This would have been hands down the best selling Mario game if it was released on the NES while they were still being made. So impressive what's been done.

This hack is so good that I feel comfortable giving one genuine critique of it. If a player skips the hint using a warp zone, then they have no way of knowing to fall underground. That's the only thing really wrong, other than the difficulty curve being really slow and then really steep. Like I said, the hack is very good and so was the video :)
This is a good point, though if people are taking the warp zones, presumably they have played the game before, or they may have to play it through the normal way to "learn a secret".

@@607 keep in mind most romhacks do "cheat" a little bit by allowing for bigger rom sizes than the original devs were allowed due to cartridge manufacturing costs. so romhacks will probably always be able to get away with more than their source game. the original smb was only 31kb, but i imagine this hack is probably quite a bit more (a quick google search suggests the NES could go up to 1Mb)
this one is breathtaking graphically. very sharp mix of reused and original sprites but also a lot of really impressive little things in terms of animations, palette work, and a very clean HUD. smb1's unidirectional scroll axis keeps the right edge of the screen clean, which makes a big difference overall IMO relative to smb3. spectacular stuff, nevermind all of the gameplay/QoL improvements, level design, etc!
@@the-engneer Yes, and a bunch would even work on a home-brew cartridge in a non-modded nes since they don't exceed the limitatons of the hardware. They didn't have the best piracy detection in NES days, even up to Dreamcast.

Nice, I've been meaning to check out the new deluxe edition of this hack. I don't know if you figured it out later, but the star in 8-1 appears to be your reward for bouncing on the koopas enough times, since lives are meaningless here.
That was so good. It appears to be less of a hack and more of an original game. Normally "hacks" use a particular "Mario game engine" 1,2,3,US 2, etc., but this game contained elements from all 4 and unique elements that none of them contain, Very cool!

Do you include staff roll music? Because Super Mario Land's ending does for a big part play during the credits, if I recall correctly. In that case, I disagree: in my opinion #1 is Mario Kart Wii, #2 is Super Mario Galaxy, and #3 is Yoshi's Island. #4 is Super Mario Land.

I think because there are unlimited lives, you instead get a star for any situation in which you would normally get a 1-UP, like 100 coins or bouncing on a large number of enemies
i think the star thing is because when you would normally get a 1up from bouncing on enemies, it gives you a star since lives arent a thing in this hack
A lot of the stuff I'm seeing him talk about like going straight to fire from small or only going down one level when hurt or piranah plants with shells all happen in Mario 3 on the Gameboy
I wish games/hacks like this were taken more seriously in the speedrun community. I love watching smb2j and super mario 64 speedruns but I wanna see more people run games like this
20:22 Actually it was never possible to kill a Spiny from underneath in SMB1, unless you did the glitch from the left side of the screen which would turn them into Koopa shells. They wouldn’t be vulnerable by default this way from underneath until SMB3 when Spiny shells were introduced.
@@Kosmicd12 Understandable, as the graphics do more closely resemble later games. Heck, I’d be thrown off by the low platforms on the first stage, looking a lot like the SMB 2 / 3 ones that you can normally jump up through.
the beginning of the first level is DEFINETLY from mario world, i think its eitehr 1-1 or 1-2, one of the levels branching off of yoshis house on the world map

The NES did have a way of playing high quality audio, but it took up so much space that barely any game used it.
