I just watched a video by zeeree, one of the few hockey sports card guys I've ever watched, and he got destroyed in an in person PSA submission. It's worth a watch because some of the grades had me scratching my head. Grading has become gambling of late, which bothers me quite a bit.
almost like they tightened their belts to curb pop counts. speaking of gambling, maybe they are considering inflation with the surge of degen breakers, preventing them from flooding the market with 10’s. Either way in this grading climate, I’m having a hard time sending
I don't understand why PSA is so popular with collectors. If you own a high end autograph card, having it in a PSA case really doesn't make much sense. Autographs are known to fade, and PSA cases have the least amount of UV protection. None of the three companies claim UV protection but a PSA case will block about 14% UV compared to over 50% for Beckett. Ultra Pro claim that their one touch cases have UV protection. If you've seen some old autographs, you know they can start to fade. It's surprising that collectors that are so into gem mint 10s wouldn't care so much about protecting their autographs. If you bought a Babe Ruth autographed baseball, wouldn't you want to put it in a UV case so it doesn't fade anymore than it already has? I bet a lot of the colors on those old vintage cards would be a lot brighter if they were kept under UV from instead of being expised for 100 years of light. think it's also pretty bad that PSA has the lowest UV protection of the three companies, but I guess it doesn't matter. Collectors go with PSA because everyone else is doing it,so that gives the highest resale value. I own a lot of PSA btw
Really well done Scottie. I hope in near future you and the other guys at Spitballin' give your two cents about each grading company. Here is a couple of thoughts of why I use each one. For PC cards, I have really like CGC. Can't beat the cost or the slab. 90s Refractors, insert cards, and I really like how they grade the Auto now on the front of the card and don't charge you. PSA is really for re-sale value, although I do use them with PC cards. Will throw in a few for PC and sell the rest to pay from my PC cards. I think they have gotten more consistent with their grading, but tougher at the same time, especially when getting shipping back from NJ. Interested to hear anyone else's thoughts. SGC is the go-to for vintage and I have actually had good luck with thicker cards as well. I like that they grade the auto if it is a 10, but if the card is not a 10, I do not like the look at all. I wish they would just make the auto grade smaller or put it on the back. (Copy what CGC does, since after all, they copied their grading scale). I really do not have a need for BGS. I will be the slab if I like the card, but have zero plans to ever grade with them. The sub-grades can be confusing and I do not like the sleeve at all. I think it takes away from the presentation of the card. Just my thoughts. Thanks for listening. Until next time.....
Great video…. Well thought out… Big fan of CGC because of the crystal clear slabs which can really make the card display nicely… strict grading as well. ✊
I only use SGC. I’d have to have a Jordan rookie or something to that effect to send to PSA if reselling. Pricing and turnaround is a huge plus for me. I do buy PSA slabs and get most of them pretty cheap, especially 9s. Thanks for sharing!
Great presentation. I have about 1500 graded cards, and since 97% are PSA, I gotta stick with them. I have about 6-7 BGS, maybe 10 SGC, snd and a handful of BVG, CSG, CGC, and Gem Mint. I bought the Gems and BVGs to crack and submit to PSA, but in 2019 I sent some beautiful 60s cards that all came back with 4-6 grades. Still, not sure why to this date. I expected 7-8 grades, but, well you know…
This is such great information, I started to submit on my own, and I alway was on the fence about pricing and what fits my needs/wants this was good moving forward on submitting always great content 👍🏾👍🏾
I don’t believe I heard you speak about CGC and their JSA partnership which I think is huge since I believe JSA has a long historical reputation of autograph authentication
Psa is just way too expensive for what they do and it takes forever. In my opinion it's only worthwhile for cards that are of high value. That being said, great information in the video. Thanks Scott.
I grade PSA for cards I'm looking to sell or trade, BGS for PC stuff. What still baffles me is BGS will still take the full amount of time to grade your card even though they grade 20X less than PSA. I'll normally get my cards back in half the stated time from PSA. I go to SGC if I have a card with flaws.
I feel TAG Slabs are the best I use them for my pc. If the resale value was close to PSA, I would submit everything to them, but the hobby holds PSA as a premium, and I doubt that I’ll ever change. And the craziest thing about grading is most people cannot see the difference between a 10 and a 9 but yet will pay 3-5 times more for the card that just has a 10 grade . You can buy a 9 most times for less than the raw card.
Yo. right on. TAG knocks out any of these companies. I won't use any other company. They have the best reports, ranking and appearance of slabs. PSA, SGC are the junk common graders, TAG is first class. Thanks for your post.
I liked TAG when they came out, did a submission with them, A+ work, but now they ruined the whole thing by offering a low tier grading option, and increasing pricing of the normal service. I mean when they started calling it X and C and G grading or whatever letters they use, that's when I decided to not grade with them for the time being since it's confusing and not doing the full grading service is a joke
I actually use cgc for my cards because i figured if this is the company that is the leader of grading 50+ year old comics that require a lot more input and observation, then sports cards should be easy for them
I’m one of the odd ducks. I’ve been strictly using CSG/CGC since early in their life. While they have had their fare share of missteps, I’m sticking with them. Fingers crossed their slabbed values go up and are more on par with the industry leaders.
Asthetically, I like SGC the most. Quality of the case goes to PSA for me. Beckett has a nostalgia place for me, but I've had way too many issues with their service, including cards put upside down in a case! SGC just isn't that different for me to want to use them. My Dark Horse is TAG grading. I like their look and the super sensitive grading system realizes that there is no such thing as perfection, just better and better.
So I sent my 89 UD Griffey to CGC. I knew it was a little off center, but other than that it looked really good. It came back a 7. Is this something I could re-submit to PSA? I’m no grading pro & maybe I missed something.
To me there's 2 things that make up a grading company I would use, how the slab looks and how the grading is calculated. For me, SGC and CGC just look cheap, and just don't look good. Then I love PSA grading scale for all my mid end cards that are like SP's, numbered, case hits, etc because the minamilistic design and grade makes for a good slab to me. Then I love using BGS for higher end cards, or cards that are mid end and look perfect as the sub grades just make it look fancier and the extra grades make a good quality card mean something, whereas the others a 10 has so much wiggle room it doesn't mean quite as much as each beckett grade does.
i've bought cards from every grading company and I like TAG the most, the slabs are super clear and i honestly like the idea of Skynet grading my cards, but they're very limited on what they grade right now. No diecut, relic or acetate and nothing thicker than 50pt. I'm passing on them until they grade everything. I love BGS subgrades and there is something nice about having a patch card in a super heavy and thick case. It just feels premium. But they're going downhill so fast I'm scared to grade with them. How long can they keep the doors open? SGC works great for white border vintage cards but I can't stand the big blocky font on their flips. It's just ugly. CGC might be my new favorite with their low prices and great looking slab. I'll probably send in a bunch of my PC cards next year. PSA just makes me mad. Upcharges, unimpressive slab, $1 and $1,000,000 cards in the same slab is kinda lame, no subgrades but I can't argue against the value they command. I just with other companies would get the same respect, although getting a BGS 9.5 for a third the price of a PSA 10 is nice.
I get that argument. Sometimes it is nice to be able to touch the card. Regardless, one thing I appreciate about any of the grading companies is just the protection on the card. Thanks for watching!
Why is there not an industry standard for the grading of ALL cards? Pricing I get, but what and how a card is being graded should be standard. Your thoughts?
sgc grades hard on pokemon. thats great news for me. i sent in a bunch of pokemon, most of them returned 10s.. i must have a sharp eye for grading. now to send a few sports cards to psa. (as much as i hate psa, i do love money tho )
I use CGC almost exclusively for all of my sports cards. I find their grading to be more reliable than PSA, especially in centering. Some of PSA's centering evaluations are suspect, especially when they use the miscut (MC) designation. CGC really is a no-brainer for the cost and quality and quicker turn-around. PSA slabs feel flimsy in comparison and you have to wait months to receive your cards and it costs more. Makes no sense why folks still use PSA, except for their resale value. I buy almost exclusively CGC/CSG slabs due to their lower cost and just better quality. Hopefully, people will realize that PSA is a Datsun and CGC is a Toyota.
I've heard second hand that only certain graders at BGS can give out a Black Label - and that each "certified" grader at BGS is only allowed to award one card per month with a Black Label. If that's true (suspect it is) just goes to show you what racket that concept is. Speaking specifically about "Black Label" not grading as a whole.
Only thing I'd add: Definition of slabs vs. flips. Slabs are the physicality of the graded card. Flip is the appearance and design. The SGC black tuxedo - the flip - looks great. Appearance is great. The slab is terrible. You can pop cards right of of the SGC with virtually little damage or effort (and in many cases, pop it right back together). The CGC slab is unbreakable. Just some side thoughts.
16:46 Hold on!? I did not realize that PSA wouldn't REGRADE a numbered card that's been previously graded!? How many times do people suggest to get a card regarded if you thought it deserves a higher grade, but apparently they won't even regrade it because of the serialized number? 🤔I had no idea they do that! Can someone please enlighten me, because I don't seem to comprehend!? 🤷
@christopherlangner5008 I did not know that! It makes sense because it's pretty easy to tell, but grading is pretty subjective, so I thought maybe they'd let it slide! lol 🤷 So 1/1s they will regrade?
CGC Auto is on the front now, they no longer put them in the back of the slab.. Also SGC do grade in person auto's cause i have a whole lot of them i sent 5 months ago.. all it say is Authentic no grade!! unless they changed it within the 5 months
CGC recently gave their slab a full makeover and they look great, far better looking than Beckett or SGC. But if SGC upgrades their slab (better eye appeal), it'll be big.
Hey Jacob! The Pristine and black labels are definitely awesome, and will keep them around, but I am not sure it will help their submission volume for sports cards. The odds of getting a black label is less than 1% and a bgs 10 I believe is less than 5% while a BGS 9.5 is the most likely grade (around 50-65% of the time). A BGS 9.5 is now worth one third to a half of a PSA 10 (which you receive roughly 40-50% of the time), so while a black label is awesome, the risk may not be worth taking for some people. It may be worth it for Pokemon on the other hand as there are much higher odds of getting a 10 pristine and black label with TCG.
@scottiebcards2354 I definitely wouldn't be submitting to BGS. You'd be crazy to submit to any other grading company from a ROI standpoint. Referring to PSA. But if you can buy a BGS 10 or black label slab for a solid deal that would be a great get! Appreciate the video man, upload another Spitballin' video already! haha 🤙🏼
I’m completely done with PSA. They were my preferred grader for years because of their customer service, their consistency, and the added value. Lately (the past 6 months) my recent submissions to them have been horribly inconsistent to the point where I’m done giving them anymore of my business. 100% of my cards are heading to SGC now and a lot of other people I know are following suit. The secondary market values will adjust accordingly in time.
So.. if you buy a raw card from ebay or wherever, if the person that sold it got a 9 and cracked it, but YOU send it in and would be happy with a 9, they are still going to BAN that card, even if you had no idea and WANTED your card graded!?!?!?
One reason of many why I sold off my cards in 2024 was the grading farce, I got a 7 on a nice card, cracked it, resent it to same company and got a 9, also got a 10 on a card way off center and corner issues, there should be a company in which all they do is authtenic and encapsulate with a guarantee, grading is a joke
SGC is the most consistent like you said. the flippers mess up the value and are the reasons for the wide gap in ROI/Pricing. They come in and try to flip as soon as possible so they'll sell slabs out of desperation to get money back to buy more cards to grade. Flippers would pull a gold /10 and grade with SGC/CGC to sell for the first or second offer instead of holding it a little longer and demanding a price closer to PSA. True collectors will grade with SGC/CGC and value that card more and try to hold a little longer, but the flippers skew the value of other grading companies. so instead of wanting more competition to lessen the cost of grading, everyone helps a company create a monopoly and gives them the leverage and complains about how expensive they are. FOMO capitalism 101.
Hi Tim, great question. I always try to be as honest as possible in my content, and think I give quite a few cons in this video on PSA and why you might not want to submit with PSA at times. PSA is the #1 grading company in my eyes, but other companies like SGC, CGC, and BGS may make more sense in some cases. Thanks for watching!
Hey Scottie…appreciate your videos! Any chance you can do a video on the Jackson 3 and the fact that they have 2 different chrome true rookies? 1 in chrome and another in chrome update. I think this is the first time they’ve done this that I’m aware of…outside of a SP in chrome and the true rookie in update.
I'm fed up of grading companies dictating what our cards are worth Mark my words grading companies will be the death of this hobby!! Remember it's a hobby grading companies turned it into a business and how many times have you and everyone else gotten hosed by a bad grade. who are these graders what's their credentials. PSA is grading millions of cards do you honestly believe they are all getting rightly or fairly graded by newbees who know nothing about grading.
Grading is just a cash grab with little to no accuracy and zero accountability. I'll stick to raw cards for my PC. I also won't pay PSA 9 price for raw cards.
Grading is completely unreliable and hence worthless People send in the same card several times and get different grades If you want it for protection just do that, but otherwise quit wasting your money
I wouldn't say PSA is the best, they are not consistent and their turn around times are horrific, they are the most expensive, and their customer support is HORRIFIC. stop pushing PSA, its unethical. You getting kick backs from PSA clouds your vision and puts your recommendations in question.
Thank you for watching, and thank you for your thoughts. I do however still personally believe psa is number one currently. After seeing your comment yesterday, I ran a poll on my Instagram account and asked my audience which of the big four grading companies did they view as the best, and here are the results: 607 total votes: PSA: 86% 524 votes BGS: 3% 16 votes SGC: 9% 54 votes CGC: 2% 13 votes. Hopefully this helps explain the ranking for Psa. I am definitely always trying to align with how the majority feels, and I also feel psa is currently the number one.
@@scottiebcards2354 yea number one to upsell a card at 400% markup! in terms of customer care/quality control is what you should be polling for (is what i think you are missing) ask your audience how quick PSA returned any emails or messages when they had an issue..i have been waiting for 3 months and get nothing (tried getting a baseball graded and certd, had a question, got ghosted for months!). Your polling is flawed, you are going by profits, not overall quality control or customer support, or pricing. They charge the most, they are horrible on turn around times, and let me know how you are contacting PSA cause i have been trying to get a hold of them for 3 months! as a collector, these are my top concerns, especially when i am sending my vintage cards or high dollar items. You are going by those who purchase and sell cards, the community is blinded thinking PSA deserves a 400% markup, which is delusional. when asked, its because of their registry...thats all they can explain to justify markup which is horrific. To use Instagram as a data point is not what i would recommend. You are missing some major points such as customer care, especially when sending cards worth some value.. If you come back and say PSAs customer care is top, your ethics are in question, and that makes you part of the 400% markup problem, as you are pushing this company just for mere kickbacks. if you say otherwise then im sure we can have an educated discussion. People are falling for the hype. PSA uses PDF slides to young adults who graduated from high school to grade your card to their "own" made-up PSA criteria. They insert said card in a .50 cent slab they purchased from china with a red sticker to where they added holograms. Please let me know who they insured/refunded from anything to where they were at fault? can you grab that data point? thats another data point worth mentioning when determining who is the "best". Your polling and data has major flaws. Asking the masses on how you can rip off the uneducated (selling a graded card at a 400% mark-up) due to some plastic slab and sticker is not asking who is the best, its more so asking how can i get more profit for selling a card that was slabbed in plastic by a company that generated their own registry. you want to know what is the best? is knowing your valuables are safe and knowing customer care will take care of you in accordance with their own made up policy. Thats like saying Ferrari is the best out there cause they cost the most and you can sell it for 200% markup. But the reliability is trash and the maintenance is horrific. But when you look at Porsche, its truly the best, dependable, customer care is next to none and performance is through the roof. Only real collectors know, and the same can be had with your comparison.
Missed opportunity to mention TAG. They are up and coming, tell you EVERYTHING about why it was graded the way it was, the slabs feel great and are just as clear as CGC if not clearer, and the flip is minimal and clean. They might not have the resell value of PSA but they are probably on par with prices for CGC.
You should probably mention that you're sponsored by PSA at the beginning of the video, instead od most of the way thru it, so everybody knows it's all BS shilling. Unsub.
I just watched a video by zeeree, one of the few hockey sports card guys I've ever watched, and he got destroyed in an in person PSA submission. It's worth a watch because some of the grades had me scratching my head. Grading has become gambling of late, which bothers me quite a bit.

100% agree. Love knowing why a card received a certain grade instead of a grade based on emotions.
This is a great video. Excellent break down of the numbers. What do you think about TAG? In my opinion they are second only to PsA.
I’ll only grade with TAG. I want to know why the card received the assigned grade.

Everything except for 1/1s
From the chart it looks like the Beckett Pristine 10 and Black Label will keep Beckett relevant long term
Appreciate the video man, upload another Spitballin' video already! haha 🤙🏼
I was trying to write code for an app that will grade your card using Artificial Intelligence, but I don't know shit about building an app for Android
Maybe these companies will see this video and work to fix their cons.
Trout looks better in SGC for pc but for resale obviously PSA
Grading has its politics! Just regrade after the market goes up, don’t let the sharks come close!
Can you have an honest review when you are sponsored by them?
Hi Tim, great question. I always try to be as honest as possible in my content, and think I give quite a few cons in this video on PSA and why you might not want to submit with PSA at times. PSA is the #1 grading company in my eyes, but other companies like SGC, CGC, and BGS may make more sense in some cases. Thanks for watching!
I like CGC for there holder's PSA for the most money 💰 for graded cards BGS last 🎉
Off centered, dimple on the surface, slight corner ding...you can still grade a psa 10...lol😂
Exactly!
Si
CGCs reputation has been hurt in comic book grading. A couple of big scandels. PSA and CBCS will continue to affect their business
"GOoD 1 Scottie B!" Click bate w/ Ohtani'$ cards b/c U said (wanted) the "Yankees" won the W.S "accidentally." I'm on to U bro!
CGC has clearly passed Beckett.
@@RayRay_Davit I agree personally, but a lot of sports card collectors in particular still prefer BGS. I prefer CGC over BGS and SGC myself.
FCG is the most underrated grading company. This is the company that needs to move up the rankings. Cards pop in the slabs
It's called human error.
Grading is just a cash grab with little to no accuracy and zero accountability. I'll stick to raw cards for my PC. I also won't pay PSA 9 price for raw cards.
Grading is completely unreliable and hence worthless
People send in the same card several times and get different grades
If you want it for protection just do that, but otherwise quit wasting your money
After seeing your comment yesterday, I ran a poll on my Instagram account and asked my audience which of the big four grading companies did they view as the best, and here are the results:
607 total votes:
PSA: 86% 524 votes
BGS: 3% 16 votes
SGC: 9% 54 votes
CGC: 2% 13 votes.
Hopefully this helps explain the ranking for
Psa.
TAG... once you use them you will never go back. They put all these companies to shame. Best of Luck with the Junk Grade Era. TAG is pristine.
TAG is the best. These companies are the Junk Graders Era. TAG is pristine.
You should probably mention that you're sponsored by PSA at the beginning of the video, instead od most of the way thru it, so everybody knows it's all BS shilling. Unsub.
