    Hi Joy! I just found you and I can't tell you what an answer to prayer you are. You and I have so much in common! First of all, I'm also a stay at home missionary. I'm American, my husband Chinese, and we met and live in Japan, doing ministry to college students and serving at an International church here. We have two kids, an almost 3yo girl and an almost 6 month old boy. I'm also a pastor's kid, raised in Nebraska. I have one adopted sibling. I also live with a chronic illness: type one diabetes. And like you, I want to store up my treasure in Heaven, and be able to use my finances to honor God. Several of your videos have been so encouraging to me, but particularly this one. Since having kids and becoming a full time mom, I've come to enjoy shopping way too much. Almost daily I take my kids to some store or other, usually to purchase a menu item (since there isn't a Walmart here, only small grocery stores, I have to go here and there to find everything I need). Every time I would leave the house to grocery shop or take the kids to the park, I always found a way to drive through for coffee or pick up a donut or ice cream. I know, terrible! All those little treats were adding up (on my waistline too, UGH!) I've been convicted before about my spending habits, and wanting to change; to be wiser, to have self control. But while the money was in my wallet, I let the conviction slide off my shoulders and tried not to think about it. Now we desperately need to make changes. Finances are tight, capital T! We live on support, but its not steady; we never know month to month where/when the money will come from. God is just so gracious and keeps us afloat month to month. I know the change we need must start in my heart, and it has. I desire so deeply to be content with Jesus, and with the simple life, and to show my children that their treasure is in Heaven. Now I'm finally able to take steps toward that life, with your encouragement, and some major repentance and Holy Spirit power! Im simplifying all the stuff our home too. Less stuff to worry about means more time to devote to His kingdom. Thank you Joy. I'll continue to check in here. God bless you!

    You're in my head a lot at the moment Joy! Everytime I open my wardrobe or underwear drawer I can picture yours in my mind... and I want to work towards that freedom and 'space' - both physical space that isn't full of items competing for my attention, and therefore mental 'space' to fully enjoy what is there without being overwhelmed by it or wanting more. I have also been thinking of what a privilege it is to be able to choose to live with less. My husband's family were often in need when he was growing up, and sometimes he doesn't understand why I give things away that are usable... or might be one day. It is a blessing that now we are free to give without fear of having enough, because God has abundantly provided for us - MORE than we really need! I am learning to be generous, and also wise by keeping what is reasonable for the future needs we may have.
    God bless you, sweet Joy. Thank you for your encouragement! :)

    This is so encouraging!! I'm a spender and like you said it's not $1k of dollars. It's an ideal of being content where I'm at. In fact God has revealed that for me shopping is so stressful. Clarity is a beautiful thing!!! I'm going to be in prayer about what a "no spend month, year" will look like for our family. Thank you!!

      You are very welcome! And you said it, "being content where I'm at" has really been the key! Please let me know what you decide for your family {it doesn't have to look anything like mine!} and I'll be cheering for you from Uganda!

    I am slowly working my way towards a shopping ban but the struggle is real. I have started by keeping track of everything that I buy each month and then trying to make sure that I buy less in the following month, with the goal of working towards a shopping ban. It has been a real eye opener for me. I have also started to try and reuse items and rethink before just tossing something. I am so looking forward to your video on contentment because I think that plays a huge role in the challenge. Thanks so much for sharing!

      Medium Mommy The idea of tracking is great for bringing awareness to what I am buying each month. Thanks for the tip!

      Such a good strategy! I think until we have our expenses down on paper it's easy to dismiss. I love that you are being conscious about it. Girl, I get that the struggle is real. This is not from someone who has it all figured out {sadly}, but someone right in that tension!! Much love!!

    I'm on a no shopping ban! No online shopping for clothes, shoes, or makeup. I'm planning on using up what I have and wearing what I own right now. I feel like I'm constantly warring against myself. I need to learn to be content, and not define myself by my possession. Looking forward to seeing your contentment video! :-)

    I am limiting my purchases yearly. This year it is 3 clothing items for myself, five household items and five beauty items. The beauty is huge for me as I am aging(47) and have worn make-up since I was 13. I do things like using eyeshadow or lipstick for blush, etc. I love your mending the oven mitt. That's awesome!

    • @aprilh5186
      @aprilh5186 6 лет назад +2

      sandlappersue01 I like your idea of limiting the number of purchases. I think this still leaves a little wiggle room but also provides structure. If I only had 3 new clothing purchases for the year I would definitely make sure each purchase was something useful and beautiful. Plus I would look toward better quality so I wouldn't have to use one of my 3 items the following year on that same type of purchase. Thanks for the idea!

    • @sandlappersue01
      @sandlappersue01 6 лет назад +1

      April H You're welcome! It does make you look at quality and have a rotation going. I'm glad it helps!

    • @JoyForney
      @JoyForney  6 лет назад +2

      I love this idea! Limiting purchases helps keep everything in check and helps you stay accountable. I think limiting also helps you to really think about whether or not you LOVE the thing you are buying. And about the aging.....AGH! I hear you girl! I'm just 41 but the struggle is real! :) Even going with less makeup for my videos has been a big stretch for me, as I know I look more "tired" and "pale", but I feel that it's the right thing for ME. I appreciate hearing from you. I LOVE connecting with other women like this!

    Hi Joy! Good for you for doing another no spend year. I definitely would like to try being more frugal minded. I am pregnant right now in a complete opposite season than last time but am taking my time and really planning my purchases for a 10 item maternity wardrobe. I saw a couple tips in the comments about tracking purchases and limiting purchases that I want to try before a complete ban. Thanks for all the inspiration your channel brings! I'm sure you've heard this before but I was reminded of what my Grandma used to say, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without!"

    • @JoyForney
      @JoyForney  6 лет назад

      On the top of my "clothing list" where I track how many times I wear each item {nerd alert} I have that quote! It is an oldie but a goodie and I have never really lived with that mindset until now. I love the idea of planning your maternity purchases...I'm sure you've watched The Daily Connoisseur's maternity 10 item wardrobe videos? She is very good at finding lovely things for pregnancy that last. Much love to you!

      I have committed to this as well! I like the mental challenge of deciding to do something and keeping myself accountable (with my husband's help) I had a blow out with a pair of shoes today and they are gone beyond repair... so I'm going to have to get creative with solving that 'need'... but I like that this makes me think in creative ways I wouldn't have before. :)

    My husband sounds just like your husband!! 😊 I too am doing a no shopping year for clothes. I had a couple things that I really needed for my summer wardrobe because we live in the south (Alabama) and those things were necessary. I have since got them and will co to use with no shopping for the rest of the year. I hadn’t thought about the other categories that you mentioned but now I want to! I’m glad you will do monthly updates because it will help me along my journey as well. I cannot wait to hear about contentment

      Sister, there is no shame in this being impossible!!! Something is better than nothing and a no spend month is a GREAT way to start! For my personality, I have to "go big or go home" and that's how I operate best....others operate with small successes. You do YOU!!! :) Much love!

    Hi Joy, it is very interested to me on the concept of frugal living. I am from a small island in the Caribbean Barbados and when we were growing up is was customary to reuse and recycle.
    Even now as a developing country many people still only buy want they need and spurge on special occasions.
    So this constant buying and shopping everyday or every week is certainly a new phenomenon and this consumerism behavior is very much from the western world.
    So it is quite refreshing to see so many people embracing consuming less and becoming contented with the blessings of God.

    Good for you! I'm not doing a no spend year, since we tend to be pretty frugal. :) I am going to be in the US for a year starting this summer, and I'm determined to keep my shopping to a minimum then. One change I want to make is occasionally paying more for something that will last longer instead of less expensive things that need to be replaced more often.

    Joy, always enjoy receiving the email that you've posted another video. I've joined forces with you on the no spend year adjusted for our family. Mainly, nothing new unless its a NEED. I keep a weekly tea date with a friend, that I look forward to so much more since I stopped purchasing multiple teas at my fav shoppe a few times a week. However, in all honesty, I struggle with feeling content when so and so has the cutest new shoes or whatever. I thought it would initially be freeing, and I do feel maturity in being frugal and going against the grain, but its still a challenge for me mentally.

    You are such a lovely person, Joy. I love that you're doing a no spend year. I did a "no spend January/February and I'm doing a "no spend year" specifically for clothing. I have a life long struggle with shopping for the "quick fix" of getting a shot of self worth, I guess you could call it. What's interesting about banning myself from clothes shopping is that I have to find other activities to turn to. I'm curious to know if you've noticed a void without shopping, and what do you find you are filling it with? And has a no spend year changed your self- worth and your view of yourself?

    Thank you for sharing! This is something I've been wanting to pray about (I'm just in the praying part of considering it :). I also have a naturally frugal husband. I used to feel bad that I wasn't as frugal as him, but I've changed MY attitude and now I look at his natural tendency as encouraging! Thank you for the encouragement and I'll write back if my praying turns to action! (And I totally get the rabbit hole thing for books, except I do it for homeschooling materials) Oh, one suggestion, I know some libraries let out of area people "buy" a card (I know that is spending money, but our local library back home (AR) was maybe $30 for a card). You would probably have to be in person to do it, but maybe look for a more "southern" library that might have more of the christian titles you are looking for?

    I need to do this! My husband is getting out of the military and joining a local police dept, with a pay cut of 10k per year for the first 1.5 years , then back to normal after that. It's a huge difference in pay but his heart really isn't in active duty military and so the sacrifices is worth it. I tho k I'll start with a no spend month!
