FINALLY an Anamorphic Style Edge Blur that WORKS in Davinci Resolve

- Davinci Resolve has yet to implement solid progressive edge blur and lens blur to add character to the ends of frames but there is a sneaky solution that I want to share with you. You can find this type of blurring commonly on vintage lenses as well as anamorphics. This is also sometimes referred to as Petzval field curvature which is commonly seen as a problematic element in lenses, but occasionally we can use them for building an aesthetic with purposeful storytelling in filmmaking and color grading. The great thing about using this method is the ability to customize things like the bokeh shape. This technique is specific to Davinci Resolve 19 (and previous versions where the Tilt-Shift-Blur is fully featured). But I hope to see this feature implemented in more clean and intuitive ways.

If you're not getting the same results it's probably a settings issue in the Tilt Shift effect. Download the powergrade in the description which has everything setup (including the map input linked) or watch this short for additional info on the settings ruclips.net/user/shorts2vxZ7mX1Eqg
As soon as I saw this, I jumped on davinci and gave it a test, Even tried it with the depth map, and it worked like a charm.
I think for a more natural look, the depth map really sold the look I was going for.
Also, I'm soo glad I see you posting content more frequently now, we really need this A++ content!
Thank you!
Another trick for the bokeh to look more natural is to make a node before the tilt shift and gamma down to -5 or -10 and make another node after the tilt shift and gamma up +5 or +10
👍🏻👍🏻
Make sure people understand that you'll need to tweak with the tilt shift focus sweep/range settings or you'll get a ring effect using the circular power window and may not know why
Yep! That's why I have it saved to a powergrade so I don't have to tweak it every time
@@BarrettKaufman I'm actually using this tip on some flash back sequences now that were using the old technique, and this is perfect! Thanks again!
just ran into this!
haha yeah, I had that ring like sharp area surrounded by blur so I added the window on tilt shift node itself, it also worked, But I will stick to this
In case it's helpful, just uploaded this short with more info about the settings ruclips.net/user/shorts2vxZ7mX1Eqg
we had those ironglass lenses wich they shot batman on today in studio for testing and the director decided to take cleaner Leica lenses instead because the amount of post-work to compensate those strong out of focus areas when VFX gets applied would be to huge for the project. Thanks for the nice tip with the tilt-shift effect!
Oh yeah, that would be a huge pain to work with in VFX
I’m dropping a comment just for the engagement. I really like all the videos you have been pumping out
Haha thank you! Gotta feed that algorithm
My general use case has not made me worry about this. That said, many thumbs up for this technique. All of the sudden you end up in a situation where this is an issue.
Totally! Yeah, this is one of those things that's great to know before you need it
Love this. As a solo shooter I've been trialling an anamorphic adapter but finding it very cumbersome. This could give me the look I want without disrupting the flow of the shoot. Thanks!
There's nothing quite like authentic anamorphics 🤌🏻 But it's nice to have backup options when you need to spice things up
I saw this video on my recommendations, clicked on it, liked it a lot and then realized that you are still a small RUclips channel. You did a very good job in explaining everything in a fast and straight to the point way but with enough debth in it! Thank you very much, you got a new subscriber ❤
Thank you!
Super helpful Barrett, thank you! I've been struggling exactly with this issue. Amazing solution.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful
Awesome technique !
Thank you !
Totally!
Awesome effect, the result is amazing. Well done
Thanks!
This set of tips are great. Thank you for sharing!
Totally! Glad you found it helpful 🙌🏻
@@BarrettKaufman Cool to see clips from Searching For the Elephant
The result of this technique is really incredible, thanks for the advice!!
👍🏻👍🏻
Yoooo, this is such an awesome trick! So glad I follow you for a while now!
Glad it's helpful!
What a great tip! thank you!
I've tried already, and it really works wonders!
Awesome
I definitively want to go the opposite way: No blurry corners, no beautyful softness, but strictly clinical. But this method I was looking for since a decade or so for creating realistic shadows (which are sharp right at the vicinity of the object, but get blurry with distance) in photography. So thank you for this valuable inspiration!
Glad it is helpful!
Great!!! I like your nerdy, straight forward content. Greatings from Germany :)
Thank you!
I’ve been wondering about this recently! 🙏
Glad it is helpful!
in fusion there is the node "Variblur". its way more power hungry but it does solve exactly this problem. Unfortunately its not in the color page too but this nice little trick does the job pretty well too i guess :D
Dude this is excellent, thanks for sharing!
@@Owlbot 👍🏻👍🏻
you bring only the best stuff man!
Appreciate it 🙌🏻
Might use this on part of my current project for a flashback scene 🔥
I recognized your name from Tomorrow's Filmmaker's Davinci Class! Great job I've wanted to get this effect for a while! God Bless!
Thanks! I wish I could make updates to that material since the class is many years old at this point and there's been a lot changed since then. Hopefully you still found value in it 👍🏻
@@BarrettKaufman Yeah, I agree but I'm glad you made a yt channel!
Ok, this is so cool! Thank you!
Sure thing!
Amazing! Thanks, man
Thanks!
I usually use "zoom blur" for this effect, but your method gives a bit more control over the characteristics! thank you for sharing this with everyone
Totally 👍🏻
This is one of those rare moments where I was watching the new episodes of House of the Dragon and I thought, "surely there is a youtube tutorial for this" and right as I open youtube, here you are! Thanks so much!! EDIT: I might have spoken too soon. This doesn't seem to work for me in DR 19 beta.
The algorithm knows 😅 If you run into issues make sure your settings match mine in the video and try my powergrade download which should be just about identical
I'll definitely be using this
Great!
You could probably add a zoom effect after the tilt shift and use the matte input as well and then add some subtle stretch to the sides, further matching that look from the corner areas of the Batman derive detuned lenses. Love the concept of this technique. I’d never thought of it like this!
Love it 👍🏻
Lovely effect !!! Please do a tutorial of a dissolve transition where a part of the image (eg sky) dissolve first than the rest. Thanks !
Thanks for the idea! I'll keep that in mind
Amazing! Thank you! I might try this with a touch of chromatic abresion to sell the effect even more! :)
Do it!
Thanks for that little secret. Can’t wait to try this out
Have fun!
Super !!!!!!! Great !!!!!!
Thanks!
Great video!
Tilt Shift is underrated - I first noticed someone using it a little like this with a 'Deakinizer' effect, though much more stylised (and they were using two to control horizontal and vertical falloff
I think they should really rename it and beef it up - it could do with some more control of the iris, input for custom bokeh etc
There's a great plugin by Peregrine Labs that got integrated into Nuke which can do a lot more - emulates those swirly bokeh really well.
Totally agree! I feel like there is huge potential here and hopefully the Blackmagic leans into it
@@BarrettKaufman yeah, it's nice to do it practically, but I really see the appeal of doing these sort of things in post - there was similar in Fincher's the Killer I believe.
Haha what a great technique, thanks! 🎉
👍🏻👍🏻
I studied film and this is something that if we analyze it is very funny. The most expensive lenses are usually the ones that look the worst in terms of sharpness and chromatic aberration. For example, a sigma art is much cheaper than a cooke and to me it looks better. The advantage of all this is that you can take a cheap lens and make it look like an expensive one. Great tutorial friend.
That's funny. I also love the look of the sigma art lenses. To me they look like one of the best lenses I've ever had the pleasure of using
Totally true 👍🏻 It's a strange balance we run in filmmaking. Ever increasing resolution and dynamic range, yet still in love with the imperfections of classic analog solutions
love this idea - just wodering how you get the node with the 4 triangles rather than the two triangle regular node?
I have found the double triangle node - but now it wont let me connect green triangle to blue triangle on the tilt shift node - any tips?
If you haven't already, download my powergrade and try that. It has both nodes already linked
@@BarrettKaufman I have DL'd and tried to use however when I click to add to my footage resolve shuts down - will try DL'ing and adding to resolve again
mask did not work for me at first, it seemed to blur the white parts too but then i changed the key output offset to 0.5 and now it works.
thank you btw this is a great solution
it would have been useful to tell that we need to change the settings in the "depth of field" tab too. not a big thing, just was confused at first why the effect does appear different when i was recreating it.
Thanks for the feedback 👍🏻
Another person mentioned that same thing so I may just cut a youtube short walking through it for added clarity
Is there a way to do it in Premiere?
Thanks!
I don't believe there is a native tool in Premiere that does this
I appreciate the energy and passion here but it was hard to follow. I think there were some steps skipped when it comes to setting up the node tree.
@@TrapPhoneLoveMelodiesss Thanks for the feedback 👍🏻 The powergrade is free to help ensure all your setup matches what I'm doing. Maybe give that a download and see if it helps
