Everything about the story including his immediate remorse and their taking no legal action and him shopping it around fits perfectly with this theory. I think you are right.
As a Canadian, I would imagine this will play out similar to a real-estate transaction that is firmed up but fell through. The case will relist, if it sells for $2.7 million, they will go after the buyer for the residual $1mm. It's open and shut for real estate, if you have a binding / firm offer if the property resells for less, the buyer who fell through is legally on the hook for the differential.
If they LOST 20 million in FanFest NYC, why do it again? Maybe STOP sugar coating and kissing fanatics butt and tell them honestly FanFest was a BUST to many. Come one a 40 yard dash and walking down a ramp with lights and music was weak and the worst part... the reason someone should have been fired, the VIP was terrible. Absolutely the worst VIP experience ever and I will continue to say this. They had TWO event products and only ONE was accessible to all. That was a FAIL IMO. Heck LIDS had the HOTTEST product with hats and cards. It was ARROGANT to schedule it during other card show too. Same with Orlando and Dallas, but did you call that out? COME ON! Fanatics can't get better if we don't tell them!
@@richardrobin5837because it wouldn’t be fair. imagine you’re in a bidding war with me and i keep raising the price just to say “nevermind”. the price of the item was raised because of the person who backed out.
10 or more 1/1’s is just silly. The 1/1 is a joke now a days. What’s most concerning is one of the products biggest hits only sells for 3x of the box release price. That’s really bad.
Most likely whoever buys this and opens it is screwed as that OPC gum is brutal and can ruin up to 4 cards in a pack. That case is only valuable unopened. Pounding Red Bulls? ....He needs to see a cardiologist now.
I agree. Especially if the box was stored in an area with high humidity. If in dry Western climate, only the top card is destroyed. But, I wouldn’t open any--keep case sealed.
@christophertarr9005 That OPC gum is really destructive.....they probably used less chemicals and pure sugar. Most say the gum is worse but that probably because the Topps gum stays on tact would indicate various ingredients that holds the form better. IE) more chemicals than what Canada would use. ;)
As an Edmonton born & raised gen-Xer and Gretzky fan, I cannot emphasize enough how rare this ‘79-80 OPC find is. The significance here is huge as a vast majority of “Pack fresh” ‘79-80 opens on the Internet are outright fraudulent with resealing. A sealed box is ultra rare and sealed case is a once in a lifetime discovery. Hopefully this can be resold to a serious collector with an appropriate price tag worthy of Wayne’s legacy. Indeed, the successful bidder may not make their money back; however, this is as much about the experience of opening a landmark product as it is in the money realized with resale. I hope it’s a collector with deep pockets rather than an investor who only has dollar signs as a purchase motivator.
This is a situation where CT scanning is necessary to help determine the authenticity of the case. Then why not show the CT scan images of the big cards as part of the auction listing?
Seriously, I’ll never understand the gambling aspect when people spend massive amounts of money and could just have PSA 10 rookies of every legend they’d ever want!
You'd have to read the TOS, but my guess is heritage considers a bid a binding contract. The family has a case. Anything less than a 6 figure difference would not be worth a lawsuit as it would cost too much in legal fees.
Meanwhile if I bid $20 on eBay I’m automatically charged 1 hour after the auction ends whether I want it or not - once you bid that should be a binding agreement. How was this even possible?
Heritage should be liable for the price it sold for because eBay has a guarantee that if the buyer is at fault then they (eBay) guarantee's to pay the seller for the sellers loss!!
Seemed a little odd fanatics canceled events????? Lol Fanatics is crumbling and bleeding money! They bought at the tippy top! Are you a true business man Jeff?
Just 1 PSA 10 Gretzky #18 1979 O-Pee-Chee from that year is 2.5 million "if" you could get a PSA 10 grade, probably be 1 or more Gretzky's in each box.
I'm sad the mint isn't coming back. That show was fun. I always seem to be unavailable when the front row shows are in Vegas, but I'd love to go back there for another show. Probably the best town in the whole country for a show
Fanatics probably had a lot of people that were part of the event from areas affected by the storm. Although Orlando wasn't hit hard, plenty of people from the FL area hurt by hurricane that were signed up more than likely backed out and Fanatics couldn't get anyone to fill those spots.
This is ridiculous. The family wouldn't win in court. People renege on bids every minute of the day. The family had recourse to sell it to the next best bidder. Or, they could have immediately relisted the item. And, the winner can equally plead mental health reasons for bidding. As for the fine print about the legal commitments related to the consignment company, any decent attorney would drive a truck through it. The family itself knows the sale isn't final until the money is actually transferred. At best, bidding is a handshake agreement, simply because pursuing someone for damages itself is a can of worms, and usually not worth the emotional turmoil. What the family, consignment company, and winner needed to do is immediately settle the matter out of court. I get that letting the bidder off the hook sets a precedent. But, even the number based on my own knowledge of the hobby was unrealistic. Almost all disputes should be settled amicably.
If it's a case that has a Wayne Gretzky rookie that graded PSA 10 sold for 4 million and it's selling for 3.7 million for a whole case that probably has at least 5-10 maybe more Gretzky rookies I mean it sounds like a decent deal
I feel when the case was opened to be authenticated it truly killed it’s value, cause it’s not a true unopened case now is it, it’s a bunch of loose boxes. Any thoughts on that?
I wonder if The guy tried to flip it and got caught with his hand in the cookie jar? Obviously he does not have the funds. He needs to be banned for life from all auctions and of course sued into oblivion!
@ sure but at that price point I am sure they have his name and had to verify his funds. He is such a bitch for not paying his bill. The family should sue him just to cost him a fortune in legal fees.
Rubin used Fanatics as leverage for the new 76ers arena to sell the franchise off for a record deal and profit. He is going to limit overall risk/exposure in his portfolio of investments/ownership. The economy is in trouble. Wealthy people are making moves as in sell offs to cash in and hold while it all shakes, rattles and rolls.
Bid was dumb. There are about 27 great one cards in that case, if they all get PSA 9, which they won’t, and they go for $125K a pop, you are losing. Know this, some of the cards will be 7’s and 8’s. OPC is notorious for bad centering, rough edges, and print marks. Also, I doubt this case was in temp and humidity control, so surface will be an issue. You aren’t getting any 10s. 2/11500 is like 0.000017 chance at a 10.
Really sad to see what happened with the 79 O-Pee-Chee case, it was a great story for the hockey hobby that it sold that high - and would have been great even a lot lower, but feel that it’s going to leave a bad taste if the next auction ends significantly lower, which it probably will (probably b/c that guy was uneducated and thought he was gonna get a whole bunch of PSA 10 Gretzkys out of the case and then realized he wasn’t)
Hertiage Auctions should have in their contracts that any BIDDER who wins, should the "deadbeat" and default on payment, they owe the Buyer's Premium (I think it's 20%) to Heritage who goes through the rigors of marketing these auctions. It's primarily a penalty to do more than a warning or slap on the wrist to flaky buyers that there are repercussions to deceptive actions. The buyer can't simply do an "oops, my bad" and walk away. There needs to be a financial penalty.
7:48 He makes it like it's a definite sure thing there won't be a PSA 10 in any of the boxes. What an ridiculous comment to make. These are fresh, never before opened boxes from an entire case. Have to assume there's at least a decent shot if there ever would be that you have one or more potential PSA 10's in there.
Vintage cards are notoriously tough to gem. Assuming that they don't have moisture or other environmental damage, they are almost guaranteed to be off centered or have print issues. There is a reason there are only 2 PSA 10s
You're not getting your money back from that case because sport card manufactures are trash and they sell trash quality products as well ...to this day.
The buyer should be sued and blasted on all social media accounts..He's just making up bs ..But it's on Heritage to make these buyers Pay and is a big big black eye on them
I'm a big fan as well. There was a show a few years ago that I complained about because all the segments were only about grading. There's more to the hobby than just grading.
I was watching another RUclipsr and he was talking about next year's national they're going to open up a top-level for brand new first time dealers that's going to be different
Tbh if I were to look at the Fanatics situation from an investor standpoint I would be extremely concerned. IMO Fanatics current actions, quality control issues, release issues, ect. Is more indicative of a company that is beginning to hemorrhage. I feel the up coming months and next few years will be exponentially crucial for the growth of the hobby.
Probably get more if they auction by the box and do it over a prolonged period..... Or open them and grade the gretzky''s.... And auction them over a prolonged period. Saturating the market would do damage to the stock.
I know what he was doing bidding the auction up but when he won he like oh crap what do I do now make up a BS story but Heritage chasing the guy for 8 months is nuts
What if the buyer was in collusion with seller? Just pumping up the bid? But it backfired
That's the first thing I thought too.
Obviously in cahoots:(
Everything about the story including his immediate remorse and their taking no legal action and him shopping it around fits perfectly with this theory. I think you are right.
That is a hell of a shill
Happens all the time on eBay, and Heritage pumped up WATA graded games with that method.
Bids over a million dollars should have a substantial deposit demanded
That buyer should be banned from every auction house and selling platform known to existence.
Even don’t sell him pull tabs at the carnival!😁 What a bum!
To include ebay and whatnot!
The only 10x in the hobby now is the prices, not the people coming in.
And than trying to sell a billion worth of stock, they’re not here for the long haul. They’re here for the quick buck!
This feels like a miss on Heritage's part. To let a client hang like that for 8 months is unacceptable.
Tim Hortons needs to buy that case and run a promotion - exchange 1 million reward points for a pack.
That’s a great idea. That is thinking outside the box!
As a Canadian, I would imagine this will play out similar to a real-estate transaction that is firmed up but fell through. Probstein has done this for years, but we turn a blind eye

Look, I don't know about you, but when I bid $3.7 million on an auction, I honor my bid and pay up immediately!

Good man 🫡
Should’ve gone to 2nd highest bidder
Yes!!! I can't believe there's not a clause on the website that states this

Then they took a heat gun to each box to shrink wrap em 🤦🤦💀💀
Thank you for reporting on all of the latest issues in the Hobby !!!

2nd highest bidder should be given first option to buy at the same or similar price.
If I had that kind of money to drop on auctions, I would just spend my time instead looking to buy the highest-graded versions of grail cards.
Seriously, I’ll never understand the gambling aspect when people spend massive amounts of money and could just have PSA 10 rookies of every legend they’d ever want!
its always someone else with a better idea. if i had wings id fly away
Fanatics is out to suck up as much money as possible with poor products at high prices!
can we get a decent card show in Atlanta. I don't mind the ones in Marietta/Dunwoody, but something on par with Nashville?
You'd have to read the TOS, but my guess is heritage considers a bid a binding contract. The family has a case. Anything less than a 6 figure difference would not be worth a lawsuit as it would cost too much in legal fees.
**Update**. The real buyers name is Jack Meeoff and he was never gonna pay 😂
Non paying buyers is a growing problem. See it happen at local auction houses on all kinds of stuff.
Fanatics is going down in flames!
Why do you believe Fanatics is going down in flames?
Far from it!
The fight is being streamed live on Netflix FYI
Fellas the Mike Tyson fight is free on Netflix. 🙏 praying I don’t have to see a 60 year old get KOd by a kid half his age

Buyer needs to be sued. People don't learn if you let them of the hook
The owners could sue the buyer for the amount not realized after the new auction.
You mean eBay is more legit for auctions than Heritage? 😂
He forgot to mention the red bull was mixed with vodka.
Heritage should be liable for the price it sold for because eBay has a guarantee that if the buyer is at fault then they (eBay) guarantee's to pay the seller for the sellers loss!!
Nahh people would just outbid on their own items under a fake account and never pay for it…
I bet it was auction site, and owner just bidding up the price and no one bid after the last increase.
I disagree that non certification will not effect the value. It absolutley will.
Seemed a little odd fanatics canceled events????? Lol Fanatics is crumbling and bleeding money! They bought at the tippy top! Are you a true business man Jeff?

What if they was buy bidding running the bid so the commission be out there
should be a 10% fee for buyers remorse
Why didn't Heritage just offer it to the next highest bidder like Ebay does.
they should bring it to Goldin collectables auctions to relist it

Yeah, but your 10' POP 2 probably came from a seal box. Most of the rest, no, so from a seal case, you have more chance to have a PSA 10.

So its basically just like a typical ebay sale.
Honor the bidder that had the 2nd highest bid if they still want it. I personally think it will sell for less now because the hype is gone.

Doug's wrong he's basically saying since people do it on smaller ones and other auctions that it's OK to shill bid and not pay lmao
There’s a high probability that Jake Paul dies in the ring, so those cards might be worth more than you think.
So when is T-Pot going to tell us about the Conn Smith Trophy?
There's actually precedent. An eBay seller successfully won a case of this against a diamond ring buyer

That 1/1 was a bad buy imo
" theres very few things in this world i would want less than anything jake paul " had me in tears 😂 💀
Did this dude really call the Jumpman logo the “Nike dunking symbol” 💀
