Upgrade a Wire Shelf in Under an Hour

- Katelyn’s brother needed a wood shelf for a wire shelf unit to use as a coffee bar, and we happened to be in town with a handful of tools (y’all travel with tools too right?) so we made one for him!
Thank you Kreg for sponsoring this video! Check out the Kreg Rip-Cut goo.gl/pu4uRZ and Kreg Accu-Cut goo.gl/HjnwHF that we used in this project

This easy DIY shelf really was just that… supah… easy. If you’re wondering how to make shelves, we hope that this tutorials shows you that you don’t need a ton of tools to do so. My brother used this for his coffee bar but you could also make closet shelves, a table top, a laundry countertop… so many different uses. Hope this helps with your DIY shelves!

For people without any tools at all: home depot and places like that let you rent tools. When I was first in college I needed a drill, so I rented one from home depot for $11. Cheap and totally worth it for people who only have one or two projects.
Renting tools is a great way to go!
I once used just a drill bit to drill through 3 inches of wood... the wood-shop teacher said anyone who could do it would get a 10 (equivalent to a A+), point being you can do whatever even without power tools it just takes a lot more time
... maybe wood-shop, I've got no clue what the correct word is in English I'm just guessing
@Daniel Kintigh I looked it up on home depot... a circular saw is $18/ day. And I vaguely remember that you supposedly are liable to pay the price of the tool if you break it.
I never knew that! Thanks
@@LZP123
Every household needs a good drill, no matter what. It's probably the one tool you can't be without, so you might as well buy it.
What luck! I have some shelves with wire and would love to instead use wood. I AM ON IT. Thank you for the cool video!
OOH YAYYY! Send us some pics with how they turned out 😀😀👍
Yay easy things! Could you guys do more easy kitchen things? I see so many videos by like Buzzfeed that seem either kind of janky or waaay too over-engineered for a normal person. I see so many “hidden storage next to your fridge!” or “use some command hooks and pray!” lifehacks - I’d love to see ones by people that know what they’re doing.
Not quite a “debunking lifehacks amd lighting things on fire” thing like William Osman has been doing lately, but maybe “that shitty lifehack but better!”
Love you guys ❤️
Oooo! We have an older video where we made a rolling pantry for our friend: ruclips.net/video/6nCXps2O4lI/видео.html Haha yeah life hacks are so hilariously bad sometimes, that's a great idea to do a "life hacks but better" series!
My mother uses these kinds of shelves for her plants (African Violets I believe, I'm not into plants), and she said they weren't getting enough light as winter is coming (yep, I used that reference). So I made a similar board out of peg board with a 5m strip of LED lights cut into 6 rows. It fit nicely into that space inside the metal shelf, can be zip-tied into place (because peg board) and the LEDs are some new kind of grow-light that is supposed to be good for plants. Last report I heard was that the plants are now doing very well... and she wants more panels... lol
that's a really smart idea to incorporate lights! :)
Katelyn that face when you were covered in sawdust is priceless! This was a nice, simple project that looks totally doable! 👍👍 ("doable" looks so weird!)
Thank you! Haha doable is the absolute weirdest looking word
@@EvanAndKatelyn
I disagree. "Doing" doesn't look like it should be a verb at all, let alone two syllables. It looks like it should rhyme with "boing".
You could totally do all of this with handsaws. My retired cabinet maker grandfather needs to have a few words with you ;)
Your grandfather is right - kids these days have no patience! :P
Generation Amazon Prime! We demand instant gratification!!!
I have been moving towards hand tools for a few years now. They are quiet, and I am finding I am more productive with them (which would surprise your grandfather not at all, I am certain).
If you're completely new and don't have experience cutting straight then probably not, though.
@@Yonatan24 If you're completely new then I'd say it's best to learn how to cut straight! 😉
Honestly you guys could do anything in these videos, like replace a fricking light bulb, the process and your guys make it so damn entertaining and seem so accessible, especially my light bulb example, definitely could not do that without a video of you guys doing it with solely the cat paw finger puppets
Haha a cat paw light bulb episode would be hilarious because it would probably end up being quite a challenge to change it with those paws! Thank you!
You guys are so entertaining! Doesn’t hurt that katelyn is super cute too!
Awesome job Y'all! 👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻 ...Great measuring Katelyn's Brother 👍🏻👊🏻..... I've been eyeballing the Accu-Cut for a while, but definitely want to get the Rip-Cut as well! 😃
Thank you! My brother with his measuring skills is the true hero :P We use the Accu-Cut and Rip-Cut a lotttttttt
I had this problem recently, and used large tiles to cover the wire. You can totally just buy them one at a time and they come in beautiful colors and finishes, and you could buy a selection to fit the shelf perfectly. They're easy to keep clean and are totally heat resistant.
That's a great tip, thanks for sharing! 😁
Patiently waiting for ya'll to become the new Chip and Joanna on HGTV
Aw thank you!
There was the most hilarious Ad before the video that I didn’t mind sitting through it I almost forgot what video I was actually going to watch lol .
Love watching your videos, I've decided to start my own because of you two. One of my favourite is the wine rack you did.
Thank you! That's so awesome to hear, good luck on your videos!
Katelyn has all the best words. Bigly! And please send some of your warm sunshine over here to the UK.
Dude you can have all the Texas Sunshine and Heat. We are sick of it already. Lol.
Haha we'll try!
you only did 1? why
He only needed one for now but more are easy to make!
First...those shelves are not cheap. Second, you could have just used a drill for the corners (which brother probably had) and you might have been able to coerce the big box to cut the wood for you. I do this all the time to make sturdy shelving. If you just don't want the things to fall through the holes, I use 1/4" plywood where the open edge is not really noticable.
My brother actually didn't have a drill, and I guess we meant cheap compared to buying wooden shelves. Getting the big box stores to cut down sheet goods is a great tip for folks!
So It's not the size of the build that counts, it's how you do it.
true words!
...and who for.
this channel motivates me to do little wood working just to make my small appartment look a little better/cleaner. i live in a small appartment with my future husband and we both own a desktop PC so the living space is filled up fast. i really want a big long dest where not only we could use together, but also where i can get a little bit more space for my VR and maybe create more space in general by removing some furniture and use that big desk to place those stuff on. or some shelves on the walls would also work for our TV and PS games we have lying around
Quick. Easy. I like it! Apparently, Katelyn's brother does too. :-)
YAYY!!
I think that a shelf on top for the cat would’ve been really nice and a scratch post or a scratch pad would make a nice chill place for the cat to be up and off the floor.
Y'all's videos always make my day even when it's a really bad day
aw thank you! Hope you're having a good day today
whoa i love their copper (?) cups :o
Nice job! It really did upgrade the shelf! I can imagine this working well with staining, too. And ofc also with all shelves being wood. But this certainly works well, too
Thank you! Haha we have the same copper cups at home and also love them 😁
If you are only going to make a few cuts or need long cuts most lumber yards and home improvement stores will make cuts for you before you leave the store. Don’t forget the eye protection guys!
Awesome video! I think my SIL has these tools so I'll sweet-talk him into making me (8) of these babies for the metro shelving I use in my closet. These shelves were left over from my former house and I put them to work in the bedroom closet to hold baskets that take the place of a chest of drawers. I wanted to wait until I had lived in the space for awhile before considering a custom closet design. Well, these metro shelves and matching baskets work just fine for a closet, so I'm just going to add wood toppers painted in Pewter by Beyond Paint to match a gray/white bedroom color scheme and call my closet done!
You all are so quirky it makes it fun watching your videos.. keep up the great work
Thank you!
I watched every one of your videos this week and was so sad when I had no more left to watch. I got way to excited when I seen this new video was posted. Like jump out of bed and did a happy dance kinda excited. This channel might just be my new favourite.
aw thank you!!! That really makes our day to hear!
Yes it is simple, but it made a plain shelf unit really pop out! What a great idea! If needed you could use some screws and fender washers to screw the board up from the bottom.
Thank you! and that's a good idea about screwing it in if it ever starts shifting around (or if it wasn't quite a snug enough fit)
Cute and simple 👍
I have the rip cut jig it does good work but there is a bit of a learning curve, at least for me it was lol 😅
I have been thinking about the acucut cuz I do fantasize about a track saw like thing.
Good video tho 😊
I think if you've gotten used to the Rip-Cut you'll pick up the Accu-Cut really quickly 😁👍 Thank you!
I've recently introduced my fienceè to your channel and now we both love watching, learning and laughing along with you guys before bed. ❤
aw thank you! so glad you both like it!
LOL Katlyn is covered in Man Glitter (aka Saw Dust) that looks awesome. Like Joel I have of those shelves. Really makes it look nice. Will have to make a few.
Yay good luck!
What I think would have looked really good would be flipping the metal shelf upside down and insetting the wood into it. (At least it looks good in my head, not sure how good it would look in practice 😂)
Great simple project though!
That could be cool! Thanks!
It would look cool but would not mechanically function properly without additional modifications. These shelves slide in from the top onto plastic keepers that are chamfered. The corners of the shelves that slide over them are also chamfered so that they fit snuggly into one another. If you turn the shelf upside down eventually the connection will disassemble and crash down when weight is applied to the shelf. Don’t ask me how I know this. LOL. 🤫
Katelyn in romper is so cute!
Love seeing you guys create! Especially when it is an easier projects!
Thank you! Was fun tackling a low key simple project :D
The intro music had a kinda This Old House theme Remix vibe going on. Got me grinning. And thanks for the tip.
Glad you like the music! Thanks!
Please please please start setting the depth of your circular saw to the depth of the wood you are cutting. I didn’t when cutting 3/4” ply, the saw snatched and I truncated my right thumb by about 1/2” (I have pictures, but not sure you’d want to see them!). Other than having too much blade in the wood, I was working safely with two hands on the saw. Obviously I’ll never know what would have happened, but less blade in the wood = less chance of it snatching. I don’t think many people know they should be doing this, although my brother (who designs and installs high end office interiors) was very quick to tell me you should!
For completeness, because everyone always asks: my amazing wife found the end of my thumb in amongst the saw dust and took it and me to hospital; no they didn’t reattach it; yes I went through the bone; the plastic surgeon was amazing, the flesh & nail have grown back but obviously bone hasn’t so thumb is about 3/8” shorter than it was; no it doesn’t cause me any real issues, once I’d learnt the new position for my thumb when picking up small objects; yes it does hurt in cold weather.
Re-Reading that and I sound like one of those internet rumour scaremongering weirdos ;)
Such a simple, but good looking upgrade. And impressive you were able to get that kind of fit off site.
Thanks Bruce! Haha yeah we felt very lucky that we didn't have to redo anything, phew!
A shelf isn't truly a shelf without a book on food towers being prominently displayed.
I have several freestanding wire shelf units but the space between the shelves is greater than I need, so there is wasted space. Anyone know how to add additional shelves to these? Thanks
"Words are hard" is hereditary, apparently
All of your projects are so cool and fun
Thank you!
Huge fan of small projects!
Thanks! We weren't sure if people would like the small ones but glad that it seems to be getting good feedback!
it looks amazing. i love your work & your positive
thank you!!
I’m new to this channel and I have to say I really like y’all
Thank you so much!

Katelyn: Do you guys have like...produce?
Katelyn's brother: I have potatoes.......and onions. I don't know how sexy that would look.
Me: Potatoes are so sexy! Having potatoes and onions make me think rugged, dependable, meat and potatoes kind of guy.
I'm glad the Supurrvisor has a local contact to ensure that quality is being maintained.
That's some expert level measuring!
brother did a good job!
You guys always do really cool and creative things witht he different projects you take on. I'm also oober jealous of how good you both look XD
thank you! haha you are much too kind
What are you guys talking about?!?
Potatoes and Onions are super sexy.
You're right. Everyone should have onion and potato centerpieces!!
Love your work!
Thank you!
Katelyn. Love your smile, and your hairs is beautiful as well. Fun channel, i will keep watching
That's some next level organisation
that's how I like my organization :P
Beautiful and short I love it 😗😗😗
Thank you!
Always look forward to your videos guys, love how you make videos! Looking forward to another video x
Woot! Trying to get a bonus video out next week :D
Hey guys you guys should do a series with no power tools 😸keep up the gr8 content
Thank you! Maybe one day, who knows!
4:20 wild supurrvisor appears.
She uses cuteness attack! It's super effective
its a one hit wonder!
No joke, an add for wire shelving played before the video started
Haha so weird...
Glad I couldn’t sleep! I get in quick!
there are some benefits to not sleeping but hope you get caught up on rest later!
just buy some 2x4's and use them as collumns, no need to spend $70 on the wire shelf unit.
Hey E&K,
What do you think about food safe alternatives to putting poly in the kitchen?
Any thoughts?
Since this wasn't really used for food prep or eating we didn't worry about it for this one, but definitely go food safe when food prep or eating is involved!
Another great job you guys did an i hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving too.
Thanks 😊 it was great and hope yours was too!
Wasn't paying too much attention during the intro and assumed the big improvement in the after shot was from modifying more than one shelf. I'm surprised!
It's crazy what a difference just one shelf makes!
I especially liked the part where you put the resin on, used the heat gun to move it around, and then hot-glued the crystals. OK - I may have dozed off again. Good, simple project. Thanks.
Haha! Thank you 😁😋
Good job nice work my friend welcome
Thank you!
Good morning!! :D
good morning to you too!
Goooood sister 😂😂
😛 haha
Why not use a hole saw for the corners so the wood wraps around the posts?
We were working with limited tools since we were out of town, so just trying to keep it simple. But that could look nice!
Damn i wish i lived in Texas. Imagine being able to go outside in a tshirt in late November.
Texas winters are pretty awesome, not gonna lie!
That copper cup "hanger" is gorgeous where can i get one??
Ah it was a gift! Not sure where it came from, might have been bed bath and beyond
I was expecting some negativity in the comments on this one, but I’m super pleasantly surprised. I guess hating on you two is probably like hating kittens and puppies and only grouchy meanie faces would do it.
haha! we worried about getting a little hate since it was so simple, but also didn't want to over-complicate it just for the sake of beefing up the video. Thank you!
Wonder how it wooda [see what I did there :)] looked spray-painted silver to match the shelves ???
haha! Yeah that could look good too!
cool
Thanks!
For a moment I read it as _Easy Self Upgrade_ and I was like: "Huh?!"
haha, we are now a self help channel :P
ahaha I really dislike the look and feel of wire shelves so I'd personally make a small overhang out of wood so it would looks like a sturdy wood and metal shelf
Hi Guys
How are you?
Well, your project is very simple and so cool too. I liked so much.
Congratulations for you and by channel.
Allan Paganini from Brazil
Thank you Allan! Glad you liked the project!
“I have.. potatoes.”
in retrospect a bowl of potatoes might have been just what we needed for staging
EvanAndKatelyn You can never go wrong with such starch, artistic contrast.. 🥔
So why I kept thinking.. why not u guys do some challenges? Like if u reach 250k before end of year.. Evan. Shaved his beard? 😋😋😋... Aaanyway looking forward to see you next project. A coffee table maybe? I'm building a small coffee shop. And for some specific reason.. your positive vibe....
I'm very looking forward to see your idea 😋😋
Ah maybe we should! We don't want to come off like we're grabbing for subs but I do think challenges would be fun!
@@EvanAndKatelyn hmm I got an idea.. why don't u guys make a wooden spoon / trinkets holder? Or something else that more fun n challenging. Between u guys. Either a unique design or joints.. 😋😋
She's Uber pretty & the both of you guys are awesome. Your vids are different but awesome as well! Why I say that. Well I'm different too. An it's good to be different!
Being different is the best!
@@EvanAndKatelyn agreed my friend agreed. I love seeing such good hearted people like you. doing what your doing.
Nice
Thanks!!
Just curious, why just 1 shelf out of 5? Kreg a little cheap on the funds this week? :)
It's to stop the coffee machines wobbling and stop spoons and sugar packets falling through the wires. On other shelves, the wire works better, like keeping the wine bottles from rolling.
Kreg didn't supply any of the tools or materials, we actually bought the tools long before the sponsorship. We only did one shelf bc it was the only one really needed (for the coffee)
Y'all are amazing! Even a relatively simple build like this is completely entertaining and engaging throughout! This might be the first time I actually want metal shelves like that just to combine the metal and wood.
thank you!! Yeah I actually think with the wood it made the metal shelves look really cool!
I love how you need 2 coffee makers.
Haha my brother and his roommate each had their own that they had before they moved in together
Hey Guys are you Gonna make a vid about make soap gems like the resin concrete, resin and patato one
Not right now but someone should, that sounds fun!
EvanAndKatelyn make sure to mention me in that vid 😜
"I have potatoes!!!!"
😁🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔
That was a let down. I expected something great in less than an hour. At least you could have added a little color to the wood. HD sells some shelves for less than $150 It will support up to 1500 lbs per shelf and has 4 shelves.
We usually prefer not to add color to wood but it's just a personal preference - just wanted to share a basic project that you could do your own twist on
Not gonna use many tools.
Pulls out $400 in tools.
Hardware stores will cut to the general size. The rest could easily be done with some form of hand saw and sand paper...
flip the wire shelf over and inlay the wood
that'd look cool!
Too thick, makes the shelves top heavy and dangerous. Good try though.
yall literally cut one board
When you get older do you age or aze? Lol... great video btw ! 3:58
