The "incorrect" installation may look comical, but fear of doing something like that is exactly why I watch these videos. Thanks for being so to-the-point!
Oh it can get even more incorrecter than that, pardon my grammar. I'm an IT tech and have a friend who's an electrical engineer that tried building a PC for a mutual friend. When the computer stopped booting after being moved I was called to fix it. You can probably guess what I found, he had skipped the retention screw entirely because he couldn't find that riser so the SSD was just sticking out like a sore thumb! Apparently that'll still sorta work for a few weeks.
can absolutely understand, almost had a friend of mine apply thermal paste on the socket with the CPU on top due to a mayonnaise meme gif, until he asked a retail employee while buying said thermal paste
I absolutely love the short and straight to the point style of this video! I am tired of youtubers acting like my time is charity and I should listen to them ramble out of guilt for wanting simple information.
ngl, having to build a new pc after over 7 years and I have had no idea how to install these or where they go on the motherboard. I really appreciate the straightforward information here
always check out your motherboard box for the small screws, they can be smaller than you expect them to be but they should be there if not already on the motherboard
The main point is to use the riser first, install the m2 nvme ssd under an angle of 30 degrees press it towards the riser and on top of it screw down the little screw in order to get the m2 ssd fully horizontal. Many people would forget the riser.
You saved me. I've been installed my NVMe M.2 the wrong way like at 1:00 for a month now cause I thought MSI forgot to include that screw until I found that. 😂😂😂
Undoing the screw took the riser with it - they've been untouched for ten years so had fused together. Watching this gave me the confidence to twist them hard with pliers to separate them. Thanks.
Fantastic instructions, if only MSI motherboards actually cam with the screw shown instead of some weird fake heatsink thing with a permanent screw attached. I had to order a bag of M.2 screws to install mine. Great job guys.
Wish MSI should just put the M.2 Screw on the top of the riser screw instead of putting it in a separate pack that says "M.2 Screw" inside the motherboard box. I first thought it doesn't include the M.2 screw so I installed the incorrect way without the riser screw (1:00) until I found that pack inside the box so I reinstall the correct way.
Thank you! I had the same issue and after reading your comment I went back and checked all the bags of screws in my motherboard box. I guess I just missed one bag.
This is a really good video, thank you! Unfortunately, my B450 Gaming Pro Carbon came with only 1 M.2 screw (as also specified in the user manual, I didn't just lose it). I just wanted to install a new M.2 drive into the second slot, so that I can clone the old one onto the new one, and it turned out I must buy a new M.2 screw. The standoff is there, but the screw is only available for one slot. I like MSI, and I tend to purchase it also in the future, but it would be a great help if you would consider adding a second screw to the package as well. It's not about the cost, it's about me now having to order a new screw and to wait for it to arrive.
You're lucky, I bought my mobo over 2 years ago and today wanted to buy m.2 as I started to run low on storage, but saddly I wasn't given even a single screw
What if the m.2 ssd nvme that i bought has already pre built heatsink in it? Should i remove them or use the on that comes from msi mobo? My mobo is b550m mortar
What did you end up doing? Now that I'm ready to install mine I have a heatsink that came with my xpg (I had it in my ps5. Upgraded that to 2tb Samsung 980 PRO) and I'm a bit weary about prying this one off for the heatsink that is strapped to the pc now
Thank you for the video! Super helpful, especially the "how not to do it" section. I always learn best by knowing what not to do as well as how to do it :) Much appreciated!
Thank you for the simple, yet informative video! My laptop just has the riser, so I couldn't figure out what I needed to do. Now I see that the SSD sits on top of it and that I'll need to get a screw to hold it down. Mystery solved for me, thanks again!
What if the m.2 drive is long as the heatsink and the screw you need to screw in the m.2 drive is the SAME as the heatsink screw? How to install then?? Companies never think about that or tell you how to solve.
alright thanks MSI, so I'm going to assume the blue plastic coating on the heatsink is to be removed. Maybe you want to clarify that in your quick installation guide or video tutorials; both this one and the 9 year old one referred to in your quick install guide of my b550-a pro.
*_" I'm going to assume the blue plastic coating on the heatsink is to be removed"_* Only a plastic film that covers the thermal pads on the heatsink should be removed. Secondly, the sticker on the SSD should not be removed, it's thermally conductive and doesn't affect cooling in a negative way. If you remove it you actually void your warranty.
with the Lightning Gen 4 on the B650 gaming plus wifi board or other similar, do you suggest NOT having a heat sink already on the M2? For example, do you suggest the samsung 980 Pro WITHOUT heatsink over WITH heatsink?
You should usually check the motherboard box but since you don't have it you should check try to find the dimensions of the screws and just buy them at any regular store
please can you demonstrate how to install a gen 4 nvme in the top slot on the z590i unify? the heatsink will not fit with a m.2 in the top slot and with the included screw that is not removable causes the m.2 drive to bend???
How can someone dislike this video... Amazing. Thanks It is easy but for first time it is always hard specially for people who overthink a lot like me.
After a couple of drilling and welding on my motherboard, I was able to install it. Thanks! P.S. If you can't find a screw, just get a large nail and hammer it on your motherboard.
I installed a m2 on a Z490 Tomahawk and i pressed a little more like waiting for a clicking sound when plugging in a cable to a normal ssd. There was now some kind of plastic cracking (not loud and nothing to see). The M2 works fine. Should I be worried? Can there happen something?
I have msi tomahawk x570 wifi and i want to install secondary m.2 nvme ssd but there is a stand off screw mount in between how do i remove that mount to properly install secondary ssd
Where would I put a second ssd for more memory? I noticed the slot a few inches underneath the graphics card but there's no screw to keep it in place. There's also no cover for it either. What should I do?
Getting the thicker screw to go in to begin with has turned out to be just about impossible on my motherboard (PRIME A320M-K). I just cannot get a grip on the screw with some other component sticking out right next to it, and no screwdriver, not even the one that came with the set of M2 screws I just got in the mail (I guess that one is meant for the inner screw), seems to get any sort of grip on it. So frustrating, I understand how it's supposed to work, but the practicalities are getting in the way.
I recommend doing it when building your pc. I decided to add one as an upgrade and the screw is a nightmare to get in with the mb in the tower and the GPU in the way lol
