To expound on my answer in this video: No, I do not think Ohtani cards are a bubble. He is really really really good and just won a World Series. The only risk for Ohtani is injury (for example if he is bad after the labrum surgery he just had), but the same could be said for any modern player. If he is healthy, I think he will continue to be really really really good.
I completely agree with inserts, and as a Chourio collector, I've got an interest in a lot of the Topps Chrome Update SSP insert sets. Any insert with a print run of 200 or less I'm all about. Let's Go!, Hidden Gems, Expose, Chrome Home Field Advantage and even Cosmic Chrome's Supernova are all super good looking and feel undervalued for their number of copies.
The dude just won the World Series, a 50/50 season and will pitch next year. Not even close is his bubble about to burst. Inserts need some love. In the 90s, if you pulled an insert, you were just jiggy with it. Now, might as well get a base Boof Bonser.
Thanks for the video, great insight as always. Unfortunately, I think this video is giving me more reasons to stop collecting. Print runs are out of control; Topps Now is nothing but a money grab (like you said) and it lends itself to those with deep pockets; there’s too many products which leads to a watered down market and the high end stuff is priced to the point that only millionaires can collect it. Ok, maybe millionaire is a stretch, but you know what I mean. All in all, the cons are starting to outweigh the pros in my opinion. Fun and nostalgia can only take you so far.
Scott, just so much happening with prices for new products through the roof, does Soto stay or go, to what inserts are worth anything. Scanners, you name it. I just want to collect and enjoy what I like. No more days of set building unless it’s my vintage years.
100% a bubble. The prices for current players with THOUSANDS of PSA 10s and 9s are nuts. Compare them to HOFers with single digits of PSA 10s and 9s make today's bubble obvious.
I think the problem with early 2000's cards is the era itself. Several HOFers were on their way out or had just retired, and very few were on their way in. Only two great players off top of my head that were great players in early 2000's are Pujols and Ichiro, maybe Griffey JR but he was 30 in the middle of his career in the early 2000s? Today, there are several great players. (note, PED guys were not included) Anyone can name - Acuna, Tatis, Freeman, OhTaNi, Betts, Harper, JuDgE, Goldie Goldschmidt, the list can go on from there.
Having an uneventful World Series helped prevent his cards from going to higher highs so looking forward to picking up more Ohtani during the off-season. Dodgers are primed to win multiple Championships and Ohtani will have multiple rings further cementing his GOAT status. Ohtani will get his time to shine in the World Series (Batting and Pitching). Thus I am keeping majority of my PSA 10 Ohtani rookies. I did cash out on his lower end rookies, inserts that I bought cheap a few years ago (to offset/pay for the rest of my Ohtani collection).
Ohtani in 7 years of MLB service. ROY, soon to be 3 MVPs (with a 2nd place as well), 1st ever to 50/50 and a ring. His legacy is in tact if he walked away tomorrow, how much can he pile on is the question. And if somehow he could ever win a Cy Young, oooh boy.
Yup. Some people are still stuck on collecting counting stats when a shorter career that is top tier is far more exciting. Would anyone collect Harold Baines instead of Ohtani? Even Harold's mom would have an Ohtani Jersey.
@@Darbobski Bingo. It's why someone like Tim Lincecum is far more exciting to me than say, Zack Greinke. I mean, the latter is a great pitcher and very well may make the HOF, but Lincecum was the MAN for 3-4 years, his starts were absolute can't miss events.
@@sfosoxfan I like to point to Sandy Koufax as an example of a great, but short career that outshines many longer ones. As much as a like Bert Blyleven, who would collect him over Sandy?
I see so many saying inserts are underappreciated, so I'll be the villain and voice my opinion against that. My biggest issue with inserts is that there's not really a pattern, consistency, or relevancy to a lot of them. Now I know there's some great insert sets, but often times they will lack something. For example the planetary pursuit from cosmic didn't even have odds this year because of how badly they messed up last year, home field advantage are just a different name to already created cards, the throwback ones just have a little stamp that says 35th anniversary or whatever and doesn't really do anything archives and heritage don't already do, etc. I would much rather collect image variations instead, and I feel inserts are overvalued often times
I feel as if there are 2 layers to Ohtani's "bubble". The first part of the bubble that is most susceptible to popping or at least shrinking is the "anything Ohtani" bubble. Right now, everything with Ohtani on it is at a premium. This includes team cards and non-numberd inserts. This is because some people who know nothing about cards are buying cards due to FOMO. This part of the bubble will eventually pop or shrink back to normal. The other bubble consists of higer-end gradeds short-prints, rookies and autos. This bubble is made of steel. Unless Ohtani pulls a Wander, we are looking at an era defining player who will be as synonymous with the game as Babe Ruth. The bubble will not shrink from this point forward, it will simply grow at different rates. Just my take.
@@johnwayne9828 I've always collected targets players and not random hopefuls out of packs. My Mantle, Ruth, Aaron and Clemente cards have never significantly dropped in value. I don’t quite get the Topps Now complaint. You wanted the cool moments in the other sets how? No one cares about the milestone cards in those sets. It’s been fun going to games and seeing a card from that game. I can see getting frustrated with parallels and stuff but that’s the same as opening a pack of cards isn’t it? Like your odds are actually way better since you’re ordering the exact card you want not a 330 card set?
Dodgers will be a world series candidate every year. Ohtani will be an MVP candidate every year just with his bat. Now imagine him possibly winning a Cy young or in the very least, a ws clinching game. Moon.
Trout's cards aren't going to drop much lower. His WAR and personal performances ensure HoF enshrinement. Despite potentially disappointing final stats due to injury, Trout is an icon to many new collectors. His floor isn't going to drop out. If he retired today, his cards would steadily climb in value over time. If he somehow manages to put in 350 ABs a season until he turns 40, then we will see a bump. People with the more rare Trouts are holding right now. I've not seen all that many sales myself.
Out of topic, but Ohtani cannot be stubborn and take high risks in order to win. High risk game play results in unnecessary injuries. If he has a chance to rest but the team will be good to win, he needs to take that rest
Yes. He cannot possibly aggregate more popularity in the US. Otherwise, he surpasses Michael Jordan. That said, if Japanese citizens become collectors of baseball cards, he can become more popular in the hobby.
