Just wanted to provide some clarification about the PS4 versions of Spyro since this keeps coming up in the comments. The launch release was similar to the Switch version in that a download was required. However the 2019 PS4 reprint included all games on the disc. You can only identify this if you open the game up and see a 2019 copyright on the disc, the reprint's box art remained unchanged. Hope this detail helps others, I'm not sure if this applies to PAL or different regions, but this is the case for the North American version. Edit: apparently a similar reprint happened in the PAL region as well.
Oof this reminded me of Ori games on switch... I bought the will of the wisp physical then the other digital (because of sale). What comes next was they've released a physical copy with both games on the cart 😆
Thats cool over here with the PAL region I got has the games downloaded and did look online for the 2019 reprint for PAL region as I am from there and no luck.
Definitely this for me. I had so much stuff that I sold too early. Whenever I sell or trade in games, I try to put the money I make back into gaming. (Though I very rarely sell or trade in games anymore.) Some of the games I got rid of too early, I wish I would have held onto because of monetary reasons and then there are some games I wish I hadn't gotten rid of because of sentimental reasons. Ten years ago, I told myself that everything I buy or get as a gift pertaining to gaming, I'm keeping and I've stuck with that to this day. I guess it was just a phase I was going through and I think a lot of people who are into gaming and collecting go through it at some point as well.
As someone who is very into media and product preservation and collecting, i love this channel! We need more of this kind of content, education on region locks and incomplete physical media and stuff like that. Looks like this might be the video that blows up too! 🥳
I agree. I don’t go through all the trouble of buying a physical copy just to be forced to download gigabytes of data. I almost returned my copy of the Spyro Trilogy.
I feel you on lesson number 8. When I got Final Fantasy X I didn’t know that X-2 was a download code nor did I know that the Asian version had both games on cart. I’ll probably end up double dipping on that one just to have X-2 on cart.
This was one of my successful wait to buys. I did import the SE Asian version for both ff 7 & 8 and ff X & X-2. Yes Nintendo has bigger cartridges but nobody uses them. Nintendo doesn't even use them.
I didn't know that they did this on Switch until this comment. That's interesting. I already have the X-2 Asian English version for Vita on a standalone cart, so I don't need the Switch version. But it's cool to have that option. Why do they do this crap? No physical, no purchase for me. And I am mostly into indies nowadays except for a few Japanese RPGs. If the game isn't playable without a patch, I don't buy it. I'm tired of these companies trying to force digital on everyone.
@@medmuscle because they know consumers would complain if you had to pay 70 USD for a switch game. The extra cost of a bigger game cartridge would be passed to the consumer.
@@champdancer19 I don't buy that response. The install size of both games combined is 26.9 GB, which is far from massive. Even if what you said was true, they could have done a fairly modest release. Then if copies ran out, they could print some more. They know that enthusiasts want these physically. IMO, $70 is plenty fair nowadays anyway. New games have been $60 for decades now. That's considering the game is FINISHED on day one. I would be perfectly fine with digital releases coming out 3 months before physical so that any patches are on disc/cart. Just finish the darn game. It's criminal what SE did with the Pixel Remaster. I was able to preorder an Asian English version for Switch from Play Asia. Soon enough, I will no longer support SE. Watch them fk up FF16.
I’ve really been struggling with FOMO lately, especially since there have been a lot of shortages of physical copies at the stores I shop at. I missed up out on some 1st party 3DS games back in the day and I just can’t seem to shake that fear of missing out on a non-scuffed box or complete set. You’re completely right about waiting though, the discounts that happen later are too good to pass up. Great video!
So I just googled FOMO and yeh, I suffer this and it’s absolute hell. Right now, I have a v2 neon blue red switch. Loved it for 8 months then stopped playing. I’m now interested in buying a switch Oled and I want a particular special edition limited and I’m having massive fear of missing out. Like, I might not even get back into switch but the fear of this certain special edition Oled switch, selling out before I buy, really makes me feel a certain way and it isn’t good. I’ve been stuck in fucking limbo, for weeks, trying to decide to buy Oled switch or not. 1 min I’m like, yeh just buy it and if you don’t love, sell for good price and next I’m like, Na just forget about it. The Oled screen and extra screen size, isn’t a big deal. So I’m more thinking just buy it before it sells out and if I don’t like or just don’t use, sell it. I just feel like an absolute idiot. I’m a man, sitting here, panicking about a special edition switch, selling out before i buy it. I know that I would be really annoyed if that happened because I wouldn’t be happy enough with basic model. Again, it’s only a bloody design on the switch. Why am I being such an idiot over this? 😭😭😭😭
lol 😂 There are some games I can see myself continuing to double dip on (i.e. Trails 😅) but I'm hoping not to extend this to too many other franchises in the future 😅 And thanks! I hope hope you have a fantastic weekend too 😄
These are great tips, especially that last one about avoiding 3rd party sellers using stock photos. I didn't even notice I had a PAL copy of DK Tropical Freeze until I noticed the font on the spine was *slightly* different from my other games. Now I can't unsee it!
The new background is great! I love the small details you put into it I love using apps to watch for price drops! I also check things on my want list semi frequently. Managed to get Ghost of Tsushima for 19.96 from full price!! It is possible to get deals but it definitely takes a lot of patience as you said and FOMO definitely gets me more often than not🤭. If you have more double dipped games it might be fun to see an entire video about that
Thanks! I'm pleased with how the shelves are shaping up too :) Those deal apps and following social media deal accounts can be great! Though they sometimes get you to purchase games you may not be ready to make purchases for I've found 😅 And haha I have many more double dipped games so I can look into framing a video around them eventually 😂
Very simple yet insightful and helpful points. These are good principles to follow in most practices and they also apply to game collecting. FOMO of special collectors editions or limited run prints are a big one for me and I find myself spending more time overthinking these details when I should just buy to enjoy the game itself.
When we buy physical i really dislike getting copies that have giant region specific restriction stickers. Like why do they need to be so big? Do it how the ESRB does and make it smaller in black and white! This is a great video that im sure a part 2 could be born. I def have some examples of buying too soon or waiting too long. I bought a Pal version of Ys VIII because the north american ones were getting out of control, only to find Falcom reprinting it and even porting it to PS5. Thanks for this video :-)
The large ones like the German USK stickers can be really distracting! It's unfortunate how those are mandatory over there. And haha yup I can definitely see a part 2 coming at some point 😅
And i cant stand not having the usk on it. Its a nice Logo and they usually have the alternate Cover without anything included anyway. Its all a matter of what you are used to.
I think it's because you are used to the ESRB logo and therefore think the other logos are eyesores. I'm from Aus and so all the games that have the Aus rating logo look perfect to me, but ESRB logos look horrible ugly against the game artwork.
Hearing blue destination in the background got me choked up. I adore your trails collection and think your video was very true to the core for the rest of us collectors. Keep moving forward, relentlessly.
Got this video recommended on my feed and love your presentation style. Very calm and easy to follow, I can’t handle some RUclipsrs that make millions of jump cuts and are bouncing off the wall. Subscribed :)
Same... I've never seen her videos before, but I'm definitely a new subscriber. This was a great video and one that I could relate to in so many ways as a collector (especially of collector's editions) who has way more games than I can possibly ever play and so much double+ dipping.
@Saul G Damn. Well...lucky dude then 😁 She's cute. I don't creep chicks on RUclips though but just state the obvious lol. I like her style though she is very easy to listen too. Nice voice as well and yeah good looking. Kind of chick that looks good without any makeup nor needs 50 layers of it like many others apparently do.
@@orbalology I got the PAL versions of Mong and the hunt for the Cat and Dog meal China City. Interessted? It is a communist game suited for Americas and Europe and how everyone is getting rich.
It takes usually a long time until a channel becomes big. But compared to Scott the Woz, who sounds like he is drunken and in private is obviously very different than in his videos, I like to watch your videos much more.
Got a random recommendation for this video in my feed, having not heard of the channel. Have subscribed immediately, I really appreciate how articulate, thoughtful and well spoken your video is. Keep up the good work.
10:05 Heads up, the day one PS4 discs also only have the first game on the disc. It was reprinted later with all three, but they're tricky to come across. The newer discs say 2019 on the smallprint instead of 2018 (on the actual disc, not the box).
Great video! I feel like everyone has some regrets. I am a little upset that I purchased Majora's Mask and OOT 3D in the Nintendo selects version, not knowing at the time there was a difference. Especially since the standard versions were around the same price. I only have the spines showing on my shelf so it's not a big deal but YOU KNOW it's the little things lol
Those little things can really stand out on the shelf! And even if it's not noticeably visible (like the UAE 3DS games), it can still creep up in the back of a collector's mind 😅
happens to the best of us :) cheers orb great vid as always.... AHHHH Bravely Default.. the mechanics of this games are so incredible and pretty much unmatchable by anything done today, truly a modern classic turn base jrpg with a story so f'in crazy that to this day I can't believe it was done
Can relate to everything you mentioned. Not the end of the world but definitely a lingering thought when thinking of the games not being the right version or getting multiple copies. I tend to stick with original ports but can see the convenience of having it ported on newer consoles
Great list Emily! I share some of the same regrets as you. Being patient is the biggest thing for me. I also have a rule that I don’t double dip, so I usually sell one copy to help fund the other one. But it’s so tempting to keep everything.😂😂
The Orbalology background journey has come full circle! Love the new background! It’s So cute and unique to you I think FOMO gets the best of Us all 😅 Especially for us physical collectors since we have to think about a lot of different variables besides waiting for a sell For me tho I tend to buy games day one because of the hype then realize wow this was a waste of money lol like the Mario sports games or nostalgia bait games
Thanks Mandy! 😆 FOMO really does get to us all 😅 I've been trying to avoid the limited print publishers & not preordering games from outside of my favorite franchises but it can be a difficult exercise of will 😅
first off can i just say that from the first second of the video im already in love. legend of heroes and Fire Emblem are my literal top 2 game series of all time and i love them so much. to see those collections and i have most of those as well (not all sadly) it makes me happy seeing someone else appreciate them as much as i do
Thank you for talking about this! I would say for me I've had to learn that I do care about my games being complete. I use to buy a lot of cart only DS, 3DS and switch games but later would find myself overpaying for original cases on ebay. I've finally come to realize that the discount in the long run just isn't worth it for me.
Some great collector tips there. I’m the opposite with double (or triple) dipping as I collect for all systems but it does add up if buying at launch. Being in Aus though we can’t rely on reprints so once something sells out we (usually) either have to buy EU PAL or enter the second had market so FOMO is definitely something right now given 3ds and WiiU store closures as some of the prices due to no reprints are already ridiculous 😢 Happy collecting
Nobody should have to regret buying anything if they try the games first before buying them GameStop gives you 7 days to try the game you don’t like it return it simple as that
@@orbalology then go to your video store that was the way I used to rent games back in the 80’s pay $7.00 but paying full price for games makes no sense you can also subscribe to game pass plus extra on Xbox and PlayStation which I have the reason I didn’t say Nintendo online is cause they don’t give Nintendo Switch games I don’t trust every game that gets released if every game was great that comes out I would have every game then
Hi Emily! Those nendroids on your shelves are super cute! I watched a video on how they're made. Well worth it at MSRP, but not so much when they're scalped. Predicting when something will come in stock, when they'll go on sale, whether they'll get reprint, or if a regional version will ever happen give me too much anxiety. 😅 I tend to pre-order or buy from import shop if I really want something, get it, put it on my shelf and forget about it. That way I won't feel any regrets of not buying it or miss out on it all together. There aren't many things that catch my eyes though, so I'm not breaking the bank.
The nendoroids were a great find! I thankfully didn't have to pay a lot for them, I think they may have been slightly under MSRP but it's hard to know because two of them were Japanese game preorder inclusions. And that sounds like a good way to go about collecting! I wish I wasn't so focused on some of the details for these things at times 😅
hell yeah a channel dedicated to my favorite hobby :) and i can relate to a lot of these lol. one big regret of mine is i used to trade away older ps2 era titled to get like some of the hd collections and also trade away individual games to get like all in one releases, and looking back i really liked just having each game with their covers n manuals by themselves
It's nice owing the originals for some games, especially if they're top favorites! Also with more underperforming remasters and ports coming out on modern consoles (most recently Tales of Symphonia) sometimes it makes sense to hold onto those original games.
Glad to have found your page. I appreciate your videos! I just started collecting for the GBA because I like mods and the idea of home brews. I'm thinking about getting into the 3DS. Your video on getting started in 2023 was invaluable. Thanks!
I feel you! I've definitely done the mistake of buying a few retro games through Amazon and will never do that again. It's always better to be patient, especially if you already have a huge backlog. Thanks for the content. Keep it up! XD
Just found your channel from yt recs, nice to see someone else that doesn't like misleading stock photos, have quite a few pal games that I wanted ESRB versions for.
Good tips - my biggest regret is buying stuff just for pickups videos about 10 years ago. I just buy games now that I actually will play and I put a stop to that!
Feeling pressured to make pickup videos is something I've been trying not to take part in myself. Though I guess my collecting bug makes it so that there are so many games I want to obtain & genuinely play but the timing is unrealistic at this point lol.
Nice video… I recently took the opportunity to sell my carts of games that required downloads, used the GameStop promos to boost the trades at 30% when preordering Zelda, got a couple hundred and bought digital copies on eshop, it happened to be a lot of Nintendo 1st parties that had expansion passes except Xenoblade & Fire Emblem, and collections from Ubisoft, Activision. I’m focused on complete editions, or rarer games that have patches on the, like you mentioned. Helps with my micro sd card space.
This was a great topic to touch on! As a physical collector myself, I have mostly all the same regrets you do. I've been falling especially hard for the steelbook FOMO as of late. Another thing that I need to re-evaluate it's worth going forward, is regional exclusive items in collector's editions such as art books and acrylics. I find myself double-dipping sometimes for NA collector's editions and EU/JPN collector's just to get all the items I wish was included in the NA versions.
I've been tempted to pick up some of the other region CEs as well (mostly for the Trails games 😅). I've been trying to resist for space reasons, but some of the other regions really get some awesome inclusions in their special editions.
I found this video very fascinating. As a long term collector myself. I've recently decided that based on the fact that. I doubt there are games in my collection I will play a decade from now, I'll only purchase games That have a unique packaging & inserts or ones that I feel have will be my favorite games. Everything else I will buy digitally?. I have several games from the PS2 and PS3 generation that I will probably never play. I don't want that to happen with this current generation even though I enjoy having them on display
I like the new setup with the shelf and your statues displayed in the background. The quality of your videos keep getting better. I agree with all these points you make, PATIENCE is key in collecting, especially in game collecting. I have learned from my mistakes of buying a game day one and not playing them, only to see price drops later. I've cut back on my purchases and am not as quick to buy things. I try to think long term when making a purchase. I can't wait to see your thoughts on Nier Automata when you play it. I love the game and still remember not being able to put it down till I completed everything. The music is top notch! Thanks again for another great video!
Thanks! I'm really liking how the new setup is coming along as well. And I'm really looking forward to Nier Automata - hoping to fit it in sometime this year but with all the new releases I'm looking forward to playing on Day 1 it may be a little difficult 😅
Great topic for a video, a lot of lessons I've learned throughout my life of collecting and it's nice to see I'm not the only person that thinks of these things.
First off, awesome collection for Trails in the background. Auto sub since I'm new to the channel. Good subject as I recently got back into collecting physical games again with the PS4 & Switch. The biggest lesson I would like to share is do it for the fun. I enjoy all my games or will enjoy if I don't play day one. Don't do it for the money or the rare ones.....do it because they are great games. For a fellow RPGer, do it because they are great stories!
Such a great video, thank you for a refreshing perspective. I've made many of the same mistakes myself (I've 3 copies of Ryza 1 and 2 in various formats) So good to see that I'm not alone when RUclips skews things the other way
It really helped to know your rationale and it was very relatable, especially in regard to the biggest lesson of waiting if you’re not going to play it on day 1
I absolutely feel you on the 3DS cases with the extra logos printed on them. They certainly look odd and stand out from within your collection, so I've made the best effort to avoid those. But for someone who just wants to play the games, that is a genuinely good way to get your hands on them. For certain games, the price difference can be nearly double just because of that World Edition print. So far I've only gotten the ones with the French logo, but that was by accident. I only saw that it was being sold for way under market price, and bought Majora's Mask and Alpha Sapphire for $20, essentially got one of the games for free, lol. Also, I love your collection on the back! The Fire Emblems in particular. :)
The Switch version of Nier Automata is worth owning imo because it actually has the DLC on the cartridge and important bug fixes the PS4 1.0 version doesn't. Square-Enix cheaped out with the Game of the YorHa edition on PS4. It’s the 1.0 version of the game with a DLC voucher. The same exact thing they did with the Royal Edition of Final Fantasy XV. Even though Nier Automata only runs at 30 FPS on Switch I would definitely pick it if I could only have one copy. It’s a fantastic port! I hope you get to playing Nier Automata someday. It’s one of my absolute favorites
I'm looking forward to it! I guess for a little more context, I bought nier automata on the PS4 when it was super cheap a couple weeks before the switch version came out, thinking it couldn't be that much better of a version. But then I copped for a switch copy after the great performance reviews & snagging it on sale 😅
Extremely relatable video, had to comment for that absolutely amazing Legend of Heroes shelf. My biggest regrets always come from impulse buying games for literally no reason. i.e. games I have no real interest in but something screams to me internally in a specific moment to grab it. Back in the day I'd get the feeling super strong when I would spot an anime game in a big box retailer (which isn't super unusual nowadays). There were a couple times this worked in my favor, I got into Shin Megami Tensei because I spotted Devil Survivor 2 at a Fred Meyer and got that urge to scoop it up. But most of the time I'd end up paying full price for weird games like "Conception II" that I haven't even touched after all these years.
This video was so relatable! Especially the world edition struggle with buying 3DS games on Amazon in particular. I was less knowledgeable about region differences back in 2016-17, so I didn't question when I got Fire Emblem Fates Awakening world edition. I still have it in my collection, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't consider buying just the case and NA region cover to replace it. Also, new setup is looking good! Nice to see so much Trails and FE goodness.
I used to import ALL the time because my country didn’t get a lot of games that other countries got; also, North American versions used to literally run better than the PAL versions. Often, import prices were ridiculously expensive, especially when I was a kid. So, as someone who grew up with a lot of the unreasonably high physical copy prices, I’m all about digital. Also, I generally wait on purchases unless they’re first party, most Switch games have tremendous discounts of 60%+ within a year. So, I’m more about waiting until I want to play a game and then taking the next discount-usually, I find the wait is rarely more than 2 months. On Switch, my biggest regret is Civilization 6 with all the DLC… the game was great at first, but both times I played it my game ran into 100% repeatable crash deep into the game, and that’s after suffering through TONS of slowdown between turns as the game progressed. It’s more about the time than the money I sank into the game.
Ryza 1, yep also imported that one from the UK when I saw the NA prices go through the roof before the reprints. I've been very surprised that NA seems to be the odd one out on a ton of physical release in terms of availability. For both the PS4 and Switch I find myself importing games since EU copies were drastically cheaper on the used market. A good chunk of my PS4 and Switch collections are EU/HK/JP games and that has saved me a ton of money. I'm also guilty of double dipping, but mainly older games that get HD remasters later on. When choosing between PS4 or Switch versions of modern games, I tend to go for the Switch version for portability, unless it has bad performance or part of the game is only a download code on the platform. By the way, love what your doing with your figure and art book display, might have to do something similar with my game room =)
Yeah it seems strange how quickly NA versions go out of stock compared to other regions. Though it's been nice see so many reprints come back on the market recently. And thank you! I'm really happy with how the display is turning out so far :)
I have shared almost ALL of the buying concerns you have. And it's funny that Disgaea 4 is the exact one I got a PAL version for cause I was worried about FOMO. Great video. Good to know someone else shares in buyer's regret.
To be honest when it comes to limited editions that include "foreign" copies of their respective games i usually check if it's cheaper to buy the game for the preferred region separately alongside the limited edition or just skip on the limited edition in general since the price is too high. That's what I did with fire emblem echos and bravely second for the 3DS where I got the PAL limited editions and later on got the NSTC versions of the games. Also yeah.. atelier Ryza got reprints today in preparation for the third installment which is nice. Btw I do unboxing videos for limited editions, it's a crippling hobby. PS- you make very valid points that most collectors go through
Despite not being a native English speaker, I have discovered and fallen in love with The Legend of Heroes series. I have all of the games on Steam, but I feel like I need to own them in physical format for PS4, Greetings from Ecuador!
Great video, your new shelving looks great! Most of my collecting regrets have to do with a lack of patience. I’m actually pretty good about not buying the newest games I want if I know I can’t play them immediately, but when there’s a retro/out of print game that I want for the collection that I find in-person I have a hard time not buying immediately even if it’s not the best deal because I get that awful feeling of not knowing the next time I’ll have the opportunity to get a copy that I can inspect before buying.
Thanks! And I totally understand about finding an obscure game out in the wild and wanting to scoop it up immediately. Being able to inspect it right there is a great advantage for sure.
I actually recently ordered a copy of Fire Emblem Birthright. It was advertised as an original copy, both in the image and the description. I paid $10 extra specifically for that reason. It arrived, UAE version. Real pain.
The double dipping is my regret sometimes as well. Good thing its curing the collection always an option that us collectors do at some point and it could be fun 😊 Happy collecting journey!!! Love your trails series shelf
thanks for posting. I've been bit by a few of these (double dipping/download codes), but waiting for sales has saved me the most over the years. Hopefully they put out more games like retro's recent remaster of prime. the price made it easy to be impatient. O.O!
Another thing to keep in mind is Asian Pacific region games. Many will have all the games on a single cart such as Final Fantasy X X2 or uncensored version if playing a game in the manner the devs planned it to be matters to you for preservation purposes
This video is spot on. As a very niche collector of certain retro games mainly from Nintendo I have so many regrets. So glad I waited for metroid physical 🙌
Attention, first release of Spyro trilogy only had first game on the discs (for PS4 or XBOX). And then silently 2 years later, they have updated the disc. Problem is, that artwork was not updated at all. And that includes disc design. The only way how to recognize them, is to search for the miniscule copyright year on the disc that is different and then the reprinted copies had a different leaflet add inside (I think it was for Crash racing game). Also some versions of the games were only released in some regions (Bloodborne with DLC was only released in Europe; Zelda breath of the wild with DLC included only in Japan). And last not least there is the Nintendo only issue, where if you have a game from a different region and you want to buy something for it (like DLC or in game currency) you will have to go to the shop of that region. This is not the problem for Xbox or PS as they have no problem to accept pall disc but will still let you use your local online shop.
For some reason, I thought it'd be a great idea to get a complete collection of physical PS4 games... didn't realize there were SO MANY at the time, but I often order them online from GameStop. I generally sort by price low to high and grab whatever I don't already have if it's cheap. The thing that drives me nuts, though, is that, since I'm ordering online, I have no idea if the game has the original case/artwork or not. I've wound up with several games without the official case/artwork due to this. I wish GameStop could show whether used games have the box art before I order.
I'm excited for Dragon Quest 12 The Flames Of Fate, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, Naruto X Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections, the Resident Evil 4 remake, and the new Budokai Tenkaichi game! Have a great night, and stay safe!
I love your new setup though that's probably cause it's mostly figures and art books from my 2 favorite series, fire emblem and trails 😄the Tio Estelle Renne and Elie lineup is amazing. Not directly related to collecting but implicit with how many games you talked about is the regret all of us have which is our video game backlog.Your video has numerous games i still want to play but have not gotten around to yet.
Thanks! I'm really happy with how the setup is shaping up as well. And yup the backlog can certainly be a heavy weight, but it's also something you will always have to look forward to :)
Immortal Phoenix Rising is really good! I recommend playing the PS5 version but I absolutely loved that game. At first, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it but it exceeded my expectations by a mile. FOMO is a terrible feeling. In the board gaming hobby, since the games are all physical, the prices will skyrocket if a 2nd print is not initiated. At least with video games, digital copies exist if you really want to play it. Great video, once again!
Great video and thank you for the advice! I almost fell into fomo when i wanted to buy the Deluxe Edition of NIS Prinny Presents Vol. 2 and Vol.3 when they first released. At the time i didnt want to pay the full price and figured they would drop the price in the future so i held off. Just yesterday i was able to pick them both at gamestop cause they dropped the price on both brand new. Very glad i waited and got them for a comfortable price.
Great video Emily, I liked how you went in depth on some tips. Honestly there are games I wanna double dip on. My honest regret is not waiting for a physical of games I wanna buy.
Getting rid of dupes was a great way to save space. I would typically just keep the definitive version of the game. I don't need 360 versions of bioshock when I have Remastered collection for instance.
Not sure if you're aware but you can delete the ps4 version of a upgrade disc after downloading the PS5 version and it acts as a ps5 disc at that point. Found this out with a roomate's copy of MLB The Show that only had a ps4 physical but free ps5 upgrade. I also ran into lesson 1 not that long ago when I bought the Asia English version of Little Witch Nobetta only to see the announcement a couple of days later that it was going to get a pretty swanky physical through Idea Factory.
I missed out on the pre order at limited run of Strife: Veteran Edition and i panicked bought on eBay from a reseller for 70$. It was restocked since it wasn't a numbered release and it's still available for 35$ 😅 lesson learned
I regret not buying Mario 3D World, Skyward Sword and Metroid Dread for about €90 last year. Last month I bought the first two for €45 and €35 respectively. Still decent prices, but wish I didn't pass on such a good deal. The biggest regret I have though is buying games when I don't have the time to play them. In a way I became an accidental collector lol.
Unfortunately with complete versions of games all 3 do this now with games especially third party multiplatform games I've noticed. Sometimes its better to wait to a games done with dlc all together. Same for digital the physical are slowly being pushed out. In certain cases like square end with phantasy star online them and Sony stopped making copies of their remaster for it but not the switch. And I don't think Xbox is even getting one at all. On the physical game issue while I do think all 3 should make more physical copies Nintendo included, I don't think it would make that big of a difference because of of one thing *scalpers* . They're the real culprit because retailers online or offline in person need to have better systems in place ie countering buyers, limiting units per customer in stores etc. I worked in target electronics for years and general retail experience Generally speaking for over a decade plus for a few companies Target, GS, FYR etc. Stores now are limiting people which is good because Nintendo always been a big attraction for scalpers back to the wii days and down get me started on the nes and snes classics lol. They made more for snes stock and I got 2 on day one of release. I got lucky I worked at target at the time so I took that day off waited in line when they opened which was 8 in thr morning and we got a ticket I was 67 of 72. I got the employee discount and a mini snes but the gamestoo across the lot I was first in line before I ran to target. My plan was the opposite but the GS opened an hour after target so I timed it perfectly. Got the target one snd ran to GS I got 2. I'm sure scalpers did this. GS had 15 the first day I was the 4th ticket. It was similar with the switch and ps4 but especially the switch...our special editions we got in were gone within an hour of the date 😂. Now the ps classic not so much that thing collected dust snd had 3 price drops. Crazy it was the polar opposite of the snes mini which were gone in the same day. TheBoth Target and GS limited one per customer. Seems it varied by the store best buy the next plaza over had like 100 people in line outside the store 😂 Not that Xbox and PS games, consoles aren't popular but from my experience Nintendo games and consoles seems the highest in demand on release. Its crazy. Thankfully I got lucky with the snes classic unlike the first nes. The switch I waited a month I didn't want to deal with that on launch lol 😅 cool vid you seem nice and are cute. Have a nice week!
For PS4 games with PS5 upgrades, you don’t need to install the PS4 version to your PS5 if that’s what you mean. You can pause if it starts installing and also delete the PS4 version if it is already installed. Of course, having only the PS4 version on the disc isn’t good for long term preservation of the better version.
True, but I guess we will find ways to extract the "upgrade versions" anyway. Honestly, I wouldn't be even surprised if we use digital game extractions as preservation, because discs don't really provide the full game anymore.
Absolutely looooove the background setup Emily! Everything looks so well organized and pleasing on the eyes. Lots of great lessons to be learned here that a lot of us collectors are guilty of. I tend to play the waiting game with new releases as I know they are going to drop in price pretty fast. Most of my PS5 games I picked up for a fraction of their MSRP and I'm glad I waited. I'm also guilty of double dipping on Persona 5 Royal, ended up getting it digitally on PS4 when it was on sale but didn't play past Kamoshida castle because I wanted to wait for the Switch version. The code in a box BS is a red flag, stayed far away from those and ended up doing the same when only half of the game is on the cart like for example LA Noire.
For the PS4 and PS5, there seems to be a pattern of the spring and summer releases ending up as Black Friday deals. That happens for Switch games to a lesser extent. I often don't buy day one anymore unless it is a collectors edition that I really want.
Thanks Cesar! Yeah I've been trying to exercise patience with most new releases nowadays, and hope that if I don't catch them in time there'll be those handy restocks 😅 And the code in the box is really awful and I'm still a bit salty I fell for them early in my Switch collecting days 😅
@@orbalology I've noticed there are more code in a box releases in PAL territories so I'm guessing publishers are starting to smarten up when it comes to physical Switch releases, at least in the states so that's good news I hope!
I bought the P5 strikers port after finishing the switch port of Royal and the resolution difference was just too high for me. I wanted to buy it in spite of the Musou gameplay because i liked P5R a lot, but between the gameplay and the performance i just didn't like it that much
I’m glad I’m not the only one with a large collection that has regrets. My regret is buying all my switch games digitally! It’s very convenient, but the SD cards to my knowledge can only hold one terabyte at a time so now I am disappointed I went this route , because I can’t have all my games on the go like I thought I would 😅
I wouldn't really consider myself much of a collector, but I personally enjoy picking up physical copies of games when I can. Because of this, I kind of regret grabbing certain games digitally even though I got them at good prices. Also, I had my own little regret moment today at a pawn shop. I came across a game I paid $65 for priced $40. Not a massive regret but definitely a "feels bad man" moment. Side note: The new background setup is looking great Emily!
Thanks! I'm pretty pleased with how the shelves are coming together. And I feel you about the small price differences & buying games cheap digitally. I haven't purchased too many digital games yet but I did end up buying FF VII-IX and sort of wish I held out so I could pick up those Asian-English physicals guilt-free. I still haven't made the plunge to get those yet but maybe I'll give in someday 😅
As someone who lives in an apartment, I don't have much space to accommodate physical games, especially the limited editions with bonuses. I have to resort to digital purchases more than half the time. If there's a game that comes out on PC, PS5, Switch or Xbox, I would resort to buying the PC version first because of performance and visual. This helps sort out my collection in case I do want to buy certain physical copies.
Space can be a big issue for collectors, so I don't blame you for going digital for many of your games. I just moved into a studio apt myself and finding space is an issue, but hoping my new setup will help with displaying things without looking too cramped 😅
For me, I found collecting I got buying games I left sealed for upwards of 10 years, so when I moved out of home, I only brought games I hadn't finished and gave myself limited shelf space. In some instances this has meant I haven't had the luxury to buy games I'm looking at and while I might miss out on games I want to play later, if I'm still holding onto games I bought 10 years ago and still haven't played, I can afford to wait to buy them. I would say I may have overspent on a few PS3 games but otherwise there's not too many regrets from a collecting standpoint. I did feel like I overpaid for a couple of Nintendo DS/3DS games, but they turned out to be smart buys.
I am not sure about Spyro in the US, but here in Germany the first print of the PS4 game also had only the first game on the disc, but there is a reprint (I think it has a 2019 on its back) with all 3 games on the disc. Better make sure to get the right version of it.
Just discovered your channel! Love the chill vibes and I can absolutely commiserate on the regrets, haha. My gameroom is in Canada and I totally love getting stuff from VideoGamesPlus! Cheers!
The one thing that I've looked for with the Switch are games that are wholly unique experiences on the Switch, even if they have the "download part of the game" tag on the box. Games that stick in mind are The Outer Worlds and Assassin's Creed III. Yes, you have to download, but the experience of taking those games mobile are great and have been improved with patches.
A very enjoyable vid to watch and very informative. My regret was not buying Valkyrie Profile on PS1 10+ years ago when it was $90. I did get it recently but shelled out $300. Knowing when to pull the trigger on a purchase was something that took me a long time to learn, and I still haven't mastered it lol
Oof yeah those premium retro games can be a difficult one to swallow. It's really difficult to know when to strike with how unpredictable the market can be at times!
@@orbalology Absolutely. So much stuff to combat in the retro game market like WATA's market manipulation, resellers charging high prices and the uneducated consumers they prey on buying them, it's ridiculous
Hi :) I feel like games are like moods. Granted we have to be smart with spending. But I feel like if you buy a game that you are hyped about at $60 and you play it and enjoy it and beat it. Then you get your moneys worth. If you wait till it’s on sale at $20. And you don’t feel the hype or interest anymore and it just gathers dust on the shelf. Then that’s not so good.
I can relate to the double dipping mistake on Persona 5, I have three copies and still haven't played the game🤦♂ Insightfully video look forward to seeing the next one 🙂👍
I regret buying too many video games in a way. Until some years ago I only bought the games which I wanted to play immediately, and I played them immediately. But now I buy too many games in advance, before I ever have the time playing them. Games which I really like I can play for dozens if not hundreds of hours, sometimes by replaying them after a while. There is not really time for so many games which I now own.
Very relatable video. The French region thing is a sticking point for me as well. It's rare I double dip outside of games I really like. P5R I double dipped with when the Switch version came out, but I loved that game on PS4. I also have a little goal on Switch to have one physical NA game for every Smash character possible. The Crisis Core release, for instance, gave me Cloud and Sephiroth. Crisis Core is an interesting performance case because, from my experience with the psp version back in the day, is fundamentally a portable game in design. So playing through the Switch version, more resolution and all, didn't bother me since I almost exclusively played it portable.
Huh. I didn't realise they did this. I got the Crash Trilogy with the bonus levels but Spyro on launch.
This is why I hate activison they are so cheap and greedy.
She’s good
I have more sell regrets than buy regrets lol. I still think of games i sold that make me sick.
Hey you’re in some of the same Facebook groups as me lol 😂 I recognize your face
@@paralysis_demon_hunter ayyy what’s up haha
Me too a few years ago I sold my super Nintendo and n64 collection!!! 😢
That’s why I’m never going to sell any of my physical games again.
As someone who is very into media and product preservation and collecting, i love this channel! We need more of this kind of content, education on region locks and incomplete physical media and stuff like that. Looks like this might be the video that blows up too! 🥳
Thanks, I really appreciate this :)
I agree. I don’t go through all the trouble of buying a physical copy just to be forced to download gigabytes of data. I almost returned my copy of the Spyro Trilogy.
I LOVE how the trails stuff is front and center in the background, beautiful collection!
Thank you! I can't wait to add more items to the shelf (that are either pre-ordered or currently on the way 😆)
so jealous! the fire emblem row is nice too
I feel you on lesson number 8. When I got Final Fantasy X I didn’t know that X-2 was a download code nor did I know that the Asian version had both games on cart. I’ll probably end up double dipping on that one just to have X-2 on cart.
I'm really tempted to hunt down the Asian version for that game too 🙈
This was one of my successful wait to buys.
I know what you mean. I missed out on buying the Fire Emblem Fates special edition, and I've resigned myself to never buying it at this point.
i love your fire emblem collection, especially the byleth figure! looks epic
At the 8:39 mark, you basically described my game buying process, and I had quite the good laugh 😅. Hope you have a great weekend!!
lol 😂 There are some games I can see myself continuing to double dip on (i.e. Trails 😅) but I'm hoping not to extend this to too many other franchises in the future 😅
And thanks!
The sign alignment difference is probably my biggest pet peeve regarding the PAL Switch games 😅
The new background is great! I love the small details you put into it
I love using apps to watch for price drops! I also check things on my want list semi frequently. Managed to get Ghost of Tsushima for 19.96 from full price!! It is possible to get deals but it definitely takes a lot of patience as you said and FOMO definitely gets me more often than not🤭. If you have more double dipped games it might be fun to see an entire video about that
Thanks! I'm pleased with how the shelves are shaping up too :)
Those deal apps and following social media deal accounts can be great!
@@saulg195 what does that have to do with anything? I’m gay but even if she was a man I don’t exclusively watch single people… Grow up.
Thanks, I appreciate it :)
Your content is pretty solid and your production value is getting even better. Congrats and keep it up!
Thanks! I appreciate it.
I agree videos are getting better production wise.
@@orbalology I got the PAL versions of Mong and the hunt for the Cat and Dog meal China City. Interessted? It is a communist game suited for Americas and Europe and how everyone is getting rich.
You are very knowledgeable about the little nitpicks of game collecting. I enjoy watching your content!. You definitely deserve more recognition.
Thank you, I appreciate it 😁
It takes usually a long time until a channel becomes big.
Thanks, I appreciate it! :)
Instantly subscribed, fantastic video, RUclips actually recommending great channels for once😆
10:05 Heads up, the day one PS4 discs also only have the first game on the disc. It was reprinted later with all three, but they're tricky to come across. The newer discs say 2019 on the smallprint instead of 2018 (on the actual disc, not the box).
Thanks for the heads up! I hadn't realized there was a difference in print runs for the PS4 game.
It can be so tempting, especially when different versions offer different experiences or content 😅
@@orbalology ugh.. yes! Hahaha
Great video! I feel a lot of collectors, feel this way, after reflecting.
The Orbalology background journey has come full circle! Love the new background! It’s So cute and unique to you
I think FOMO gets the best of Us all 😅
Especially for us physical collectors since we have to think about a lot of different variables besides waiting for a sell
For me tho I tend to buy games day one because of the hype then realize wow this was a waste of money lol like the Mario sports games or nostalgia bait games
Thanks Mandy! 😆
FOMO really does get to us all 😅 I've been trying to avoid the limited print publishers & not preordering games from outside of my favorite franchises but it can be a difficult exercise of will 😅
first off can i just say that from the first second of the video im already in love. legend of heroes and Fire Emblem are my literal top 2 game series of all time and i love them so much. to see those collections and i have most of those as well (not all sadly) it makes me happy seeing someone else appreciate them as much as i do
That shelf is lookin good! Would love to see a room tour once it’s all set up. 😊
Thanks, and that's the plan! Hopefully within the next month it'll be ready :)
I love your new shelves Emily, they're awesome like you are! 🙂
Thanks! I'm really happy with how they're turning out :)
Some great collector tips there. I’m the opposite with double (or triple) dipping as I collect for all systems but it does add up if buying at launch.
Being in Aus though we can’t rely on reprints so once something sells out we (usually) either have to buy EU PAL or enter the second had market so FOMO is definitely something right now given 3ds and WiiU store closures as some of the prices due to no reprints are already ridiculous 😢
Happy collecting
Nobody should have to regret buying anything if they try the games first before buying them GameStop gives you 7 days to try the game you don’t like it return it simple as that
Unfortunately not everyone has a GameStop in their area and you can't easily return things online with their not so great customer service :/
@@orbalology then go to your video store that was the way I used to rent games back in the 80’s pay $7.00 but paying full price for games makes no sense you can also subscribe to game pass plus extra on Xbox and PlayStation which I have the reason I didn’t say Nintendo online is cause they don’t give Nintendo Switch games I don’t trust every game that gets released if every game was great that comes out I would have every game then
@@orbalology I agree they don’t have costumer service I just use them for rent and buying collectors edition but there is nothing we can do about it
Thanks!
Thank you! Glad to hear you found my 3DS video helpful too :)
I feel you! I've definitely done the mistake of buying a few retro games through Amazon and will never do that again. It's always better to be patient, especially if you already have a huge backlog. Thanks for the content. Keep it up! XD
Oof yeah it can be difficult to buy retro games without detailed photos on places like Amazon! And thank you :)
Mercari is actually cheaper than Amazon and eBay
Just found your channel from yt recs, nice to see someone else that doesn't like misleading stock photos, have quite a few pal games that I wanted ESRB versions for.
Good tips - my biggest regret is buying stuff just for pickups videos about 10 years ago. I just buy games now that I actually will play and I put a stop to that!
Feeling pressured to make pickup videos is something I've been trying not to take part in myself. Though I guess my collecting bug makes it so that there are so many games I want to obtain & genuinely play but the timing is unrealistic at this point lol.
Thanks for including PS5 and PS4 games. Great video. We all have our fails.
Thanks! And yup, we all have our fails but they can present good learning opportunities at least.
I really appreciate your honesty in this. I picked up a few tips. Thanks!
Glad to hear this was helpful :)
No that spyro remake was fire! I saw it in the thumbnail and held back my tears
Such a great video, thank you for a refreshing perspective.
I've made many of the same mistakes myself (I've 3 copies of Ryza 1 and 2 in various formats) So good to see that I'm not alone when RUclips skews things the other way
I like the long arc this girl sticking a clarinet in her pz.
Good content. Keep it up!
It really helped to know your rationale and it was very relatable, especially in regard to the biggest lesson of waiting if you’re not going to play it on day 1
Thanks! :)
Thanks! I'm pleased with how the setup is coming along :)
When choosing between PS4 or Switch versions of modern games,
I tend to go for the Switch version for portability, unless it has bad performance or part of the game is only a download code on the platform.
Thanks, I'm glad to hear this topic has been resonating with many others and that we're not alone with feeling buyer's remorse too 😅
To be honest when it comes to limited editions that include "foreign" copies of their respective games i usually check if it's cheaper to buy the game for the preferred region separately alongside the limited edition or just skip on the limited edition in general since the price is too high.
PS- you make very valid points that most collectors go through
Alright! We need to see the shelf 🤩
Great summary of thought and editing. Your channel deserves to grow.
Thank you! Appreciate it :)
I bought the digital version of Crystar because the physical copy was over $100 which was insane.
Thankyou so much I will defo take all 11 tips when buying games I have made some stupendous mistakes
Despite not being a native English speaker, I have discovered and fallen in love with The Legend of Heroes series. I have all of the games on Steam, but I feel like I need to own them in physical format for PS4, Greetings from Ecuador!
The Trails series is awesome and well worth owning physically if possible! Hope you can find a great deal on them if you decide to collect 😄
Real pain.
Oof, I've definitely been there. Same thing happened with my Bravely Default game 😞
The double dipping is my regret sometimes as well. Good thing its curing the collection always an option that us collectors do at some point and it could be fun 😊
Happy collecting journey!!!
Love your trails series shelf
Thanks! And happy collecting journey to you as well :)
Love this topic, I definitely have a few regrets myself but it makes me feel better to know I'm not alone!
I'm glad to see many others are in the same boat too lol
thanks for posting.
All your Legend of Heroes figures are awesome! I'm very jealous 😅
Thanks! I can't wait for the other kotobukiya figures to arrive so I can have a whole army of them on that shelf 😂
This video is spot on. As a very niche collector of certain retro games mainly from Nintendo I have so many regrets. So glad I waited for metroid physical 🙌
Thanks! 😄
Thanks! Yeah it can be tempting to go for digital releases right away, especially when it's so accessible.
As a collector myself double dipping is my bane..lol also buying games with download codes..love your vids and your calming voice.
Oh no! I've been there too, I feel like it's a right of passage for many of us collectors lol
Passing on good deals can be difficult! Though sometime the timing just doesn't work out. And I feel you regarding the perpetual backlog 😅
@@DrGamingPlays Agreed! I notice it happens often for First Party Sony, Ubisoft, EA and Sega titles especially.
I’m never gonna call myself a game collector, again. You shame me, girl…
… subscribed.
Having that extra content is nice! And having the ability to play them handheld is great too :)
I can relate to the double dipping mistake on Persona 5, I have three copies and still haven't played the game🤦♂
Insightfully video look forward to seeing the next one 🙂👍
Thank you! :)
Your video background had a glow up!!
Thanks! 😆
Oh that's an interesting collecting goal! And pretty awesome way to add a lot of variety into the collection :)
