it's neat when things line up rhythmically like that. There have been times in other videos where he coincidentally threw fireballs or jumped perfectly in tune with the bgm and it's always a treat.

Creator here. Very happy to see this. :) The intended method for the 7-1 part is to use a bullet bill for the first two jumps, which you have plenty of time to react to. However, for the last bit you have to land on the small launcher at the bottom and make the jump from there. Requiring a bullet bill jump there is certainly bs. And yeah, the cycles are kind of an annoying thing at times. The second game I think has some sharper design though, but it is definitely harder. Can't wait to see you play it.
And yes, I have beaten both games multiple times without save states.

@@Kosmicd12 You stand on the ledge of the small launcher and can do a standing jump straight to the bigger one. It's only a 4 block vertical :)

My headcanon is that it's called Super Mario 0 because it portrays the struggles Mario had on his first adventure back when he was inexperienced. Hence why everything seems so hard!

I'm pretty sure the section with the row of kaizo blocks at 16 minutes you were meant to get to the end, then drop down on the bullet bill launcher, and jump around the left of the fire bar.
Hmm, good idea. Not sure if you can make that jump, but maybe you're right

Dude, when you played that shiny teeth song I had a trippy flashback to a forgotten dream I had a while back where I was in some mansion somewhere with some family I'd never met who just kept showing off in the most snooty manner. And then boom, I was in a room I recognized from your videos! It was your room! At least that's what my dream told me. Sorry to disappoint you though. Now that I can picture it, it's not at all like this room. It was a dark, blue-ish room with parts of the walls covered in something resembling ceramic tiles, a desk was wrapped around the far and left walls of the room, with shelves and cupboards above and light strips below the cupboards. I don't have a clue where that setup came from. I can't think of anywhere I would have seen something like it. (Did I mention that the "fourth wall" was missing, like the whole room was just a set, and on the other side of the set was a rain forest? Are you keeping something from us?) Actually, maybe I pictured something fabricated with the color scheme and tileset of SMB World 1-2. That actually explains a lot. So yeah, you were probably just the last RUclipsr I watched that night and then my mind played tricks on my insecurities by making me confront the success of another RUclipsr on a personal level. Dreams suck sometimes, haha.
17:00 I don't think this was unfair. You're probably supposed to go down and land on the low bullet launcher, then jump around the firebar with good timing. It doesn't seem easy, but I'm pretty sure you have enough height to make it and I'm confident kosmic could have done it if he tried. That is, unless there was an invisible block above that spot, which doesn't seem likely.
Now that I think about it, if the pattern of invisible blocks stays constant there and there's one above the short launcher, you can just run through the tall launcher easily.
Been loving these videos of yours Kosmic. The blend of humor, technical knowledge (ie. explaining what happened and what should have happened), game play and the video editing has been superb. Keep up the great work!

This is a very creatively designed hack. It's amazing how much life you can breathe into a game with so little mechanics. No vertical scrolling, now leftward scrolling, no slopes, but still fun.
Bismuth really knocked this one out of the park. Lots of great music-preserving edits here.
I know Super Mario Bros. was never rooted in reality but fire bars in mid air with nothing solid attached to it still makes me do a double take.
(16:42) For this part, I'm pretty sure you're meant to fall onto the lower cannon, and then do a normal jump around the Fire Bar, similar to the jump you perform at 25:42.

This hack might be my favorite smb1 hack.
I definitely didn't think this hack would be so good, when you started it! It does get rather difficult by the end, though, I think it would take me a very long time to beat without save states, even if I used the trick to start from the beginning of the world after a game over... not that it matters much, as while I would like to play it, I do not have an NES, and my only ways to play Super Mario Bros. are on Game & Watch (35) and on Switch Online, neither of which lets you play hacks, I think. Thanks for showing off the hack! I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel.
For what it's worth, this one looks like you don't lose lives when you die. A few hacks seem to do this, though I want to say this is the first I've seen where instead of giving you cloud 5 lives, it just doesn't increment them down. Also, if you have a PC, or are willing to put time into hacking a 3ds, you might have the ability to play it already.

Surely similar things have been said before, but I really think it's cool to see you play these hacks because... I guess there's a brief time when I can empathize vs. when you're kicking the 💩out of SMB1? I'm better at it than most of the folks I sit in a room and play games with (we almost always use controllers with wires lol) but I'm too impatient to learn how to do any frame-perfect stuff at will... Being able to occasionally empathize with a master makes me feel a little bit awesome lol

What does he mean when he says stuff like "5-4 is 2-4"? Are they based on the original version, or is it literally just a harder version of the same level from earlier for some reason?
Both. Level data is actually reused. 5-3 reuses 1-3. 5-4 reuses 2-4. 6-4 reuses 1-4. 7-2 reuses 2-2. 7-3 reuses 2-3. In all cases, some extra obstacles are added (more bloopers, more fire bars, bullet bills...).

It's worth noting that in 1985, Super Mario Bros. had an exceptional amount of content. There were other big games, but most were a lot shorter, and then repeated, with some things changed to make it harder. Think of Donkey Kong (1981), with its four levels.
Super Mario Bros. does repeat as well, when you finish it, with faster enemies, buzzy beetles instead of goombas, and smaller platforms.
