[SPOILERS] JOKER Director Q&A | TIFF 2019

- Shocking in its originality and intensity, Joker is a game changer for so-called comic book movies. Showcasing a fully immersed performance from Joaquin Phoenix and a new vision of world building, Todd Phillips' latest is an unsettling, exciting portrait of the villain we thought we knew.
Phillips and Scott Silver's original screenplay isn't an adaptation of any previous part of the DC Comics canon, though its reference points will reward fans. The setting is 1981 Gotham City, inspired by New York of the same era, so mythologized on film for its colour, crime, and corruption.
Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) ekes out a living as a clown, performing for tourists and children as he dreams of fame as a stand-up comedian like his hero, talk show host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro). But people never do what Arthur wants them to do, his inner torment eats at him, and his ailing mother keeps harping on everything she is owed by her former employers, the Wayne family. Life is so ugly that you just have to laugh.
As Arthur descends into the unhinged killer he must become, Phoenix keeps us on edge as he reveals the soul of a man in crisis. A tentative romance with his neighbour Sophie (Zazie Beetz, also at the Festival in Lucy in the Sky and Seberg) grows more dangerous with each encounter.
Part of the pleasure of watching Joker stems from its technical brilliance. Its production design and cinematography capture the supersaturated grit of a rotting Gotham. Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver course quite recognizably through the film's veins. And Hildur Guðnadóttir's score contributes to the feverish effect. This movie is proof that even the most familiar can begin anew. Кино
Everyone talks about it being a slow movie. No it wasn’t. People have just been so programmed that movies have a climax every 10-15 minutes. If it was an “action packed” film, the ending wouldn’t have held such a strong effect.
Exactly! One of the things I loved about the movie is that it doesn't rush anything, they really take the time to develop his character.
I would have enjoyed another hour. Nothing slow to me. Everything was interesting. The acting was so engrossing. Everyone who worked on this movie brought their absolute A game. Can’t wait to see it again.
It wasn't slow for me.
It's very well connected, scene after scene.
Agree, It wasn't slow for me. it was perfectly made from start to finish.
absolutely a masterpiece. I LOVED that idea DC Black bring more movies like Joker.
Anthony Salerno I can respect that. For me, the music in the background, the dirtiness of the scenes, and the empty space that was allowed to persist spoke more than any dialogue could have. It’s like in music, people try to fill every moment with vocals and each instrument. Then you have Tool who will have a 60 second opening to a 14 minutes song that is nothing but the sound of water or an undulating synth. What isn’t said can be more powerful than what is said. That spacial development makes the climax so much stronger.
If Joker had been a fast paced cgi money grab like most marvel movies, the scene where he is on the talk show would not have been as powerful. Everyone in the theater, including myself, jumped when he shot DeNiro. When Joker did his knock-knock joke, some people made noises in preparation, but then he doesn’t shoot himself. As Joker is asking what you get when you cross a mentally ill person, you could hear people becoming uncomfortable as if they were watching something live irl. Also, the DeNiro character is the only “innocent” person he kills. The 3 in the train were about to rape some woman then started beating him. The clown gave him a gun that he didn’t want, lies about Joker trying to buy it from him, and he loses his job. His mother lied to him and beat him as a child. DeNiro made a joke about him, but still invited him into the show, which is one thing he desired the entire movie. That lack of “noise” from filling every moment with motion or action makes that kill so fucking powerful.
I have never felt the way i felt today walking out of a theater. I was sad, angry, depressed, confused. An amazing movie that everyone should see in their lifetime.
Indeed
Yeah I don't understand why some people disliked it. People dislike it cause it's a ''dangerous movie'' and others dislike it cause it is nothing like Joker in the comics and they think too much on Batman a lot.
Dude, how could you forget infinity war?
Feels bad to have a movie be so spot on. Not even glamorous, just painful.
It was a good movie.
That's my daily basis on how I feel
Hats off to the host for repeating the question for us to hear.
That's actually really helpful this video would suck without him lol.
give that man a raiseee
Great host all along
Yeah wtf mic the question people
Todd might have started DC down the path that'll save their cinematic universe. The whole 'label' idea is brilliant. Forget about the Justice League films and all that other nonsense, let's go the character study route, it fits DC so much better than those over the top action movies.
Because DC execs just wanted to jump on the Marvel train and earn some quick bucks.
Big studios don't care about fresh ideas, artistic perspective, novelties. They just wanna earn money. They're more willing to produce derivative movies, because it's safer. There's a formula for everything, right?
That's why DC movies sucked so bad for past few years. There was no idea behind them. They were just cash grabs.
Everytime a DC movie comes out yall say "this will save the universe" why so?, i dont think DC movies need any saving, WW, MOS, BVS, aquaman, shazam were all great movies.
I still hope DC pursues the shared universe and goes for action packed movies, not everything has to do with Batman or his universe, I want to see the other characters get some praise.
Todd seems like such an honest and authentic guy. Can't wait to see more from him
Nathan Sanders MCU is for babies
@@tobiaswhale9552 Yes! I earned another nickel today!
Yeah hopefully his carrer goes into full speed after Joker.
indeed
Tobias Whale Wow you seem like a really toxic person
"Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson...*thinks about saying Jared Leto then doesn't..."
im dead 😂😂
But actually there's an interview somewhere in RUclips and he already mentioned those names including jared leto and said they did an amazing job
@@moayad80 Leto didn't. But you kiss ass in the biz to stay in the biz
@DocDoomClassic 52 Yup he is so talented actor loved it too.
Jordan Brown I agree. I mean Jared Leto is a very talented actor, but I don’t think the part of Joker really suited him y’know.
@@rambocortez
It very much suited him. The writing and directing on David Ayer's part, as well as the editing is why Jared Leto's joker was bad, not Leto
Todd : There's a lot of ways to interpret the movie, and I hate as the director to define it for people.
This is actually a major school of philosophy within the literary world known as "death of the author". It's the view that the author of a work should be viewed not as the creator or God of this world, but rather a chronicler or scribe. Authorial intent should not be seen as essential for interpreting a work. Instead, the work should be interpreted based on what's actually in the text, or in the case of a film, what's actually on the screen.
Petition for a DC Black! Absolutely. With Todd as a director.
Scarecrow and a horror movie based on the origin of Asylum Arkham would be a good fit for this DC Black label thing.
José Alves fuck yes GIVE ME THIS
I think if the right director is chosen this would be the best movie in the black label universe
Yes, that would be a great fit and I'd love to see Cillian Murphy play that role again. I think he could pull off a deep role. Peaky Blinders is not a showcase for that, but I thought he was great in Sunshine and even 28 Days Later. And Danny Boyle would be a good fit as director for the DC Black Label series.
great idea. imagine a scarecrow origin film with cillian murphy
How about Todd directing roschach movie
I was lucky to attend this screening. I would suggest people research mental health and violence before they review inaccurate shit about the social commentary this film brings. I'm not a fan of the Oscars but hope this movie gets its share of attention in that regard.
Otto Drone Very well said.
Ironic you say that, because the Oscars are no longer about art. People are still putting on a character and bullshit their way through the show. At the end of the day it's a wankfest.
Well, that's all folks.
That's basically our society now. You can't even get a freaking job if you don't put on a character.
Omg yes. My heart was broken throughout the film even when he killed his “mother” I cried cause I understood his reasonings. Honestly I related so much to that film and it breaks me knowing there are other arthur flecks in the world and people misunderstand and hate on them like joker❤️
I wouldn't say I was 'rooting' for the character the whole time, more like praying for him. A really brilliant comi-tragedy and work of art that people will be interpreting and re interpreting for years to come.
pax north how could you not root for him at certain points?
Spoiler:
His own mother- abused him! He was treated so horribly by general public because of his disability. Not given the care and concern he deserved by social
Worker and proper healthcare! It was heartbreaking!
@@FreeJennJenn Right. No of course, totally heartbreaking. I laughed and cried. But... I can't condone murder, hence why I said I was not rooting for him 'the whole time' (especially after his aims became given over to evil), although I was praying for him the whole time.
I dont get the “slow burn” talk. It was amazing start to finish, not one dull moment.
Easy to overlook, but the host is outstanding.
I could totally see Batman taking a cigarette away from Joker and telling him “smoking kills”. 😂
I think they’ll definitely play with things like smoking, the socks and shoes in The Batman. Hinting at his menace in shadows maybe.
batman as bruce wayne was smoking in his first appearnce in the comics
I'd like to see Penguin done in this way with a Godfather vibe. Also a Riddler movie with inspiration taken from Seven, Saw, and Zodiac.
I'd like to see a gangster movie on the Falcone crime family.
Aaron Easton that would be amazing now I want those movies now lol
@@mosdef5146 Robert Dinero should play a mobster in the Penguin movie. He can maybe start being the Stan Lee of DC Black Label. I already have the opening scene and first 30 mins of the movie in my head that involves the death of Penguin's mother. Nothing like the Gotham series.
And a mr freeze movie that is a romantic tragedy.
@@ManlyPelican that would work. Start out with her healthy in a happy relationship with Victor, maybe newly weds until they discover she is ill, then focus most of the movie on her condition slowly deteriorating while he frantically works on a cure and develops a freeze cannon in the process. Eventually she tries to persuade him to let her go. I'd end the movie with him being exposed to the chemicals in a cryogenic chamber and show he survived it in critical condition.
Is it weird that I literally got excited looking at the tiny glimpses of the credits
No ur a true film fan/geek for caring about the credits and who's behind the scenes. I'm the same way I'm glad I wasn't the only one interested lol.
Who would have thought the guy who directed Hangover would give you one of the best comic book movies of the past couple years
«Many great actors have played versions of this character: Heath ledger, Jack Nicholson and... Um... so on» Hahhaaha i laughed out loud
@Grey Alien and that's pretty much it
Todd Philip's Joker is a masterpiece 😃
Im extremely fascinated by this movie and this man i cant stop watching interviews!!
The only movie to make me feel sad and scared at the same time.
The host is amazing, great work, great personality, great knowledge of film.
3:20 is when Todd comes out
Thank you.
Thank youuu
Come out from the closet?
Thanks
Go rainy mile Sila
Mark Hamill always gets overlooked for a mention at these things when they refer to previous Joker performances. I get that he was never a live action Joker (and maybe that’s why they don’t), but the guy has been giving the voice role his all for like two decades, and totally set the standard for Joker’s voice and laugh.
93 Million opening weekend...
Next Month DC/Warner Bro’s presents DC Black lol

best film of the year, truly beautiful.
Joker comedy is a real drama and the comedy film maker made one of the best drama film , pure irony of faith
Todd seems like such a sweet dude
I have never rooted more for a character, from start to finish.
I’ve went three times now. I’m addicted
"shut up and take my money" mood
I am thinking about watching it for the 4th time :)
reza panda I’m going sunday for the fourth time lmao
me too!
Never in my life have I seen a movie in theaters more thane once, this one makes me want to see it again, and I will
dc black ,yeah warner should make that happen
j mula
It would obviously be called the DC "Black Label"
There is an actual dc black label going on in the comics that had the same goal of telling darker stories
I see DC Black, as a live action movie label, to be the dark multiverse that Laughing Batman is from. For that reason, Bruce should've died in that alley too.
@@iRazenrak that's the Dark Multiverse, its completely separate from the Black Label and too far fetched for live action
Spoiler Talks are there...! Avoid watching for complete spoiler free experience!
I can't take it hahah. That talk show scene was amazing
@@CinematicDependency can you spoil that for me? Lol I like spoilers and I've been wondering if that goes down the way that I think it will ever since I seen the trailer

@@justaguy3825 thanks man but can you put a spoiler warning on it just in case there's people wanting to c joker on my channel?
Joker was a great film.
I like Todd ....such an interesting guy to talk with....
Totally agree been watching his interviews and he's genuinely excited to be here but also very laid back and easy to ask questions. I would need 10 min to an hour to be a fan before talking to him too.
"Whether they do it or not." - They'll do it lol, they'll do it.
They kinda have to now. Can't resist the money.
Was I not supposed to root for Arthur the entire time?
4:56 The Camerman Checks To See If Joaquin Is There 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Joker is a masterpiece. If it doesn't win a bunch of Oscars, nobody should.
Especially Joaquin Phoenix. I've never seen anything like his playing Arthur Fleck before. I'm hopelessly drawn into it.
Gotta love Todd Phillips too, such a charming guy.
But I still don't want to watch his earlier movies...I mean Borat, really?
Wow, just wow, what an arc of a career 😳
I would love to see a new take on batman with this genre of cinema! Make batman more vulnerable, more mentally ill and see his actions in a different way. Make him a really questionable hero. I mean, he already are, but push the idea further.
todds laughing at 10:47 hahahahahahhaha love it
This movie is about society, politics, the ongoing war we have with people who committ certain types of crimes... ANY young adut (16+) NOT should, but NEEDS to see this movie.... The message, the symbolic nature, and the themes it pulls are so pure and raw.... it's eerie. Oh yeah and you get to see a biopic of the Joker and how he got to become.... MASTERPIECE. Safe to say it has a definitive lock in on the "Best Actor In A Leading Role" category as well as "Best Picture". Those are the two, 100% nominations this pheneomenal cinematic educator and adventure have.... would not be surprised to see it grab the "Big 5" and more.
Otto Bergmann (Helenelundsskolan) they are the most prestigious cinematic award show in my and very many other people’s opinion. But to each their own.
DylanNicolasSG yeah it’s pretty violent for people that age.
I see Willem Dafoe/Robert Pattinson in "The Lighthouse", Adam Sandler in "Uncut Gems" or Christian Bale/Matt Damon for "Ford vs Ferrari" probably getting this award over Joaquin.
@@tiki1750 nah
I think Todd Philips is such a cool guy.
Wish one of the people asking the questions just started laughing for 5 minutes before asking the question.
😂🤣
7:25 Damn, didn't even mention Jared Leto. That's when you know you did a terrible job.
😏
That part was fuckin' funny man I'm sorry
You mean 7:22
He did what he was told,he did what he thought 💭 was best, He was fine, now this movie 🎥 was from another universe!
Jared Leto's Joker was off lable
The only other time i felt this way after leaving a theatre is when I witnessed the film RIDESHARE (now on Amazon Prime). Truly brilliant filmmaking.
I'm falling in love with his funny laugh. He seems so authentic and nice. And so high! ahahahaha
11:23 Heath was the passenger in his version too! Even if it was a coincidence, it was still a great connection between both Jokers.
Some pretty good questions. I can really appreciate that, I’m sure Todd did too.
The movie is truly amazing
I love Scarface it is my favourite of all time
That's one badass profile pic you got there.
18.29 "you're the tunnel at the end of the light" :D
DC Black gives me the chills. the best idea ever.
love how he said " many great actors have played versions of this character, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and so on"... Poor Leto...😂
Next DC Black Film should be Adam Strange, character study in the visual vein of High Life or 2001
Mr Freeze or Riddler or Scarcrow
Cant wait to see the movie!!
Is it bad that I never stopped rooting for him?
Jagraj Wasan yes
No. Everything about how society and his own mother failed him- is heartbreaking!
No.There is no right way of interpreting art.I was with Walter White till the end.
I was behind the joker all the way till the end. Am I bad ?
I don’t know man, he executes one of those guys who assaulted him on the train. The first two guys could be justified as self defense but not the third. Smothered his mother...I know she contributed to his suffering but come on. Murdering his former co-worker? I know he was a dick and ratted him out about the gun and lied and shit, but come on....not justifiable homicide there.
DC BLACK
..... next character
RIDDLER
PENGUIN
2 FACE
love this idea !
and probably Scarecrow, play by Robert Englund
I would definitely watch Harvey Dent slowly become mad for 2hrs
Imagine that! Set up the world, set up GOTHAM and its villains and the last movie:
BATMAN
YESS
At 18:45 the auto-generated subtitle writes 'Todd Phillips' as 'hard bollocks' and boy, has this man got some hard bollocks! Brilliant movie.
With his character study in Joker Phillips is putting back the detective into (D)etective (C)omics.
Let's hope this is just the beginning of a deep dive into our beloved DC characters.
Hope patinson plays an awesome batman. Then we could have something special in the future 😬
wow 12:50 so there really might be more movies 🙌🏾
Nobody is talking about the fact that Todd pitched a DC Black label to WB and they basically said if the Joker is a success we'll see if it happens. And since the movie was a huge success, that means there is a big chance we will see a DC elseworlds universe or something like that. pretty cool
what a talent.
7:25 Damn what a burn.
I just watched Suicide Squad again, And So On wasn't that great as Joker.
you people crack me up with jared. lol
I feel bad for leto at this point lol.
Yeah it is a slow burn. Whew. It's worth waiting for the 2nd hr. 😊
Holy moly I never thought of that theory, that he'd be having a whole dream sequence. 🤔
Putting in my DC Black request now
Bane
Superboy prime
Lucifer Morningstar
Static shock
Owlman
The Question
Apache chief
Naasir Ali, I’ve been wanting a bane solo project for so long such a great villain😂and static shock is a great pick
A court of owls film would be an interesting ass film
I think Two Face would be an amazing film.
DC Black! Do it! C'mon, do it!
He looks like Dr House
This is why I love this film I'm tired of all the action light hearted superhero films and this whole universe bullshiteeee the best films were by themselves, the original spiderman by raimi, the dark knight trilogy the best DC films, the joker adds a more realistic tone and a different take on his origin and I kinda hope the new batman goes off of this film then the relationship with arthur and bruce will be so much better
What a fuckin ride
Beginning to the End
The Audience at the Cinema all Cheered and Clapped
heath ledger, jack nicholson and uh... and so on.
how about interpreting that Todd Philipps did not direct the movie?

I can’t wait!!!!!🤡 so far no rules and this , version of joker 🃏 I can already tell it’s gonna make me smile 😊 and for the DC Black needs to happen ASAP first ,joker , black Adam , maybe even a new Catwoman
Catwoman really.

Catwoman is lame.
Omg this is art. MOVIES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE UP FOR INTERPRETATION I like marvel movies as much as the next guy but this is a fucking film.
You root for him until you don't, this reminds me of Nightcrawler
Will watch this video on 4th Oct. after my show... Good bye👋
"Heith Ledger, Jack Nicolson and...eh...so on..."
Yeah. We`re trying to erase THAT Joker from history and memory aswell.
Trying realy hard
why not asking Jake Gyllenhal ? In nightcrawler he slimmed down ALSO incredibly...and ALSO his eyes could change from nice, to angry in a split second.
If Joaquin had refused to lose 50 pounds (?), wouldnt Gyllenhaal be an excellent substitute ?
How bout him for Scarecrow? Or Cillian Murphy
Spoiler, but why didn't anyone ask him if Bruce Wayne's father was lying about Joker's relevation? We're the records fake?
Think that was clearly supposed to be true. I highly doubt that those records were fake at all. Then again, given the ending, I think that everything in the film is up for interpretation. This is probably the first comic book movie I have seen that truly invokes that style of ambiguous storytelling and I loved it.
It really makes you wonder right? On one hand, Penny could be telling the truth and could have gone insane after a traumatic experience with Wayne denying ever fathering Arthur. On the other hand, Thomas could be telling the truth, and Penny could be delusional and have adopted Arthur. The second scenario seems like a setup, but Arthur shows that he’s delusional as well, which can be a hereditary illness. Personally, I’m completely torn. I have no clue, because both make sense. I’d like to believe Penny was telling the truth, because it would connect Batman and Joker on such a deeper level than we even acknowledge. It would further justify their odd fascination for each other
@@zxt350 I think that Joker and Batman being brothers would be too much. They can be connected, but I prefer it when it is more subtle. The furthest I think any media has gone in connecting these two is by having Joker be the killer of his parents in Batman 1989. But I did find Penny to be one of the most interesting and sympathetic characters, even though we didn't see much of her in the present. I think that Arthur's moral line between good and bad went fully into bad when he killed her for no good reason.
@@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 question how long does arthur wear the joker makeup?
@@Pyro725 It's mainly in the last act. For probably 25 minutes.
WB won't make a black edition now because he thought of it first and now he can put rights on it to his advantage of a share holder........so much more to everything when you can see behind the door
Many actors have played the role of Joker,Heath Ledger,Jack Nicholson and so on....
Thank god he didn't refer to Jared Leto
❤️
When he came on I thought he was a little high
Riddler next
This movie should not have a sequel. About Batman in this universe? Sure, why not. But not Joker, at least not this one. Since this video has spoilers anyway, I can openly tell why I think so: film is great (one of the reasons) is that we practically don't know, there is hallucination and there is reality. We 100 percent sure that relationships with his neighbour was just an illusion. Just like his first appearance in Muray's show. But everything else? Whole film, except then we see him as a pacient, may be an illusion. And you can find very short indication of that in a film's begining (not first scene, though), not only in end. So sequel about Joker may destoy this mystery of mark there reality ends and hallucinations starts.
Annnnd... He could Just be telling a story to us the whole film. I heard somewhere about that.
Lots of ifs
I agree with you
Agreed, no sequel, better yet, no more lame comic book movies, way too many now, Hollywood needs to make more movies for adults but unfortunately it's probably the dumbass kids who make up most of the real $$ numbers
3:19
Dc needs to let todd do the label thing. Way better than justice league
Chantal akerman
Strange that most of the critics from this film festival gave the film a bad review
they are Disney shills and ate on a disney payroll....Plus they are SJW and support femenism.
Cause it just wasn't that good
Leonard Halbert Then they're disingenuous because they all appear to like the film and by the reaction they gave Todd
With the success of Joker, I wish we'll get more thought-provoking comic-book-based movies that focus on character study.
I'm bored with all those formulaic action flicks and CGI-heavy superheroes movies. Marvel is kinda hopeless, so maybe with 1 Billion USD worldwide gross from Joker DC would make another art films like this.
13:37 "And they rightfuly said calm donw you are not starting a label". Yeah because DC have done SOOOO well with their shitty justice league movies!!!!!!!!!
13:11 This could literally be what saves DC from the garbage fire that is their cinematic universe man. This whole black label thing is fucking genius, and would set DC apart from Marvel in such a unique way. I really hope those morons up top reconsider this idea
