The Second Assault by Achille Marozzo - Introduction
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.4 месяца назад
Hi all, with this series I hope to address a few of your requests. First, the second Assalto of Achille Marozzo is quite a bit more complicated - so a detailed "how to" was in order anyway. Additionally it focuses on transitioning from wide into narrow play, which is an awesome area to work on. So in the upcoming months I'll film whenever I find the time. Be patient however, since I am finishin...

Pietro Monte gives us a glimpse into the early development of two-handed sword fighting, in his Collectanea, written in the early 1490’s. As a Renaissance general and master of arms, he taught fighting skills to nobles and men-at-arms in the court of the Sforza’s in Milan, and is referenced as an authority by both Castiglione and Leonardo da Vinci. What is particularly interesting, is he lays o...

Here is your dose of fencing theory musings for the weekend: Ridolfo Capo Ferro explains his tempo theory by distinguishing between movement and stillness. You can read the instructions. Does that mean you can do it? Of course not. You must do it. Sparring can only gain so much before poor habits develop from the Game that is sparring. Can you actually fight? Do you know the real feeling of fighting? How can you gain that feeling? Have you ever faced a real blade in real life? It is not like sparring. I mean no insult, I’m sure you are skilled. But we all need to consider these questions

Btw, I have not hated the word "capacity" more than I do now... it hits to close for comfort. 😅 But seriously, I'll check the dimensions carefully, no point to have a jacket that inhibits your arm movement in sidesword (or any other HEMA weapons).

    Lovely video, as always. 👍 Have you ever done cutting practice? And if yes, did you found yourself being held back by your conditioning to stop the cut before hitting your partner (target)? If you haven't done cutting with sharps, I'm still curious on your take on this. I just want to know how compatible cutting with sharps and training with people are from the perspective of conditioning the cut.

    • @kaoskronostyche9939
      @kaoskronostyche9939 2 месяца назад

      What a great question. I used to be into martial arts and read a lot about them. Not only did I read a few stories about how Black Belts lost fights because they had trained so long and hard to NOT hit people. I even met one upper belt who told me he couldn't overcome that conditioning in the one street fight he had and had to run after suffering a bit of a beating. In other words, are HEMA practicing to not make full strikes. Not that it matters - no one is going to have a sword street fight but still a good inquiry to make. I never thought to connect not striking to HEMA practice so I am glad you have. As I said, great question. Cheers!

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam 2 месяца назад

      So yes, I have done cutting with sharps and no, the conditioning only applies to people in my head. So cutting at non-living things was easy :) Funny story: In 2008 I started sword fighting with reenactment. Open face helmets did not allow for strikes and especially thrusts towards that area. When I started with historical fencing, it was really hard to overcome this resistance in my brain to do this to people (with fencing masks). Thus, your point is valid about conditioning, but the activities of fencing with people and cutting at objects are too different... at least for my brain.^^

      @@SchildwachePotsdam Wow! I was not expecting this. And you opened an even bigger can of worms. I was thinking muscle memory, but you are 100% right, physiological factors matter as well. So here's what I think: in my case, muscle memory is a huge factor because I am too green, I am still trying to get the pacing right, I am focusing on drills and small changes throw me off. In your case, because you have so much control (I'm not saying it to be nice; it's obvious from your videos), that is not a concern (i.e. you've learned to switch the conditioning on and off; or probably switch between them) and physiological factors can emerge (and you're right, a tatami mat is just some rolled up "grass"). I'll think more about this in the future.

      @@kaoskronostyche9939 I switched sideswords recently, from one with a 24cm S-shaped quillons to another one with a 25cm S-shaped quillons. My arm is bruised from trying to do powerful tramazzoni (I want to be able to do tatami cuts from the wrist, so I pushed myself to put power in the wrist motion). I thought I was just getting rusty. Nope, I switched back to the 24cm one and everything was golden. Just 1cm more was enough to mess with my wrist cuts. I am now switching between three trainers to get my brained used to the idea of variety and teach him to be more flexible. I find this fascinating, which is why I agree that conditioning yourself to work with a partner is not a bad advice, not bad at all.

    I noticed in Zulu stick fighting, a vertical stick protrudes substantialy above and below the small hide shield and guards agaist high and low cuts over and under the shield--without the impaired visibility of a larger shield. The fighting stick is a light fast club used like a cutting sword. It would be interesting to see if the addition of a vertical stick to a buckler would be an advantage!

    I'm definitely a fan of your perspective on using the "wrapping strike" as I know it to circumvent the static defense of the first ward. I had been under the impression that if the Scholar (shown attacking on that page) begins from the Half-Shield counterward as shown, the options to pass the Priest's static defense are fairly limited to thrusts, feinting into a cut with the false edge of the blade, or perhaps the Sturzhau. Having done some reenacting with the sword and shield, I'm aware of the wrapping strike's ability to slip past a static guard as it accomplishes this exceedingly well. I would venture a guess and suggest that considering the previous image, the priest, as a response to the Scholar's on-side strike, turns his buckler to parry to the outside. I suspect this is accomplished by the scholar feinting an oberhau that he turns into an unterhau but I suspect that my own theory would require some testing with a sparring partner to see if it can actually be done.
