Thats a huge challenge sometimes with camera work in forests where everything is yellow green even after a general balance. The slight reduction on lift is perfect.
Thanks for watching! You can also experiment with the same adjustment but with the Log wheel. With that, you'll be able to set adjust the range of this "clean up" effect. ;)

One question: If I'm working with LOG footage, where in this node tree would be the most appropriate place for me to convert from LOG to Rec.709? After the primaries? I'm going to experiment but would love to hear from you George if possible!
@@Andre_Blais That’s great! I would love to see the final result. Regarding the conversion from Log to Rec709, I would place it towards the end of the node. It could go at the very end but it could also go before the sharpen node in this case.

Just want to let you know that you can do the same functions in your HSL look nodes with the color slice tool instead. The color slice saturation slider applies saturation in a way that doesn't increase luminance which is the same as what you're doing with your HSL workflow. It will save you the time of disabling channel 1 & 3 every time.
This was fantastic. In particular, the matte node and how it comes into play. Gotta rewatch and make sure that part of it's clear. Maybe you have earlier tutorials how to set that one up.

I don't have the "Add Matte" option in Group Pre-Clip. Is it a feature of version 19 or something? Also, when I lower the mid-detail, it affects everything, not just the blacks

@@george.colorist that’s very inconvenient as some clips might need to be slightly adjusted in exposure or balance. So copy and paste on all clips will not work. If anyone knows a better solution?

I love this workflow, thanks for sharing your experience. It has a huge impact on the filmmaker community. The only thing I would like to clarify is whether the video was shot in 8-bit or 10-bit? If 8-bit - no question at all. But if your footage was shot in 10-bit, using 10-bit tools (such as HDR colour wheels ) is better. Basic Color Correction: Primary colour correction tools like lift, gamma, and gain adjustments work within 8-bit workflows. Using 8-bit tools for 10-bit video can result in colour banding and loss of detail, impacting the overall video quality. I'm just operating the data from the official BM web. I'm not sure if it makes a real-life difference. I’d love to hear how you handle 8-bit and 10-bit tools on colour pages!
All tools inside Resolve work in a 32-bit environment. I've been a professional colorist for almost 10 years, and I've never heard anything about that. Can you post a link to where you've got this information?

Great tutorial, the only thing with color grading tutorial is that in reality we depend the camera used,.i mean lets get realistic, is not the same grading a Red raw footage or a prosumer camera.

While there are some technical things that need to be considered that do affect and define limitations when color grading, a good color grade can be applied to either a prosumer camera or high end camera. I've seen bad color grades on videos that were shot on a RED and I've seen amazing color grades on videos shot on Sony cameras.
What a fantastic look breakdown! Using an alpha of the same image to limit certain operations is so clever - loved that! I just had a quick question - is there a reason why you're using just the G channel in your HSV and HSL nodes? I noticed that you are switching channels 1 & 3 for the HSV & HSL nodes. So whatever you do in your Gamma and Gain is already going to affect the saturation only. So I'm curious to find out if there is a reason why you do your adjustments to the G channel only instead of doing them to the YRGB. Thanks for your input in advance. Incredible work! Thanks Marieta! In regards to adjusting the G channel as opposed to using the YRGB wheel, its just a habit of mine from getting used to adjusting individual channels. You can adjust via the YRGB wheel or the G channel. It will do the same thing.

For this tutorial, you can definitely copy the node tree and save it as a PowerGrade. This look is completely different from the look my PowerGrades give you. My PowerGrades feature more elements, such as additional effects, built-in looks, and lifetime updates.
@@PiingpeiPictures HSV sat can be a little strong and can easily create artifacts if you apply too much so just keep a good eye on your image. Besides that it just depends on what kind of look you want. If you want dense colors, HSV saturation is a good choice but maybe not for other kinds of looks.
Very efficient and interesting ! But in a node level workflow, it doesn't work because the matte is still in log. Do you have any tip to add more contrast in this matte node ?
You can do the soft blacks effect in a node after your contrast node if you prefer. It will still work if the matte is in log. The intensity to which you set MTD will just vary.
George, when using a matte, the selection will be the highlites, not the shadows. So your first technique to remove mid tone detail from the shadows is incorrect. Dropping the mid tone detail actually impacts the highlights.
Yes, the default selection when you add a matte node is the highlights but the selection was inverted in the Key palette so it is affecting the shadows.
This was a good one George, though I’m a bit confused on the matte node, as it applies to the blacks node: I was under the impression the matte only affects the highlights and upper mid tones, not shadows? Maybe I missed something?
By default, the matte node creates a smooth selection that targets the highlights but this selection can be inverted to affect the shadows which is what I did in this workflow.
I am by no means new to davinci or color grading. This video had me hit the point on the Intelligence/ignorance curve where I realize I know nothing about color grading. Do you have any advice for how to get to that point of understanding why youre doing each step?

It's not a feature of Resolve 19. You can't create matte nodes on any Group level node tree. Only in individual Clip node trees.

You can invert the selection in the Key palette. Select Shift+H on keyboard to see the selection you are creating with the matte.

George, when using a matte, the selection will be the highlites, not the shadows. So your first technique to remove mid tone detail from the shadows is incorrect.
Dropping the mid tone detail actually impacts the highlights.
Yes, the default selection when you add a matte node is the highlights but the selection was inverted in the Key palette so it is affecting the shadows.

This was a good one George, though I’m a bit confused on the matte node, as it applies to the blacks node: I was under the impression the matte only affects the highlights and upper mid tones, not shadows? Maybe I missed something?
By default, the matte node creates a smooth selection that targets the highlights but this selection can be inverted to affect the shadows which is what I did in this workflow.
