Anamorphic vs Spherical Lenses - Samyang 1.7x Anamorphic MF Adapter is INSANE!

- I had the Samyang 1.7x Adapter for a while and ran a couple of tests.
Tech specs:
Samyang Cine V-AF Lenses: 24mm, 35mm, 45mm, 75mm, 100mm
Sony A7sIII, Full frame 4k, Slog3, SGamut3
All shots are filmed wide open to see how it holds the sharpness.
The minimum focal distance remains same as the taking lens. Sick!
The thing that this setup is Single Focus System it just makes the life so much easier while rendering amazing looking image!
it looks amazing! The only problem is there is no 3:2 or 3:4 image ratio for video on Sony A7sIII and FX3, 30 ...
Thanks for that!
Who knows, maybe we get the 3:2 soon?
@@iamkoneskyhere’s hoping - would be super useful for a lot of kinds of work these days, not just anamorphic. Thanks for the test, I’m pleasantly surprised how nice these look for the price.
@@philscanlan7321it does look epic! I'll put it into a serious production setup soon and Im sure it will shine!
@@iamkonesky if we don't on the current models, I hope we get it on the next generation of fx3/a7siii. Luckly if its a deal breaker the s5iix seems like a great option, minus the lens selection will be slightly different.
This looks very interesting! thanks for the tests
Thanks mate🙌 If you do have something that want to see, let me know as I'll run few more tests over the weekend🤜🤛
would be nice if Samyang can include a preset to fix the distortion for post production. That would make it super easy to fix up the barrel distortion
I do personally thing that the distortion is cute. Almost anamorphic lens has distortion especially the wide ones, so it give character somehow to the image.
Nice comparison, Chris! Great tests 👌
Only wish you guys did L-mount!
Looks nice. Definitely gonna go with 45 and 100 with the anamorphic plus 24 spherical
Thanks🙌 I love the look and feel of 45mm 👌 also 75mm is spot on
Great video! Love seeing the comparison of all of these lenses together. The best are obviously 45,75, and 100 but I do enjoy the heavy barrel distortion on the 35 for the character. Is the bokeh and flares different then your average anamorphic? I saw another short video and they bokeh had this really interesting looking rectangular bokeh or so I think. Lol
Thanks mate, much appreciate it! I do love the distortion too, it gives the character to the footage. The flare looks good as far as I saw it and the bokeh is oval the longer the lens is.
@@iamkonesky thanks for the quick response!
Looks great! A few questions:
How does the 24mm look when you desqueeze then crop to 2.4:1? Hard to eyeball from your video.
It makes the lenses manual focus only, right? Are you able to do repeatable focus pulls? Is it geared for follow focus?
Does IBIS work with the adapter on?
What metadata does it show up as in the video files? You can use Catalyst Browse to check (or, even better, you could share the camera files)
Hey mate, thanks for that! The 24mm vignettes on fullframe heavily as you can see, but should be okay on s35. The setup becomes MF when the adapter is attached, correct. You can pull focus as it has hard stops and yes its geared for follow focus. Im flying it on the gimbal with the ronin motor on it! Re on IBIS, I need to test it, and also the metadata. Love your questions mate, feel free to flick more if you have and I'll cover in a longer video!
Can you please show how the 24mm looks like In super 35 mode in your full frame? I’m curious to see if it looks like the 35mm
Did you have any issues updating your lenses with the adapter? I’ve got five V-AF and two bricked due to failed updates. So I’m actually terrified to update them again to support this anamorphic adapter.
Im so sorry to hear that. I havent had any issues with the update at all. It all went smooth and easy. Can you share more info on how/what went wrong?
On the 75mm and 100mm it looks like the camera is trying to AF. I know the adapter is manual. But did you have someone pulling focus for these shots?
So I had my friend pulling focus on those shots so to see the bokeh. Note: the friend had never pulled focus in his life 😂
Thanks, good you do a review of the lens setup as well? I don't find any video's about that, how to set it up. What it is compatible with etc.
Sure thing, I am preparing it, and will upload it these days. If any other question arise feel free to drop a comment and I'll try to cover it.
Could u test how the lenses flares look?
Yeah absolutely. I'll do a full video where I'll test everything. If you have any other specific topic to cover, let me know.
@iamkonesky thank ubso much, looking forward to it :)
Yeah I would test flares, close up focus, use on a gimbal, and maybe compare night time shot and daytime shots.
Nice video! I haven’t see any video on the internet on how the 24mm looks like with that anamorphic adaptor in super 35 mode please can you tell me if it looks less like a GoPro ( in your test it does and I don’t like that look, I will use the lense for filming) in theory it will be a 36mm equivalent
Samyang states that the 24mm is best suited for s35
Yes! I wonder if in this video with the anamorphic adapter he was in super 35 mode or in full frame mode for the 24mm, I’m dying to see how it looks
I used on fullframe sensor intentionally but works perfect on super35, looks same as 35mm on fullframe. I'll try upload more tests these days.
Thanks for your reply! Looking forward for your tests
Nice! Do you know how heavy is lens+adapter? Would be interesting if it could fit on the Ronin 4d
I'll measure it and get back to you these days. Isnt that much heavy but might be a bit front heavy for the dji 4d maybe?
@@iamkonesky for sure will need the counterweight, but lets see..thanks legend
It is 905 grams plus the lenses which are 280-350 grams. So it would work with the ronin 4d and counterweight together I believe you just would not get the 4th axis stabilization as the max payload for the Z axis is 1060 grams. So total weight would be about 1550 grams (905 1.7 adapter + 300 lens + 300 counterweight + 50 for lidar)
@@Filmgoblinthere go my gimbal motors ☠️
Thanks for the comparison on all lenses! 🤗 Heavy barrel distortion on wider lenses. How heavy is the adapter?
The lens + the adapter are all together 1180g. I did measured with the 45mm but +- all of the taking lenses are same weight.
@@iamkonesky did you try it on a Gimbal?
@@smepable yeah! Check out the other video I posted. Its all flying on the gimbal.
it looks and works the best on the 75mm and 100mm ... maybe 45mm .
Yeah 45mm is super cute on anamorphic!
Worth it?
Definitely if you want to have spherical and anamorphic setup all together 👌👌
Not bad 👍
Do the lenses have autofocus when paired with the anamorphic adapter?
Its a manual system once you attach the anamorphic adapter.
Is there an decrease in sharpness with the anamorphic adapter?
No as far as I can see. All of the footage I filmed intentionally wide open at 1.8, and it looks clean and sharp.
Can it be used on other lenses?
Only the Rokinon/Samyang V-AF Cine series except the 20mm.
Is it compatible with sony lenses?
No. Only Rokinon/Samyang V-AF Cine series except the 20mm.
Were you able to test out the "soft focus" mode?
I'll do it over the weekend and will come back with more video samples.
@@iamkonesky looking forward to it!
@@iamkonesky Great. I am particularly interested in how "soft focus" mode might affect bokeh and background "busyness", in a desirable way of course.
45mm up, under that is just useless
