for me 4 is still the better game the music was incredible, the story felt more fleshed out, and the sprite work I’d argue is the best on the PSX but imo both games are still 10/10 so it’s not like you can go wrong with either
3 was better, if only for the fact I had a bug in 4 that kept me from playing the game past a certain point. I tried so hard back then, but at some point I gave up.
Breath of Fire 3 and 4 both excel in different areas. BoF3 is one of the greatest adventures where afterwards you truly feel like you went on a long journey with friends. BoF4 is a much better story but feels a little less personal and more on rails. I miss oldschool RPGs and especially this series.
Number 3 is important because it concludes the legacy that began in the first game, Number 4 happens in a alternative timeline and universe where Ryu is basically a God who was incorrectly summoned, leading to the happenings of the game, so both games are important.
I wouldn't say BoF4 is a better story. It has it's moments but BoF3 had a bigger awakening on the storytelling. BoF4 was kind of eh okay and I can see good elements in it. BoF 4 had a more Ghibli feeling to it.
I'm a bigger fan of 4. I loved the characters and loved how the map took you on a linear story with minimal back tracking. It played like reading a novel.
BOF4 was an aesthetic masterpiece, I used to just sit and watch my brother play it all the time. The low-contrast visuals and less-chibi-than-usual sprites were just what I wanted to see at the time. With that said, I preferred to play BOF3!
It's a tough choice between 3 and 4. They both have things about them I like a lot. I'd probably give the edge to 3, although I think they both stack up almost equally for different reasons. I really liked 2 a lot as well!
I honestly much prefered 3. While 4 has some decent gameplay improvements and had an interesting story, I found 3s to be a bit better. 3 had more memorable as well. The dragon system in 4 was a huge downgrade too and the biggest failing in my eyes.
I always felt like the game was rushed, the game needed a very last quest where we had to look for Yuna and destroy him/her, the true responsible of all the shit show of summoning the gods for war.
I loved the story and characters of 3 too. 3 has one of my favorite character reveals in a game ever in Act 2, I did not see it coming at all when I first played the game, and it floored younger me.
I love 3 and 4. If I were to say one flaw about 4 is that the battle difficult always felt like it was set a tad too low until the last parts of the game. Like I had to actively avoid battles to keep the difficulty up at a satisfying level in my more recent playthroughs.
BOF IV was my first BOF game. It made me fall in love with the series, but I know the superior game (Bof 3). What I liked about bof4 are Fou Lu….if you know, you know, the characters, the world, truly a gem. What I didn’t like was the map, the transformations, but most of all the CENSORSHIP. It’s really slept on great game, I love BOF 4. CAPCOM PLEASE WE NEED MORE BOF LOVE!!!
As much as I tried to get into BOF 3. i just couldn’t…I always download it play it for a while then delete it. BOF 4 just fits my style, music, story no modernization. I just love how truly shonen anime it feels like. I wish a remake or a remaster will be made soon
3 was the first I played and sucked me into the series. Love the music, characters and I love the fishing. Havent beaten 4 yet, but its been sitting on my shelf taunting me to finish it one of these days.
BoF 2 is a lot like 3, except you can feel that they were still trying to find their direction with this series and it is a bit hit or miss in places. BoF1 I also like a lot since it is very charming and cliché but in a good way like watching 90s anime. Give those others a try, they are easy to find online.
This was the game that me into RPG. I have many good memories of playing this. Just bums me out that Capcom never wants to acknowledge this series anymore.
@@Xygor When you don't see any characters in any of the spin offs, collaboration games, and you barely see any new promos about Capcom with BOF involved. Just sad really.

BOF3 was my first PS1 RPG and the first RPG I ever played. I have a lot of love for that game. Nice graphics, great story and likable characters. I'll definitely play it again and I'll do a lot more grinding for that battle hahaha!

I played bof 4 when I was 12 and got stuck on sarai cuz I didn’t know English and didn’t know what to do 6 years later I found an emulator for it and the music alone pulled me back in and I finished the game loved every minute of it!!
I remember picking this up on actual release day back in the day. I did enjoy it for a while, but ended up dropping it. Back then Squaresoft had the best JRPGs and BOF4 just seemed incredibly generic by comparison to anything Square was putting out at the time, so I ended up replaying Squaresoft games I had already beaten.
Breath of fire 3 for me, even though four is good, I never did like that the dragons were mostly summons, in three you transform, like in part one, plus most dragons on four looked very weird.
After renting 3 different copies of this game and getting one from my friend I only got 2 hours in the game at most, they were all scratched to hell, I still NEED TO FINISH THIS GAME I LOVE IT SO FKN MUCH
I think bof 4 is leagues better than 3, the story is more concise and darker, the characters are handled better, the overall flow of the game is smoother. While the dragon transformations were better in 3 I think 4 does everything else better than 3. Though I understand that the heavy eastern influences and the far jump from the more traditional high fantasy setting of the previous entries can be alienating to a lot of people. I really think 3 is more popular because it better fits people's idea of what they want from a jrpg than 4 did.
Leagues better? The game is a rushed mess and you can tell. People want to say Dragon Quarter killed the series but I say BOF4 killed it and Dragon Quarter was the excrement that was released from the dead corpse that was this IP.
It's a toss up between 3 and 4 for me. Depends on what I feel like for which one wins that day. They both have things I like so I like and recommend them both.
I wish Capcom would release BoF 3&4 on iOS/Android so I could play this right now. I still have my PS1 and disc (and it digitally on PS3 & PS4), but it would be nice to have it in the go and I always have my phone on me
I had no issues with those things about BOF4 that bothered you, so for me it was an improvement over BOF3...I remember playing 3, 4, and 5, and really enjoying them all...
I was talking about old school rpgs with a friend, how innovative they were and how the stood the test of time, goddamn, I could play BOF4 for days and get bored with ff15 in a couple of hours.
I liked bof4 better than bof3 because it had less random battles. Bof3 random battles were so annoying, i don't remember finishing it. I beat bof4. One of the longest final boss battles ever...2 hours straight.
@@MyNameisRevenant Well, what really helped me was get the maximum amount of fairies to mature, and used them in a very long combo on the boss. That cut down their HP significantly.
IV was just "okay" for me. The game & gameplay were great, and the story was interesting. But with the censorship (Scias specifically, but certain aspects of Ursula's personality as well, not to mention one HUGE late-game censorship), the drab visuals & music, the "not even bothering to translate the credits or dub/sub the opening", and all of those God-awful mini-games...no. BoF IV is *NOT* the best in the series.
@@orinanime Scias was an alcoholic, not a stutterer. Fou-Lu decapitated Emperor Soniel. Ursula was rather... _annoyed_ ...that characters had issues understanding her gender. Any scenes deemed "too sexy" was cut entirely.
@@ChaoticHoly wait. You're considering the watercolor like palettes as drab; but watercolor shades tend to be more faded or "washed out" by nature. combine this with the psx compressing the data to a level the hardware can handle and yeah. it'll look rough. :/
To me, 4 felt like a downgrade at the time(we are talking late 90s when it was released), though I played through the game twice because I convinced myself that the Yuna storyline had an ending where I could kill him and I made a mistake somewhere in the playthrough. The biggests demerits for me at the time were 1) the lack of visually different dragon transformations and 2)that the story didnt' feel like it really revolved around Ryu as much, but Nina and Cray(with Fou-lu on the other end). Ryu felt like a third wheel, and I didn't like that too much.
Just beat this game. BoF4 was both a step up and a step down from BoF3 which I prefer. The first thing that stood out to me was the atmosphere. It seems BoF4 has a strong East-Asian influence in its music, and architecture. It gives a very distinctive feel to the game. The Master system was an improvement in that you can learn their skills without being an apprentice to anyone, though you do have to fulfill certain requirements. My only major complaint is that the majority of the masters are not available until the latter half of the game instead of them being unlocked slowly throughout the story. I liked the gameplay where you can swap characters during battle and the magic combo system is a great feature. However, I strongly disliked the fact that each character can only hold three pieces of equipment (weapon, armor, helmet/accessory). This is a huge let-down from the previous titles. I was also unimpressed by the overworld design and the camera system like you said. BoF3 had the right approach as you can traverse an entire world map despite the overall world being somewhat linear. Despite being more expansive, BoF4 takes away the fun of seeing a "bigger picture" in its overworld design. Additionally, there were countless times when I tried to navigate tight corners and climb up/down ladders only to get stuck a few times. However, if I played the game more often, this shouldn't be a huge issue. It seemed like Capcom wanted to cater this game to both new and experienced gamers. Novice RPG players would appreciate the simpler customization, overworld design and gameplay while more experienced players would have a hard time finding some of the best weapons and equipment. Still, BoF4 is a great game, but is somewhat inferior to BoF3.
I probably already said this in other BoF IV videos, but my main problem with the games is the last chapter, it was a miss oportunity, the game could've use its time to futher develop more the main characters, but in exchange you get a ship mini game and a bunch of filler story. I haven't played much of 3, but I have a soft spot for Dragon quarter which saddly is a game that most fans hate
As a fan of Breath of fire since the age of 10, im currently 26 y/o I cannot comprehend the hatred towards number 5, not only was a breath of fresh air for the franchise it also transcended as a game that was ahead of its time, now dungeon crawlers are a thing again. Lastly it exposed an entire community of gamers who claim to like the saga but won't accept changes to improve or sell an initiative. I wonder if capcom will decide to give breath of fire another chance, I dont care if they give them a different gameplay mechanic than turn based, or a different story/reboot. I just wanna see more of that world with the anthropomorphic creatures and monsters.
Given the recent trend of remastering older rpgs, I doubt that Capcom wouldn't do something about the series even if is only the first 4 games, just look at all that megaman rpg collection they will be releasing
@@rudidellama3718 maybe so...I guess I still compare today's capcom to how they were 10 years ago, they sure had improved in some areas as a company. I'm not expecting them to do a remake ala ff7 remake by square, however, a collection will be a good opportunity for capcom to observe if there are enough fans of the franchise out there, increasing the possibility of a remake/reboot even greater.
Neither, Breath of Fire V Dragon quarter was best. Some people think it killed the series, but it had a great story and took new risks. It was just so different from previous that people gave up (some of the systems could get tedious but most was gold, like the farrie village). Next is Breath of Fire 2, then Breath of Fire 1, 3, and 4 are about the same.
V is my favourite as well, but I haven't played IV yet; so I have to see which will be my all time favourite. I got up to the final boss in III; so I can say that I have played it. I have all 5 games; so it is just about finishing III and then playing IV.
Breath of fire 5 or Dragon Quarter was the darkest of the series. It showed what it takes to be the chosen warrior, die for your loved ones, existentialism, racism of social classes, unfulfilled prophecies and more. It was nor 4 nor 5 who killed the saga, it was Capcom poor decision making with the mobile games and number 6.
4 was a lot less relatable for a western audience because it was a bit heavier towards using "Eastern" motifs in terms of music, storytelling, and plot.
Interesting, I always felt like the ambience was different for some reason as a kid, but never bothering me anyways. I think since bof4 happens way apart from the occurrences of 1,2, and 3 is to be expected to find a much different culture.
I played Breath of Fire IV back in the day, and while the story is "good", the characters are very memorable and the battle system is a LOT of fun ... there were also quite a few sour spots I definitely hated at the time (and even today still don't/can't appreciate), even if some of them are bit-part issues like the overly Eastern approach to its "dragon" creature design. I have played bits of Breath of Fire III, and while it is quite charming the story seems a lot less clear, in ways both good and bad, and it isn't as mechanically polished as IV.
BoF 4 is the best. The story, the cast, battle system, graphic and music are incredible. when I was a child, I always wanted Suikoden 2 to be remaked using this graphic
performance, battle looks, sprite, mechanic battle, i think this was improvement that 3. but man..... the story for BoF 4 left bitter taste in my memories since the source of evil and this trouble Yuna still alive and free. in story 3 still really better than 4
BOF3 was better in every way. Can't really explain why. It just felt like more of an epic coming of age story/journey compared to BOF4. BOF4 felt rushed and the plot threads at the end are dark and ultimately anti-climactic. In other words, even though the game looks and plays good for the majority of the playtime it just ends up feeling unsatisfying by the end. I'm not saying BOF3's ending is that great, but I felt more satisfied when I finished that one.
Bof4 needed to continue after Ryu assimilated foulu and go for a quest to find Yuna and kill him/her, the true mind behind the god summoning contrivance
Not really I hated BOTH this one and the Previous 3rd game and that's only because the required MINI games that I found nearly IMPOSSIBLE For me to complete due to the timer where you barely have 1 to 2 minutes to complete those mini games. That's why for Me the better games are the FIRST 2 but I still prefer the 1st game since Breath of Fire 2 takes TOO long to lv up the first game its too EASY to gain levels.
4 easily is my favorite. I never liked the characters in 3, and found them to be too annoying coming from 2, and after playing 4. It's too late for me to like 3, because the rest of the series just feels better to me at this point
Transformomg into a dragon was one of the core gameplay elements up until this game. I think that's why I didn't take to it the same as 1 2 or 3. When you have a series going, and you strip out or water down a core element that gives a series its identity, you start losing me. BoF3 will always be at the top of my list. BoF2 is a very close second place. I'd rank 4 down with 1. Not bad but not better.
its really a toss up to fans of whats better, 3 or 4. IMO 3 had better Dragon Transformations by miles, the actual transformations in 4 were kinda garbage but on the flipside, 4s combat with elemental field stacking and Dragon God breaths was pretty stellar. also 3 had a more likable cast of characters that each got their own real chance to shine. whereas 4's Antagonist Fou' lou was one of the coolest ever and being able to play the story from his perspective only added to the games depth. fishing was better in 3 but masters were better in 4. its really a toss up.
i prefer 4 due to its... vibe. I miss the gene system and the story was a bit unexplored lorewise. But aside from that BoF4 was just way more fun to me in nearly all other regards. I wish they did BoF7 in a similar way. get rid of the polygon models. keep it pixel art and make sure dragons are a core element of the story and not just obstacles you stumble upon.
My vote goes to BoF3. I liked the characters better, you had more freedom to explore, the Dragon Gene system was awesome, the story made you ask several moral questions, it felt more like a true journey of discovery with loyal friends by your side, and I liked the fact that you went from childhood to adulthood, showing the characters growing and developing. I have trouble liking BoF4. I don't like most of the characters, there is no freedom to explore, as everything is on the rails, the combo system, while cool, relies heavily on the characters' Agility to properly time them (plus it robs some staple elements like Lightning from the main magic list), the Dragon transformations are a letdown, the Master System is a bit more convoluted and complicated, there are too many mandatory minigames, the Fairy Village is bit of a downgrade, and the story isn't as thought-provoking as 3, feeling more like a "back to basics" kind of thing. The sprites and music are great, though, but a lot about it falls somewhat flat. In my personal ranking, it ranks third, behind 3 and 2, who are first and second, respectively. 4 isn't bad per se, but I feel 3 far outstrips it.
Wonderful video as always. Keep up the Great work. I'm not a stickler by any means for pronunciations, but could you please please learn how to pronounce Ryu?
Breath of fire 3 all the way. Breath of fire 4 is great too but just not quite there for me. Bof3 is just a masterpiece with music, combat, visuals, much more dragon forms. It's just sweet.
Breath of Fire III is the best game in the series….actually it was so well done, that all the other BoF games let me down cause I was so SPOILED to BoF III 😂
Breath of fire 4 can be confused as a PS2 game,as a matter of fact its more beautiful than some ps2 titles(Ex. suikoden 3 🙄) if Only the bosses were spritebased like 3 it would have been soo beautiful
Not the best, I didn’t care much for the dragons, not the biggest of turn offs for me, no that would be the never ending mini games… Still, I never completed this one, because of the mini games. Maybe it would be my new favorite game because of a fantastic story, and conclusion with the greatest game boss in any turn based Jrpg, but I don’t think I will ever know… Because of the mini games.
I loved this game...I thought it was a really good RPG ...not as good as the 3rd but very enjoyable..with one massive flaw that always annoyed me...the lack of the gene system..I know that was basically exclusive to bode but in comparison the Ascension system in this game felt lazy
Funny, Breath of Fire 4 is NOT among my favorite BoF games. I mean, I definitely prefer it over 5. But 1 and 4 are not games that I regard highly either. 2 and 3 are the best entries for me. I still, thinkb4 it's a decent game, but I also hated the Fou-lu parts a lot, they bored me to tears, and I also hate Ryu's design is this game. That said, I loved Nina's design, I still prefer Bof2 Nina, tho. Most of the music in this game is also a hit or miss for me.
It was an odd duck of a game. Not bad, but imo not that good either. Liked, but not loved. Same with 3, though I like it a little better than 4. In large part due to the Dragon forms not sucking owlballs.
The only thing breath of fire 4 has over breath of fire 3 is it's story, and even then I prefer breath of fire 3's story since it more clearly fits in with story of the 2 prior games. Overall I think breath of fire 4 was a step down in the series with 3 being the highest point, of course 4 is still worth playing even dragon quarter is, point is why is breath of fire a dead franchise? Capcom you assholes!!
The 2 main things they failed in BOF4 that they should have brought from BOF3 is the gene combining and travel the world map instead if its linear overworld traveling it has.
Breath of Fire 3 was awesome except for the monkey that's wave the red flag around too much that sucked one of the reason why it's a dead franchise shame on you Capcom
To be honest 4 killed it. The ending was stupid and the dark plot threads that actually were interesting essentially went nowhere. Very unsatisfying. Is the game a total failure? No. But it lowered the bar enough that the series never recovered.
@@PS1Fan1991 I didn't like the characters, the plot and hated the aesthetic u were just underground trying to beat a clock. Worst ideas ever. I just wanted 4 again or 3

For me, and this is coming from having gotten right to the end of IV but lost my save file, IV is quite a bit behind III.
It’s been a long time since I played 4 and 3 I played when it got launched. Remember liking 3 more but 4 was a great game too.
I haven't even watched the video and I already know it's gonna be high quality and interesting.
4 is my fav game alltime it graphicly aged so well to
Great channel! You have earned a brand new sub!
Thank you!
5 was a both great and misunderstood game, which exposed many so called fans of the saga and non fans too. People cannot accept changes.
Yeah. And probably an hour if you are overleveled.
@@MyNameisRevenant Well, what really helped me was get the maximum amount of fairies to mature, and used them in a very long combo on the boss.
That cut down their HP significantly.
You can get the holy mantle (Less encounters) early in Bof 3. By fishing.
What censorship? Especially late game censorship? I don't know much about any of that
@@orinanime Scias was an alcoholic, not a stutterer. Fou-Lu decapitated Emperor Soniel. Ursula was rather... _annoyed_ ...that characters had issues understanding her gender. Any scenes deemed "too sexy" was cut entirely.
Graphics were great, actually.
@@PsychomachineryEBM Never said they weren't. However, they were _very_ drab, with only a few locations in the entire game showing a hint of vibrancy.
@@ChaoticHoly wait. You're considering the watercolor like palettes as drab; but watercolor shades tend to be more faded or "washed out" by nature. combine this with the psx compressing the data to a level the hardware can handle and yeah. it'll look rough. :/
Definitely 4 for me
is this are game hard to play and does it include a map marker in game
Great channel, Xygor. Breath of Fire IV was fantastic, especially the soundtrack. But my heart beats for Breath of Fire III.
For me they are 2 different games to even compare as i take them as a duology cause they were so ahead of 1 and 2.
I can't believe you didn't mention the minigames.
The "bad" ending was so cool to do. Becoming God and .... (no spoilers 😉)
Needs to be on the switch like last year, 3 and 4
I probably already said this in other BoF IV videos, but my main problem with the games is the last chapter, it was a miss oportunity, the game could've use its time to futher develop more the main characters, but in exchange you get a ship mini game and a bunch of filler story.
It might be the best IF the camera system wasn't annoying and the world map wasn't locked linear.
i love this game bring back memories.. the animation is awesome too and the story is better
Yea I liked the overall vibe and mechanics in BOFIII better but I do appreciate the advancements of 4
I played Breath of Fire IV back in the day, and while the story is "good", the characters are very memorable and the battle system is a LOT of fun ... there were also quite a few sour spots I definitely hated at the time (and even today still don't/can't appreciate), even if some of them are bit-part issues like the overly Eastern approach to its "dragon" creature design.
I have played bits of Breath of Fire III, and while it is quite charming the story seems a lot less clear, in ways both good and bad, and it isn't as mechanically polished as IV.
BoF 4 is the best. The story, the cast, battle system, graphic and music are incredible. when I was a child, I always wanted Suikoden 2 to be remaked using this graphic
performance, battle looks, sprite, mechanic battle, i think this was improvement that 3. but man..... the story for BoF 4 left bitter taste in my memories since the source of evil and this trouble Yuna still alive and free. in story 3 still really better than 4
Looks beautiful
3 had the better dragon transformations, but I think 4 has fewer parts that suck when you replay the games.
I like 4’s aesthetics but 3’s gameplay.
Great game, great graphics for the time, it was an enjoyable play. I loved it back then and am happy my original it’s still in my collection
IV is better than III though it's a bit too easy. I like both II and V more than either of them.
Bof 4 is my favorite in the saga, and I preffer Bof 2 over Bof3 by a mile.
Honestly same
BOF3😍
That’s a good one!
BoF 4 had a samurai dog. 10/10
Breath of Fire 2 has Nina with Black Wings 100/100
Ok its a toughy but for me I have to say 1, 3, 4, 2. Like you I'd say 3 only beats out 4 by a hair.
Interesting order, but appreciate your point of view!
I Love all of the breath of the wild games. But hands down this one is the best.
i prefer 4 due to its...
Great game nearly on par with 3 for me
My vote goes to BoF3.
I love this!
Because of how good 3 and 4 were, i was waiting for 5, and then we got that freaking Dragon Quarter 🙄😴😒
For me bof2 is the best. But bof4 is my second favorite
BOF 3 is the greatest, then 4, DQ, 2, and 1, in that order.
6 does not exist.
I loved this game...I thought it was a really good RPG ...not as good as the 3rd but very enjoyable..with one massive flaw that always annoyed me...the lack of the gene system..I know that was basically exclusive to bode but in comparison the Ascension system in this game felt lazy
Bof3
With no drought 4th is the best. Until even today its other titles doesn't match with it.
Personally, 4 had the better gameplay but 3 had the better story.
Loved BoF3 but couldnt get into 4 when it first came out.
Maybe give it another shot now.
3 is the best in the series
The 2 main things they failed in BOF4 that they should have brought from BOF3 is the gene combining and travel the world map instead if its linear overworld traveling it has.
Breath of Fire 3 was awesome except for the monkey that's wave the red flag around too much that sucked one of the reason why it's a dead franchise shame on you Capcom
Breath of fire 5 killed the series and was the actual worse rpg I've ever played, I still cry thinking about it
Nah. 5 was rough, but nothing that couldn't be recovered from. But 6? 6 killed it when they reduced it to an online play mobile gacha
To be honest 4 killed it. The ending was stupid and the dark plot threads that actually were interesting essentially went nowhere. Very unsatisfying. Is the game a total failure? No. But it lowered the bar enough that the series never recovered.
I don't know what RPGs you have played then, but they must be 10/10 because I think that BoF V: DQ is a fantastic game and so do many others.
@@PS1Fan1991 I didn't like the characters, the plot and hated the aesthetic u were just underground trying to beat a clock. Worst ideas ever. I just wanted 4 again or 3
@@PS1Fan1991 well yea, skies of Arcadia, legend of mana, grandia 1 and 2, tales of symphonia and destiny, star ocean 2, mario rpg, ff 7 8 n 10, wild arms, chrono crisis and trigger xenogears, xeno saga was the most boring middle of the road game ever tho lol. All of that list except 4 are 10/10 to me and 5 just bored me, question, do u ever Masher it to the surface and meet more characters and lands b4 the game ends???
