  • Hi all,
with this series I hope to address a few of your requests. First, the second Assalto of Achille Marozzo is quite a bit more complicated - so a detailed "how to" was in order anyway. Additionally it focuses on transitioning from wide into narrow play, which is an awesome area to work on.
So in the upcoming months I'll film whenever I find the time. Be patient however, since I am finishing up my Dissertation to get my PhD at the same time - so it's quite a bit of stuff on my plate at the moment.
Anyway, enjoy and thank you for you support! It really means a lot. :)
In historical fencing or HEMA (for Historical European Martial Arts) we reconstruct sword fighting systems from historical sources. Our club focuses on Italian medieval and renaissance sources, fencing with the Spadone (Two-Handed Sword), Spear, Sidesword (One-Handed Sword) together with Shield, Cape, Dagger, you name it!

Hi all, I am not dead (yet 🙈), just very busy finishing my PhD. Anyway, I started this new series, so might as well share it. Enjoy Marozzo's 2nd Assalto with the longsword. I didn't plan initially to go into Bolognese longsword, and I only wanted to stick with learning sidesword. But there are many more schools that do longsword than sidesword, so I decided to give longsword a go. What strikes me as interesting is that some guards that I learned in sidesword, guards that I don't prefer to use (I'll blame it on inexperience), feel much more natural when used in longsword.

What are you doing? Didn't you read between the lines, we would get more videos if he drops out. 😏
I kid, I kid... as long as you're aware that at your defence you'll be the person that knows the best about your work, you'll be fine. 👍

    nice video as always,
I have a small question, usually in Italian fencing we don't use the thumb above the crossguard, that's more a thing of German longsword for some of their guards, so why are you using it like that?

Because Marozzo very clearly depicts it in quite a few of his guards. That's not to say, he did it exclusively, but it has its uses :)

mmmh ... giocco is wrong in modern Italian and Marozzo renaissance bolognese, also it sounds strange when you pronunce it. Gioco = play

yeah, now that you mention it, I don't really know were the second 'c' comes from as we find 'gioco' and 'giocho' in the source. But what's your point? Just the typo?
