  • A Better Way To Install Heavy duty Wire Storage Racks
I’ve been using this method to install wire storage shelves for about five years now and have found it to be strong, versatile, and forgiving. The wire shelves may need to be notched for the occasional obstacle such as an electrical conduit. Even with portions of the shelves cut out I have found the installations to be up to the task they were designed for. This method can be used in any location that has vertical studs. It's great for but not limited to storage sheds, garages, and closets.

Great use of the shelving materials. I've found that at restaurants when the plastic wheels break will often discard the units which provides free shelves. which make awesome grills. Thank you for the video

You convinced me. I'll try it! Just to purty it up, I'd love to make the side panels from thick acrylic glass and put some LED glow through it. The brilliant part about your design is the way that the side panels force everything to stay square, so leverage won't work the mount screws out. A dozen (tight) screws can handle a surprising amount of shear force.

Yes, this arrangement is surprisingly strong. Although I haven't done any objective tests like loading it with weights until failure. I did hang from the first set of shelves I installed (I'm about 250 lbs) and it seemed to do just fine.

Just came across your video...Nice idea...I wouldn’t think that would hold over a long period of time. Any hacks for wire closet shelves. Have way more of those than this type.

I don't know any tricks for closet wire shelves. As for the system from the video, I've been using it for several years to hold hundreds of pounds of hardwood with no trouble.

Hi! Ran across your video. Love your unconventional way of putting up shelves! I have started moving over toward wire shelving and don’t have any plans on turning back. I had a question I need help with. I normally use the wire brackets that support these wire shelves I can mount them and hang from them and 50 pounds or more on a 48 inch shelf, they are strong. How much weight will yours hold if they are only mounted with the screws? Did you provide any further reinforcement with the side wood panels to attach them to walls at our plywood? With sheet rock, I don’t always have studs to go into. My question has to do with how much weight these shells will hold. Thanks for a wonderful video!

I haven't tested the upper limit of the shelves yet, but I have hung from them (my body weight is 250 lbs), and they didn't show any signs of failure. The manufacturer provides an upper limit for each shelf when used conventionally, so that would be a consideration. The only way to know for sure would be to test until failure.
To answer your question about the wood side panels, I didn't add any additional support. The only connection is where the screws go through the wire shelves into the wood. If you only have studs, make sure to use screws that are strong and long enough to go into the stud far enough.

Thanks so much Justin or answering my question. Wow, that’s just incredible. I’m scratching my head. I understand how just the screws attached in the plywood can hold that much weight. I guess I don’t understand engineering principles, but it would seem that that would not be enough even with the wood panels and the angles. Well, I’m glad it works for you. I, will try to incorporate your method in my next use of shelving. Right now I’m installing four large 72 inch wide by 24 inch deep shelves in my garage. I I am having to cut it down to fit in 66 inch area. Have you ever had to cut in the re-welded these types of shelving so they will fit on Support brackets that are made for the 1 inch post to go and sit on? I cannot find anything on the Internet or particularly on RUclips that deals with this. Let me know if you know any resources like that. Thanks again for your time and for your help God bless..
