Just found this channel after finding the Grace Mandarin channel. I often “listen” to RUclips videos instead of watch while I’m at work or driving especially these types of videos where it’s just a talking head format. I could not find any settings where I could convert the speech to English so I will need to watch later at home since I do not understand Chinese.. Yet! But definitely glad I found the channel as I’m excited to start my journey to understand and speak Chinese.
Will, I have been studying Chinese and actually sing/record in Chinese and Korean. I am a student at UVA in the Chinese department and was asked to submit a song to the National Chinese Expo (it is on my channel). I was nervous because most people say my Mandarin is excellent when I sing , but honestly I am just a good mimic. The song was praised by the NCE and accepted for posting on their website .I can sing to you, but not talk to you. Which is why I want to learn this beautiful language and own the ability to communicate. My method to sing has been to find a song, download the character lyrics, convert to either pinyin or romanized words, listen to the song and phonetically write out what was being said, practice copying the singer, perfect my pronunciation, then record the song. I have been doing this for over a year and although I cannot speak as well as I wish, I have definitely seen, in both Korean and Chinese videos that the English translation is NOT what they are actually saying. Sentence structure is different from English. I want to THINK in Mandarin and appreciate your input on your videos. Any advice appreciated. Especially clarity on what to put on the other side of the flashcard, if not an English word. Oh, just saw on the sidebar your how to THINK in Mandarin...going there now......谢谢 罗云熙
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! I'm gonna go and check out your channel now! Please let me know if I can help and if you've got any more questions about learning Mandarin.
This is great Will. I have to say I do enjoy them more when you're speaking Chinese.... if you had CC (Closed Captions) instead of Hanzi/English burned in on the screen, I'd be able to watch with Language Reactor (Desktop) and get a LOT more out of it. But I know you're super busy and I'm grateful for anything. We all really look forward to your videos. On Language Reactor (a Chrome Extension), I use this for Teacher Richard and the "Three Uncles" (DaShu... you were on their show) and wow, it really makes it a great experience. Best wishes, Daniel
Hi Daniel, no problem thanks for that, I'll have to think about how I can implement that into my videos. I've been making videos quite far in advance recently so it might be a few videos time before I can offer the CC function! Cheers, Will.
Just started to develop some anki decks (chracters/words), and the idea to use pictures or something similar instead of translated language (my case: Hungarian) is a brilliant idea. So to avoid 'translation effect' to force/back chinese and native language. I'm opening my deck and delete translations right now :) :) Thanks Will !!!
