolby system. Even though it's got the dolby surround logo on the case, it was easy to ignore and not notice this back in the day since really not many people had (or could afford) a proper surround sound system with a receiver with pro logic decoding. As you would expect of a game so heavily focused on sound, it's a real treat.
Youve convinced me to try the game out. All the possible party members sounds cool. Do you get to keep them to the end of the game or do most of them pop in and out?
@@rod9527 If I remember right, there's a trick to it on New Game Plus, when lynx is in a place between worlds after the vision in the opening cutscene actually happens that lets you pull through the recruits you made in playthrough one but for the life of me I can't remember how it works and I lost the guide book years ago.
I think about it like this: Kid is Chronopolis' guide for Serge to help humanity. Harle is Dinopolis' guide for Serge to help the demi humans and dragon kind. It was a theory and while it's not a flawless theory, there is some room for plausibility.
I made the Guile-Magus connection without knowing anything about Radical Dreamers. The hair, black magic affinity, mask and mystery all pointed in that direction- and from Chrono Trigger we are made to understand that Magus went searching for Schala
[SPOILERS] I don't remember where I heard it, but somewhere I picked up the impression that Harle, being the Dark Moon Dragon, could have been somehow deliberately patterned off of Schala by the dragons when they created her to free them. Meaning, while she's definitely not Kid's other version (also because we actually see the other version of Harle frozen in time in the Dead Sea), she could still be yet another clone. Just built entirely differently and...also a dragon, somehow. (Also she's listed as 18 and right-handed, whereas Kid is 16 and ambidextrous. The ages would kind of line up in that Harle must have been created first, but it makes the Lucca scene totally baffling unless Harle is in fact ageless or they just didn't have the resources to make a younger model.)
I feel like this could have been covered a little more in depth. Take Guile. There's actually concept art out there of him that looks a LOT more Magus like. I highly reccomend looking up the Chrono Compendium. Has a lot of cool info
Man CC has by far the best turn based battle system of all time. I hope we get a remaster at some point. Or even just a simple rerelease on current systems.
Dream of the shore near another world was my favorite track in this game. But overall really, the soundtrack was just amazing. Btw, I heard some Chrono Trigger music in the video. Not sure if that was actually in tje game or you just used it for fun?

I played this well before trigger. It is sort of what got me into jrpgs. Love chrono cross to bits. The chrono and ff series are my absolute favorite.

Actually, Lynx's Japanese name "Yamaneko" literally means "wildcat".
Mountain cat
and pochul is me dog pink !
It wasn't hinted that magus was gill in radical dreamers, it was outright stated at the end of the game.
It's pretty much confirmed yeah, Magus at the end of Chrono Trigger has amnesia, so he most likely remembers nothing of his past.
this is the first game in playstation where you could play as the villain.
20 years...I want so many people to know about this game but at least I got to experience such a wonderful story.
for 20 dollars theirs no reason for me not to get the remaster of chrono cross. i hope they remake chrono trigger although i doubt they will do that.
people say chrono trigger is perfect except for the 25 year old graphics. they could do a much better job today then they did back then. They worked with what they had at the time. with todays technology things could be done much better. even an option for voices turned on or off could be possible.
One of the games of my life. Great video, dude! Big hug from Brazil.
The game deserves a HD remake and added bonus content, chrono cross brings many of my childhood memories hope it comes back one day
This game is such a masterpiece. People keep praising FF (which is also a great series) but when I think of Square this is the game that comes to my mind instantly.
And now I'm going to have to pull out my PS2 and play some Chrono Cross again.
Man, the soundtrack of this game is surely god tier composition. i remember just walking around Another world overworld just to listen to its soundtrack..
Very interesting! Chrono Cross is my childhood, and I learned a lot about it from your video.
I love our generation of gaming. The new kids are being programed way differently . They won't see it the same.
Well, I think you answered a question I've had for a long while: Why we haven't seen a re-release of Chrono Cross? Licensing issues with the music.
With the successful kickstarter of Eiyuden chronicles, I can see some of the old Chrono crew coming back to complete the trilogy.
I would love that to happen, we can only hope. As fans need to speak it into existence, do something to get our voices heard.
Kurai Kusanagi I’m gonna check it out now sounds promising.
I've never played it but it looks like I'm missing out. They should bring it to Steam along with all PS games 😊
I think its on ps3. Or amazon for a fair price for ps1
It's an amazing game. To be honest, it drags a touch in some areas, but the art direction and soundtrack are phenomenal. Uematsu is the uncontested god of SE's library, but many of Yasunori Mitsuda's works are just transcendent. Will be listening to them for the rest of my life.
Anyways, solid 9/10, definitely worth a playthrough.
there is a texture replacement pack that you can enhance the entire game graphics using RetroArch emulator. its fairly easy to do but does take about 30mins or so to set up. its beautiful to play with the graphic enhancements
heres the tutorial to replace the textures. ruclips.net/video/EyJPe84Kzcw/видео.html
it's my favorite game of all time, but i'm biased the level of nostalgia is vomit-inducing whenever i hear even a tinge of the music lol
“Chrono Cross is not a sequel to Chrono Trigger”
Bull many of the events in Cross happened as a result of what directly happened in Trigger
HpCriticAll
Trying to redefine the meaning of sequels eh?
TLotR is a sequel to Hobbit, Tolkien even wrote it as such. CC in turn has so much of its plot come from the events of FF that it’s ridiculous to act like they’re not related. It’s not like thematic series like Final Fantasy where each numbered installment has no direct impact on the other. The PS1 & DS versions even added some plot points that further connected CT & CC
It literally says on the disk box that it is a sequel that takes place 20 years after chrono trigger. I don't know how it can be more clear. But that is the world we live in I guess, where people are dumb and make up their own narratives.
Call it what you want but without a third title to bring them together it's mostly (although not entirely) two different stories.
One of my favorite RPG's of all time. Very underrated.
i played it so much i had to buy a new copy
How I can play that game in 2020?
Other then buying a copy for ps1 not sure
I used to fall asleep listening to a few select tracks from the soundtrack. It’s so good.
My favorites will always be the opening song, “Time’s Scar” and “Star Stealing Girl” the best songs.
It definitely is a sequel whether the creators want to accept it or not, it just is by definition what a sequel is
Cross is definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Great video! 👍🏾
The main story, the soundtracks, characters backstory, the world, this game is everything in my childhood
"not a sequel" about a game that references the other game heavily at points. showing characters from the other game. mainly about a non playable character from the other game. and actualy has set peices such as nadia's bell
the creators only started the "yeah nothing to do with eachother" thing to shut up angry fans because they killed off chrono marle and lucca
@@QuackTape21 dude you actually see crono and lucca in Chrono Cross.
@@robertoveroyguitar I know. But if uou didnt already know this was a sequel...youd think who the fuck are these kids? Which is why I say its loose
Cheers.
A true role playing game, that truly still has a role to play!! #ThankYou
Hands down one of the best RPGs ever made. It has one of the most satisfying combat systems even to this day. I’d love to see it adopted and modernized. Such a great system.
One of my all time favorites definitely needs a new one ❤️
One of my absolute favorites. It's genuinely beautiful. Loved it from beginning to end.
Please bring back Chrono Break, Square !!
I loved this game, got it imported when i was younger. Need to get it again :)
I just recently beat this game in the most perfect way possible. Every single character, every single 7th lvl tech (even a fully evolved Pip), every single character has a rainbow weapon and rainbow mail. Now whenever I wanna re experience this game, I can load up a file and beat it in a couple hours.
When the video started and the music played; I almost teared up from sheer nostalgia.
My first ever Rpg game that I've played.
BIG question... which part is the cinematic from 0:29? I´m a huge fan but never been able to see it in the gameplay. Any ideas?
The entire sound track to this game gets me every single time.
I can't find where I heard about it, but apparently they used a script to write the general text for characters with accents ie. if the phrase was "This is a cat", the script would run it for Harle "Diz iz a cat." while Steena or someone else would say it differently.
This game deserve to have a REMAKE.. Legendary.
I really want to play this game, but I get nervous about the fact that there are characters that you can miss recruiting.
While you CAN miss recruiting characters, that's not something to seriously worry about - like its predecessor, you're meant to play the game multiple times via New Game+. It's actually impossible to recruit all of the characters in a single playthrough.
I'm gonna try it again. I think it's on pstv?
Just saying everytime youtube recommends a video on a old game that was made in the past week theres like a remake announcement just around the corner
Finally some love given to this great game! Thanks man! Awesome video! \o/
Youve convinced me to try the game out. All the possible party members sounds cool. Do you get to keep them to the end of the game or do most of them pop in and out?
You keep them but You can't have them all in one playthrough, since there are multiple paths with different characters.
Would love a Remake of this. I have some fond Memories of Chrono Cross
oh Erick...what a time to be alive
Just got mine today 😊 looking forward to it😁
I think about it like this:
Kid is Chronopolis' guide for Serge to help humanity.
Harle is Dinopolis' guide for Serge to help the demi humans and dragon kind.
It was a theory and while it's not a flawless theory, there is some room for plausibility.
I like how you employed the 'super sekrit' scene in the radical dreamers game(accessed through the already secret music menu). Glorious.
I made the Guile-Magus connection without knowing anything about Radical Dreamers.
The hair, black magic affinity, mask and mystery all pointed in that direction- and from Chrono Trigger we are made to understand that Magus went searching for Schala
Always nice to see more Chrono Cross content. The game is criminally underrepresented.
I love how you pronounced Peripheral
Amazing sound track as well, I miss the characters. We need a remaster.
This is so informative, thanks, man!
I feel like this could have been covered a little more in depth.
Take Guile. There's actually concept art out there of him that looks a LOT more Magus like.
I highly reccomend looking up the Chrono Compendium. Has a lot of cool info
I loved this video, the theories about Harle and Kid, and specially the Suikoden referece
there is a crossover between Chrono Cross and one mobile game which is Another Eden
“Daring” is a great descriptor because not all the gameplay mechanics worked well or were intuitive for new players. OST is one of the greatest tho
Man CC has by far the best turn based battle system of all time.
I hope we get a remaster at some point.
Or even just a simple rerelease on current systems.
The sound track for the game is amazing. I could stay at one area just to listen to the soundtrack.
Best gaming experience ever. As for the music, words just cannot express it.
This was fun, thanks for the video. Good job. :)
Dream of the shore near another world was my favorite track in this game. But overall really, the soundtrack was just amazing.
Btw, I heard some Chrono Trigger music in the video. Not sure if that was actually in tje game or you just used it for fun?
Some of Chrono Trigger's music was used in Chrono Cross.
@@johntracy72 thanks! I played CC first and only played CT several years later.
To those wishing for Chrono Cross HD remaster, try google Chrono Cross AI upscaling. Some fans are looking into upscaling Chrono Cross background using the same AI used in Final Fantasy IX.
