Brilliant lesson! My understanding of color correction has made a qualitative leap. I have not come across such a simple and clear explanation on the Internet. Huge thanks, like and subscribe!
Learned so much from your substractive color series too. It's always great to see you go beyond just showing steps on editing software and explaining how the real thing physically happens on film.
This honestly came in clutch. No one ever explained to me before that mid-greys and the blackest parts of an image should be preserved, as such my work often looked dull and washed instead of having a notable contrast. Hours of replicating the look of films and no matter how close I thought I was, it was never the same. I appreciate it, my man 🫶
I would like to thank you a lot for simply explaining this process and makes us actually want to use it. Also thanks for giving us for free those 2 power grades. You just won a new subscriber!
Hi, i have a question about your steps around adding contrast: Why do you lower the pivot when adding contrast, what does it do to the image and when should or shouldn't you do it? Amazing captivating content by the way!
While watching your video once I noticed you building the look in timeline space in Color page, how does that affect any of the Graphics or titles of the film and how do you deal with it, just need an information on it
Great channel, very well done! Your camera and DavinciWG Intermediate specific 18% gray charts are great. Did you create these? If not can you share where you got them from? If you did create them, would love to see a video how you made them. Keep up the great work!
Turning down the key output gain before you start split toning is brilliant. These adjustments are way too strong without that key step. Thank for sharing! Where can one find the test mid grey chart you used here?
Hey! The test chat is at the resource link in the description. It will be under the "Split Tone Downloads" toggle It should be one of the very first things on the page
Great information! One issue though - your mid gray point is slightly off. I know this because without adjustments to that node, there should be zero change in the grade , whether on or off, if the point is in the right spot. In reproducing your point, I found it very very slightly off. I created a different point that appears to be perfect. I would recheck yours by turning that node on and off.
Welcome to the crazy world of the curves tool in Resolve haha! It definitely needs improvement when it comes to the precision of how it works Thankfully other tool developers are helping fill this gap while Resolve catches up
Hi Barrett, great video. I've seen a lot of colourists use CSTs in the node view to control when the transformation into the output colour space happens, but DaVinci seem to encourage the use of colour management to convert to the output colour space before the node tree. Do you use CSTs in nodes out of habit or is there some tangible benefit to this? Thanks!
can you please do a tutorial on how to achieve a day for night look? man i love your videos…nobody on youtube explained the fundamentals of split toning the way you did! Thanks a lot…
@@BarrettKaufman Yea sorry about that you literally said it in the video I forgot to say that I figured it out. And is it possible for you to go more in to detail about using the grey card.
Camera manufacturers publish white papers on their log flavors and the mid grey point is mentioned in each one You can use that to verify where the mid grey patch would be for Arri and Canon
I purchased FilmUnlimited a while back but am not using on this project. However in general, global look adjustments should go towards the end of any color processing
hi . i love the way you explain things . i have one request . i have been in colorgrading field for almost 5 years now . i work in mac powered work flow . and i have been struggling wth a gamma shift in my exports all my career no youtuber has given a proper solution , id say iv tried evrything out there . can you please show us how to sort this out startting from display settings to callibration and export settings for web and cinema.
Yeah, this is one of those tools that looks really bad when executed poorly The VSCO photo app has a "split tone" tool that is an example of bad implementation IMO
Have struggled with split toning for a while and this just nailed it for me. Thank you so much for not complicating the process.
@@pwanipost Thanks for letting me know!
Same for me 😊

Hey! Biggest benefit is control. Nothing wrong with using Project Level color management, but node based allows more options

Amazing Barrett, more than the knowledge, I like your philosophy!
Thank you!
great I feel like this is exactly what I needed, I'm tired of adjusting the implemented Film LUTs this is much more handy and variable
👍🏻👍🏻
You can also enable splines if you’re having a hard time making smooth curve edits.
indeed an eye opening video

Love the input. Thank You!

Awsome video how do we make a ArriLogc or canon one is it same method or would we need to find it
