    I usually don't watch long videos because I have gotten bored with some that's been even 45 long. I really enjoyed watching my first long video from Brian. Narration, information and build of this excellent model was the best I have ever seen on RUclips. My ultimate goal is to some day order this Piper Cherokee after I improve my skills on the Park Flyer I have. Back in the 60's I flew glow engine control line. I thought they were awesome. I love and enjoy you're videos, so keep up the great work.

      Awesome! Thank you! Very glad you're considering this plane, but to be honest, you could do it now, if you can fly a park flyer. This beauty is such an amazing and just fantastic flying machine. You will love it.
      Good luck as you work out your time frame, and enjoy the progression! If you can fly glow, you can fly these ;)

    Seriously, I have been building and flying since 1986. I was taught by a B-17 gunner and a P-40 pilot that flew in WW2. I flew with stuff people can't imagine today. 72 ghz. You just never knew when someone would turn on without checking for the channel and your hard work would die a horrible death. Best we had was duel rates and later some mixing but you flew by the seat of your pants. You had to be good to stay airborne.
    But here I am 70 years old and still flying but we have all this cool tech. Tech that you and your great instruction( and the entertaining funny stuff that makes me crack up) has helped me become a good setup person with a DX radio, this plane, and many others you have covered.
    Your flying is good too. You're darn good and you have big ones. But you have the humility to show when you screw up. Like the F-15(I also have, mine is still cherry) hitting the tree. I like the way you repaired it and got back on the horse and flew her socks off.
    I'm a veteran of the movie industry. You'd be amazed of where I've been. You just never know who's watching. Yes I have a channel too full of weird shit and RC airplanes, Slot cars, RC cars, and even RC submarines. The not so weird shit.
    Ok I'll shut the hell up but I just wanted to say thankyou to you and your wife for the entertaining, super helpful videos.
    You two rock!
    Steve Neill

      Thanks Steve! Glad you're here with us. Sounds like you had to learn to fly "the hard way" :) I would have been so pissed if some guy powered up and started controlling my plane, but I heard stories of people with CB's just crashing models for FUN!?!??! What kind of psychopath does these things?!??!? Anyway, glad you're in our audience, and cool that you're into movie magic! Glad you enjoy our modest footage here, and you certainly "GET IT" when it comes to all the hard work and energy that goes into making even the simplest videos.
      Thanks for the comment, and glad you're enjoying our stuff too.
      P.S. As for being "humble enough to share" - I know that the knock to my pride will be far outweighed by the help I can share with some kid who just had his or her dreams shattered after hitting a light pole. Plus, fixing this crap is just PART of it...if you can't fix it, you won't be flying too long ;)
      Thanks for noticing this, and for the mention ;) There are some trolls out there who think I'm the most self serving human that's ever lived...which is very disappointing...but also humorous all at the same time ;) Gotta love arriving at a level where you can claim to have "haters" - amazing!!! Anyway, now that you got a laugh at my expense (again) I'll leave you back to your own devices...yes, your RC planes and movie props ;)

      @@BrianPhillipsRCBrian we had a guy that used to come to our field and sit in his car with radios on different channels. He would talk to you first, comment on your plane (you had just built from a box of wood) and see what channel you were on. He'd go back to the car and wait for you to maiden. He'd let you get one lap around the field, turn on his radio and send you straight down. It took time for us to figure this out but we did and he was arrested. He was a flyer too. Probably now one of your hater trolls and mine. They are the type. But 2.4 put a stop to that for good. People seem to hate you more if you're successful and know your shit. They hate that. And you certainly know your shit! ;) Your attention to details is outstanding and helpful.

      @@SteveNeill Had the same thing happen at one of my fields many years ago, too. But, this was with a "dial a crash" PCM synthesized radio that was new at the time where you could select a channel right on the TX. He used the Futaba version and he got caught and arrested, too. He crashed enough dollar value to get charged with felony destruction of property. He should have gotten reckless endangerment, too, since those planes went out of control and could crash anywhere.

    Hello Brian, another great video with all you need to know! Just put my Cherokee together following your video. Only confusion I have is the proper final adjusted position of the horizonal stab. Difficult to see exactly where you set it while you were out on the runway. Couldn't find anything on the subject in the manual that came with the plane or the manual on Horizon. 1:08:20 Thank you for showing the collet and how it holds the prop on. Being new, I didn't know that or how to loosen it if it was too tight. Worth the price of admission right there. Also the nose wheel... already done and nice to know that there were un-needed instructions. The stabilizer was easy after watching your build. And one last thing. I wanted the antennae even though it wasn't really necessary. Thanks for showing that. I love you guys. It's a beautiful day but there's just too much wind for a maiden. Probably tomorrow. 🤞♥

    Nice video, very helpful as always. Just want to highlight to viewers that HH moved the location and orientation of the AR631 receiver. If you watch old build videos for prior version, the receiver used to be mounted on the ledge of the fuselage with the antennae facing forward, as shown on page 11 of the manual. Do not remount the receiver to match the manual unless you want to maiden nose first into a corn field 😩

    Hello Brian, First. I really appreciate your very long and detailed video builds. I have been doing RC for decades, but have been inactive for several years. I have picked up several great building tips from you on the foam models and setting up the new computer radios. I especially liked your detailed explanation of forward programming. Thank You!
    Apparently I missed in this video, where you set the neutral stabilator position when setting up your radio to the model. I could not find how to do this in the manual, so I guess, and guessed wrong!
    My maiden flight did not go well, as I fly off of narrow rocky dirt roads here in the high desert. The nose wheel hit a rock and stripped the rudder servo, and I did not have the stabilator correctly aligned. I had to do a full slip approach to keep the plane level, but doing so, I fell short of my runway, landing in a creosote bush.
    I replaced the servo and installed a Dubro servo saver. In another RUclips video, they showed where a dent is located on both sides in the rear of the fuselage where you are suppose to align the leading edge of the stabilator. I could not find this in the manual. This is where I set mine, but would you verify this is correct before I attempt a second flight?
    Again, thank you for doing such long and detailed videos!
    Regards.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад +1

      I understand your question, and NO, I don't think we talked about it, mostly because we left it right were it was.
      I just looked at mine...there is a straight line pressed into the foam where the stabilator should point neutrally. It's on BOTH sides, and had a CIRCLE just in front of it. You might need to press the decals down HARD to see it.
      Get it in the middle, after confirming OUT OF SAFE, that your servo is centered....then here's my tips...
      1) Make sure you're 100% sure you're centered in the CG range. This will allow you TONS of flexibility with elevator authority.
      2) Make sure you're setup so you can be OUT of SAFE, even if you still use it from time to time. This will help with MORE throw when you're landing and taking off.
      3) Don't bother with servo savers in the future...they won't save your servos in a plane applicaiton, in my experience. They will HELP on cars and trucks, but that's a much different application.
      4) You might need a plane with BIGGER tires or you might need to modify this beauty to accommodate your road.
      Good luck! You know how hard it was years ago, and now it's just a matter of working back through the learning curve to get back in the saddle, then you'll be a better pilot than me, for sure!

    • @ralphfrasier2079
      @ralphfrasier2079 3 года назад

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Thank you sir for taking the time to reply!
      I will double check my CG, and verify the stabilator is centered with the radio out of safe (mostly never use it) with the controls and trims centered.
      I generally only fly tail dragger's with large soft wheels or little UMX planes at this flying site, but thought the Cherokee could handle it.
      Always look forward to your videos!
      Regards.

I added extreme-scale detail which you can do to this without worrying about it being too fragile or affecting flight performance - so much do I love it that although I designed the Seneca mod to be removable and the original nose goes back on, I am going to get another stock Cherokee and keep it stock.

First of all when you were guessing who was the manufacturer Piper was correct FYI all pipers are low wing A/C and Cessna's are high wing Low or high wing A/C have their advantages and disadvantages Secondly, I worked for a FAA licensed propeller repair facility After smoothing the propeller surfaces we would balance the prop just like you did our balancing room was completely free of any air drafts I noticed in your video that you had a ceiling fan on. That causes air currents that affect the prop. Eventually you just end up chasing your tail Loved your video Im a new RC pilot and love the flaps and lights as well as the performance. However, unlike you, I probably wont wait 2 years LOL Gary

    Good morning Brian, I tried buying the plane from your link but they were on back order so I found a hobby shop by my house that had one so I went and purchased it from them I usually purchased things from your link. “ sorry about that” but anyhow I went through the building exactly the way you did but in the radio set up did everything exactly right except for I can’t get my plane out of safe mode I have an NX8. I need help.
    p/s. I even purchased a prop balancer very cool so now I’m going to balance all the props and all my planes. 😉

      Template replay, forgive me...
      You CAN, and will after you follow these steps - I've had this comment from probably 50 or more, just as adamant as you, and they got theirs working ;)
      Step 1) Make sure you're BOUND with SAFE SELECT ON. If you're NOT 100% sure - DO IT AGAIN, and make sure the surfaces "Dance" through the mix TWICE at power up...NOT ONCE...Once means you're in AS3X only mode.
      Step 2) Go to MONITOR MODE, and watch the switch change the condition of the channel you THINK is assigned to the SWITCH YOU WANT TO USE - If it doesn't change state, go to System Setup and make the Channel Assignment to that switch. Now exit the menu and verify the changes took in Monitor Mode.
      Step 3) Now that you're 100% sure you're BOUND in SAFE Select, and you have an operational switch for channel (I think 5-8) assigned, go ahead and pull both sticks DOWN and IN, and then toggle the switch to a count to 10 (NOT 5)....most people don't count a FULL CYCLE of the switch...so they never get to 5 full back and forth cycles... On step 9 of 10, you'll see the surfaces twitch, and on 10 of 10 they'll "recenter" again.
      Here's PROBABLY what you're doing wrong...it's a super easy mistake to make, and you'll immediately get it if you are doing this wrong...
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 1
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 2
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 3
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 4
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 5
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 6
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 7
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 8
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 9
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 10
      When Horizon Hobby wrote those instructions they said 5 times, so this is what they meant, but it's confusing if not elaborated upon...
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 0
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 1
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 1
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 2
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 2
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 3
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 3
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 4
      Switch Up to Switch Down = 4
      Switch Down to Switch Up = 5
      ...pretty confusing, right??!?!?
      Step 4) The ONLY issue that might prevent this all from working is that your sticks are WAY out of calibration... if so, the Tx might not realize you're in the Lower Left or Lower Right position, thus preventing the designation when you hit flip 10... so if this ends up being the case, which I highly doubt, then you need to calibrate your sticks and then follow back from step 2 maybe.
      Good luck - you can do it!

    I have a dumb question. This is my second plane. First was the carbon Cub S2. 1.3. Question is this. When I bind in SAFE then assign a switch (3 position like on Carbon Cub), when I select SAFE off am I still in AS3X? I don’t see the control surfaces moving when I rock the plane.
    Great channel and awesome videos.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 года назад

      Great quesiton, NOT DUMB - AS3X is the basis of SAFE, and you can actually CHOOSE now, but it's as a rule, ON if you're in SAFE....so it's SAFE (and AS3X), OFF, and AS3X only, as I have configured many PNP's, BUT with BNF you don't have such flexibility...so you're likely seeing AS3X, AS3X, and SAFE (not-withstanding switch positions)

    Hey Brian what’s up, hope you’ and your sidekick are well, you might want to grab a beer before reading this as it’s somewhat verbose 😉Really enjoy your channel, be nice to to live near you, grab a beer and learn from you while enjoying RC.
    Man II was bitten with the RC bug bad a few years ago at the begging of the pandemic and my addiction has led me to become immortal ( given your wit I thought you’d enjoy that). Anyway I’ve been mostly trying to master helis (y’a I know I’m somewhat of a masochist) and thought why not enjoy a plane and actually be able to relax, it’s been awhile . Different world right , you can actually get a relaxing effect from the hobby and with my basic acrobatics I can fake being halfway good, I think flying a plane came a bit easy for me from the start ,used to be a daredevil with my kites and the UMX Ultrix is my favourite of all time and dollar for dollar given the most enjoyment vs sorrow and expense.
    So I got the Cherokee, very largely as a result of this video. Kudos man, Horizon and Eflite owe you one.
    So Il preface this by saying that my by lack of experience “building ” these things, I was able to make an adventure of it. Wrong screws for landing gear and wings, horizontal stabilizer put on the wrong way (thanks a ton for clearing that up, I knew it just felt way wrong but as you said it’s ridiculously ambiguous).
    So I’m down to two issues. One is I don’t find the radio set up instructions that good being used to helis and I can’t for the life of me assign a safe switch despite toggling my B switch forever. Am I missing something? Do you have to assign a channel or something before hand, flight modes? Lastly, I’m definitely sure you understand, it’s a sad night in my rc life. After all of this I brought her out to the field today at dusk only to have the prop fly off before she even left the ground. I’ve watched the prop part of the video more than once and I’m puzzled by what I could have went wrong. Could it it just wasn’t tight enough? It doesn’t look like I put it on wrong? Sure seemed tight for the maiden yesterday. Do you have to tighten it every time? The part the assembly that tightens around the shaft (the one you tried to bend ) are well bent , I fooled around pliers trying to get the spaces right but I’m not sure if I I need a new assembly or is it good if I can tightening it again (tomorrow, it’s outside in the trunk tonight).
    Finally regarding the mechanical elevator trim , you loosened the screw but the trim buttons still move the elevator? Do you return the trims to center after tightening the screw? Would you do the same after any mechanical adjustment, clevis, plliers on small planes etc?
    Lot of questions I know but I’d really appreciate your thoughts on each. Thanks ahead of time and thanks for your channel, it’s a great and entertaining resource. Cheers 🍻

      You have to use FORWARD PROGRAMMING now for SAFE Select Switch Designations. Sorry, that changed since we got this one...hence your confusion (not you, it was a legit change). Jump over to the Commander mPd 1.3m and it'll show you how to do that par (or the Cirrus SR22T, same thing).
      Sometimes when I'm building, I'll start to torque down the prop and get side-tracked. I had the prop come off my Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m - that was an exciting all of a sudden dead stick landing, but it was mostly uneventful. I would just get it tighter on your second go-around. The Aluminum CAN be marred to the point where it won't move...it almost feels like it welded together!!! I've done it before...but usually can get them to pry off...but always with some damage!!!
      You can make a Mechanical trim AFTER you've flown it once, and only if you see something like 1/4 or better off center...but YEAH, it'll work even with trim all the way down OR up...but don't get yourself hemmed into a corner by doing that. Just when you land, make the adjustment.... ALSO, if you find you're making a huge elevator trim...check the CG again...did your battery shift? ....did your elevator feel WEEK (nose heavy) or super touchy (tail heavy) ....was it right in the first place? ...do you need a bigger battery? ....add nose weight / tail weight??? Answer these IF you have a ton of trim.
      So much to ask and answer so I'll leave it at this, since it's real late here, and just waiting for some food to get prepared (1:33 AM Monday morning...life of an RC influencer - it's not all fun and game (There is that though)...it's actually loads of work).
      Thanks for being here with us, and hope I didn't miss anything for you.

      Not much class in dissing the RC Salylors, or your competition in general. It’s never a good look and this fact is well known by anyone in business or even among many who aren’t. As far as having real jobs, it must be nice to get your RC products for free and looking at your house and property it doesn’t look like you worry too much about the end of the month, like some of your viewers likely do. Also I don’t know who has the proclivity to watch three hour videos, many of which are largely comprised of nonsensical blabber. Love your flying. Love the look of the plane, especially with the lights! I've been curious about "dead" battery. So it looks like you lose motor thrust but you still have control surfaces? I know it's not good for the battery but it's pretty doable. My glow engines have left me dead sticking so many times it's not even a problem if I still have control surfaces.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Год назад

      Not really super close in comparison. Also, they offered a 1.1m F4U forever ago, and now the 1.2m is WAY better. The Cherokee is way simpler to fly, and less fast, but the F4U is a warbird with lots of p-factor, and if you have the NEWEST one, it'll come equipped with Thrust Reverse, should you decide to activate it....Cherokee, not so much, but won't need it, since it's a slower plane, in general, but a WONDER to fly, especially low and slow. I LOVE BOTH!

    I stripped out my rudder/nose wheel servo, on my first outing. Also broke the scissor assembly between the fuse and the wheel.
    Landing on a grass field but it seems like the nose wheel assembly is pretty darn delicate. It's no Twin Timber! Lol
    I ordered another servo because I think the plastic gears inside stripped. And I also think the servo is crap, so I have a metal gear servo on the way. Also that scissor assembly on the nose gear is really vulnerable and has broken. I don't know why, but what seems like the most fragile parts of the plane is not available for replacement. I'm not spending $35 for the entire landing gear set just to get a 75 cent part. I would trade away the spring part of the nose gear for something with a traditional solid purchase point.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Год назад +1

    Hey Brian I know this video is 7months old but I have bin flying for two years started out with mini apprentice then jumped to a jet 🙉 lord knows it don’t leave the hanger but I absolutely love this plane and I have bin waiting for HH to restock so I am getting this plane I can’t wait. My question is could give me suggestions as to how big of a battery I could go up for this plane thanks
    Ps I am a new channel subscriber love your videos keep up the great work

      Thanks, and welcome! As for HOW big a battery. Probably 4000mAh would be about as big as I'd squeeze into this bird....but I'd rather fly her light and still have suitably long flight times.

    Hello Brian, I know you get loaded with comments, definitely nice to see you reply, I understand if you don't, but I'm not seeing the comment in the list, We know the new sr22 is coming out and for the hell of it I hit the preorder button. Have not had the old one. What would you say between the 2 airplanes bottom line? Having your experience? I'm also tempted on the trojan, looks super fun, I just don't know what I want next :). Most importantly though comment solely on the Cherokee and the Cirrus. Very hard to find a straight up bottom line distinction between the two. (I have searched everything I could).

      Tough call. I have had both the V1 SR22T, and of course, this, the Cherokee and I can say the unpopular thing of the day...I really LOVE the Cherokee ;) Also, keep in mind, this Cherokee is a BIT narrower, at 1.3m, while the SR22T is about 1.5m...so same size class, but wings just happen to be different lengths.
      As for the SR22T V2 - I hope it's amazing, and it probably will be, but I LOVE this Cherokee. It'll fly slower, and land easier than the SR22T V2 when it comes...
      The better way to answer between the two...better to BETWEEN THE TWO - much more fun with two ;)

      Cirrus SR22T bit.ly/3r7ASe0

    Brian, do you recommend changing that EC3 connecter to a female IC3, and if so would you on solder it and re solder the IC3 on the ESC? Great Video Guy's watched the whole thing! Thanks in advance Brian! 👋👍😃

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Год назад

      Nope, definatelly don't change it from EC3 to IC3 unless you get a smart ESC upgrade...then it'll come equipped already from what I understand... IC3 and EC3 are ACTUALLY compatible, even though the IC3 had the SMART Data Pin (gray wire and flat pin in the middle), while the EC3 allows space for it to be "floating".
      XT60 (at device/aircraft end) is NOT technically compatible with IC3/EC3 (at battery end), but they DO work together with some effort, since the pins and sockets are the correct size...and ironically enough, the SMART Data Pin also misses in the middle too ;)

      I'd go with the FIRST one, if you like it ;)

    Nice plane just got one just be careful tightening the prop on the adapter will break if you over tighten it

    Great flying, so scale! I was wondering if you have ever thought about getting one of the 800mm warbirds from fms, every other video is not as in depth as your videos and the camera angles kinda suck on them! It would be really cool to see the Brian Phillips treatment on them, with the amazing camera work! Just a suggestion, thanks

    Brian, I purchased this model online and it arrived in good condition. After assembly I noticed the elevator seemed a bit loose, I checked the proper technique for installing the elevator and secured the 2 screws internally and the 3 to secure tail cap. The elevator moves a little, I've flown the plane and it flies fine just a loose elevator. Is this normal???

      There can be a little bit of play, but mine didn't make me think twice...wonder if you had a special issue? I LOVE this plane! I can fly it for hours and not even give it a second thought.

    Hi Brian, Which one would you recommend cheroke or the new timber. I know these are 2 diff models and completely flies different as well but if you can only choose 1 which one would you choose?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад +1

      I love the Timber, but the Cherokee is so much more of a "scale" plane. The trouble is, the Timber is such a great value, and the Cherokee is so beautiful...
      Can't I just say BOTH?!?!?!
      Sorry - I know you want an answer, but I like them both for such different reasons!!!
