Kinda makes me sad seeing this. The visuals (parallax scrolling and going left in original SMB for example) and music are impressive, but the overall game design disappointed me. I am not against puzzle games at all, it just has some really, really cheap things.
I just realized the reason behind calling it Rohrleitung Gate, it's because Stein is stone in German and Mario is a plumber so it's "pipe" (piping) gate
Add infinite lives, a checkpoint at the start of every room, show the invisible blocks, show the false walls in a subtle way, then you might have something with this hack. Would probably still need some revision on some of the puzzles but it'd be a good start.
@@Kosmicd12 that because this is unfinished and only alpha timeline is complete in this hack, w7n lacks level design of this project and lacks of activity on that time. This project was discontinued after he backs online and started a new project called Mario gaiden. Also during this hack development w7n was working on how to get backward scrolling works, it was works in only two pages on that time. This hack was the only one patched most common smb1 glitches that infects the gameplay of those puzzles, and those puzzles are supposed to be hard and tricky.
I agree with checkpoints and infinite lives, but what's the point of having invisible blocks or false walls if you just show the player where they are anyway?
Wow this hack had so much potential. Just a few small changes and this one could have been great. I know it probably sucked playing it, but it was fun to watch at least.

I saw about 20 minutes of this stream, all of it during a single "puzzle". I started when Kosmic was over two hours in, so at first I assumed world alpha was some secret ultra hard bonus world. I knew this hack was something evil when I found out that he wasn't even halfway through the second level.

The bad : >Level design's ranging from semi decent to horrifically hard. If Kosmic is having issues with it, I don't think most people (including myself) could even stand a chance of finishing this.
It's obvious that it's based on that one scene in Steins;Gate. Down to Peach's pocket watch stopped working, Peach's various deaths, the fact that Peach died at the end anyway, and even the word "Unnecessary" alluding to that scene as well. Which leaves me wondering if this romhack's unfinished. If you play the VN/watch the anime you realized the meaning of α, and there should've been world β as well to make it finish similar to S;G.
@@Gettenhart Absolutely. Trust me, no amount of spoilers would detract from how good S;G is Heck, the spoiler on this comment is really light considering what actually happened in S;G.

@johnnymix00 from the comments "I still don't get the plot of this romhack, peach's watch stopped working, ok so what" Oh boy, you haven't seen Steins;Gate huh? That's where this music is from. It might take a while to get into, but I highly recommend watching the anime or maybe even the visual novel if you're into that.
At least you can scroll left, and there's music and references from Steins;Gate, even in the title itself 👀 (Only a few minutes in, but it seems those are the only positive points I'll be able to point lol)
Usually whenever he gets a new Rom hack he glitches it immediately by wall clipping to establish dominance. First time I think he hasn't done it. EDIT: Ah there we go. 2:54.
Rohrleitung is german for pipeline. In english (as foreign language) class we had a vocabulary test, one of the words was pipeline. We mustn't use the anglicism Pipeline. This is where my brain got stuck into finding the right translation. This is a reason why I use longer german words instead of shorter and "cooler" sounding anglicisms.
Ive been watching several of your vids the last couple weeks. Hadnt heard of you until i got my nes everdrive and started exploring rom hacks, nothing like playing them on the hardware. This was your best vid yet, well done.
He is mentally done. Not in the sense that he would quit that considering he played until the end. But in that by that screen, which literally feels like a trap until you move to the left or right to hit an invisible wall, would doom this game to be the worst game he has ever played and that he is only playing this because it’s his job and a custom. It’s not that bad here as he is still interested here, but he does dislike the game already and it never lets up.
New definition of insanity is twofold: making a Mario puzzle game full of really hard tricks that there aren't clues to (just have to guess what to do), and then someone proceeding to PLAY said puzzle game. In any sense, this is a GOOD type of insane. XD
Watching Kosmic get tripped up by the screen being able to scroll left is kind of endearing, lol🤭 I grew up with 2.5d mario games and being able to scroll left, so when I first tried to play smb 1 (which is a lot more difficult than Kosmic makes it look), not being able to scroll left made up about 50% of my deaths.😅
14:27 If you watch the Koopa walk frame by frame, you can see it dips into the first block and turns right. It turns around because it walks into a block or a wall, but that protection isn’t there the second time. Very interesting.
Actually, Mario was too late, and due to the laws of time travel, Peach died before Mario exited the wormhole, and at the exact time Mario exited the wormhole, Mario still haven't gotten close to Peach.
Just a few minutes into the video but this ROM is seriously creepy. I'm sorta expecting it to trap Kosmic like in the Godzilla: Monster of Monsters Creepypasta.
I ended up skipping to the end and watching the whole Bowser fight. Wow. That's...just, like, why? That hack must have taken so many hours to make, so why make it bad on purpose? Why?
Never in my life did I expect to see something like this. Literally one of the best and worst things I've ever seen - all from the ROM of a 1985 video game. What a timeline.
How’s it even possible to scroll to the left? I thought the SMB1 engine stored its level data in a way which made that impossible, or at least INCREDIBLY impractical.
I don't think this would be capable of being played on original chipset in the same cart that SMB was originally on. If they put this game using a similar chipset as SMB3, for example, which allows far more advanced features, including scrolling in both directions, then they could put this on the original NES hardware. Judging by the sound of the music in this ROM, I think that's exactly what they did, because it also utilizes the DPCM channel that the original game did not have.
@@DemureDave It's not about the chipset, but about the engine. The base NES chipset (i.e. mapperless) does allow scrolling in both directions already. What SMB3's chipset added was the ability to scroll both horizontally and vertically at the same time (at least fluidly). That's not what's being done here. For that matter there's a few earlier NES games which were mapperless but managed to get 360° scrolling to some extent; for example, Raid over Bungeling Bay, which doesn't use a mapper. (It scrolls smoothly on the X axis in hardware and jerkily on the Y axis in software.) DPCM was also very much available to SMB1 at a hardware level, it just wasn't used much since DPCM takes up a lot of PRG space and the SMB1 PRG ROM size was very small.
The reason this so frustrating is because a lot of these puzzles could be really good if there were **ANY** context clues, but the constant expectations of random wall clips and invisible blocks made it so solving them isn’t even satisfying.
You literally can't solve a puzzle your first time in the level, you're FORCED to fail multiple times just to reveal the multiple fake walls and invisible blocks That is just trial and error, WHAT TYPE OF GOOD PUZZLE GAME MANDATES YOU TO SCREW AROUND ON EVERYTHING BEFORE *ACTUALLY ATTEMPTING TO SOLVE THE LEVEL?* Even by using save states, you're just required to mess around with every single shell, every single opening to get a chance of solving the puzzle, how is that funn
Not shocked that someone who made such an evil, stupid, trolly hack decided it would be cool to design it around Steins Gate. That shouldve been the first red flag
Is there a version someone has made of the original SMB1 that allows you to go backwards? Would love to see that feature esp. if you could do level design with an editor, though unlikely. I tried to use a level editor on the version that allowed simultaneous co-op and it did not work.
By the way, this hack is written in German because of the theme of time travel as Einstein created the theory of relativity, the basis of time travel, and he was German. This hack features Mario hopping through a secret wormhole into the space-time continuum to rescue Princess Peach from being killed. I think the ghost of Einstein created the wormholes for Mario to enter. The space-time continuum has lots of tunnels, each leading to a certain era in the past. Some tunnels lead to black holes, which represents the pits and enemies in the game. When the game over screen shows up, it represents Mario time traveling back to the present time due to being stuck in the space-time continuum. When Mario chooses a wrong tunnel, it sends him to a bad era, and he is forced to go back to the last location he visited. When Mario reaches a castle level, he "exits" the space-time continuum and enters an era of the past, but once he realizes he's too late, he decides to time travel again into a different era for a better chance of arriving early. However, the more back in time you want to travel, the more time you have to spend in the space-time continuum. The "alpha" symbol in the world represents the wormhole Mario took to travel through time. The last castle had Bowser because Mario traveled back in time before Bowser was defeated. Every time he time traveled, he always was too late. When it stated that the irreversible reboot is inescapable, it was a warning stated if Mario went into the 3 wormholes he had previously went, he would get stuck there forever. The last world, alpha-4, stated that he has time traveled tons of times, each time travel represented his fails of saving the princess.

@@davidrussell8488I recently got smb1 & 2 for my twin Famicom & because I hadn’t played either in several months I made lots of mistakes like that lol. I played smb3 right before I got those two
47:38 "They're all marde" (French for shit (Literally) XD
You must be Quebecois lol
34:55, well at least he didnt break your ribs with a hug
The Steins;gate theme is so nostalgic!
I'm curious to know if there's a good ending if you beat stage 3 on hard mode (stage 4 start).
Where I can find the uncut version of this stream, Kosmic? Thanks
The puzzles and the story in this hack are straight up depressing
Furthermore, there is no good ending to look for.
This reminded me of the game Lemmings. On the hardest difficulty settings.
Speedrun time...
I wonder if this hack has been improved since then
clearly it has potential, but good god is it a slog to watch, I can't imagine how it felt to play
Hey Kosmic, do you have a running list of Rom hacks that you think are worth checking out?
I just dig the parallax scrolling and neat effects
What does the hard mode do? I mean except more misery to get (probably) the same ending?
broooo, the music is gates of steiner, it sounded familiar but it took me forever to put my finger on it
Don't know why you're complaining. This is one of the best rom hacks out there.
visually this game is amazing, also the new sounds are nice
Sound byte of dying sounds like contra death
