That was hands down the best comparison video of the M2 Mac Mini to the M2 Pro Mac Mini that I have seen. You did an amazing job of being clear and concise while describing options and the pros and cons of each. I don't know what you do for a living, but teaching would seem to be a great fit. I have been using my M1 MacBook Pro for the heart of my recording studio for the last year. I decided that I wanted to get a Mac Mini to replace the laptop so I could have the laptop ready for remote recording. This video help to clarify what it is I need vs what I want. I have decided to go with the M2 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 32 gig of memory and a 1TB SSD storage. The reason for the increase in memory is the amount of audio plug-ins I use with Cubase Pro. I checked my MacBook Pro M1 and I am using 400 gig of my 1 TB drive so a 1 TB drive over a 512 gig is a no-brainer for me. I keep all of my samples, video editing and non essential data on one of my 2 TB external Thunderbolt 4 drives. You are correct the external are much less expensive than upgrading the Mac Mini to a 5 TB machine. Thanks for making this video it is excellent.
From my perspective the reasons to go for the Pro over the base model are: (1) 4 vs 2 thunderbolt ports, (2) 512 vs 256 base storage, (3) HDMI 2.1 vs 2.0 display ports ... in that order.
I went with the M2 Pro, and honestly feel like I'm not using the extra power at all. Mostly wanted the extra I/O and display capabilities, but from a performance perspective the base model probably would have met my needs just fine.
Great video. It was very pleasant to listen to, and I like the straight forward way you explain things. No dramatic editing or bad jokes, just informative. I appreciate that.
I seldom comment on videos, but I just had to take the time to compliment you for how well-done this video is. I wish more tech reviewers were like you.
5:14 Correction: M2 Pro can not be upgraded. It can be ordered with a higher spec chip. So, you have to decide that when ordering. No upgrade is possible after the purchase! Very important distinction compared to standard PC where you can actually replace lower end CPU for higher spec one.
Great detail on the exact two and three monitor combinations, I had not seen this explained as well elsewhere. Also the cost per GB storage was nicely shown in a graphic 👏🏽
I think the M2 Pro mini is ideally situated for folks who want more power than the base model mini but don't need the extra power and expense of the Studio Max.
I was about to settle for the regular one, but then I found out that HDMI 2.1 was only on the Pro, and since I use my LG CX as a display, I just had to make sure I got the full 4k120hz or I would go nuts.
I just use a USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapter, and I'm getting 4K 120Hz 10-bit HDR 4:4:4 with my LG C2. It just requires a quick firmware update that currently only runs on Windows. But after that hack, it works perfectly and you'll never have to worry about it anymore. That said, built-in official HDMI 2.1 has advantages. It works officially out of the box, without any glitches, and you don't need to worry about hacking the firmware. Especially if you don't have a fairly modern PC with a USB-C port.
@@latinochico 120Hz 4K 10-bit works perfectly. Warranty of what? The $50 adapter? Maybe, I don't care. It certainly won't damage anything. The firmware is very easy to apply, but you must apply the correct file, otherwise you'll have a hard time reflashing it. You're applying the firmware to the $50 adapter, not on the Mac or the OLED TV. The only difficulty is you must flash the firmware from a Windows machine with a USB-C port, and if that's not available, it's a pain to install Windows on a Mac. I don't have an M2 Mini, I have an M1 MacBook Pro.
The worst case scenario is that you apply the wrong firmware (the DisplayPort firmware on the HDMI adapter), after which the adapter will seem dead. Although the Microsoft Store has a free firmware flash tool that can still install the correct firmware and everything is working again. I would say chances of damaging your Mac or LG C2 TV is pretty much zero. First of all, the TV is capable of doing 4K 10-bit 120Hz, nothing special there. The Mac is capable of doing it as well, except not via HDMI. So it's not like you're doing something out of spec. The new firmware makes your Mac believe it's not an HDMI port connected to it, and it'll open up a feature that it was supposed to do anyway.
Great comparison of the two models, personally I wish the Studio would be available with the M2 Pro chip. For myself I will probably buy the M2 Pro fairly maxed out to future proof my purchase. I currently have a 2012 I7 iMac with the 3TB fusion drive and 32GB of memory. I would be extremely happy to get 10+ years out of my next purchase especially since I am coming up on my 67th birthday soon!
You gave the very best review I think I have ever seen on any product. Not long winded, to the point and a fantastic monetary break down. BRAVO and thank you.
This is my first time on your channel & you sir are a pleasure, you were so concise & so easy to understand that you are now my go to advisor...now an official subscriber, thank you!
I want to thank you for such a good and through review. I have been vacillating back and forth for a couple weeks trying to decide which to get or even if I should get the studio and this review was direct and to the point. You zeroed in on what the differences "truly" are and quantified what the cost differences actually paid for. Thanks, this is one of the BEST reviews on the net I have seen. You have helped me make the decision. Thanks. 🙂
Thank you for a great comprehensive study on the differences and the cost effectiveness of purchasing these Mac Mini's. It was a valuable video for me.
Thanks for making one of the best comparison videos on RUclips for a Mac Mini (or for that matter, any product!) So refreshing after watching all the BS intro/outro/1 min of nonsense before arriving at the content type videos. You earned a subscriber!
Great video! I just ordered the M2 Pro model. I have two LG Ultrafine 4K displays which this Mac mini will work very well with. I run a VMs a lot. I work from home and I use my own computer for work. I felt that the higher performance mode was a better investment.
Although I'm not necessarily a "power user" (do a little bit of Final Cut and Adobe Lightroom) but I went with the M2 Pro to help future proof it to last longer. Had it for about 2 weeks and loving it! Works fantastic with the Studio Display.
Pointing out that a good comparison between the two base models is to think of what an extra $300 gets instead of the total price difference was a really helpful way think of it. Thank you!
Maybe a bit less spec reading and a bit more analysis. But at about 10 minute mark you do about the best explanation I've seen about how the SSD speed interacts with the RAM and being in a RAM swap scenario (which will happen often if you only have 8gb RAM). This is a very confusing thing about these Macs and few people understand what is going on here.
Highly useful comparison video clear and concise. By far the best review content. Opting for the base M2 don’t need the extra ports and HDMI 2.1 on the pro. Bumping up ram and storage to future proof. Really helpful
Extremely helpful and clearly presented comparison, thank you! Absolutely worth it for me to go for the M2 Pro 16 / 512, and expand storage with inexpensive fast SSD drives.
I picked the m2 mini 16gb 256gb version and purchased a 1tb pcie 3 4x ssd with a thunderbolt 40Gb casing for less than 160 euros. It has over 3100 mbytes/s transfer rate. Problem solved. The 16gb ram is a must have for music creation in Logic.
Fantastically detailed comparison with very strong reasoning. As I currently ”sit on the fence” between M2, M2 Pro and the Mac Studio - I truly appreciate it. Thanks!

Very thoughtful & logical review. Thank you for sharing. I would like to see a video explaining cpu & gpu & real life samples of what the differences in those sizes would mean.
That was a great review/comparison. Really thorough, really concise, and really well-organized. I bought the M2 Pro/1TB/16GB for music production. Hoping the RAM won’t be a limitation with large virtual instruments (pianos, NI strings, etc).
I just bought an M2 base model - but can fully appreciate the advantage an M2 Pro would offer. I’m only using it for browsing and university assignments, so should be totally fine. Great video!!
This was a really good video thank you I'm currently trying out the base model Mac Mini from Costco which is awesome because I have up to 90 days to use it
Excellent video. I was about to pull the trigger on the Pro version, but I'm convinced I don't need it. I'll be buying the base model. Thanks, you've just saved me a lot of money!
I'm currently using a fully maxed out 2012 27 imac with 500gb SSD and 32gb ram and it's getting a bit old. Would a mac mini m2 pro and my choice of display be a worthy upgrade? I'm not into any graphics intensive video editing but have a home based project studio running Logic, Protools and a stack load of third party plug ins. Is the 512gb SSD and 16gb RAM of the Mac Mini m2 Pro enough for a machine to be used solely for music production that's future proofed for at least a few years? Your advice is much appreciated and keep up the great work.
Hi, just found and subscribed to your channel, great video's, addictive watching! What would be great to see is if you could do a video advising about what screens to buy to add to a mac mini. Currently I have two x 22 inch old NEC screens on an old Mac Mini (2013 with upgraded ram and storage and ssd disk but after 8 years its time is up) but as a web designer/developer I definitely need more screen space. I don't know whether to go for 3 x 27 inch or to get a single wide monitor or even two wide monitors stacked. And can a Mac Mini handle two wide monitors? And do wide monitors have software built in on how you can size windows on the screen or is it all just drag to resize? There are other video's out there about display port hubs for Mac Minis. The options are endless and confusing. I need a lot of screen real estate, I commonly have five or six different things open to complete one process task. I need good quality screens that represent the website colours well that will not break the bank! Thank you for your work and content. It is really valuable.
Great and informative video. I was wondering if there any issues connecting to a 49inch ultra wide with either the base or pro model. I was looking at the LG 49WQ95C-W as a productivity monitor. Also which connection from Mac mini to monitors I should use?
*A 49” ultra wide monitor is too small due to Apple’s scaling. You’ll need at least a 55” in order to overcome the scaling issue. You’ll need to upgrade to Studio Max in order to output to a large monitor.* *Lastly, you should be able to connect the monitor through the USB-A port for higher resolution and refresh rate.*
@@Brian_______ Thanks for your video, best one yet explaining the Mac Mini choices, I to want a ultrawide monitor, and i was looking at the LG 40WP95C-W , which is a 5K2K display? Would this be a better choice? and would it best be connected via Thunderbolt?
@@davem3325 *Thank you for the kind words. I try my best to contribute to the RUclips community through these videos. The LG you referenced is a great monitor choice to pair with the mac mini. I’d recommend using usb-c to mini-HDMI to connect to the Mac mini. Trust me - you can thank me later.*
Very Useful Video, Thanks, If I edit an hour long 4k 60fps videos for my gaming channel, is the Mac mini M2 base model which is 256 GB and 8 GB is enough? or should I go for Pro version?
Thanks for the video, I am mainly a FCPX and Davinci Resolve user with not really huge project timelines but 4K video, I am wondering if I should future proof and get the Mac mini Pro or just get the Mac mini m2 with 32 gigs of ram, From what I understand only Adobe After Effects uses more CPU and GPU otherwise I should be fine with the M2 not the pro? Any thoughts? AT the moment I have an M1 Air and it works quite well but does bog down sometimes on some edits in FCPX which I imagine either the M2 or Pro could handle much better and I have a 4K display at home..

@@Brian_______ thanks for reply, why not use thunderbolt? im planning on getting the M2 PRO mac mini
Very thorough and complete comparison. thank you
Very Useful Video, Thanks, If I edit an hour long 4k 60fps videos for my gaming channel, is the Mac mini M2 base model which is 256 GB and 8 GB is enough? or should I go for Pro version?
Man... you are a gem, you call a spade a spade, gotta love that, I've had it with apple since 90s
wow! great review. i will use this information to decide which model to purchase. thank you.
