It's probably determined before birth, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's genetic. It's likely to be a combination of factors; genetic (probably more than one gene), the effect of hormones in the womb, and epigenetics (changes in the way genes are expressed, but not actual changes in the base sequence within genes).
I hate how some people get offended by the fact that homosexualism gets studied. Twist and turn it however you like, it's still a form of behaviour that doesn't make sense from a purely biological standpoint. This makes it interesting to study and learn more about
It does make sense. They explain this, and behavioral biologists have been doing so for decades. When you have family members who contribute but don't reproduce, you have more people generating resources for the family without consuming resources with additional children. This helps ensure the family genes are passed on. It's so simple, it can be explained in a RUclips comment.
I saw an LGBTQ flag hung in front of my school and church. In front of my church, it said "Happy Pride Month- God Loves Us All." I hope soon more people can become open minded like that church.
Can you do a video on this but for gender dysphoria? I honestly think it'd be so much easier to get rid of dysphoria and live as your birth sex than to transition.
Zuko Sama People would also feel less of a need to transition if society didn't expect everyone to fit into binary gender norms according to their appearance. Maybe some trans people would still want to transition physically, but it would be nice if people could just be themselves regardless of outward appearance.
I’d say that you should use CRISPR to help fix genetic failures. For me I have Warrdenburg syndrome which caused me to be completely deaf in both ears among other things. I would have loved to not be deaf. I think helping people is good. But changing things like eye color and hair color aren’t necessary and could be harmful.
I just discovered this channel and i am in love with it. It is so great to have scientists who are proud of their sexuality and share their knowledge with others. I myself have several friends in the lgbtq community. And even though i don't know my prefference or if I have one I will actively be an ally. Because all people are equal despite skin color, sexuality, or gender.
Sexual Orientation is a post natal phenotype that begins to develop around 4-10 yrs in Hypothalamic Sexually Dimorphic Nucleus (SDN) region of the brain, using optogenetics and CRISPR/Cas9 it is possible to alter homosexuality, heterosexuality, bisexuality etc.
I think we need to build a society that is accepting of all differences and abilities. We are than a richer more compassionate society. I have MS and in a wheelchair and of course I say I want to walk again. But I am a better person because of my struggles and I like myself more now than I ever did before. I am happy about myself. Fixing everything we think is broken is a huge deal and I think could change society in many unexpected ways.

Wow this video really scared me... and I am not even part of the LGBTQ+ community, being a straight girl. I just CANNOT believe still in 2017 (now 2018), and in a future where CRISPR is more common, people would try to get rid of homosexuality. In my opinion, it is beautiful to see different types of love, and I don't see how loving whoever we want affects other people. However, I am curious to see if genes really do control homosexuality and how so. I just hope that when we do find out, that it won't be used against the LGBTQ+ community. Love you both, and I gotta say I met you tonight in Montreal when you were at McGill, and it was truly an honor!!!

Technically speaking homosexuality IS a social construct. In several ancient societies (such as Greeks and early Roman’s) people just slept with other people because they wanted to, regardless of who they were and what parts they had. Those who only slept with one or the other sex were just labeled as “picky”
HOMOSEXUALITY ISN'T A LIGHTSWITCH! YOU CAN'T JUST "TURN IT OFF!" Believe me. I've tried. My life would be easier if it were that way. I accept myself NOW, and I'm a proud lesbian!
I’m bisexual and I’m curious in the science behind why I’m bisexual. I know that there are people that will misuse information though so we also have to be careful.
I’m really glad you made this video. I was beginning to force myself to think I’m not straight because a lot of my friends were coming out saying that they were part of the LGBT community. Don’t misunderstand. I am all for LGBT awareness. It’s just I was beginning to feel very left out. But now that I know it might just have to do with genes and it’s not something you can control, this made me feel a lot better and made me much happier because I don’t think I’m much of an outsider anymore and just someone who doesn’t have the same gene. And no one has the same genes, that’s why we all look different. So thank you. This just lifted a huge weight off my shoulders.
"homosexuality is a social construct" i mean everything is a social construct, but the labels are the construct not the facts. being attracted to one gender or other genders is a fact; but the idea that we have to label it all is a costruct. Take me for example, im a trans nonbinary demiboy, gray-asexual and demi-romantic. its a mouthful, but some peoplr want to hear more than "im not a girl or a boy and i love my girlfriends very very much." That part is the social construct.
Love that you guys are talking about this! As a lesbian in the science field I've always been kind of frustrated with how little research is done on homosexuality as a concept, especially in women. Of course I understand that others are worried this kind of research could do more harm than good, but science is about gaining understanding about ourselves and the world around us and as long as the studies are unbiased I think it'd be great! I'm against genetic engineering in general tbh I think it's the kind of thing that would just be wrong for us to mess with. We shouldn't have that kind of power.
I live in a country where neither marriage nor adoption is legal for honosexualists. Society is also not very welcoming for homosexuals. I don't think that normal life without having to hide your sexuality is possible here :( I think you are doing a geat job talking about these topics, making people more aware, maybe even more open minded. I hope one day we will all have the same rights and noone will tell people who they can marry. I really like that in your videos you are driving people's attention to the problem of women being underrepresented and other female related topics. People often comment that you are too feminine but I don't agree. You are just yourselves and you seem be very interested in topics that most guys just don't care about.
The thought of a child’s parent full proof making their kid straight before they are born is just horrifying. Just the fact of people mix and matching their child’s genes to how THEY want it just diminishes any hope I had for this world. I could understand if they alter their child to make sure they aren’t susceptible to medical diseases but imagine. Parent could make their children however they want, without the kids consent, because well they wouldn’t be born yet, but still.
What I’m wondering is how ethical it would be? On one hand, I love being bi and nowadays I wouldn’t change it for the world but if someone really genuinely hates their sexuality, would it be cruel to not offer them the choice to change it?
Well I mean the reason people can hate their sexuality is b/c other people tell them that they are a monster, are a Statan worshipper, are a pedo, that they will burn in hell, etc.
This kind of information is so fascinating and useful! It’s science, and it’s explaining how things actually work. For those of us who care how things actually happen, who aren’t afraid to learn, even if it has to change our minds, this is invaluable! It’s too bad that so many people are anti-science and simply dismiss this data, choosing instead to condemn others for perceived transgression of mythological laws.
@fupmi I'm married and I want to sleep with every girl I find attractive. But I don't because it's wrong. Just because you have a desire, doesn't mean you should act on it.
Every time I see a video about CRISPR I think, what would this mean for forensics, sexuality, neurological and mental disorders and stuff similar to that.
I hope that we don't get to the point where people can choose how children are. Babies are not some video game characters that you can customize. They're human beings that need to find themselves through experience, not from being like that since birth.
If Mitch is the one whit the darker skin, I like Mitch's voice and his facial expressions when he's speaking normally. It looks kinda cute in some ways and his voice feels warm
Just a point of clarification: Genes don't control everything exactly. Epigenetics is how environmental factors like prenatal hormones influencing how genes express themselves. It's an evolutionary adaptation that allows physiology to adapt to rapid changes in our environment that genetics can't keep up with. There's some strong theories that homosexuality is a product of epigenetics, not explicitly genetics.
I think it's important to understand that it's not a choice, but I'm worried that it could lead to prenatal testing, and from there lead to neglect, abuse, or selective abortion- similar to how girls are treated today in countries where boys are preferred.
Honestly I hope soon in the future we really will be able to pick our kids' genes. I wouldn't use it for things such as sexuality. I have fibromyalgia and it's been passed down to all of the women on my mom's side. I would like to use it to make sure I wouldn't pass it down to my children. It would be amazing if we could prevent genetic illnesses.
I can't even tell you how many times my school and teachers forced going into science on me as a girl and still in high school as a young adult -.- At least the idea of it. There are more men actually making a career with science because it's just generally more appealing to them. GENERALLY men and boys like mechanical things while women and girls like emotional. Generally. It's not because of "oppression" or anything like that. It's just mental and genetic differences between males and females.

Homestly, I think there should be a way to convert sexualities. Suicide rates are higher for us LGBT people. Life just isn’t fair. Some people (including me) would much rather be straight because life is so much easier. You aren’t bullied for something you can’t changed, and religious people can’t use their beliefs against you. If there was a way to convert, suicides among LGBT Youth would decrease.
I kind of feel like a privileged lesbian. I have grown up in the UK where homosexually was legalised the year I was born and through high school I wasn't afraid to come out since I have two great friends: one lesbian, like me, and the other bisexual. They both helped me with comming out to my girlfriend and we have been happy for almost a year now.😊
I lowkey just wanted them to be like "yes you can be straight and here is the pill to take for it." but then I remembered how much I love myself as I am. And hopefully someone else in the future.
Eh I want a world where people can make the choice to be whatever they want to be. Be it different races, sexualities, genders and body characteristics. I want a world where everything is a choice that everything can be chosen so you aren't bound to your original genetic destiny. I would argue that a world like this would have its benefits, for instance everyone would be able to empathise with marginalised groups by temporarily becoming them. I think its the only way to truly get rid of prejudice. It will always be an us vs them mentality till you make it so them is also us and us is also them. Its harder to hate on a group if being in that group is as relevant as wearing a different colour T-shirt. And besides from very specific gang warfare thats not something that happens a lot.
StormyDmaster Despite loving this utopian idea, it just can't work. What you seem to be suggesting is far from genetics and things to do with how brains work, it also delves into cultural and heritage-based things which cannot be gained or modified. Very far from what science can change in one's body.
Thats where you are wrong kiddo. You simply digitize the mind and then you can make various bio mechanical interfaces for your consciousness. And bam you have infinite freedom. You could look through your closet each morning deciding what body to inhabit for that day. Plus you could always just have a generic "BLANK culture.exe" file inside your newly digitized brain and bam you can see everything like a certain culture does, like your entire life you were raised by that culture. So basically when downloadable knowledge becomes a thing. But yeah my ideas are super utopian and I doubt it will become a reality but I think first we should focus on things like disabilities and disorders. Like a cure for those various things I think are super possible its just that some people would prefer if some things stayed permanent. To them I say, don't take the pills or whatever then. Its a choice through and through. Although I am aware that places like the middle east and the bible belt will misuse things like this against people's wills however I would argue that it is better to be forced to change yourself rather than be killed because of how you are because its completely reversible, if you truly want to return to your old self just go somewhere more liberal and take the reverse of the whatever fixer was forced on you and bam, back to your original feelings.

ME TOO!!!
"So probably yo fault"

I hate how some people get offended by the fact that homosexualism gets studied. Twist and turn it however you like, it's still a form of behaviour that doesn't make sense from a purely biological standpoint. This makes it interesting to study and learn more about
It does make sense. They explain this, and behavioral biologists have been doing so for decades. When you have family members who contribute but don't reproduce, you have more people generating resources for the family without consuming resources with additional children. This helps ensure the family genes are passed on. It's so simple, it can be explained in a RUclips comment.

Can you do a video on this but for gender dysphoria? I honestly think it'd be so much easier to get rid of dysphoria and live as your birth sex than to transition.
Zuko Sama Are you trans?
Al C Yes.
Zuko Sama So how do you treat your illness?
Yeet Yeet Currently the only way to ease dysphoria is to transition.
Zuko Sama People would also feel less of a need to transition if society didn't expect everyone to fit into binary gender norms according to their appearance. Maybe some trans people would still want to transition physically, but it would be nice if people could just be themselves regardless of outward appearance.
Gentic modification scares me. I feel it takes away the nature of humans. Making a child that fits what you want isnt going to help the world.
It makes us better, but without accidents the accidental inventions wouldn't happen.
You'd be right....and wrong.....

I think Mitch and Greg as well as my other favorite RUclipsrs like Thomas Sanders, Connor Franta, and Doodie have served as a great inspiration to me. Knowing that some of my favorite RUclipsrs are also a part of the LGBT+ community is something I can't thank them enough for. And these types of videos that Mitch and Greg make are seriously so helpful. Thank you!! 😊❤️💛💚💙💜

I think the only exception to modifying embryos is when curing genetic disorders, but picking the traits of a person just seems wrong

YOU CAN'T JUST "TURN IT OFF!"
Believe me. I've tried. My life would be easier if it were that way. I accept myself NOW, and I'm a proud lesbian!
I’m bisexual and I’m curious in the science behind why I’m bisexual. I know that there are people that will misuse information though so we also have to be careful.

same here i wonder the same thing
Greg is a teacher!?!?! Where the hell were you when I was still in school? I'd love to have had a teacher like you. Lol. Keep up with the videos guys.
2:04 "aversion therapy" lol I think it's called conversion therapy, but great video and very insightful
I've seen prenatal nicotine is the cause for homosexuality on women while prenatal stress is the cause for homosexuality on men. I did my research

I don't think that normal life without having to hide your sexuality is possible here :( I think you are doing a geat job talking about these topics, making people more aware, maybe even more open minded. I hope one day we will all have the same rights and noone will tell people who they can marry. Parent could make their children however they want, without the kids consent, because well they wouldn’t be born yet, but still.
wtf?
@@Fiery_SpiritBecause the child IS LITERALLY DECIDING THAT? It would be the kids will, unlike having its genes changed before birth.
Homosexuality in the long term, can prevent overpopulation when you think about it
By the way guys if homosexuality disappeared yaoi and yuri would don't exist.....

If homosexuality is not a choice, then why are there former homosexuals.
you talking about Bisexual people. Hell they could be Pan, Omni or something else too

The *really* interesting question is "Can You Get Rid of Paedophilia?"
Noo
Destinee due to breakthroughs in crispr, you probably will be able to.

There are more men actually making a career with science because it's just generally more appealing to them. GENERALLY men and boys like mechanical things while women and girls like emotional.
StormyDmaster there is no races bro
