No. 102: delete shopping apps from your phone, use a computer, no. 103: never shop groceries with an empty stomach, no. 104: either shop at farmers markets as you just go for the essentials, supermarkets tempt you to buy more useless things, or pre-order your groceries online as delivery or to collect.

I'm the queen of reusing gift bags. My kids know that anytime a gift bag is given they are to refold it and hand it back to me 😃. I have Xmas bags that are several years old. My daughter in law recently had a baby shower and there were many many bags. I kept a couple and donated the rest to a thrift store where they sell for .50, a win for everyone.

My daughter was 13 before I finished using all of the gift bags I got from her shower and subsequent “congratulations on your baby” gifts.

Regarding the sock tip - in the winter I wear black socks, in the summer I wear white. I buy the same kind all the time. I put them in the drawer loose. Even if I get a hole in one, it doesn't matter. There is always a match.

If you don't recycle the cereal thick plastic bags, use them to freeze meat. I freeze chicken breasts and when thawed I use the same bag to pund the meat for thin steaks.

I liked the tip on not buying big houses with a lot of storage space etc... aslo, when we think long and hard how much space we really really need, we don't need much space to live. We buy big houses, but occupy only a small percentage of the space within them. We tend to just use the bed, maybe a couch, favorite chair and small space in the kitchen and bathroom. And sure, we may like big empty rooms with a "lot of light "etc.. but we basically buy the space the outdoors has to offer. Those who move into smaller spaces, tend to leave their houses more and spend more time outdoors on 'adventures.'

You just described us in our retirement. We went from 2400 sq ft with basement, garages and outbuildings to 1500 with no basement and only a one car garage. I just had to change my mindset that I would not store anything. I use it, display it, have a place for it in the closet and everything else was sold or donated. I sold all my plastic totes so I wouldn't fill them up. My turning point came when I stopped trying to find stuff to get rid of and started to choose places and containers to put things such as a cupboard or closet. I would add my favorite things first and when I was running out of room the rest went. All holiday decor including Christmas had to fit in plastic sweater boxes on the guest room closet shelf. Period.

When I got divorced years ago I moved to a home without a basement. At the time my daughter was little and I missed the basement, but that didn’t last long. So happy not to have a basement. No flooding concerns and knowing I have limited storage space does keep me in check. With Christmas decorations, my weak point, I know that if something new is coming in something else has to go out.

Oh! And another one: you can wash your clothes less often. If they're not stained, you can just hang them outside for few hours and wear them again. Also if you put your clothes in the freezer, cold kills all the bacteria and the smell, so they're fresh again, no need to spend money on washing them that often

    • @antiantipoda

Airing your clothes does work. I do it on the side of my wardrobe on hooks. But freezing your dirty clothes doesn't. The cold slows down the bacteria, but does not kill or clean them. Once you wear the clothes again and they get warm, they still stink again. Washing removes the dirt where the bacteria live and them with it. I tried, it didn't work.

Love all 101 tips! I went to my local thrift store yesterday to drop off some donations and decided to look around inside. I found a pair of lamps ($7.50 each with lampshades!) like I had been looking for a our guest room! I bought them! Those same lamps, new, are $20-25 in the stores and don’t have the shades!
My local grocer offers a 5% discount on total order to senior citizens on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So guess what my grocery shopping days are !😃

I listened to all your fugal habits. I agree with most and already do a bunch of them but can’t do, “If it’s yellow let it mellow, and if it is brown flush it down.” That is a little to much. I am not the only one living in this house.😂

Check 1. you water meter every month to detect small leaks. 2. Run you dishwasher and washing machine while you are in the house. This way you can catch any leak before it gets out of hand. 3. If you have solar panels but no battery storage, run your appliances when the Sun is out. 5. Don’t leave your house until you are sure the toilet you just flushed is not leaking 6. Always empty you bladder before traveling in your car as the seat belt can cause a full bladder to burst.

I really enjoyed this video, thank you! So practical and helpful. Plus many of these are not too difficult for the average person to do. This is a vote to please consider more of these types of videos! I made it to the end and felt like it was an old friend I was watching share the tips. My one extra tip is to shop the very backs and sides/ aisles of stores near break rooms/restrooms, etc.... (think Safeway, Target, etc) for great clearance buys. I've gotten some amazing deals on food, toiletries, sunscreen, books, toddler items, etc. at Safeway like this. Too bad we do not have Aldi in Silicon Valley but another one we do have here that I love Is Grocery Outlet! They even have nice organic finds near me.

We do Lupper -between 2 and 4. Sometimes the same portion as evening will be priced lower. Or, the portion will be smaller and priced much lower. Also, when you order food at a restaurant, request that half be put into a to go box when it arrives. That way you have another meal or two and you won't have to unbutton your pants when you get home. Unless of course you are wearing leggings - or, as I call them, "buffet pants!"

Every year I have to buy a new small calendar to put in my purse to take to dr. appointments. Now I go to the dollar store and buy a small lined journal the same size . On each page I write a month. Then add appointments as needed. It’s nice there is room for extra notes if needed. When the month is over I can just rip off that page. That has lasted me years.

I'm the queen of make ahead meals. When my kids moved out and my recipes seemed too big I started freezing half, or sometimes doubling the recipe and getting 4 meals. Even something as simple as stir fry, if I'm chopping veggies and meat I do a bunch and freeze half. The key to not feeling like leftovers is to prep the food, don't fully cook it. Once I was working on a hard project at work and took four weeks off cooking and cleaned out my freezer!

Sure, I watched from beginning to end. I enjoy your channel & your ideas. When you mentioned washing hoodies...yes, I zip the zipper & I also tie the hood ties because if I don't, the ties can disappear up into the hood.
Another frugal tip for the envelopes that come w/junk mail.....take it apart, then re-fold it inside out. You can re-glue it together & apply glue to close it . They come in handy....you might use one for holding coupons when you go shopping, or mail the form for your dog license in one ....they would , also, be ideal for Jennifer's budgeting ideas she went over in her Dec. 26, 2020 video. 😀

I also buy a bunch of fabric holiday gift bags. Then I just put in the gift add a little tissue and tie the name tag on. Add a little ribbon too. The kids know we reuse all of that next year.

I also refuse my pickle juice instead of pour it out when the pickles are gone. I use it in many many recipes. Meat tenderizer, add it to potato salad, I put my sliced cucumbers in it from my garden during the summer and in days I have pickles, a shot or two for a sore throat, for an upset stomach and my most favorite.. it is the all time best hangover cure!! Just a pickle or 2, or a shot of pickle juice and within an hour your 75% better lol !! Then I refuse the jars for in my husband's garage for loose screws ect ect. ..

I have (almost) all of my socks black. So I just keep them on a pile in my drawer and every morning I take 2 of them and at the end of the day if one has holes in it, I use it as a rug and then get rid of it and I don't have to throw away the other one, bc I can wear it with another one. P.S. Also drink Apple cider vinegar - a little in whatever you drink and on your salad - good for your health and to stave off hunger!
