    even as a Chinese, I have to think about how to pronounce the tone when I encounter the characters I have never met. don't worry about it, it's normal. I think you can just regard them as different words, so the tones are there for you to learn more characters faster.

    Great video! Thanks for sharing! :) Am I the only one who dislikes spaced repetition techniques like Anki? I’ve tried it at least 3 times during my Mandarin learning journey, only to give up every time because of how boring, stressful, and inefficient it feels to me. I would remember the vocabulary on the cards, but I’d struggle to recall it in real-life situations when needed. And that’s despite using sentence mining and other well-documented techniques, by the way. Could it be that spaced repetition techniques work for most people but not for me? Or am I just gaslighting myself?

    • @twodyport8080
      @twodyport8080 День назад

      Yeah I mean, its not just you. It works, kind of. A bit like hammering in a screw with a hammer. People exaggerate its effectiveness. I find ultimately your brain only takes in so much, and only absorbs what it wants to. It can be useless or useful words, in context or out of context, doesnt matter. It does what it wants. So yeah SRS works just don't expect miracles. Its a long slow grind and maybe you only are able to do a few a day long term. Also you might not see results for a long time.

    • @willhartmandarin
      @willhartmandarin День назад

      It could be that Anki just doesn't work for you, but it could also be how you were using it. How many cards were you adding a day? Did you try and make sentences with the words you were using? Were your cards based around 'recognition' or 'recall'?

    • @rhezer
      @rhezer День назад

      It is definetely boring and stressful, you're not gaslighting yourself there, but is also the most efficient tool to get new vocab, hands down Just don't over do it

    • @janelle.loves.languages
      @janelle.loves.languages День назад

      No you are right…Anki/SRS is super boring and very inefficient long term (studies have proven this). It’s much more fun and efficient to do what’s called extensive reading or reading material that’s 98% comprehensible to you. This is called pleasure reading and studies show it improves your vocabulary by about 1,000 words a year. You may think you can “go faster” with Anki but that’s not true because of something called the affective filter (hypothesized by Stephan Krashen) You won’t acquire as much vocabulary from flashcards as you “force” recall your brain shuts down and doesn’t remember as easily. This is why a lot of Anki users experience burnout and don’t keep up with their reviews or quit altogether. Even a lot of the cards you do remember you will lose within 6 months to a year. It’s much less stressful to read and listen to comprehensible input (98% comprehension rate) and to let those words bake into your subconscious with the natural repetitions of the words on the pages.

    • @rhezer
      @rhezer День назад

      @@janelle.loves.languages can you link the source for the anki studies? 1000 words a year is basically 3 words per day, I can't think of a most inefficient method than this, I could cram 1k words in anki in 7 hours and probably master them just doing the bare minimum reviews. On top of that you only learning vocabulary that's common, maybe the 1k to 2k most common words, good luck acquiring more rare or obscure words that are still very necessary (2k+) it will take ageeees for every word.

I really love how you break down the process of language learning - I hope you don't mind me doing a plug for my own video (ruclips.net/video/8e7qG7xeR94/видео.html), but I think that there's quite a lot of overlap between your tips and mine, especially in relation to starting out with structured content before transitioning to more personalised content. I've tried Anki for Russian without much success but to be honest, I think the consistency simply wasn't there 😭 Great tips, I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to exploring the rest of your video library! 加油!!!

    Hi, very impressive progress big kudos to both of you :) I am learning Mandarin, and I find that making flashcards while listening to podcasts or after a class takes so much time that it almost makes me feel like I am silly wasting time… do you have a similar experience? And then I consume a lot of content in Chinese but if I was to note down everything I would have to quit my job. Am I alone feeling this way?

    • @willhartmandarin
      @willhartmandarin 8 дней назад

      I think you're making too many flashcards. Set yourself a clear goal e.g. today I am going to learn new words from this 30 minute podcast and then write down those 5 sentences and after you've finished watching/listening copy and paste them into anki. A lot of language learning is working out what to learn at what time and prioritising. Really hope this helps!

    You're the only non-native Chinese teaching channel on RUclips who seem comfortable having conversations in Chinese. All the other non-native "teachers" don't seem comfortable speaking for any amount of time on video, especially in a free-flowing conversation. They always talk in English and only occasionally speak Chinese. Your obvious comfort and mastery makes me feel a lot more confident in your methods.

    • @Simon.Oliver15
      @Simon.Oliver15 10 дней назад

      That's a very good question. At the start I was just using the very little vocabulary I had gained from a few pages of the HSK1 book to try and type a bit of Chinese, but as you can imagine this only lasted for like a few seconds before I had to switch to English haha. After this however, I would just try to use all the Chinese I could before I didn't know how to say something and when I didn't know I would just ask my language partner to help me translate it. Obviously during the very start I was mainly using English but I would slowly gain more and more vocabulary each day and try to use it whenever I could. In terms of speaking, I was very hesitant to speak at the very beginning because I was so shy to speak Chinese out loud haha, but once I got more comfortable with the language I would slowly increase the amount of voice messages I was sending in Chinese and this eventually allowed me to start having little conversations in Chinese and I pretty much just did that all the way until the point I'm at today. Hope this makes sense :)!
