  • This Subnautica documentary details the development of the indie video game Subnautica and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how the developer Unknown Worlds did Early Access right with the development of Subnautica. The documentary explores why the game is a showcase for how to successfully apply a transparant game development approach. Unknown Worlds is currently applying everything they learned from the development of Subnautica to its sequel Subnautica: Below Zero.

I think Subnautica kind of perfected and demonstrated how to properly do early access. Since this game there have been many more early access successes, most following a very similar strategy: staying transparent and open, fostering a strong community, taking community feedback and implementing it, making a distinguishing identity, making sure to keep a steady pace of development, and avoid high pay walls or micro-transactions (some cosmetics can be gotten away with if the game is free). It seems we have entered a new era in gaming in which small indie developers can and will out do AAA developers thanks to their more creative ideas and use of this early access strategy.

I hope so. It's discouraging seeing promising games continually pushing release date again and again until it reaches irrelevance. Like Routine. Some solid looking trailers and then... just nothing. I don't think they even touch their social media anymore. It's also annoying seeing the other extreme like what No Man's Sky first was, until they were on the wrong side of what almost became a belligerent mob.

Yet in Subnautica, both can be true. Depends on what you're doing in the game at the time. I'd highly recommend it if you haven't played it before.
Swimming out over a ledge into the open water in Subnautica perfectly captures the same feeling as swimming at sea the real world. It's fantastic, but terrifying.
On the other hand, you've got the cave systems that can be just as scary but in a different way.
It's a wonderful game to explore, but must really be done at your own pace.

while i enjoy other games similar to subnautica in its genre like the forest for example or whatever game that has crafting and survival, i think subnautica is one of those really unique experiences. its beautiful, calming, and spiritual. like i can just float through this world and be at peace even though there is a reaper lurking a few hundred meters away. on the flipside it does an amazing job of the opposite with fear, panic, confusion, and terror. its not even a hard game compared to others but you can still feel genuine panic at certain moments. first time getting lost in some caves with oxygen quickly ticking down, a silhouette of a leviathan in the distance, or the first time you run into those octobrain cthulu things. of course we cant forget that moment you go the edge and see endless abyss and a ghost leviathan.

Every developer to my knowledge is having public testings of the game where the selected people have to sign NDAs but they are outside the company and providing feedback and developers monitor them on how they interact with the game what is working, where they are lost what they do not understand and sometimes even crazy bugs because of stuff random people will try in the game that developers and internal testers never thought of testing.
So there is some feedback for majority of games but under NDAs so you do not know much about it happening and also if you are developing story heavy game it is hard to do early access to prevent spoilers and crazy theories by community and so on, same for mystery focused games and so on. And just creating prototype after every change in game mechanics would take too much time so you just once in a while create such prototype for testing under NDA to get some feedback but you cannot just release it to public. Especially with so many clever people looking into your code and looking for anything not shown in prototype but present in code so basically you have to spend a long time on any alpha version if you want to keep secrets that are otherwise inherent in the game.

Let me tell you as an EA player of Subnautica, this video is 100% accurate. There was a lot of back and forth between the devs and the EA players, there were some features that were added because we pointed out issues that detracted from the experience. At one point there was no fish entity respawning which eventually lead to very empty worlds, devs took note of the complaints/requests and said adding that feature in a realistic manner would take time. Well, they listened and took the time to add fish breeding mechanics for non large fish. There were moments that features we loved were scrapped (terraforming tools were a HUGE thing the community didn't want to lose but did) but we all understood it was for a better experience.
No joke, that was an amazing thing to be apart of and help grow.

Subnautica still has a VR mode. The might have taken it out at some point, but it seems they put it back in, since it's listed as an option on the store page and it supported it last I played it. The game is SUPER-immersive in VR, an excellent way to lose yourself in the game! There's a few bugs here and there, like you can't interact with specific panels but it works really well.

Then suddenly he starts an video off with this new game, with bright vibrant colours and an amazing sound track. standing next to dayz dull washed out colour scheme and familiar gameplay it was instantly captivating. i think i bought it that day. it was still early access and the core game wasnt there but exploring was scary and the fresh new take of survival was oozing. well done to the team behind it.

I followed Subnautica's development for a long time and saw it evolve through numerous updates. Being able to test out daily builds at the same speed the devs are developing was a new concept for me. Even seeing the roadmap of what they were planning, what being worked on, and what was recently completed was so unexpected and different. Most developers keep everything a secret until the project is nearly complete. The game even had a feature to allow screenshots and comments to help users report bugs and glitches to the devs (or to just provide some positive feedback). It makes me wonder how a game like Fallout 4 could have been affected if they allowed players to provide feedback during the development process.

There are certain points in the game where you are stretched very thin. You end up going as deep as possible with your current oxygen restrictions and available vehicles. • @May-gr8bp

I beat the game twice; once in 2019 and once in 2020. SPOILERS AHEAD BTW IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED SUBNAUTICA
Both times I followed the same strategy. Build base and vehicles; get renewable food from floating island; venture into aurora; Venture into lost river (I prefer to enter it at the north west blood kelp zone adjacent to the dead zone); find the other 3 alien structures (Research lab, thermal thing, PCF) and do the sea emperor thing
The game had already been spoiled for me because I watched most of thinknoodles' LP before playing, but that wasn't too bad because I didn't see the ending until I did it.
Reapers generally spawn in the Crash Zone, Mountains and dunes. During BOTH LPs, I had only 2 reaper encounters. Twice, I accidentally entered the dunes (thinking it was safe) and saw a reaper. They are one of the most dangerous creatures.
A good tip is to never visit mountains nor dunes. They are not required to beat the game. I only went into the aurora twice each LP, and you should always approach from the North East Mushroom forest. The crash zone adjacent to there doesn't actually have reapers often.
I'd say reapers are scarier and as dangerous as ghost leviathans, but ghosties have weaker juvenile versions and they are not stealthy; they are bioluminescent. Reapers are invisible in dark water and therefore much likelier to sneak up on you if you don't listen for the roars.
