Thanks for the great video Joy. My children grew up in a frugal home. They are now 30, 28 and 26. They laugh a lot about the way in which their father and I used to try and save money and make them aware of the plight of others around the world. I am proud to say that they are all now well adjusted adults with wonderful compassion for others. I completely believe that their frugal and thoughtful upbringing is the reason why.

Ohh my gosh. You made me cry. Your kids are so blessed to have parents like you and your husband. Hearing about the neighbor kids not having food made me cry. Your kids are blessed. They dont need luxury to be happy. Im glad you are able to help out the kids in needs. God keep blessing you.

I am an atheist and I subscribed to your channel because you are extremely wise. Your children are not deprived. Your children have seen the world and most importantly, they know that they are loved. That's all children need and really want. You and your husband are awesome parents. There are plenty of children out there who have the latest gadgets and go on extravagant vacations twice a year but they walk around like empty shells due to the lack of of love and attention from their parents and their unstable home life. Your children are rich! They have two loving parents living with them under the same roof! Your children have seen how 3/4 of the world's population actually live. I was born and raised in Vietnam until I was 7 years old and I have seen the poorest of the poor. This experience has shaped my life for the better. I think those who are well off in wealthier countries like America, Canada, the UK and etc have lost touch with reality. They are living in an overindulgence world. Your children don't need to go out for dinner! They don't need dessert after every meal. They don't need a basement full of toys. They need love. That's all. Joy, your children are rich! I just want to give you my perspective of a non God-fearing working mom of 3 kids 5 and under.

I needed to hear this today!!! Thank you soooo much for sharing!❤ Sometimes I feel guilty (and a little jealous) when I see my friends and neighbors buy expensive things or take their kids on expensive vacations, that we can't afford due to many issues that came our way! I always tell my husband and kids that we need to be grateful for what we have, that there are others doing worse than us...but it us hard, and kids don't always understand!😞...but, I know that God is in control...ALWAYS!🙏🙏🙏

I am really happy I found your channel, I grew up in Mexico in a small village and the simplest things bring the most happiness, I would play with mud making "cakes" with my cousins and those are memories that I will cherish forever. I am very grateful for what I have now and the place I am, sometimes because we live up to the expectations of others we forget what is important. Blessings!

God bless you!! This just brought me to tears. My grandfather was a janitor and a landscaper, my grandmother was a maid and I thought they were giants. My mother was a phone operator for Southern Bell (now AT&T) and my father was an electrician. I was always the kid that didn't give a lick about brand name clothes. I was a tomboy until I was 16. I was abused physically, emotionally, verbally and sexually. The only thing I wanted was love, stability and care.
We in the West have a corrupted view of life. You are an amazing woman doing exactly what God has called you to. Do we really think God is concerned about kids having "stuff" and going out to eat. lol No. The Father wants us to love each other. You are shining like a bright light of love in the darkness.
Watching your videos makes me feel like I have a missionary friend. It makes me see firsthand what a missionary's life is like and because of that I'm going to give what I can to your ministry. We give to the missionaries at our church but I'm still encouraged to do something for your ministry. Hearing about the $8 rent of your neighbors.... wow. I'm a SAHM mom and we budget like Dave Ramsey to survive but we paid more than that buying our 2 year old a Daniel Tiger action figure for Christmas. I'm sure you can use whatever we can send.

I live in the states with our 8 kiddos, 10 and under and sometimes get the question about them being deprived because they don’t have their own rooms, huge wardrobes, and every toy/device they could imagine. It actually breaks my heart that so many people think those things are essential for joyful living! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hi Joy, big hug for you. Don't mind what people said , you are great mother and your children absolutely not deprived. My child used to be spoiled princess ( she always got what her finger point to ) but since we start frugal living. Her personality change, she become more respect , grateful and responsible. We start to spend more family time together rather than before , so frugal life is amazing if you really want to have " real family".

I have to agree with the other commenters, your kids don't sound deprived at all. Several years ago we moved into a small (for American standards) older home. We explained that we wanted to be able to save money, pay off debt. One day one of our boys said something about us being poor. (We lived in a lower income neighborhood.) We had a heart to heart talk with each of them about how poverty was as much a mindset as a standard of living. We explained that we were making certain choices to live a certain way for a period of time so that we could make other choices with our income. In those four + years, our boys have been on a family mission trip to Arizona, the oldest has been to Seattle on 2 mission trips. They have been individually to Mexico (3 of them), The Gambia (2 of them), and Panama. This year two will go to Panama and Peru. These were all trips that they worked and raised money for and have been life-changing. We made the choice to live a certain way so that we could invest in things that had eternal significance. I will never regret those 4 + years in that small house. God reminded me continually that while we were cramped at times, we had a solid roof over our head, heat and air, and clean water. Those are things that we can take for granted so easily in the states. At the end of the time, God provided us with a wonderful home that we are able to use for different ministry opportunities. We have more space and that is now a sweet blessing that I wouldn't have appreciated that if I hadn't had the past 4 years.

We didn't eat out when I was a kid. We went through a season in my own home, where we didn't have much, financially. What our kids "lacked" in terms of activities, they gained in quality time together as a family. I have young adults now, and not having money to do all the activities and go to all the places and do all the things has not deprived them in the least. They are incredible young people: competent, compassionate, servant-hearted, mature, reliable. They're just fine.

Your videos are always such a wonderful reality check. You've helped me change.my perspective on possessions and living simply. I'm really making an effort to use up what I have before buying more. I'm currently working on turning a whole box of fabric I've hoarded away for years into new work dresses rather than just buying something totally new whilst that fabric just collect dust. You also inspire me to find ways I can help in my own community.

Such a good reminder. We're Church planters, and have a tight budget. I'll admit it's easy to feel like we aren't giving our kids enough experiences (eating out, music lessons, gymnastics, and fancy family vacations). Last week I was looking through pictures, and was reminded how truly blessed we are. It doesn't take money to make special memories. Praying your adoption goes smoothly! One of my two girls came through miracle of adoption, and I'm hoping/praying to adopt again!

I can't say enough Amens for this post. Great job. You communicated simple living so sweetly without judgement for those who don't feel the same conviction, but also full of encouragement who do feel Jesus calling them to a life of simplicity. Heading to Uganda in May. Can't wait to be back in my second home. My oldest 2 kiddos are coming with me again this year. We make them pay for their own trip so I was super excited when they both said, "Yeah, Mom, I'm going." They worked hard, saved much, said no, and because of this will be in tow with me when I come. Love and hugs.

Being frugal makes kids more appreciate. I just had an interesting experience where I helped cater a wedding. After, the cater was tired and threatened to throw away the leftovers if no one took them home from the kitchen staff. People took the big things but we're not taking things like mashed potatoes and couscous from a salad because their kids wouldn't eat it. I took those things. My kids were so appreciative. It was like Christmas. Being frugal undoes pickiness. We were grateful for the food

Glad you are back! We raised our kids simply so that we could send hubby back to uni to become a teacher and to send our kids to a Christiab school. It is interesting to me that they are all well and know how to make due and are content with their lot in life! I was brought up simply and my hubby remarks about how content I am with our life style! We have a nicer life than I did and have been able to give our kids things like piano lessons. Though they are all in their 20's now, we still have educational dollars that they can access and our married daughter has been very appreciative of the chance to better herself without it negativ
vely impacting their budget as they are just starting out! 2/3 thrift and do clothes swaps and get quite a kick out of it! It's perspective! You Go Joy! You 're on the right track! xo

*Joy I am so thankful for your channel, it continues to be a blessing to my life and speak wisdom and peace whenever I watch your videos! I was thinking of this recently, because I want to lead this life but I have thought that my husband or children might feel "deprived" if I live the mission life. But ultimately it's in God's hands and a life without some "first world" items will not make your kids hate their life, if anything it'll save health problems and heart problems down the road. Also, I grew up similarly to you and I love camping, I can't wait to take my kids camping and swimming and let them go longboarding and climb trees.*

It is so easy to get sidetracked and caught up in the need to have "stuff" but the "stuff" is really not what is important. Thank you so much!

Hi! joy, I just wanted to say, I think it's great, the way you guys are raising your kids. Their getting to see parts of the world and be involved with all the cultural learning. You see, I'm a teacher and I know how important it is for kids to learn about other countries. How much better is the learning and growing when kids are immersed in the environment. They get to actually see a Lion in it's environment and not just at a zoo. Personally, I don't think your kids are deprived at all, if anything their blessed. By the way My daughter's name is Joy. Many blessing to your family... Peace be with you.

Happy to see you are making new videos! I think in Uganda it is easy for your kids to be grateful for the basic things they have. Here in America, with the extravagance on TV and people showing off on social media it is a different story. My friends who have older kids are already saying their kids are complaining because they want a new iPhone or they want Hollister clothes or the family car is so embarrassing. I feel stressed out thinking about my girls saying things like that when they are older. And my husband is an immigrant from a third world country and he thinks American kids are so spoiled and doesn't want our kids to be like that. He already plans to have our family volunteer at homeless shelters when they are older so they understand how blessed we are.

You make a good point, Stefanie. There is added pressure in the States for sure. I do think it is possible to do what your husband says and give your kids a different track...not easy, but possible. I have seen some friends manoeuvre it very well. Again, not easy, but doable. And I might say, worth it. :) Much love!

Joy, I am so glad I stubbled upon your channel. I adore you! I am attracted to simple living for the extras it allows. Extra time with my kiddos, and my husband. Extra money to be able to bless other. Extra space and room to move and think. (clutter is noise, and it drives me crazy). Thank you for sharing your bit of the world with us. You are a blessing, and a breath of fresh air.

I LOVE beans and rice. A favourite meal definitely. You’re a gorgeous person Joy. My kids aren’t deprived at all here in Australia - but they could do with being a bit more deprived! Keep doing what you’re doing. P.S I just finished reading the frugalwoods too 😊🌺

Thank you Jane! Where do you live in Aus? I would love to come visit one day...my daughter's best friend is an Aussie. :) I'm almost done with Meet The Frugalwoods! I would have finished it earlier if I didn't have to read the library's pub version on my computer...my eyes are crossed from so much screen reading!

Thank you so much for this video and the encouragement! One of my BIGGEST struggles is not feeling like I’m doing enough for my kids or that I am depriving them. It is ridiculous because well... if the standard is eating out we eat out probably too much 🙈 But really I know deep down our kids are fine. But everything I hear or see people doing for their kids (lessons, vacations, play dates, elaborate birthday parties, etc) I feel guilt. And for us it isn’t necessarily that we can’t afford those things -we could definitely afford some of those things but I get overwhelmed by a super busy schedule and am a serious introvert so I don’t feel like I can keep up. I need to let go of the guilt as I know it is truly stealing my joy.

    • @JoyForney
      @JoyForney  6 лет назад +2

Oooh! I hear you about the overwhelmed with too many activities thing. I am in that same boat here, if you can believe it. I have to limit myself or I get overwhelmed! Anyway, I feel like that guilt is straight from the pit. You are giving your kids a great, stable, calm, loving childhood. What could be better than that?! I think there is a epidemic of busy in the States and I feel it strongly when I'm back there. There is really nothing wrong with not being busy! So take that weight off of your shoulders, girl! You are doing a great job and your kids will look back and remember just how much time they had with you! :) And as my oldest will graduate next year, I am reminded of how quick it does go....it's so nice to look back and remember all the time we spent together...not all the activities I drove him to. :)

this is the problem here in US. Homecooked meal is way healthier and better value... Dont let anyone look down on you. We dont know what we eat outside. Rich people loves eating at home the only thing is they have their own Chef.

The person that says you should take them out to eat may be in debt, and doesnt care what they spend, up to them but that's what happens unfortunately, you are doing a food thing, money is for keeping a roof over your head not to waste on eating out
