You are probably happier and more committed to each other than those who are financially well off. You don't have to be rich to live a rich life! Finding happiness in the little things that life has to offer....family, good friends, taking long walks in the woods, watching the sun set on a summer's eve...those things are free and bring joy to one's life. 😊

My best money saving suggestion is to use RUclips when I need to repair something. I repaired my car ac, my washing machine, my sister’s dryer, and replaced parts on my dishwasher. There is someone out there who knows how to do things you don’t. I have saved hundreds of dollars on repairs.

I recently had a car problem that needed a new part. My mechanic quoted EU1,700 (USD2,010) for the part, plus labour. He said he'd 'ring around' to get me a cheaper part, but weeks went by and nothing happened. I used the internet to find a second-hand part and it cost me EU100 (USD118). I picked up the part and brought it to my mechanic, which did the job.

Although gifts are nice and appreciated, it’s the handwritten notes that I have kept through the years. It still brings me untold joy to reread those cards and letters. I have a special box (my teacher treasures!) where I store them, and get them out about once a year and relive my time with that child ❤️

so many people are wasteful. I hate seeing anything go into the landfill or down the drain. Yes, I did grow up "poor" (by today's standards) but I think of all the great frugal knowledge I gained as a child. I unplug the toaster and coffee maker etc, turn off lights. My husband (who is a lawyer) has taken a salami sandwich to work almost every day while his colleagues eat in restaurants. Although we enjoy eating out, there is no point when the clock is ticking. My friends call me cheap. Yet I am generous with my money. My husband and I have taken my mother on her "dream trip" to Greece and covered the whole cost. We took her to restaurants, on tours, and on a small cruise. Thank the salami sandwiches and an unplugged toaster. It's all about choices.

Vinegar gets rid of odd smells, pet smells too. I don't use borax because I had heard and have noticed my clothes hold up much better without. Supposedly borax breaks down elastic in clothes. Also With pants I close the zipper and button the waist. It keeps the washer from using the zipper to grind holes in clothes- especially t-shirts.

So many great tips! Thanks so much for sharing!
I've been frugal just about my whole life. I've taken it to extremes at times. I've done just about all you do except I've never had cable, Netflix or any other TV service. I subscribe to nothing I'd have to pay for. I check the library for free entertainment. I unplug everything, except the refrigerator, until I need it. Everything else I plug in to use it and then unplug it when I'm finished with it. I even turn the breaker off to stove at the breaker box until I'm ready to cook and then turn it off again when I'm finished cooking. I do use a dryer because I'm allergic to so many different pollens. Some things I dry in the basement on drying racks but there's limited space for that. Overall, I've cut down electricity use by 87%. It was unbelievable when I saw the bills going down!
Before a shower or bath, I catch the water that would normally go down the drain while the water warms up. I put it in bottles and use it on gardens.
I don't start using AC in the summer until it's 86--89 degrees outside. I open windows and use ceiling fans for as long as possible. In the fall I try to wait until Thanksgiving to turn on heat, but I've never made it that long. When it's 63--64 degrees inside, my nose starts to get cold. That's when I turn the heat on and keep it at 68 in the daytime and, unless it's freezing outside, I turn it off at night because I can use blankets at night to keep my nose warm. I also turn AC off at night in the summer. I'm only ever going to have one light on in the house. If I had children at home that would have to be different.
I've done so many more things but if I list them all, this will be a book! Thanks again for sharing.
I always ask for discounts. I use coupons at times but that can be a full time job. I do not take that to extremes. I do read sale flyers, meal plan and shop according to lowest prices. I challenge myself to wait as long as possible in between grocery shopping because every time we enter a store we're likely to do some unplanned spontaneous or impulsive shopping. I eat before grocery shopping and always shop alone. If we shop with others, it's easy to buy many more things to buy than we ever would on our own.
I turn off water all the time I'm not using it. All of us know to turn it off while we brush teeth. I turn it off while I'm washing my face. I turn it off while I'm washing my hands. I turn it off while I'm showering. I get wet, turn the water off, wash hair, turn water on to rinse hair. Turn water off. Apply conditioner, wash. myself, then turn shower eater on again to rinse self and conditioner out of hair. Uses a fraction of the water a regular shower uses. I hand wash dishes. I start with a medium bowl of soap and water to wash dishes in and when a few are done I rinse them off in a smallish stream of water. I keep doing that till fishes are done. Saves a ton of water.
I scavenge for berries and edible greens in the summer.
All of us can always learn more from each other!

Cars outside there had bald tires, broken windows and tied bungee cords to broken trunks, three ladies leaving so thrilled with their finds they exclaimed, car doors sounded! as if they needed a crowbar to open and close them. Who can afford auto insurance, bicycle you say? not here in Montana we are to spread out and weather doesn't permit either. Do or do without.

@@Wonders19_ Thank you for your reply! I put a large stainless steel bowl in the shower under the shower head, so that the warming water falls into the bowl instead of going down the drain. Once I use the bowl in the shower that becomes it's only use. I don't go back to using it for food. I've also used plastic buckets in the past. Once the bucket or bowl is full, I pour it through the funnel into the plastic gallon bottles and store those. When it's time to water I take the gallon jugs and water with them. I use the gallon jugs over and over again. It's a little bit of a process but not much...only takes a few minutes, and it saves a lot on water.

At least she didn’t put it in the microwave! (That is a crime against tea.)
I was actually going to look it up for myself, as I have the exact same problem with being seemingly incompetent when it comes to measuring fresh coffee, but if it’s how it appears and can be set to a specific temperature, it would also be handy for fresh/loose tea. Ideally, tea should be brewed at about 90-95°, so boiling water needs to cool slightly, and different tea varieties have quite varying brewing temps & times. There’s a couple of new devices on the market that now do the same thing for tea brewing - tap in your criteria and it does it all for you, but that’s a truly expensive unnecessary separate gadget really. I currently use a £7 temp probe on the hot water before depositing tea leaves.
Add in that I’m disabled and can’t lift a kettle, and a combined coffee & tea maker would be ideal for me though. Assuming it can work on 240v and in °C!

I also have a handy tip for mothers trying to keep small children clothed. When our son was little, we pretty much bought all his clothing, except what he received as hand-me-downs, from thrift stores. Often, I would find a nearly-new looking pair of overalls or sleepers that was missing one or more snaps. I can't remember where I found it (we're going back more than 30 years here), but I bought a little gadget for installing snaps. There is a balance. If you use cloth napkins, you have to wash cloth napkins which includes water, the electric/gas of heating the water and running washer/dryer, wear on the washer/dryer, laundry powder, your labor. So I don't know that you are saving money. Same with using cleaning rags versus paper towels, using washable diapers or menstruation pads, etc. Disposable still rocks for me. The convenience tips the scales because I really think people aren't taking into account the hidden expenses (listed above) of using re-usable. So I keep a dish towel for drying hands but I also keep paper towels - balance. I tried using cloth napkins for a couple of years and nobody liked using them because it felt like you were messing up something. So I went back to paper napkins. As far as the environmental footprint... napkins, paper towels, wipes, toilet paper, tissue disintegrate pretty good. So I'm not worried about paper goods and the environment. Cloth takes longer to disintegrate (I would use cotton cloth if you are worried about it). But by the time you make (or purchase) cloth re-usables, you've spent more money up front and then the hidden costs of washing them over and over again adds up. So you are a wash on expense and the convenience tips the scale. So use balance. I read that using bar soap makes for more soap scum in your shower/bathtub. So I will continue to use body wash so I don't have to scrub too hard or use harsh chemicals to clean my bathtub/shower. When I used a bar soap, I used it all the way until the sliver would fit on the new bar of soap and glommed it on and used it up. My husband didn't. He threw away the sliver. It's all in the balance.

Later, ironically, I inherited all the money my 'tight' parents died with. I really felt it was a shame they never truly got to enjoy their hard labors... they had no Balance.

I worked at a preschool once and the administration purchased a Keurig coffee machine for the staff lounge/lunchroom and everyone was abuzz about having a cup of coffee. Well, talk about a bunch of hype and oversell/ratings.
First, it wasn't hot but more like lukewarm flavored water. I don't know if they did something to keep the heat low because there were small kids around (I never drank any hot beverages around the kids) or that room temperature flavored water was the norm but it was awful. There were lots of 'flavors' but they all tasted the same. I mean really, what is the difference between supposedly vanilla and supposedly french vanilla bean? Is there a difference, really?
And as mentioned, it's just landfill fertilizer and 'she-she' fake swag. The only pleasure I got out of it was knowing I would never buy a Keurig and wouldn't wouldn't accept one if it were free. No offense to anyone who has one, it is just waste from my perspective, but to each her/his own.

One of my cost saving tips is that over the past several years, I have bought liquid dish and hand soap refills to make my own foaming soaps. There is the initial cost of buying the foaming soap but when it’s empty, I add the liquid soap to the bottom and *gently* fill with a slow stream of water up to an inch from the top. The amount of liquid soap depends on the size of the container but approx 3/4” - 1” is about enough. If you add the water too quickly, it will foam up inside the container and you’ll have to wait until the foam fizzles out to finish. Give the contents a quick stir to mix to combine well and don’t shake. Leave an inch at the top so when the pump is put back in place, you won’t overflow and have a mess to clean up. The best soaps to use are ones that are translucent. I have found that creamy, shiny and beaded soaps will not work well for this application. Depending on use, the pumps can last a really long time and seldom need replacing - maybe once a year. Cheers☺️

Or maybe donating used books (thrifted but in great shape) for their classroom would be much more appreciated. Just my opinion. A game-changer for coffee-making for me was to buy a $6 stovetop espresso maker to use with $2 espresso (Bustelo is my favorite.) It's the only cheap way I've found to get that deep, rich coffee taste that are in Starbucks/barista made drinks at home. Regular homemade coffee wasn't cutting it for me. If you like it iced, making ice cubes out of coffee helps immensely in not watering down the flavor. Also: I use extracts (Ocean State Job Lot has ones for $1) to add flavors. Almond is my favorite. As for laundry: Unless your clothes are filthy rotten dirty, they usually just need a little spruce-up scent wise. I use 1/2 of the recommended amount of detergent and the wash comes out fine.

Love the idea of using pinking shears. We use guest towels for napkins. I bought a bunch in St Thomas, in our honeymoon, and They were just sitting in the closet. I will look for the chamois
Never bought a Keurig, don’t have an RV. We use old socks and tshirts for rags
You could ditch Netflix by getting an Amazon Firestick. It’s like having a giant library of programs. We ditched cable three years ago, and never looked back! Our tv watching even includes more shows!
BUt you have a lot of good tips.

Close water taps while washing. Take a shower while standing in a closed wash basin. When it's full, shower is over. I then use the water for the wc. First yr, I got 2 mths refund on my yearly bill. Grow your own veggies, even without garden. Use the pips, stumps or roots you would throw away otherwise.

If you dissolve bar soap in water you can get lots and lots of liquid soap and/or body wash.
You can also make wrinkle release spray much much better than the commercial sprays by really diluting liquid soap or detergent.

    Brilliant, young lady! Thank you!
I can help you save even more money. Cut any and all support to that theme park which you won't mind doing if you research the child trafficking tunnels and the witnesses testimonies. The hidden "wicked" meanings.
God Bless You and your family.
P.S. I was a barber-stylist trained in precision haircuts, did a lot of military, and the curly hair is the easiest to do because it hides the minor cut discrepancies (like if the child moves suddenly).
Keep up the great work and thank you for raising the next generation with good values.

Thank you for this comment. I will come right out and type what you left out...everything "Disney" is evil. I would never offer anything, from this corporation, to a child. I care too much about children to ever buy anything "Disney" for them.

I haven't purchased soap bars in years. Motels give you small bars of soap. We've used these for years.

Agreed. There have been many years in the past that we could not afford to give teacher gifts. This is the first year that our children have all had fantastic teachers. I would give them the moon if I could! I am though going to get them a gift card.

I've always used binder clips as bag clips. At one point in my life I considered buying bag clips because I thought using binder clips was weird. But honestly I'm too cheap to buy bag clips and I always have binder clips. I don't think I ever remember buying them. They just kind of show up in my house so that's what I use 😅

Practical experience re: homemade laundry detergent and dryer balls:
After using homemade laundry detergent for a couple of years I noticed our clothes were really dull in colour and the whites had greyed noticeably and significantly. Switched back to commercial laundry detergent, et voila! They came back to life. I use about 1/2 the amount of detergent the manufacturer recommends, and it still works fine.
I found dryer balls are not good at getting rid of static, so I had to switch back to dryer sheets. Pity, but there it is. The alternative, of course, is to hang all your laundry to dry, which works fine for most things, towels and sheets excepted. I mean. You *could* hang the towels and sheets, but the towels would be rough and you need a large area to hang sheets, which we don't have.

Most commercial detergents have a blueing agent or optical agent. That's why everything is crisp white. You can use Reckitt's Crown Blue, it's blueing the old way, or blue balls (anil balls, but they're not anil anymore) Just add a tad to the last rinsing water. I use it with my liquid starch in the washing machine.

Tax refunds: The perfect goal is to get no refund and owe nothing. However that’s hardly possible, but it is possible to get very close. Many people look forward to a few thousand dollars in tax refunds, but you could put that money into a savings account and draw interest on it. However little interest that savings account may earn, it is better than the IRS which pays ZERO interest...they just keep your money for a year for free.
