      Todd - this is what we do here ;) Welcome! Come back for more. We have literally THOUSANDS of videos to help people get started. I'm so glad you enjoy that part. It's a necessary evil of the hobby, but so much easier than it was years ago...but without a starting point, it's almost insurmountable without help or significant past experience, so I make it a point to walk through these steps.
      I make tediously long videos for this reason, and many are very annoyed by it....glad you've found some value in it Carrie!

      I was thinking of just getting the pneumatic tires, since these foam wheels, while light, seem kinda "bouncy" if you ask me...also the plane refuses to do anything but track PERFECTLY straight...which is tough with such a floaty STOL plane. I'm concerned I'll have a nose over rolling off, or back onto my "Runway" ;)

      If you want to see me review any items from MotionRC, please CALL them and ask them to work with me ;) I've been trying to break into their impenetrable defenses for years to no avail. I wanted to start out with the AL37, and they told me no :(..... They do their own "in house" marketing, and while they do a fantastic job of showcasing their planes, it sure DOESN'T give a real customer experience, in my personal opinion.
      So, after hearing "no" about 5 times, I said, I'm too busy now to get what I have on my plate done, so I'll just work with their biggest competitors - their choice, definitely NOT mine...I'd work with them too any day. Maybe they'll come around when I get to half a million subscribers??? :)
      Either way, theirs your "backstory" - hope you enjoyed that small dose of inside baseball.

    I need to get my wife to watch this video. 36:54 to around 37:50ish pretty much sums it all up. I’m only in this 4 months with 7 planes (taking up a significant corner of the bedroom while I finish converting the garage to a maintenance and storage hangar) and she doesn’t understand where all this is headed. Clearly, I’m in the infant stages of the “small plane now” phase. I know 100% I’ll still be in this hobby 5 years from now, so I might as well show her what the future looks like. lol.

    Greetings from Upstate NY. I feel like I know you, and Megan with her nice filming, after watching so many of your rc video builds & reviews. I appreciate that you include everything in your video's. Even if some feel that they're long, there are many good little tips that may help someone. Even if it's just knowing what to expect, i.e. that we might have trouble with the little nuts lol for the landing gear etc. or trying to find the hole, installing the rudder, (1:35:20) too funny!!! The top hinge gave me a little trouble to, but I knew what to expect from watching you guys. You both are an enjoyable team to watch and listen to!!!
    I just got the Carbon-Z Cub 2.1m plane and am really excited to get it in the air, but may wait for thin ca, just ordered it so I can complete the rudder section. The rudder is on and I have medium ca, but not sure if I should use it or wait. Not sure the medium will flow into the ca hinge joint far enough. What do you think? Would you wait for the thin ca or use the medium? This will be my first plane in many years, and I want to do it right.
    Got busy doing other things over the years and took a break from rc for the most part since around 2007. I've been in rc though since I built my first Associated car and Dumas boat in 1978. Since then I've built a bunch of boats and cars, glo, electric and gas with our son and daughter. Our friends would join us too. We've had many good hours together with our rc models (mostly cars and boats though). I had a modified Raptor 60 gas Heli too. It was big and I loved flying it! Got to where I could even cut the grass inverted if I wanted to lol. I like all rc, but prefer electric for the most part now, as it's powerful, clean and quiet (for the neighbors). We live in the country too, so noise isn't really a factor, as nobody is very close by. We run everything right here from our farm.
    Since the lock down to lower the curve of the virus spread, I got up into the attic and got out some of our rc stuff. We're diving deep...back into rc again... I talked it over with my wife a couple days ago and got the green light to order my wife a radio & plane so we can fly together. I'll build, set up, help her learn to fly it and take care of her plane, batteries and radio. She's never flown a r/c model before, but I feel she'll do fine, we'll take our time and I'll get her very comfortable on the simulator first (I first got one before I built my helicopter, and that's how I learned so quickly how to fly it so well).
    When in TN, my friend Mike (a pro Heli competitor), helped me when I was getting started with Heli's. He recommended highly to get a sim that used my radio & do every maneuver, and every set up change (i.e. changing to inverted v throttle & 30 deg pos and neg pitch for flying inverted etc) on the sim first, to get totally proficient with what ever you are learning, whether doing rolls, flips, engine failure landing etc on the sim first then start easy and do the trick with the model. I never crashed the Heli and I could do anything I wanted with it in less than 6 mos! Most damage I had was a several light tail strikes during landings in gusty wind that I shouldn't have been flying in, but that's it. Nothing big, less than $10 replacing tail rotor gears, just to be sure everything was good. I highly recommend sims for anyone too! The sim made it super easy! If used as a tool, it will save you lots of time and $$ not crashing while stretching your comfort zone boundaries and trying new set-ups. Learning new tricks with a heli can be challenging because the pilot must relearn the move whenever orientation is changed, later it becomes natural.
    I got my wife a Spektrum DX6 6-Channel DSMX Transmitter and a Timber X 1.2m BNF Basic with AS3X and SAFE Select. Hopefully in a few weeks we'll be flying our first flights together! Can't wait!
    Sorry guys this comment is so long. Didn't mean to be writing a little book lol.
    Thanks again Brian and Megan/camera crew, for your awesome video's! Keep up the good work! You and your family stay safe and healthy!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад

      Medium CA will work, but you'll have to work quickly.
      Start by coating both sides of the FIRST HALF of the hinge material on the 3 or 4 hinges, then stick them into the tail section. Coat only the side you want to sick in there first. When you're ready, coat both the other sides of each of the 3 or 4 hinges, and force it in quickly. Thin CA is super easy, since you'll literally just wick the CA into the hinge material after the hinges are in place. Also, thin CA will break a bit easier at the folding point, but regardless of what CA you go with, you'll want to exercise the rudder a bit before you expect to fly.
      Also, you can cheat a bit on the second "half"...just stick the tip into the fuse end tail section...about 1/8"...just so you don't have to line it up with glue on it...then you can coat both sides and push the rest of the way. If you do this, you'll want to have a q-tip or paper towel ready to quickly pull off the excess - QUICKLY - and on both sides. I'm kinda beating a dead horse here, and making it sound really hard, but it's not...just go for it, but be ready so you don't screw up your beauty there.
      I would not wait, but it's not my plane ;) You can tell if it's gonna be secure when you're done...just tug on the rudder. If you screw it up, you'll just have to pull it out and try again. CA will ship off the hinge material. I can say with certitude, if I had a Carbon Z Cub sitting there staring me down, I'd build it ASAP!!!
      We love flying from home. We got away with it in town, but knew that wasn't sustainable. When neighbors started to turn over, I could read the writing on the walls :( Now that we have this place, the only thing stopping us from flying would be our over-reaching, bloated, Federal Government...let's hope they're too busy to be regulating our toys for a few months at least!!!
      I get the long winded thing...have you met me?!??! LOL

    • @thomasjent1431
      @thomasjent1431 4 года назад

      @@BrianPhillipsRC I was going to go ahead and glue it as you suggested, but I noticed two things that I hadn't before. One is that it's medium-thick not medium, and two, when I was about to open it (never opened yet) it says in red letters "To cure properly, this product must be used with PT-28 foam safe kicker." I've never used glue that required a kicker on a model yet. I've seen you use it though, and I will in the future.
      Since I need to wait for the batteries anyway...it's very windy, but nice outside and I have a lot of yard work and other things that needs attending to anyway lol. I have kicker ordered with the glue too, so I'll be set later.
      Thanks for your help Brian! Your reply isn't long winded, I appreciate the detailed instructions, less chance for an uh-oh!

I actually just picked up a Carbon Z cub SS along with a NX8 Transmitter, 5500mah 60c 6s Gens Ace lipo battery and the Spektrum S2100 smart charger at my local hobby store around 3:00pm (CAD) 2021/09/03. This all set me back just over $1,700 CAD after tax. I was watching your video on how to set this thing up. Everything was going great, until next thing I know a hole for where you attack the springs for the landing gear was missing, and the landing gear spring was bent. Very big disappointment for me. I have the receipts, and hopefully the hobby store can fix it up for free, as they sold me a defective product. Thanks, for making this video that I have been watching until 12:00am.

      I hope they will make it right to you. And yes, that's a lot of cash to plop all at once, but when you see her in the air you'll quickly forget the woes of earning all that money. It will soon be overshadowed by the amazing flying experience.
      Don't forget all but about $500-600 of it will be invested in future planes too, so just remember, it's WAY expensive at first, then you get addicted and stop caring how expensive it is - LOL ;) JK

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад +1

      Your EXPO and RATES can be controlled from another switch, separate from the SAFE Select switch that you designated...maybe that would be the easiest option to fix your issue? All you have to do is hold the sticks at the corners and then flip another unused switch back and forth five times (I think that's the right count)...and the controls will "dance" ...then you can change your EXPO and RATES independently.
      All that being said, SAFE will greatly reduce the control authority you have when flying this and any other SAFE Select equipped plane. It's for this reasons that I rarely use SAFE, but if you need it, or want it...I don't mean to fault you. Everyone flying RC is at a slightly different spot ;)

      If they don't take care of you, I'd be amazed, or you're being way too nice :) I get new parts from Horizon Hobby every time there's an issue....but you do have to be somewhat "firm" without being a total jerk, and even the occasionally difficult call with HH will yield results. I got into a pretty good yelling match with one of their reps, and by the time we both cooled down, they were replacing the plane. It's kinda like dealing with any warranty from a decently reputable company, they're gonna try to protect themselves, but this is EXCEPTIONAL service in the RC community ;)

    hi Brian, for your viewers ( as well as you ) I have a serious tip for proper propeller installation on the Cub, and I am posting my upgrade spinner and prop parts so that folks can easily get an aluminum (Chrome) spinner and beechwood prop (very classic) that will match the Carbon Cub SS.
    First, the prop that comes with the model is NOT machined on the back side properly (off center, not deep enough) so that the prop is NOT really tight on the shaft (you will lose the spinner and prop!). The back side of the prop needs to be machined about 5mm in, the diameter of the outside collet shaft... so that when the prop is squeezed between the two serrated plates (to hold the prop) the collet is ALSO actually closing in tight on the motor shaft (words to the wise) !
    Incidentally, I had to machine (hand, dremel tool) the back side of the beechwood prop also to get the aluminum spinner collect to seat properly into the prop.
    Ok, I got the beechwood prop from Xoar International LLC (duh) and I got the aluminum spinner (chrome look) from eflite part no. EFLSP250. The amazon links are posted below:
    www.amazon.com/XOAR-Electric-Airplane-Propeller-Blade/dp/B01AXOX9MS
    www.amazon.com/flite-2-50-Aluminum-Spinner-Collets/dp/B001DJ4XDC
    PS. The Cub SS BL60 motor shaft requires the 6mm collet; spinner comes with both 5mm and 6mm collets.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад

      Yep, I HAD my spinner and prop come off. Luckily, I was able to bring her in for a dead stick landing...5 minutes later, I was up and flying again, but the cowl was damaged when the prop came off ;( Horizon sent me a replacement, which was very much appreciated.
      As for the beach wood prop, it is beautiful!

    I've been subscribed for 4ish years. You just keep getting better and better. I forgot we both taught ourselves to fly right about the same time and with the same plane. I ended up giving my UMX Sport Cub to a friend, so he could learn to fly. I still fly the hell out of the 1.3m Sport Cub and the UMX J3 Cub. I picked up the CZ Cessna about a mouth ago and have been really enjoying that big bird. I couldn't resist the urge any longer and just smashed the buy button on the CZ Cub, can't wait!

As for the Freewing 64mm - TOTALLY AGREE - and haven't flown it again, and probably won't now that I have a MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better one. (Sorry, I think I forgot a few "much'es"). This plane is like 100 times more fun and easy to fly and powerful than the Freewing...which is why I NEED Eflite to release the F-14 they haven't been talking about [ever] so I can be satisfied, and will never need another plane (lie)... LOL
      P.S. I have been working on comments for TWO days now, and I'm reminded, as we get a new "batch" of subscribers and a load of views from likely RUclips recommendations, how we always get a lot of pricks and dick holes that I get to deal with. I had to block THREE in one day - WTF! So very nice to have a long time subscriber make a kind remark - Thanks! It helps that you have been around to see the improvements we've worked out over the years, and have an appreciation for them...but some of these kids are such little bitches. If I talked like this to another kid, back when I was their age, I would have put on my ass...now they're just keyboard warriors, and the future LOSERS of society, unfortunately.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Unfiltered Brian is awesome! I hear you though! I'm in my mid 40's and don't have time for that shit. I'm also really into RC Crawlers. I know that the RC Hobby in general needs new people to survive, but it just seems that the more RTR ground based vehicles, or SAFE equipped air vehicles that come out, the more of the wrong kind of people get into the hobby. Before it used to be, "I just did a bad landing and broke my gear. I should really practice more." Now it's like, "These landing gear suck!" The same kind of thing happens in the Crawling world, but replace gear with axle housings. They use it in a way or at higher speeds than what it was designed for and them blame the manufacture when something breaks. Shit's crazy. Keep doing your thing!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, totally agree. It's too bad. We need to get as many people into this hobby as possible to make three things happen...
      1) Drive down the price
      2) Improve the technology
      3) Build a larger group to keep representation against an ever-growing government bureaucracy that wants to inject itself into every aspect of our lives!!!
      ...it's totally disgusting that the last item needs to be on there, but it DOES - we need to have a larger collective voice, and presence as we area forced to lobby to keep freedoms like the ability to fly a plane for enjoyment.

      You click the scroll wheel and go down to telemetry, and click on AUTO-Config, but it should have already done that when you bound your plane.

    Which switch do you usually use for retracts if you also have safe select set up? i.e. Viper.
    I'm not a pincer either. I like thumbs.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад

      I use A for gear, then I divert SAFE Select to the F key, straight up from the throttle stick (right???)
      As for my layout, I do B for flaps, and always do it as close to the same as I can. My brain can only handle small and completely necessary changes ;)

    So on the landing gear bolt and nut but the bolt from the back so the nut is facing towards the front that way you can use the allen wrench pretty common sense.

      Would you please put your thought(s) into a sentence or a group of sentences? I can't understand what you're saying, since there isn't any punctuation.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC lmao well if you need punctuation .. then i rest my case commen sense is out of the window. Why would you. Face the bolt towards the center of the landing gear?? Instead of out on the open end where you can use the allen key🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️. I've been flying 14 plus years and have 3 turbine jets and 2 of the carbon cubs and hand full of other planes.

    You should bind your airplane first before attaching the push rods to the horns that way the servos will balance out beforehand and you will have proper alignment

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад

      I'm not sure what you're talking about. They (speaking of control surface positions) will go wherever they go, regardless of when you bind the plane. Once you've got the radio system setup and bound, then you'll see where things end up.
      Maybe I misunderstood your comment?

    hi Brian, got an idea for you, you might think of doing a receiver upgrade video for the Cub SS using say the AR637T (6) chn receiver with telemetry; if you do this for Spektrum, you might even get a free receiver out of it.
    I have the DX8 controller, which shipped with firmware 2.0; telemetry requires updating to firmware 2.05 and then of course binding to a telemetry receiver like the AR637. So the video idea would be the firmware update, receiver installation, and controller model copy and tweak from "Cub SS AR636" to "Cub SS AR637T" and then cover the telemetry config options in the transmitter|controller.
    ... just an idea; I got it figured out, but it took me a couple of hours of study and experimenting.
    PS. my beechwood prop came (beauty) 16x7 gorgeous!
    PSS. still looking for a chrome spinner I like....

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад +1

      I want to see the prop! I bet it's BEAUTIFUL!!!
      As for the video about upgrading the Rx...there would be WAY too much swearing, and throwing things, possibly violence (against the computer, or myself) ...so, no thanks ;)
      ...but seriously, would be a great 4-5 hours video, but my patience, as you know is very wide and deep for these planes, but I can only handle so much ;)

    Hi Brian. My CZC ailerons flip to the left when I test out failsafe mode. According to my Spektrum programmer app and cable the failsafes are correctly set to SAFE mode for aileron, elevator and rudder, and HOLD for the others. It's like the plane will spiral to the left if it loses TX. Did yours do this too?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад

      I never tested it, but sounds like you have SAFE programmed in to a switch that might not have been in the correct condition to turn ON when the FAILSAFE activates. Can you double check on this.

      Your NX10 will be PREFECT for every plane you get in the next 5-10 years!!!

    Hi Brian what do you think about the power plant on the carbon z- 60 amp esc- is that a little low with 6s? How are the servos? Thanks! Have you heard of any issues with servos or motor or esc?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад

      It's good - I've never had any issues, and my servos have been great, BUTTTTTT....many people fly the CRAP out of their Carbon Z Cub, and they pay the price for it ;) I'm pretty nice to it, except for hitting power lines and keeping flying, and losing props while flying, and keep flying, and other non-sense....maybe I'm also no "nice" to mine....
      Oh well, still running STRONG ;)

    Did you adjust the rudder during build? I experience that my plane hasn’t the same (wide) movement in the rudder, despite following build instructions. Using a DX8 Gen2 transmitter, fyi, with 2.05 firmware on it.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад +1

      If I don't show it, then I didn't do it...but I honestly can't remember. If you want more rudder, move the clevis to the inside hole on the rudder, just know that you might see some oscillation at very top end of speed range due to AS3X slightly over-correcting...BUT I don't see mine doing it.

    Brian, you said you'd have alot of problems on the adapter if you used solid core wire. Just wondering what those problems might be.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад

      For starters, you wouldn't be able to get solder to hold it, since there's be a very small amount of surface area for the solder to contact, in comparison to a fine multi strand wire. Additionally, it would be STIFF!!! You could maybe use it for a straight piece, but you'd have to overcome the solder surface area issue.

    What about when the plane is inverted the pressure on the clevis pins and struts is compression? That is why you have jury struts to stop the main struts from bending. Also when the plane is in negative g's no strength in the struts. Re; inverted loops etc.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад

      I understand what you're saying, but not exactly sure if this is a question or a comment.
      The wings are VERY strong. To be totally honest, I've never given it a second thought.
      My only issue with this plane, to date, is that the prop came off in flight!!! I landed without incident....dead stick, as expected. My father-in-law watched the prop and spinner come down, and I got it and put it back on, tightened everything and was flying in like 5-10 minutes. This was kinda "my bad" for not noticing the collet had loosened, but kinda a HH issue in that it wouldn't have loosened that quickly, if you ask me...BUT I was hammer-heading the plane when it happened, and only very minor damage to the cowling...which Horizon replace for me at no cost - way to go horizon!...so I guess, lesson learned.
      I LOVE this plane. It's a solid platform. The only thing I don't like is the fact that you kinda have to load the lipo in the "chop zone"...but they did install a switch, but the switch in also in the "chop zone" - LOL....otherwise, I love the plane. In fact, my only complaint is that it's TOO easy to fly - LOL :)

      @@BrianPhillipsRC I will have to disassemble the wings from the fuse, but I've got all kinds of room, even for a couple of giant scale planes ( planning on the Cessna too ).
      By the by, I picked up a telemetry receiver that will match nicely to my DX8 ( or your DX18 ) and DOES NOT need a separate telemetry module (just the receiver). So my Cub SS is getting that after I check out the maiden flight characteristics on the AR636.

    Which 6S pack is best 30C, 50C or 100C? Ive had a lot of puffing issues in the past and my packs were warm after flights. Im guessing that means my C rating wasnt high enough.
