      @@tatumergo3931 every kind of weapon simulator has some kind of trade off or compromise to another. Doing the same kind of sparring with hard spear heads will lead to less intend by both sparring partners. Also a rounded tip will slide of the shield and introduce other artefacts. Using a sharp point will even more so restrict the practice of many techniques, since we want to keep our training partner and not kill them. A more ridgit nylon head could be a nice option, but I actually think that the friction of the rubber heads on the shields are closer to the 'binding of a sharp tip on a metal shield' than a nylon or blunt tipp sliding of.
      Manipulation of the shield is also less easy than with center gripped shields and should not be over evaluated. Training to circumvent the shield maybe is more effective, than binding it with a one handed spear, since the Spear will be probatly always in its weak while the shield is more or less mostly strong.

      @@tatumergo3931 maybe, but introducing more rigidity makes it less sparring safe, if you get thrust to the face all the energy is absorbed by your neck. We also have foam tipped spears, they basically don't slip of an surface but if the intensity is high enough, the impact becomes very unpleasant, the rubber tip flexes away under the same conditions.
      I guess the solution is not an perfect single option for a spear simulator, but choosing the different version based on your sparring mode/intensity and your training goals.
      Extrem example would be using a sharp, you can do it very slow motion, just to feel the difference once. And if you know a certain techniques just works because of the specifiations of your simulator just don't over empathize them ( example would be a very flexible sword, you hit with the flat and despite the parry, the point flexes to the mask of your partner - if you want to use the sword the "right/true" way, don't use this technique which only works with a soft feder)
      Back to your question, maybe the kvetun partisan head with a rubber tip?

    I am recreating spear techniques for ancient hoplite spear and aspis and draw heavily on Marozzo and Manciolino as analogy. Your videos are so wonderfully clear, and more importantly for me, show why overhand spear was so effective, that I have used them to good effect in explaining spear use. Thank you guys.

    • @PMBardunias
      @PMBardunias 3 года назад

      Have you thought about using larger rotella? Some round, double-grip shields shown on artwork from Marozzo's time are almost as big as the Greek aspis shields we use. With our shields you give up the ability to move to a two-handed grip, but you gain much in the way of defense. My standard attacks are the alternating low-high, from knee and the small bit of thigh that is exposed when the shield is raised, to the face, neck, and right shoulder. Punta reverso becomes much more important, as does footwork to move off line to attack.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 года назад +1

      @@PMBardunias we have 2 'scrapyard' Rotella that are a bit bigger, not as big as an aspis though. I agree, going two-handed with a really big shield isn't feasible anymore and probably makes going overhand even better since you really need these attacking angles to hit anything.

    Great work! I really never realized that moving between two and one handed grip would be so "easy" with a shield. Is that something specific to the rotella or do you think an earlier triangular shield and spear could perform similarly?

    • @stephan-schildwachepotsdam1171
      @stephan-schildwachepotsdam1171 3 года назад +3

      It depends on the grip on the shield, if its a center grip, it still works with a buckler, but if the shield gets bigger straps are better to keep the shield at the arm but still controll the spear with the same hand. It should work with a triangular shield as well =)

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 года назад +3

      Thank you! :) It's definitely harder, the longer your shield is. So with a 'Kiteshield' I would only use the knuckles down variant (where your left thumb points toward the spearhead) or let my hand protrude beyond the shield. 'Heatershields' actually handle just like a Rotella.^^ And like Stephan said, even with center gripped shields it is still doable, just not that comfortable.

    Very elegant vide :)
    Based on ''two handed spear'' vs ''spear and shield'' ( both spears similar lenght and same heads as in your video), i found ( for the unskilled) that the 'two handed spear'' to have a really large advantage in control, quickly repeated fakes /attacks etc. Have you played out that option with benefit of medieval manuals ?
    Just saw your video "'How did they really fight with Spear and Shield?"' - thank you

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  3 года назад +1

      Yup, in the duel the two handed version is really great. It's just a bit harder to throw the spear and the shield becomes more passive - like an added weight to your arm. ^^ This is probably why Marozzo advises to drop the shield in that case. In a skirmish, it would be a different situation. ☺️

    Double sided spears allow for both under and over hand grips with an easy way to switch.

  • @Thuggle_Bus
    @Thuggle_Bus 2 года назад +1

    Underhand is far superior for basic anatomic reasons. Also you can rotate your forearm up and mimic the overhand grip.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  2 года назад +4

      Then again Overhand dominates the historical sources we have, so there seems to be more to it 😉

    • @TheChiconspiracy

      Mimic it in an awkward and terrible way... Also underhand grip loses a huge amount of power, parrying, and recovery ability.
