    The index is bloody amazing. The controllers are definitely trendsetting, I can't imagine going back to anything else, the finger tracking is so much more immersing and makes so much difference. The higher refresh rate display is also a life changing feature and makes me feel like I've jumped into ready player one. The higher resolution does have the unfortunate tendency to want to set my computer on fire as my gpu works up a sweat but it's well worth it. Currently got a GTX 1080 and looking for a suitable upgrade so I can enjoy higher resoloutions at 120 hz because 120Hz is needed for this amazing experience.

      @Booker Skye but VR isnt just about games. if anything expect the huge breakthroughs in other area's long before games. also the Quest is like a mobile phone you arent going to get bioshock or mass effect level AAA games on that at all. it barely runs beat saber.

    • @Nick17354
      @Nick17354 5 лет назад +1

      @Booker Skye I agree. However there really needs to be both. For you, and for lot's of other people, 399 for a Quest or Rift S is a great deal. It's a great entry point into VR, and probably a much better experience than the cheaper WMR headsets, at least with the Rift S. For people who want to spend a little more, Reverb would be a fantastic choice at 600. For me, with base stations that work perfectly, 749 for the Index and controllers is an easy pill to swallow to put my OG vive to rest, and jump back into Elite Dangerous and be wowed all over again at 120Hz and 130 fov! :-)

    • @MrShadowRaiden
      @MrShadowRaiden 5 лет назад +3

      @Booker Skye its already being used in surgery and other professions though. heck alot of smaller movies are using Valve's tracking systems to do motion capture now instead of doing massive expensive suits.
      also you can get mass effect level stuff on PC VR heck fallout 4 and Skyrim VR are full experiences of their games in vr and work great if not better than their base games. No Mans Sky looks amazing in VR and will be a huge seller. Elite Dangerous is amazing in VR as well.

      Jacob Flo well just think about it logically. Compared to the Rift S for example the whole set up is $600 more ($500 more than Vive). But what are you getting for that additional cost? Lighthouse 2 tracking which is far superior and will probably continue to provide the best tracking solution for years to come (though isn’t cheap to produce). Higher resolution panels, Wider field of view, drastically higher refresh rate, over ear speakers (better audio) and a mechanical IPD adjuster (not cheap to produce either). The Index also has 2 cameras for passthrough view of your environment around you. Now when you move on to the knuckles controllers it’s clearly obvious there’s more input controls and they’re also PACKED full of sensors more than touch or vive wands. In my opinion I still don’t think it should cost $600 more maybe closer to $500 more but you also have to consider how much the rift was when it was first released. A huge reason oculus products are so affordable NOW is because of long term big funding, the relationships established with distributors as well as fine tuning production to Lower costs. Their profit margins are also smaller as they’re trying to push VR into the hands of more users. When breaking all of that down it makes perfect sense why the Index bundle is $1000 and is also a good deal especially when compared to the Vive Pro. The price will also drop within the next year or so when sales start to drop off. Dont get me wrong I’m a huge fan of oculus products. honestly I don’t think you can get any better bang for your buck anywhere else and the overall VR quality is excellent but the Index is definitely going to cater to those of us who have owned the vanilla Rift +touch or vanilla Vive and are ready for that big next step up. I’m personally really excited for the higher refresh rate, wider field of view, higher resolution and really glad they decided to use lighthouse technology instead of inside out for tracking.

      @@EpicConspiracy unfortunately youre probably right.. the rift s looks like a very very very small upgrade to me.. its more of a wmr 1.5 than a rift 2 or even a rift 1.5, but overall i would probably prefer that over the index for the price point/ convenience of inside out tracking etc (assuming it tracks controllers 10x better than my current lenovo exploerer wmr does anyway..)
      but looking at all the options, its not worth the upgrade. none of them look any better to me than my lenovo explorer... same lcd screens, similar res (lower for rift s, slightly higher for index) pretty much same fov, no new technology... no point in upgrading unless i wanted slightly better controller tracking. and since i primarily use vr for sim racing... theres definitly no point in upgrading.. unless these new headsets make other older hmd's offer more competitive pricing (samsung odyssey/ odyssey + etc)
      althoug for sim racing that hp reverb does look rather nice.. or the pimax 5k+ if i could afford it...
      maybe the vive cosmos will be decent.. like the rift s but with better screens etc. hopefully a fov bump.. why the f has vr not had an fov bump yet? tis the most asked for thing behind resolution... im not talking massive, as i see the complications pimax is facing (although it sounds like its working pretty well nowadays..) im just talking 120-140 deg fov becoming the new normal.. why are they all still 100-110??? jeeze...

      EpicConspiracy bruh the rift s isn’t a big improvement from the original rift, nobody is willing to drop 400 for the same damn headset.
      For gen 1 head sets I would say oculus won vs vive. However gen 2 the valve headset beats rift s by a landslide.
      Oculus has given up on innovating and improving experiences and has opted to cheap out on their headsets by removing mechanical ipd adjustment, and built in headphones and the like, but still keeping the 400 dollar price point.
      Valve will now be leading the VR industry and honestly I’m switching my oculus to the index

    • @wotever99ninynine
      @wotever99ninynine 5 лет назад

      @@DeVipurr I think they are selling the quest at a loss and making up for it by selling a very shitty pc vr at a massive profit. The quest has ipd, it has more tech, a built in processor, battery etc. It's technically far more expensive to manufacture etc. The rift s is just a shitty Oculus go, without the built in processor/battery converted to a lower resolution version of wmr but with slightly better controller tracking.. It's abysmal. They are truly showing they don't care about their pc customers. I guess it's good they are trying to get more people into vr, make it mainstream by making it cheap and independent from a pc etc. I'm still not happy though. Apparently the rift s has similar tracking issues as wmr (tracking messes up when holding controller too close to face, I. E when looking down gun scope/sights.. And lower res screens... Jeeze.)
      Not exactly the 'upgrade' I expected, I mean... The res/sde is barely better, it now has worse black levels etc Due to no oled. And much worse tracking than original rift, which they discontinued..
      Maybe they should offer the rift s independent if controllers and with old tracking sensors instead of cameras too, for those that want the slight sde/resolution upgrade but don't want to sacrifice tracking.. I dunno

But news kept coming about the knuckles controllers still being on the way, and the Pimax and all those guys were bragging about higher resolutions and wider FOV, so I didn't want to go for a first gen HMD knowing upgrades were coming, and the Vive Pro didn't seem like a big enough improvement, so it never felt worth it to invest in the hardware, much as the games have been tempting me... It feels like the sound of the world envelops you versus coming from a single direction. I am not even sure if something like the mobius headphones would make enough of a qualifiable difference since the VR headset already makes the audio position based. I think in this regard they nailed the sound. I cannot wait for my controllers to come in so I can test those out. Love the fact that we can do this piece meal too.

Everything in the Valve eco-system is compatible with each other - controllers, trackers, etc. And while at this time it's not that diverse, it's far more "PC-like", in that you can take a Vive, and pair it with the Valve controllers, running on third party lighthouses. Price got everyone to go with Oculus, but in the end I feel like closed systems like that are the wrong direction to go.

    • @lerrok
      @lerrok 5 лет назад +1

      @@BlownMacTruck Well their own systems are going to be compatible with their own systems, kind of makes sense, but any other VR manufacturers outside of HTC/Valve are not compatible with their stuff, so really they're all closed systems. The equivilent that I can think of is that Oculus has back-wards compatibility with their new touch controller design as well, so the old model works the same.

      @Soren B The good thing is I have plenty of games in my library. :) Looking forward replaying some of them with the improved graphics. Especially Ones with smaller texts and Dirt Rally (which run amazingly even without official support, but the screen door and low resolution really had bad impacts, with 1080 TI it would be able to render in 4k and downscale. So should also be able to give us 120Hz).

      Forcing Half-Life fans to spend $1000 to continue the series in VR as opposed to traditional mouse and keyboard is the complete opposite of genius. Do you have any clue how many people that would piss off? I can already see the review bombs on basically every Valve game. It would increase interest in the Index, but that would be completely eclipsed by the tidal wave of pissed off people that have been waiting over a decade to finish the story but now have to spend $1000 and strap a device on their head as well as have a big empty space to do so. Sorry if you don’t have a grand to burn and VR makes you nauseous and you live in a cramped apartment Half-Life fans!
      Even doing an exclusive Half-Life spin-off would be risky, but I’d be okay with that. Just don’t call it Half-Life 3 or there will be virtual riots.

    Despite being a nobody, I think I know the solution to making VR perfect.
    1) Micro LED panels
    2) Onboard CPU for screen/lens adjustments
    3) SLI GPU setup. Till single GPU can power two 1440p 144hz cheaply.
    And for the love of God, can we get a nonprofit organization to build a Linux distro built for booting straight to VR, and then develop an oasis like world from ready player one.
    To be more specific, we need a multi platform (This, Oculus, Vive) where you put the headset on and your in a 1st person sim like world where we have different cities (aka realms/servers) and then personal shops/homes you can teleport to. The problem with this is DLC/IAP, a nonprofit would be the best to do this.
