    Are you tortured right now by the decision to buy the M2 Pro Mac mini or the M1 Max Mac Studio? I'm 50/50 on whether or not an M2-powered Mac Studio comes out in March...

    • @DCuerpoJr
      @DCuerpoJr Год назад +2

      Yes. I held off on purchasing a Mac Studio M1 Max because 1) it didn’t support HDMI 2.1 and I have a 120hz 55” OLED TV that I’d love to use for final color grading. 2) I prefer the smaller size of the Mac Mini because I can stack them as I initially plan to use one solely for exporting photos and videos while I continue editing on the other.
      I thought the dual encoder/decoders on the M1 Max would speed up export times, but it only holds true in select scenarios. Most of the video projects I work on 1-2 hour long multicam recordings in 4K HEVC.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад +1

      That would be an amazing setup, and I totally get it with the space savings of the mini. The HDMI 2.1 upgrade is HUGE for colorists, but I haven't heard many post pros talking about this. Again, they're probably waiting for a Mac Studio or Mac Pro with HDMI 2.1 but still...the mini can handle quite a bit!

      Well I hope we see a M2 Mac Studio becaue the Mac Mini is no buy for me (after measuring my workflow). I need 64GB and for a machine that will run the next 8 years (hopefully) i need more likely a 128GB, especially when i run a 32GB data processing program in a windows virtual machine.

      @@matthewTobrien question, why would 2.1 be better than say a Thunderbolt monitor for colourists? Sorry if I am missing something obvious.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад +3

      Colorists typically have a high quality television monitor to preview their grade and for clients who are in the room to see a large preview. Those monitors are almost all HDMI so having the 48Gb/s of HDMI 2.1 vs the 18Gb/s of HDMI 2.0 is important so as much data can be sent to the preview monitor as possible. And with real time 8K RAW workflows now possible in Resolve on an M-powered Mac, this is more important than ever for post professionals.

  • @Superjeanmarc

    yes but.. Matthew.. Everyone is comparing export times, and I understand its the most "objective" way of comparing performance... BUT, as far as I'm concerned, I'm more interested in knowing how the computer performs while using FCP or Resolve, how many times do you get the deadly beachball, how fluid is the scrolling, importing footage, using SHIFT-F and revealing a clip in the browser (I for example sometimes get long response times on that on my M1 MacMini). My type of work allows me in general to keep exports to the end of the day or before a coffee break, so I'm not so obsessed with export times.. Hope that make sense and you can let us know about your experience. Thanks again

    • @matthewTobrien

      I completely agree! And that process takes a lot of time, a lot of edit sessions, and a lot of figuring out. If you think of this video I just made as part of a series on the M2 Pro Mac mini, you'll feel better about it. I fully intend to make a review video all about how well it performs video editing in FCP. I just need time to put it through its paces.
      These export time tests are just to quickly gauge the power of the M2 Pro in comparison to the M1 Max. Consider this the appetizer to a much larger meal. Don't worry - I've got you covered!

      @@matthewTobrien Lokking forward for this Mat, and yes, I totally get that ... That being said, I'm a a FCP user since version 7 and I have to confess that I'm in the process of switching to Resolve... Havent done any commercial job on it, but I'm almost there.. and I can't wait. I have to say that in term of performances (not exports, but pure UI reactivity) I have the feeling that the current 18.1 version is actually beating fCP on my M1 MacMini... Also, I really started to get tired to feel like stranded on a deserted island with FCP... :) But in any case, I already said and I repeat, I think you have the best FCP content out there, specially when ic comes to workflow, file management, keyboarding, derushing etc.. which is to me, THE big strength of the software, specially for a documentary filmmaker like me, dealing with lots of sometimes caotic footage, full of very long takes..

    Nice comparison! I’m a full time video editor and I’m working with worst codecs ever, my clients sent me GoPro footage, Insta360, DJI drone, iPhones (with is the best in comparison with the rest) and I’m still using an MacBook Pro 16 M1 Pro 16GB RAM. Is very common to see Final Cut Pro using 20GB RAM when editing and up to 50GB RAM when export. But it is take about 16 minute to export a 20 minute blog with color grading, transitions, effects…I’m looking to upgrade but seeing you test, mine is still usable for what I’m doing.

Chris Hocking (created CommandPost) just released BRAW Toolbox for Final Cut Pro which allows you to play BRAW in Final Cut without transcoding.
      Are the export times you're experiencing that are are the same as your 2019 MBPro BRAW clips you're exporting using DaVinci? Or something else?

    I am in the same boat, I can get a Studio Max for 400.00 less than the same spec'ed out Mac mini Pro, but from what I have read, the Studio max is going to be better for FCPX, specially for longer videos and color grading and plugins added on to a timeline. What are you thoughts today? Have you noticed if the Studio Max is "better" or faster since it has more GPU and CPU overall...? My timelines are never really that long and currently using an M1 Air which I love but it does bog down sometimes when adding Dehancer and other effects on a 1-2 minute video. Thanks for any suggestions. I also do not usually use more than one LG 34" Monitor and do not care about the newer wifi since I would probably connect to 10 gigabit ethernet while at home with the Studio.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад

      That is questions. I had a few moments where I went into that in some initial cuts of the video, but I was worried I was getting too into the weeds especially with not having a deeper understanding of the real specs of the two SSDs. I've read that the 1tb is 5.8 GB/s and the 2tb is around 6.5GB/s. If that's the case, even that slight difference - of course - impacts outcomes. I would have loved to test them both with 2TB SSDs but that would have been overkill on the mini. So is it a perfect comparison? Certainly not. And certainly not a competition. Just wanting to show people the results between two quite different computers but two computers that - right now - can be (with customizing the mini) the same price.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад +2

      Yup, I am using Ecamm Live, but I don't like doing my demos or visual aids from the same computer that's hosting the stream. So I route my 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro into a 1080p Dell display and then I route that into my Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro. I can use the ATEM to switch inputs between my main camera and the computer screen. Unfortunately it requires using an app called DispalyLink Manager to get it to work and that lowers the quality of the feed from the monitor to the ATEM. Which sucks. So that's why I got the M2 Pro Mac mini - I'll eventually get a Blackmagic Quad HDMI DeckLink and a PCIe enclosure so I can pipe my HDMI sources directly into the Mac mini. I'll still do all my demos from the MacBook Pro, though.
      I'm new at this, so always curious to know if there's something different I could be doing that would achieve better results.

      @@matthewTobrien , video switchers/mixers are a better option. Unfortunately, 4K video switchers/mixers are all geared toward TV broadcasters or large venue settings and are priced accordingly. If you're ok with 1080p, the Roland VR-1HD is a sleeper product. I also use the Atomos Ninja Cast in a similar way. It's not quite as capable, but you can go VEless (Video Editor - less, as in DAWless). My time is my most precious commodity so I do as little editing as possible. High end video switchers have mix in chroma key effects, Picture in Picture, selective ROI zoom, text effects, video wall features, and much, much more. Eventually, we'll see this sort of tech come down to mere mortal pricing. I'm surprised no one has morphed a Mac Mini into a relatively cheap yet powerful video switcher. For perspective, a $3K video switcher/mixer would be super cheap relative to what's out there now!!

    Great video. For an extra $900, the Studio doesn't seem to be a slam dunk if you're on a tighter budget. The speed benefit isn't that dramatic if you're doing one video at a time. I can see it being a benefit if you're exporting a lot of videos, but in a case like that, I'm probably planning not being at my desk for an extended period of time like for a meal, sleep, or just "clock out" for the rest of the day.
    Personally, the Mini would be fine as I'm still working with a Late 2015 27" iMac. Base model but upgraded to a 2 TB Fusion and I installed 24 GB of memory. Though I work with an external SSD for my Library and export to a external HDD. I've exported to the SSD or the internal but never saw a dramatic difference. At least with long videos. But, just about anything right now would be an upgrade.
    My typical exports to h.264 for a standard video of 10-15 minutes in length can be upwards of an hour or more depending on how complicated I get. For some of my longer videos that can be 30 minutes to an hour (usually interviews), they can take 2-4 hours. So it's possible I'd get a 2x speed bump.
    My cameras are an iPhone 11 Pro (main), iPhone X (B), and a DJI Osmo Pocket (C). But only when I go out into the field for interviews. Otherwise I just use the 11 Pro for studio work. So nothing crazy as far as file format. I use the max settings @ 4k30 h.264 for each device for either FilmicPro (Legacy now) or MoviePro (my current workflow). I do expect to get an iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra as my Main and that will move each iPhone down a letter. My iPhone X is also my actual phone still. Depending on what happens with iOS compatibility with the X, I may use the 11 as my phone later this year.

I was thinking about buying a Blackmagic 4k or 6k pocket camera but I think it's way too much for a B camera so I was thinking of maybe buying those older iPhones that shoot in 4k to be my B camera. What are some iPhones or smart phones in general I can purchase that would make good B cameras for me in the future?
      Keep in mind I'm not a professional photographer or videographer just starting out and slowly looking to grow...

    I did a similar set of tests. I was surprised by how well the Mini did. That said, the seconds and minutes will add up. If your amortized time skews quickly toward the M1 Max Studio, you should really go that route. On client projects, a $1K cost difference will get absorbed within 3 or 4 smallish jobs. I got the Mini because I'll need a very compact setup for some of my field gigs. For conventional desktop use, the M1 Max Studio is a better buy. One other important detail, whether you're getting the Mini or Studio, go with the 1TB drive or higher. The speed boost with these SSD drives doesn't get enough attention and will make a very big difference over the long haul when your shuffling large files around.

      @@alanquach9081 , A 1TB SSD gives you about 6000 MBps versus the others 3500MBps, so almost a 2x boost. The Mini is faster than the Studio with an equivalent SSD! Go with the 1TB SSD.

    Hey man. Been waiting for a followup to this video but you havent dropped it yet so, since I need to get a new mac asap I thought I'd ask: I usually work with multicam footage (sony cameras s-log 2 8 bit), I do a lot of split screens and sometimes green screens with up to 10 angles running at the same time... I currently do everything on an m1 mac mini base model (yeah the 8gb one... dont ask). Been looking at the mac studio base model for sometime now but I noticed that your configuration of the M2 mini could actually work for me too and I'd spend a few hundred less than the studio (and im trying to save money to get the sony fx30). Do you think that te m2 pro mini with 32GB would be enough for me? or should I forget it and just go for the studio? Thanks in advance man!

    What I find interesting is that if you upgrade the M1 MacBook Pro from the base to a M1 Max with the small SSD. There is a 900 difference. If we use that logic, the mini should start at 1100, not 1300. This would push the budget shoppers strongly to Mini M2 Pro. Although real pros like you should probably go for the Studio anyway. Great video!

I am in a bind of going base studio with the added ethernet and extra front ports at $1700 versus going for mini m2 pro with 1 tb and 32 gb ram upgrade for $1740 (with education discount). @pl2514 Год назад +1

      @@matthewTobrien Yes hoping so. I'm wondering though, as when you upgrade the Mac mini M2 Pro chip and level up the Ram to 32Gb to match the Mac Studio M1 Max you hit $1999 and a Mac Studio M2 Max at that price would negate almost all Mac mini m2 pro sales, albeit if you went for those two upgrades. mmm

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Год назад +1

      Exactly. It really doesn't make much sense to upgrade a Mac mini to those specs if you're an "average" desktop user. Where I think it gets interesting is for those media professionals who fill up an entire server rack with these things and they need the smaller form factor vs the Mac Studio. I think there are a lot of outlier use cases in pro media where the mini because of its small size is preferred over the Mac Studio.
      But for the average buyer? It doesn't make much sense to get an upgraded M2 Pro Mac mini if the M2 Max Mac Studio is going to start at $1999.

    • @pl2514
      @pl2514 Год назад

      @@matthewTobrien Yeah I think for that reason Apple will up the entry price Mac Studio if it is an M2 Max, I mean, like I said ,they aren't going to deliberately damage there own sales it doesn't make marketing sense to price your own products out. Currently Apple are kinda suggesting get the Mac Studio M1 Max if you are considering the M2 Pro Mac mini in its upgraded ultimate spec as they clearly want you to buy the Mac Studio given its a year older. I guess we will have to wait and see. I'm leaning towards a Mac mini M2Pro for now as I want the small form factor and see how I get on with it. I mainly do audio and now starting to venture deeper into video editing too. If that work was in reverse I would probably be with a Mac Studio with some of the upgrade boxes ticked! Thanks for your reviews and views by the way, I'll be sure to look in again, thanks man.

    I basically want to shoot videos inside my studio which is well lighted. So I am looking to buy Sony aZV E-10 Mirrorless camera and a lens for my shooting. I want to shoot good quality 4k Videos from it, edit it and release it.
    So basically a Mac Mini M2 Pro (base variant 10 Core CPU, 16 Core GPU, 16 GB RAM) will handle all the 4K video editing of videos from my Sony camera? I will be doing some transitions and little color grading and stuffs. Davinci Resolve or FCP are my choices for the Softwares.

    Very interesting video! Here are my thoughts...
    I'm currently saving money to upgrade from my MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid-2012) with 16GB of RAM & 1TB SSD to buy an M2 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch with 32GB of RAM (was considering 16GB at first) 10‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU & 1TB SSD storage. I want this new laptop to last me for the next 5-7 years.
    I'm also going to upgrade my Mac Mini (2018) with a 3.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 32GB of RAM & 1TB SSD to buy an M1 Max or Ultra Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM, 20‑core CPU, 48‑core GPU & 2TB SSD storage but after watching these tests I'm tempted on waiting for this March Apple Event and hoping for news of an M2 Max & Ultra Mac Studio so I can buy that and pair it with the M2 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch I'm planning on buying in the next 3 to 4 weeks.
    My ideal equipment is:
    FIRST - M2 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch with 32GB RAM, 10‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU & 1TB SSD
    SECOND - M1 or M2 Max or Ultra with 64GB RAM, 20‑core CPU, 32 or 48‑core GPU & 2TB SSD
    I currently have a SONY a7IV that I shoot videos & photos with and the applications I use frequently are Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, FL Studios (for music production) and in the future I'm looking to learn Cinema 4D & DaVinci Resolve.
    What do you think I should do? My plan is that when I purchase the M2 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch with 32GB RAM, 10‑core CPU, 16‑core GPU & 1TB SSD in the next few weeks it will "hold me down" until I buy an M1 or M2 Mac Studio.

      I'd wait to see if M2 Mac Studios come out.
      And your M2 Pro MacBook Pro is more than adequate to cover you while you wait.
      I did something very similar back when the M1 Pro 14" MacBook Pro came out. I was editing primarily off of a 2013 quad-core Mac Pro and my export times were often around 3 hrs for a 12 min RUclips video. I got the M1 Pro MacBook Pro for light editing and final exports, and it was great from October to March when the Mac Studio came out. I think you'll be good to go with that approach!

    I'm waiting for the M2 Max Mac Studio. or maybe the M3 Max. I think after 3nm Apple silicon will be dead. I don't think they will be able to shrink cpu's past 3nm. end up with a high percentage of defective chips or it may be power efficient but not more powerful. power and heat go together. I cant see a 2nm chip more powerful than a 3nm and still stay cool. Intel Raptor 24 core twice as fast as a M1 Max in 4d R23 renders and it sucks a lot of juice and gets hot to get to that 30,000 score vs 15,000 for the M1 Max.

      I actually had a similar thought about adding in some shots of my edit too. The problem with a screen capture is that capturing the screen while performing the tests will dramatically impact the test itself. Could I have cheated it by doing some screen recordings after the tests were complete? Absolutely.
      Ultimately, though, the entire process of the tests themselves is incredibly boring. A dude sitting at a computer with a stopwatch staring at a progress bar. I still need to make the video where I test the mini and my M1 Pro 14” MacBook Pro so I’ll see what I can do to spice it up a bit. Thanks for the input.
