Quick question though, did you experience anything with your PSU yet? I don't even understand how it would effect it but apparently some have had issues. What wattage do you have? Turn down your brightness... everybody probably doesn't realise that having your headest set to 130% brightness can cause major damage and probably that overheating, there are some pretty good settings you can use that prevent harm and you can get lens covers, controller covers and the like to prevent harm. Like any piece of high-end tech, use all the protective shit you can get your hands on.
I literally do everything wrong... I kink my cable, I unplug it constantly, I keep the faceplate on, I have _never_ turned my base stations off in over a year of use, I've banged the controllers into each other countless times playing Beat Saber, I even punched a ceramic pot with them while playing and I've never had any issues. Maybe I just got some crazy durable kit... Edit: Two hours after posting this comment, my headset is getting a shit ton of display errors and is pretty much unusable. Fuck.
Biggest tip I can give to anyone with an Index is to never let anyone else touch it who doesn't understand how much the thing costs and how fragile it can be. The first time I let someone else use my Index they punched a wall while playing boneworks and the trigger has never been the same since. (Trigger is permanently pressed in a little bit.)
idk, when I just got an Index both me and my friends smashed controllers pretty damn hard both against concrete walls and against each other in beat saber and super hot. About 700 hours in (and some by previous owner, I bought it used) and still no complaints, no drift
I have a window mixed reality. I was thinking of either upgrading to the Rift s or the index. I was just going to but the index controllers because the real issue I have with my vr is the tracking because it’s good but very shaky and irritating. It’s easy to ignore if your using it for a long period of time. But for games like Pavlov it never stops bugging you. But after doing a bit of research I figured out that the valve index controllers aren’t compatible with my vr which I sort of expected but just wanted to make sure. My great is also incredibly uncomfortable if you plan to use it for more than an hour. But with my mixed reality I’ve never had problems with the cord other than it being a bit short. But I’ve never stepped on it. So if you know the size or length of the cord that would be good to know. Edit: I had just bought the Index yesterday. I'm waiting for it to deliver but I will update if any problems with shipping or the Vr occur.
About the PSU issues. The index runs externally so what your saying and that post isn't true. The reason that was happening is because the card was at max and was pulling more wats then the PSU could handle resulting in lower fps and also PSU whining it has nothing to do with the index itself. Now if this is the case you do not need to upgrade to a new PSU all you need to do is perhaps underclock your GPU a little bit resulting in lower fps but this will fix your PSU whining and should result in more stable frames
I really want to get a valve index as I currently use a oculus rift S which is on its way out (planned obsolescence) but I’m so worried about how cheap index’s seem to be, I’ve heard they are by far the best headsets available with the finger tracking controllers and the ability to do full body tracking, but in terms of build they are made of like cheap abs plastic.
Most People aren't aware of the wattage load a GPU can pull. The fan on the power supply was revving up to accommodate the higher heat from running a game. VR gaming is harder to render than most normal displays because there are 2 screens with different vectors. I would encourage anyone serious in PC gaming to consider the supply they are using. 746 watts is a Horse Power, there are custom flash's of the RTX 4090 that pull 600Watts. Personally I want some headroom so the fan isn't on 24/7, I shoot for 25% or there abouts over my needs.
As a last resort there is a company in china that sells the index cable. I do believe it's the manufacturer of the cable since it's identical to the one you get from valve. It will cost you 100-150$ though.
Dont power off the base station externally unless it has a problem. The firmware has its own ramp up and ramp down cycle. Let them use standby mode. The new fans that fit the front hole better work extremely well. I have never tilted the front up to put the headset on and off and further I leave the tightness set. If its to tight I get a headache so i leave it relatively loose. Cables and other accessories are for sale now from Valve.
so basically I would have to keep them turned on forever on standby mode wasting power? such an awesome piece of tech only for it to have durability of glass and stupid decisions. I might consider just getting some other headset or wait more.
@@osvaldaspaslauskas5040 I mean like any device in standby (unless its a monitor with a gsync module) its milliamps and that's may not even be measurable on ur utility bill over the period of 1 year. @@OrbitaLinx thanks for that I’m really torn I really wanna get it but at same time not But most likely will idk. And out of curiosity why does monitor with gsync module consumes more power than the other monitors is it like that even when they are off?
@@osvaldaspaslauskas5040 I know they do it in standby mode I forget about off. If I recall correctly they do but that might not be correct. I learned about it in an LTT or Gamers Nexus video last year. They plugged them into the wall threw a power meter and every monitor they had with a gsync module in it, had a 50w draw when off and the rest did not.
I have my base stations plugged into a couple of Wyze smart plugs . . . I just tell Google to turn them on when I'm getting ready to play and off when I'm done. I highly recommend that setup!
Honestly I have the index pretty much since release and it looks like I have done absolutely everything this video tells you not to do. Until now I had absolutely no problems. Everything still works perfectly. The only problem was the battery of one of the controller died. But… yeah …. It’s old …. It’s alowed to die. I replaced and and it’s going strong again.
I've used my Index for over 770 hours now and I can tell you that it's not all that bad. My headset has fallen as well as the controllers multiple times on tile floors, but I can speak for myself that I've never had the issues he's talking about. The only drawback is simply the fact that you need to tether to pc.
Tethered will always be the best way to experience low latency, no compression VR. I'm sure in the future, they will figure out how to offer almost lossless image.
had an index over 2 years and 3k hours and a common drunkard in VRC. i have only ever replaced the cable about once a year. i hooked my base stations up and they have never been powered off minus moving stuff or power outages. my controllers are cracked but work fine with zero stick drift so far even with a once or twice beer spill. my headset seems fine and has never over heated even before i had AC in here and it would get 85+f/29+c in my room. the room temp made me quit long before the headset. my left ear piece did die with no luck fixing it so headset required now. i think i have had good luck with my headset considering but my hope for an index 2 is dying haha.
a good tip for the "enter standby mode on shutdown" option for steamVR - If you force close the program, the base stations will not enter standby mode. If I plan on hopping back into VR within an hour or so, I'll simply alt+f4 steamVR to keep my base stations on. That way I get the best of both worlds when it comes to longevity and silence.
Huge question can you do a valve index compatible pc video for 2021 low end 🤔 to mid to high end 🤔 I have a valve index and would like to know what's a good pc to havdel it oh and pre built would be nice if possible
Unless you want to overpay due to parts going way about it’s retail price I’d honestly say prebuilt is the only way to go for a decently nice build. Trust me building your on is the way to go, but right now it’s really not unless you want to put more of a dent in your pocket buying off scalpers or inflated priced parts due to scalping.
And stick drift can easily be fixed with electronic safe isopropyl alcohol you just need to clean the sensor I have done it twice now and each time it completely gets rid of all stick drift
I love your honest opinion in every video. It doesn't feel like you're holding back and you just speak facts about every product you talk about. Cheers dude! 🤔
Bought for and got my Valve set on my 30 bday All good, but second day I got em I accidentally hit a hard place of my fireplace, and the joystick got fucked up. This was only second day trying them out jeeeEEEZ
JUST got a Valve index today. Glad I found this. Could you point me to a vid or guidance on establishing physical "play space". Should I hang cables from ceiling to prevent from stepping on them? Should I put carpet to identify boundaries that I might step out of? Anything else that I am not thinking of?
def hang the cables off the ceiling 100% and if you have an own room for the index no carpet required you will know and if you dont then if you have enough money get a carpet or some kind of different material for the ground
I've been trying to sort out this problem that I've been having with my headset where it says it can't connect to the GPU - turns out the problem was the cable being mangled everytime I put the headset on. Given that my warrenty has expired, I'm now expected to spend over £100 on a new tether because Valve seem to have forgotten that the headset might just *stop working* when you put it on your face.
to comment about the power supplies. it is probably from maxxing out the power supply causing the fans to not only turn on but hit max speed. especialy with the system specs in shown in the vid, a 750 is usualy enough for basic use. but when all components are obtaining high draw especialy with a power hungry vr you are going to max that small PSU. it is good to take your max power needed for your rig (including your VR) and add 40%. this will keep you in the most efficient range of the power supply, keep fan from needing to kick on, and make sure max power draw does not cause system issues or extra noise.
Have had mine for about a year and thankfully no issues with it. My only "problem" is I need to restart my PC before going into VR. If I don't, I get a ton of stuttering. But if I restart I get none at all. I'll need to look at my cable, though it seems fine. It feels pretty solid, but I might also just not be putting it through a lot of abuse, which is a good thing. :) Thanks for the video and things to look out for.
I throw my magnetic cover across the room somewhere on the first day and I haven't seen it since.. that was 3 years ago now.. xD My Index cable lasted a little over 2 years, it had several splits in the cable, the bit where it connected to the headset was so raw and managed I took pictures of it and people said it needed to taken for science to find out how it was still working. It techically still works, so I got it in a draw should anything happen to my new one! :P With the Base Stations just make sure you use the Bluetooth Power Management and if it sometimes doesn't turn off use the Light House App for either ISO or Android. Turning your Sensors off by the power is a sudden power cut and can and will damage the motor. I use a faceplate made from 4 different brands just to make one comfortable one, at one point I was using a chinese brand with weak magnets, I'm honestly surprised I haven't scratched them.. :P I haven't actually owned a PSU before 1000W for about 10 years.. I'm lucky I don't have drift but I have very Squeaky Triggers, it's like I'm hold a mouse in each hand and squeezing them.. I play VR much and I play VRChat nearly every, my Playspace breaks or drifts so often, we get used to given up and just turn off the guardian.. It's nice to have but I don't need it. For an example of how important wrist straps are, look up OniiJayuu on twitch and look at their recent videos! :) The clip is called "Controller goes to space". xD
You can get a kiwi front fan for 30 bucks on Amazon if that's one thing I'd get it would be that other than a pulley system. I didn't have heating issues with mine before but just gives me peace of mind
I havent turned of my base stations since i got my index in august 2021 once they are up to full spin the momentum takes most of the strain from the motors
odd, as far as I'm aware valve has been selling the cables ever since the first headsets started going out of warrenty. (though this might have been a US related issue only since here warranty lasts 2 years which is why the US got it "late")
I wish there were ways to upgrade the index headset. I’m not afraid to take thing apart and do resoldering or 3D printing. It’s crazy how little mod videos or support there are for this thing 🤔
Huh. Seems I was lucky then! Accidently smashed my controlled into the edge of my chimney while getting carried away in Gorn. Still works like a charm tho..
Really sucks bc as a teenager who bought the Index over a year ago with some savings, I can't afford my Index breaking in any way at all. I haven't encountered any hardware failures as of yet, and I've put well over a thousand hours into it. Knowing that it's just a matter of time really sucks, but I've treated it well since day one of having it and I've babied it just as much as my og vive (over 3000 hrs). Great video though!
Using a VI bought this year 2023 - Tilt crush doesn't seem to be a thing at the time of writing. There is no visible way for the headband to squash or pinch the cable. I have a 650W psu and get no whining from it ( my graphics card likes to spin up though sometimes GTX1660Ti ) My Index headset has it's own independent power supply which splices into the tether, I don't know if that was the same when you wrote this video. I've not noticed mine get particularly hot ( no hotter than my old quest ) I suppose it's possible that Valve have remedied some of these issues. I've moved from a quest to a Valve Index and I find my overall experience better. Clearer view, FAR better sound without the need for separate headphones and better controls ( I actually really like the knuckles ) The index is certainly more comfortable. Also I've moved from Windows to Linux ( the quest was preventing me using Linux ). In linux the base stations do not shut down when you exit Steam VR, I just turn them off at night. I don't know what they do in Windows currently but under Steam VR settings I can't see any power management for the base stations so I guess they are "always on" possibly to improve their lifespan. I've also wall mounted my base stations rather than placing them on a surface and relying on their rubber feet.
🤔Gonna be buying some basestations soon for full body so knowing this is really helpful! I have a habit of always turning stuff on and off a lot which i probably would have done a lot if i didnt know this.
Put your index and light houses on a dedicated power strip. This way you can keep them powered off until you need them. You can power them all on or all off with one switch.
I don't own a Valve Index as of right now but i am getting one soon and many of the problems that I've looked into for this headset have likely been fixed after some time. 🤔
I never noticed the cable crease while putting on my index, I'll definitely be more aware next time, thanks! also is the overheat a big problem or just discomfort? I don't have issues with it, and I don't think I need to buy the usb fans, maybe it's just some hot climate areas?
I've never had a issue with thermals and I littery have a custom built tracker usb hub in the front of my headset. Never use the power supply to turn on or off basestations. Use lighthouse pm. Its free on android and has full control over them. Also basestations are extremely durable. I have had a basestation fall 2m off a cubboard with a tripod on it and land on its face and after a few seconds it just went back to normal opposition and it kept running. The valve index is sensitive to any noise so slightly flacky 5v on the usb or ripples on the displayport from gpu power sag will cause the mb to stutter in the headset. When playing any high movement games like beatsaver be careful with your controllers because if you rip off your joystic valve will just put it back in with the broken joystick without thumb sence. Also never use the stock cable clip on the back of the headset as it damages cables. Ither rap the cable in a thick layer of electrical tape or use the velcro cable holder that holds the teather balled up in the box inside out as its softer.
I just got mine and I live in EU/Sweden and we have 3 years manufacturing warranty. That means if the cable or base stations or anything breaks down on its own or has defect I can RMA it By law we should get it repaired/ replacement for free.
My base stations have been plugged in and on for over a year with no issues. I have a third party fan on the front of my index. I always play in front of an air conditioner even when it’s cold outside (you’ll get real hot real fast if you don’t). My knuckles controllers are seriously worn out though. Since the controllers are $300 I’m just waiting for the next headset to come out.
I got an index recently and have started to watch these kinds of videos and learning about all of the problems. But I have a question, am I just screwed now? Is the destruction of this headset inevitable? I really like the headset but I’m worried that no matter what I do it’s going to break and $1000 will be wasted

I have a 750 Platinum rated PSU and it's currently running an 8700k with an oc and a 3080 with an oc so I'm hoping I don't rn into any issues there since it's probably pushing it close to max. Have you had any?
Turn down your brightness... everybody probably doesn't realise that having your headest set to 130% brightness can cause major damage and probably that overheating, there are some pretty good settings you can use that prevent harm and you can get lens covers, controller covers and the like to prevent harm. Like any piece of high-end tech, use all the protective shit you can get your hands on.
I've never had any overheating issues, might be caused by using the headset on 144hz all the time as it is an overclock.
#1 NEVER BUY A VALVE INDEX!!! IT SUCKS!!!
I have owned my Headset for a year, and I have never had a single issue with my index or PSU. But I will keep these in mind.
I can imagine how much that costs
me: do lots of research and finally decide on index
this video: its going to break in 15 seconds
me: maybe i'll get a vive...
boys, i have good news, valve now sell cables!!!!!!!
Yaaaaaaaaaaa
Yeaaaaaa
🤔hmm...just got my index these are good tips man..thankyou . I didn't know about the cable pinch when adjusting so thankyou:)
idk, when I just got an Index both me and my friends smashed controllers pretty damn hard both against concrete walls and against each other in beat saber and super hot.
I'm waiting for it to deliver but I will update if any problems with shipping or the Vr occur.
how has two years with the index been?
About the PSU issues. The index runs externally so what your saying and that post isn't true. The reason that was happening is because the card was at max and was pulling more wats then the PSU could handle resulting in lower fps and also PSU whining it has nothing to do with the index itself. Now if this is the case you do not need to upgrade to a new PSU all you need to do is perhaps underclock your GPU a little bit resulting in lower fps but this will fix your PSU whining and should result in more stable frames
This video was quite helpful 🤔 because I am about to buy a index And to be honest I was no fully aware of its fragility so very help👍😁
Excellent video, I ordered a fan for the front it’s a god send
Gethip: Here are some things you shouldn't do with your Valve Index!
Me who owns a Quest 2: Interesting.
@benny7569hey Benny please stop. Thanks buddy
It will cost you 100-150$ though.
are you able to post a link to it?
they have child slavery in china. do not buy from them
Dont power off the base station externally unless it has a problem.
Literally less than a penny. An LED bulb cost an average of $6 to run for a year. A monitor with a gsync module sucks 50w continuously.
@@OrbitaLinx thanks for that I’m really torn I really wanna get it but at same time not
But most likely will idk.
@@OrbitaLinx I see thanks for that explanation
I have my base stations plugged into a couple of Wyze smart plugs . . . I just tell Google to turn them on when I'm getting ready to play and off when I'm done. I highly recommend that setup!
Honestly I have the index pretty much since release and it looks like I have done absolutely everything this video tells you not to do. Until now I had absolutely no problems. Everything still works perfectly.
The only problem was the battery of one of the controller died. But… yeah …. It’s old …. It’s alowed to die. I replaced and and it’s going strong again.
Yah I own an oculus But still I find this entertaining 🤔
Same bruh
Here’s a tip
If you don’t like the elastic that sticks out you can wrap it around 1 time and hook it on the tracking ring
It’s very nice to know about these tips.
Even when I don’t have a VR headset.
had an index over 2 years and 3k hours and a common drunkard in VRC. i have only ever replaced the cable about once a year. i hooked my base stations up and they have never been powered off minus moving stuff or power outages. my controllers are cracked but work fine with zero stick drift so far even with a once or twice beer spill. my headset seems fine and has never over heated even before i had AC in here and it would get 85+f/29+c in my room. the room temp made me quit long before the headset. my left ear piece did die with no luck fixing it so headset required now. i think i have had good luck with my headset considering but my hope for an index 2 is dying haha.
🤔Dope content! Thanks from a new index owner🤔
6:25 THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH THANK YOU
a good tip for the "enter standby mode on shutdown" option for steamVR - If you force close the program, the base stations will not enter standby mode.
God no. Don't get a prebuilt. Please. You can get a much better deal on a custom built.
@@notnicknamed thanks 😊do you have Andy good sites that makes custom pcs
@@kentongamer Custom built is when you build your own. It's like lego for adults. Fairly simple and there is thousands of tutorials out there.
@@notnicknamed thanks 😊
Just ordered my Index yesterday and truly appreciate your video giving me a tip because I'm a very clumsy individual.
POV: you drop your index controller from 0.01 cm. Index controller:*turns into dust*
I really really wanted an Index but thank you! You have saved me a £1000! I will stick with my Quest 2 :)
Just ordered the index kit with everything in it Ik I’m a bit late on the vid but it really helped me out
I have absolutely no idea how to make emojis in RUclips :D
Usually your keyboard has the emoji icon (smily face)
I recently got my index and this really helped
1:34 what game is this and is it on the quest 2?
Pavlov and it is available on the Quest through Sidequest :)
@@GetHip thanks bro
thank you for talking about the thermal issues, and taking the cover off. I just got an index and had no idea.
holy crap that boneworks music at the end just gave me the best nostalgic feeling im gonna go replay it now
Bought for and got my Valve set on my 30 bday
All good, but second day I got em I accidentally hit a hard place of my fireplace, and the joystick got fucked up. This was only second day trying them out jeeeEEEZ
Thanks, very helpful! Especially for such an expensive headset. o-o
Just bought my index 🤔 figured I'd give this a quick watch
I throw my magnetic cover across the room somewhere on the first day and I haven't seen it since.. that was 3 years ago now.. xD
My Index cable lasted a little over 2 years, it had several splits in the cable, the bit where it connected to the headset was so raw and managed I took pictures of it and people said it needed to taken for science to find out how it was still working. It techically still works, so I got it in a draw should anything happen to my new one! :P
With the Base Stations just make sure you use the Bluetooth Power Management and if it sometimes doesn't turn off use the Light House App for either ISO or Android. Turning your Sensors off by the power is a sudden power cut and can and will damage the motor.
I use a faceplate made from 4 different brands just to make one comfortable one, at one point I was using a chinese brand with weak magnets, I'm honestly surprised I haven't scratched them.. :P
I haven't actually owned a PSU before 1000W for about 10 years..
The clip is called "Controller goes to space". xD
🤔 - (Two years later) Thanks for the comprehensive breakdown!
i am saving up for a valve index even though i have a oculus ( i hate when my oculus dies after a hour) so thanks for the information
Me:owns a quest 2
Also me: watches the whole video
Same lol
Same lol
You can get a kiwi front fan for 30 bucks on Amazon if that's one thing I'd get it would be that other than a pulley system. I didn't have heating issues with mine before but just gives me peace of mind
I havent turned of my base stations since i got my index in august 2021 once they are up to full spin the momentum takes most of the strain from the motors
2:12 it's better to screw hooks into your ceiling and put you cable up there for resting
odd, as far as I'm aware valve has been selling the cables ever since the first headsets started going out of warrenty.
🤔 thank you man, I just got the valve index and this has been useful for teaching my siblings not to destroy my new setup
This video reminds me of those commercials for medicine where 90% of it is them talking about all the side effects
I've also wall mounted my base stations rather than placing them on a surface and relying on their rubber feet.
just bought an idex brand new wondered if any of these issues are still prevalent 3 years on
Only one way to find out
🤔 Love the do's and don'ts, hope to get my Index someday soon and use all these tips!
dang i like how he gets to the point straight away i wonder if its true. 🤔
I punched out my window playing drunken bar fight, somehow my controller survived
I don't own a Valve Index as of right now but i am getting one soon and many of the problems that I've looked into for this headset have likely been fixed after some time. 🤔
Valve sells replacement cables now. They have been for a while now
Thanks alot ! My Index is getting shipped soon and this vid really helped. Thanks again !
Mans really promoted a oculus quest 2 giveaway in a index video lmao
Thanks for the tips, my index comes in Tuesday and I've been watching tips and tricks and yours have so far been the most helpful
I know this video is a year old, but I just got an index, so, great video, I'll try to be careful. And I hope u didn't throw up.
So I pay 1100 bucks something for it to have so many issues? Like, the drifting is something that SHOULDN'T exist on something so expensive!
im just gonna try my index that i recently bought. this was very a very useful video... thank you! 🤔
I'm watching this at 3 am whilist having a quest 2 instead of an index, I want to sleep
Great advice , but I don't think that the index causes a 750w psu to whine, that would be the power drawn by your graphics card .
so i dont need to change my psu?
Well the graphics card needs more power because of the headset.
Take the cover of while playing but it on when not for the looks aka when it’s on display
Why doesn't this guy get more views? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 His production quality is incredible!
I never turn off my base station it has been on for the past year now and it works perfect
2 year warranty in the UK and Europe don't forget this guys!
Me without a Valve Index:
INTRESTING
overpower drawing from your gpu makes the psi have to draw more power which can break it in the long run
I don't know how to do a thinking emoji but I watched till the end
I got an index recently and have started to watch these kinds of videos and learning about all of the problems. But I have a question, am I just screwed now? Is the destruction of this headset inevitable? I really like the headset but I’m worried that no matter what I do it’s going to break and $1000 will be wasted
yep
🤔 I’ll keep the base station thing in mind.
this video was really helpful since i just got my headset back from warrenty and i dont want to break again, thanks!
