I finished the game yesterday. It only took me 7.5 years😘
jksmasknz thats me and persona 5 lol
Unicorns and Compliments Me too.. 😂
KH1 Ps2 took me 4 years
Same here
Value for money..
I remember this game being touted as "Play what you see with no load times!" I was impressed at the time of it..
Rogue Galaxy is such an amazing game!
Loved this game on PS2, did almost everything. Been playing on my PS4 since I got it on sale, the game still holds up to me.
Everything Level 5 touches turns to gold. In fact Dragon quest 8 is the perfect example of a traditional JRPG to me.
white knight chronicles?
Johnny Westbrook white knight chronicles is just bronze lol
Johnny Westbrook I love dark cloud 1 & 2, nino no kuni, dq8. Everything level 5 touches I’ve liked except for white knight chronicles for some reason. I bought it on release date but could never get into it
Honnestly DQVIII is the only Level 5's game I really love.
DQVIII is a really good game.
I still long for Dark Cloud 3.
Chase Plays Some Games Please don't remind me. I've wanted that game to be a thing for a long time.
Same
This game is part of my teenage years. This, Shadow Hearts and Kingdom Hearts are the only games that made me really sympathise with the characters. By the end of this, I was soooo rooting for each character to be fulfilled and I was sooo into it.
I wish I would find similar games but more modern to give me the same feeling.
Konstantinos Pavlopoulos the shadow Hearts series need a remastered collection and a new game for the series.
Man, you must have missed the Dark Cloud 2. The same developer made the game, with very great story.
Try it. Its not yet late to fill in the half of your Teenage PS2 life. 😊
Nice review! This one has been stuck in my backlog for a long time and I look forward to the day I finally sit down with it.
I like the way you do your reviews, you tell what most gamers want to hear, plus you sold me on this game and the dark cloud games that's why I'm hitting the subscribe button, keep up the good work.
Yet again an awesome video. I loved the game back in the day. But honestly, you deserve so much more attention. I pretty much looked trough your whole Channel since i discovered it a few weeks ago. Such great taste in games and a great presentation - your videos are incredible enjoyable. Plus, you helped me to find some missing pieces for my own rpg collection, so thank you for that!
Greetings from Germany :)
I remember reading the 5/5 review in Gamepro magazine and the graphics for the time absolutely blew my mind and I had to get it. I always thought of the story as a Saturday morning anime, so with that in mind it kept me intrigued until the end. To this day I consider it in my top 10 Jrpgs of all time
hello alright, I do rogue Galaxy series on my channel. take a look. Goodbye
This is easily top 3 jrpg of all times if not the best
Worked out being great timing for a Rogue Galaxy review with the PS4 release. Great game and another great review!
Nice review man. I wasn't expecting much when I got the game, but I really got into it. It turned out to be a great purchase in the end.
amazing channel man. love the review
I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're my favorite JRPG reviewer on this platform. You have a soothing voice and a charismatic sound to back it up. Keep up the good stuff man 👍
hello alright, I do rogue Galaxy series on my channel. take a look. Goodbye
@@rodrigosavepoint I don't speak your language so, no
Hey Derek, it's been a long time since I've commented on ANY of your videos! Been super busy with a lot of stuff in life, but when I saw that you uploaded a review on Rogue Galaxy, I HAD to check it out! I was never able to get far in Rogue Galaxy, but I would love to get a copy of Rogue Galaxy one of these days and do a playthrough eventually ^.^
Ah, Level 5 RPGs are such a joy. You gonna give Ni No Kuni or Yokai Watch or LBX a look in the future?
Great review, I particularly liked your fun drawings :)
Heh, thanks +John A. Galvan! I did something similar in my Lufia review a long while back, and it seemed a good way to illustrate something without showing obvious death scene spoilers! :)
The timing of this video is PERFECT with the re-release on PS4
Finally a review of yours I agree with. Nicely done.
Very good review man, picking this up for 6$ for my PS4, it's on flash sale this weekend people, hurry just a few hours left!
+Prashun 'PC' Chakraborty found this review after seeing the sale too
Nah, it looks better on pcsx2 and I already bought it once for ps2
3.44 rn on mid year sale
@@paxhumana2015 ah yes how dare he say it looks better on pcsx2 grave crime he did. Should be punished for saying his opinion.
Damn I'm 3 years late....
Good timing with this review since Rogue Galaxy is coming out on PS4 very soon. Nice finding your channel so I just subscribed.
Always wondered what this game was like.
Thanks for the highly detailed input, SD!
Cool review. Can't wait to play it myself.
Awesome review, makes me wanna order a copy for myself!
Hey Derek, have you played/heard of The Legend of Heroes jrpg series? The series as a whole is giant but it is branched off into different names and sub series. More particularly the Trails in the Sky games? The second game just got ported over by Xseed little over a month ago and could use more fans/love from the jrpg community. Anyways great review on Rogue Galaxy, a game I played when it was first released but it never grabbed and pulled me in so I never completed it sadly.
Love this game ever since I was a kid. I fully agree with everything you said and I play this game over and over again. I'm definitely gonna check out the rest of your channel.
Hi David 😂😂😂
@@Wildcatman8 how did you even find my comment from a year ago lmfaooo!
Bought this for my PS4, what I liked is the added achievements (don't know if the ps4 does this for all the ps2 games they put on there) adds a little more desire to do a lot of the side stuff, though I recommand a guide to do some of the side stuff, that factory...ugh
But yeah I loved this game, I wish we could get a sequel or something in this universe, I could see a lot of potential, hell even an anime would have been awesome, hell it felt like an anime
also by the way on 8/8/2020 I got every PS4 achievement in the game. yes that includes the ghost ship, the leveling up the special star swords, the insect arena, and of course filling up everyone's slots
Defientally was a fun trip LOL
just subscribed.keep up the good work derek
great video man!
This was one of those hidden gems for me I really enjoyed exploring this game.
This is a game I've came across many times during game hunting, but never knew anything about it so I've always passed on it. Now I feel silly, cause this looks pretty sweet. Whelp, here's another game to add to the list. Thanks for another fantastic review!
A game from the PS2 era has Level-5 marked on the box and you pass it up? For shame :P
I do feel great shame for this incompetence, but I will make up for it I promise!
Sony recently trademarked it, so it'll likely be emulated on ps4 with a bunch of ps2 games
Sergio Gerard Yup. A video just got uploaded on PlayStation's RUclips channel showing games like Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud and Arc the Lad among others.
Tanerion like clockwork
Great review! I'm glad you mentioned the problems with the writing but still gave the game a chance.
Easy 9/10 from me. Adore this developer. I might need a PS2 now for Radiata Stories and Valkyrie Profile 2.
I've had this game on my shelf for some years thanks to some friends giving me their game collections, i figured to give it a shot but decided to watch a review of the game first. now i want to play the game
That's awesome, have fun!
@@SuperDerek I will! ^w^ but it'll have to be tomorrow XD too late at this point
any advice would be helpful ^w^
I have this game, and have been meaning to actually play through it FOR YEARS but never got around to it. Loved your review for it, and maybe one of these days i'll actually play through it. It's a shame to hear that it's got pacing problems.
What is the song at the end of the video that starts at 8:34 ? EDIT: Nevermind, answered my own question. It's "Dreaming My Way Home ~ Ending Theme" from the game's soundtrack.
excellent review bud!
Thanks +High Level Reviews !
40 hours in now, I bought it years ago, just never played it. Cool treat to be able to play it now.
Thanks, its now available on PS 4+ both dark cloud games.
Hi Derek, I can't find a single review on RUclips for the PS1 RPG Technomage: Return to Eternia. Would be great to hear your thoughts on it!
+theflyingninja1 I'd love to give it a shot! Sadly, the game appears to be an EU exclusive. I'll need to see if I can find a way of playing a copy here in the US, but that might take a while.
My favourite PS2 game, great review.
+Jordan1000 Thanks Jordan! Have you checked out Dark Cloud 2 by chance?
+SuperDerek RPGs It's definitely on my 'to play' list after watching your review on it last week. It does look amazing.
Came to the channel from SNES Drunk's shoutout, saw this review, knew I had to watch it. It being from the same guy who gave us Dark Cloud 2, now I know why I liked Rogue Galaxy so much.
Oh dude, SNESDrunk gave me a shout-out?! That's awesome!
@@SuperDerek Yeah, I had to find you in the comments of that video as he didn't have a link to your channel, but, I came here nonetheless.
oops, was a bit caught up with things and forgot to check RUclips for your review. I loved those drawings, and was glad you gave Tomohito Nishiura a nod for his excellent compositions.
I'm interested to see what you think of Morrowind, as the game seems to have something of a Marmite-like quality to it (you either love it or you hate it sort of thing).
just got this since I love Level 5 and reviews have pretty much all stated that the gameplay is fun even if the story/characters is lacking. I love a space traveling scope so I'm excited. After this game then it's time to ty Dark Cloud 2!
hello alright, I do rogue Galaxy series on my channel. take a look. Goodbye
Thank you a lot for describing the frustrations from Rogue Galaxy's story. They may be mild, but it is a selling point for me.
I was just about to comment to ask about this game, love ya Derek
D'awe shucks, thanks for watching Poo Mcgee. :)
Im surprised I never heard of this game as a teenager back then, playing it right now and liking it.
Loved the review! This is a game I own and need to play someday. Have you ever played Radiata Stories, Derek? I'd love to see a review of that one. I think its pretty underrated and overlooked.
Yaaaaaasss that's my most favorite game of all time! Too bad they didn't want to make a sequel
I played this when i was a teen 15 years ago. Now replaying it on ps4 damn brings back memories. Till i unlockef the bug catcher . forgot all about thay
hello alright, I do rogue Galaxy series on my channel. take a look. Goodbye
Same, I got the game around that age too. Replaying it ps4 starting today, just reached the start of rosencaster prison. Its as good as i remember.
Awesome to hear it lives up to the hype for us Dark Cloud 2 fanatics. Sounds like I need to put some time aside and play it.
Very cool review, Got a sub :)
I've been going on a old rpg binge buying all the games I loved playing I bought this dark cloud 1&2, Okami, Star Ocean and a couple Final fantasy games still need to get a bunch more it's fun revisiting them
I loving the intros on these
Dark Cloud 3: The Zodiac Age
Derek I think if we met IRL we would be buds. Haha. Good content my dude.
Someone that actually reviews games? :D subbed
One of the BEST games hands down, such an achievement!!
I have yet to play Rogue Galaxy, I know, shame on me. I loved playing the Dark Cloud games, so I'm certain that I would love giving this game a go as well. :) I loved the little sketches in this review, showing the relationship, or lack thereof, between characters. "Oh no! There's a sword through your chest!... Sucks to be you." :P Haha.
Would it be possible to give a review on Final fantasy Dissidia and Dissidia 12.?
Love the cartoons and graph!
Your review is pretty spot on. Alot of my issues I had with this game were the story, pacing, and the fact a lot of enemies can k.o. your team right away if you're not careful. Still, I enjoyed it Rogue Galaxy! It was pretty fun to play. I consider it better then Dark Cloud 2. And even if Rogue Galaxy's story is bad or incoherent, I prefer it over Dark Cloud 2's really cheesy story!
Nice review.
Great review, this game and Dark Cloud 2 remind me of Threads of Fate a lot lol.
It had quite a selection of voice cast
All many who would later get awesome images
aaawh come on. no mention of the abundance of mini games it has? the factory, the bug hunting and bug chest, and another fun mini games you can do. I forgot because it's already around 8 years after I last played this game but the amount of gameplay offered by this game still stay in memory
Is this cell shaded? Looks to have more depth in it to me. Anyways, cool review! Seems like a decent game. It's on ps4 now I think
So when will you review romancing saga?
Do you recomend the game?It was released for the PS4 and I was thinking to buy it.
+zanychelly I do! I would recommend Dark Cloud 2 first though, since I think it's a slightly better game, but Rogue Galaxy is awesome, and I'd say it's worthy of a download. :)
I remeber having the demo for this game but couldn't remember the name of it and spent 3 years looking for it
I still listen to the soundtrack.
Ah, I love this game~
Also, in the time since this review, it has been rereleased digitally for PS4, with Trophy support to boot
I'm so tired of the pro new gen games. This is a welcomed joy. I am having fun!! Something newer games FORGET. I love the music too. Bought it for $7.49 for my ps4. Thank you for the review - very good. You have a beautiful voice to do these videos.
There is just something about Level 5 games, once you start you can't put it down.
Unless your console broke down and I'm over here depressed cause I'm in a playthrough of dark cloud 2.
Thanks for great review, buying this game it on PS4 :)
I lack to play Rouge galaxy. I would like that you do a review of Grandia 3, I have considered that is good game, obviously, it isn't perfect. Would be amazing know your opinion.
I think the emotion response it was trying to elicit was the same as in dark cloud 2, where in the death of a major character happened in Chapters 3, 5, and 7. The difference being in that Dark cloud 2 built up these characters the best they could before offing them. No matter how many times I play DC2, Master Crest's death will always manage to bring a tear to my eyes because you get to see the impact it has on the surrounding characters Lyn is crushed, and it shows. It also effects you, because you spent hours doing everything you can; Fighting bosses, time traveling, Fighting Gaspard and those goddamned Evil Flames. Hell, you have to sit through Monica's unskippable Spheda lecture. And then, as soon as you're ready to save the day and bring the legendary sage to glory, it's all ripped away from you in his final act of heroism. The way you describe it, Rogue Galaxy does the exact same thing, but crams it down within a couple of minutes.
I played it so many times to this day. And I got it when it came out.
Dark Chronicle is a top game for me, so I should reeally check this one out some time. Thanks for sharing this. Looks amazing
Actually, as I own Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII, and Rogue Galaxy, the Revelation Flow actually shares more in common with the License Board of Final Fantasy XII than it does with the Sphere Grid of Final Fantasy X and X-2, SuperDerek RPGs.
You're probably right, I never did throw much time into FFXII. :)
This is my favorite RPG ever, I love this game so much
adventure... i play this when i was high school... and i love it,,, at that time...
I’ve had this game for years. Maybe I should finally play it.
you should review the shadow hearts series. those are some of my favorites for the ps2
Would be nice if Closed-Captioning could be added to this video (like with the Legend of Dragoon and Dark Cloud 2 videos), and possibly any other videos on this channel that use only the "auto-generated" captions (which suck). Thanks! I like your work!
Thank you for letting me know they weren't showing. Looks like I had them uploaded 2 years ago, but forgot to flip the switch to turn them on. They are live now, I hope this helps! :)
There, all videos in "The Game Collection" are now complete with closed captions. I hope that helps! And thanks again for letting me know! :)
Thanks very much! Appreciate it! 😀
I remember buying this game for ps2, but playing it only once with me and my father. I somehow lost the game, and could not find it till this day. I have the poster though.
My favorite rpg of the ps2. Even 15 years later when I’m still playing games like ff14, this is by far one of my favorite game ever
How about a sky's of arcadia 1 & 2 & the other one for Gamecube as well as the Dreamcast originals ? I'm not sure if there were PlayStation ports but that would be good too !
I love Rogue Galaxy. Your review is spot on. Pionts all the problems with the game. Still very fun game
Im praying for Ni no kuni 2, its the next Dark Cloud in my opinion. Even tho im hoping for Dark Cloud 3 its long time but unexpected
Despite unseeing it's heavy star wars use in my 1st playthrough gunna give it another chance...
PS2 is my favorite and every loves it, gunna try and stick through it till the end and get back to u bud
On a sidenote, what do you think of the Kingdom Hearts series?
+Tartar Keeping in mind that it's been maybe 10 years since I played them... My opinion is generally favorable, though I think there was something I didn't like about the controls in I that I recall they fixed in II, it may have been camera-related. I also recall disliking that they removed building gumi ships, which was I remember being one of my favorite parts of KH1. Because I didn't play any of the handheld titles, the start of KHII was really confusing, but I eventually got over it.
The reason it's important to note that I played them last over 10 years ago is because it was long before I played critically, observantly. and my opinions of it now are through the eyes of someone less discerning. I'm thinking about revisiting the series in the HD ports to the PS3. Hopefully they hold up! :)
SuperDerek RPGs You should try Kingdom Hearts 2 if you get the chance. It improved on everything KH1 did, although the Gummi ship building has been removed (although I liked this since it allowed them to make some more focused and better Gummi ship missions).
+Tartar I actually prefer KH1 a lot. One reason is that it better transports the Disney charme with the simple love message in contrast to KH2's plot with its bigger focus on the quite generic pseudo cool anime like Organization XIII. That stuff totally missed the point of KH for me, and what was good because it was different and light hearted became more of the common Japanese storytelling with overstyled villains. The second reason is that I found the boss battles to have too many context sensitive commands that would be required and turn much of the battles into passive viewing sessions. I ended up being somewhat disappointed by KH2, and for me it has been a one hit wonder to this day, with a bunch of okay sequels and spin-offs. Very much like Disney movies tend to be followed by lesser direct to video sequels.
108Stars The thing I prefer with the sequel is the combat. It's much more fluid and visceral and controls better in general. I'll also take the final battle vs Xenmas over the Ansem boss fight any time.
+Tartar I notice with KH I absolutely love the theme of the game. Revisiting all the Disney worlds I have grown up with is so nostalgic. But, to be honest I really don't like the combat. You are right that it was improved in KHII however. Oddly enough my favorite KH game is Birth by Sleep on PSP. I loved the leveling system in that game and felt it was a huge improvement over the others in terms of combat.
Except for the ending this is one of the greatest PS2 RPG's in existence.
Please note how I said "One Of". Not "the" best, "One of".
God, I wish more games like Level 5s PS2 stuff were made or even still being made. They were all so damn good.
How does the battle system feel compared to SO4? It looks comparable, but with a little Chrono Trigger thrown in.
+Dallas Strimple (Kaslo25) Haven't had a chance to play SO4. so I can't really say. Sorry!
+Dallas Strimple (Kaslo25) SO4 Star Ocean 4? If so, battle system to like the Tales of series but you can freely move around and has the best Party AI in any Tales like combat system. Put 120 hours into like it was nothing. Played it for two weeks np.
You dropped the ball with this review. Bad pacing? Horrible writing? This game is amazing through and through.
+red jean I'm sorry that we disagree, I'm just trying to provide a review honest to my experience. -- But rest assured that I still really enjoyed the game despite the flaws. :)
Playing the game for the first time in almost 10 years. I definitely need to get used to the controls again. Sad that I really don't get a lot of time with it.
That's my one gripe out this game is the combat. I like the action/rpg part. But the stupid amounts of damage you and your party members constantly take. I feel like I'm CONSTANTLY buying metric ass tons of healing potions, not so much for myself, but to keep my party afloat. And every. single. battle. is like that.
Other than that? Great game!
Yeah the combat is dumb :
-Random are nothing but AoE spell spam
-Boss just spam Illusion Sword and any character that has an Attack Boosting ability.
And in any case if you take damage just use Items, really there's nothing more to the combat than that.
How I feel about Star Ocean 3. My money always used up after every trip back to town lol. Like I gained nothing! Stupid ai
This looks awesome! Space? Pirates? Adventure? Sign me up! Used copy away, also Treasure Planet vibes, but a game!
the graphecs r great, wow
The bug mini game was amazing
