I had no idea what a staggering and personal journey this game has been for the team of dedicated creators that brought it into being. Thank you for sharing their story and broadening my horizons. You are forgiven for the clickbait title :D
Video game production, as a whole, eats and chew up people. It's one of the most complex product that can be made, requiring all of its many complex components to be equally high-quality: art, programming, marketing, music, player education (tutorial and ramping player challenge), etc. etc.
its often the story behind a lot of the best games ever made. Often times you will hear it was an accident, something that was under funded, barely made it to market, and didn't have the backing you would expect of an amazingly successful game. The original WarCraft and Blizzard studio's was like that, they even went through several different names and change in leadership, almost going broke in each exchange. I think its the interest in making something great and not having expectations to be held to, is often risky but also makes for the best games possible.
That's how I feel about Crypt of the Necrodancer, at first I didn't because of the loading screens but with the recent update I can play without troubles.
@@juanrodriguez9971 I should also play that because I have the Zelda one which I haven’t played much but I could play the original because my brother has it on steam
Enter the gungeon is the kind of game that I play once and then leave it for weeks just to play it again when I randomly remember that I have the game installed on my computer
Really amazing to hear their story! I've got 100+ hours on Enter The Gungeon, it's just one of my all time favorites now. And there really are thousands and thousands of intricate details in everything in that game, so no wonder it took so long to develop! I think the game turned out absolutely perfect though
It's god tier when it comes to product quality. Bought it to play with my GF at the time and have easily put 200 hours into it. True masterpiece no doubt.

This story was a blast to hear about! As someone who's played Gungeon since release day over 6 years ago, with 420 hours combined across PS4 and PC, I adore it. From the mechanics to the music (did I mention the theme song kicks ass?), the gunplay to the Gungeoneers, everything just goes so well together and it really shows. While tough for new players at first, once you get used to dodge rolling and weapons (and their rarities), you'll be blasting Bullet Kin like a pro (pun intended). Beating pasts is no easy feat (The Pilot's past was the hardest for me), and unlocking the secret characters (Bullet, Robot, Gunslinger and Paradox) takes time, but once you do it, the feeling of accomplishment washes over you and it's so good. It took me 3 years to get the Platinum trophy but damn it was worth it. I even have a t-shirt of the Advanced Gungeons and Dragon art, it's incredible. The community is amazing too, from the fanart to the animations. Thank you Dodge Roll Games for making one (bullet) hell of an experience for myself and others to dodge roll into. One of my all time favorite games! I'm surprised you didn't mention Exit the Gungeon as that's probably the game they were talking about that was in the Gungeon universe. It's a sidescroller Gungeon game released in 2020. So amazing a scrappy and dedicated team can create such a masterpiece!

I'm not surprised at all that it went so well for them. When you have such a clear and concise idea from the start work is so much easier. No matter what kind of project you're working on. And they definitely aced the difficult but fair, there is honestly only 1 or two rooms I can think of in the hundreds of hours of play, and probably close to a thousand of watching in the entire game that aren't completely fair, and doable with nothing but the starter gun with enough time and effort. They're such a prominent face in the indie sphere because they earned it with quality, hardwork, and great ideas. I truly hope whatever they come out with next they stick to their guns (no pun intended) and release something with just as much care and thoughtfulness put into it. No matter how long it takes :3 thank you for the video, it was a good watch

It's crazy to think about that Devolver took a chance like they did on Dodge Roll. Out of money but sitting on an amazing premise with the will to make it happen, and then your publisher goes "Hey, here's the money you need to finish" Devolver knew they had a hot round in the chamber.
SO STOKED to see you did a vid on this game and studio! Enter the Gungeon deserves every bit of praise it gets. While I'm not clamoring for a 2nd one to be made. it would be so dope to get another DLC. We can dream can't we?
Everytime I hear the opening music to enter the gungeon, I get chills. This game goes so much harder/deeper than it has any right to. The details are so finely crafted, to the point this game is on the level of much more serious games emotionally. I'd go so far as to say it's on par with MGS on the emotional level, and on any other level (gameplay, graphics, music) it meets or exceeds that very high bar. A masterpiece on every level, I love this game.
Hey Glen, I don't know if you take suggestions for what you should cover here in the comment section, but I'd love to see you make a video on Vampire Surviros. It's amazing how this game no one expected no one expected to do much more than return the development cost blew up thanks to being legitimately interesting and having enough eyes on it early. The Dev team has been super communicative and transparent in their updates and honestly, I wish I had enough time to read them all because I find it super interesting. And that's where you come in!
@@ThatGuyGlen No, thank you for hearing me out! I hope there's enough there to make a good video, I'd be over the moon if I directly influenced one of my favorite RUclipsrs to make a video!
Easily one of my favorite indie games. It’s so good that I’ll even go so far to say that it’s in my top ten favorite games of all-time. Dodge Roll knocked it out of the park with Gungeon. I’m excited to see what they’re working on as a follow up and if it’s even half as good as gungeon it would still be an incredible game. If anyone out there is curious about playing it and haven’t yet, I highly recommend it.
@@ryno4ever433 I’m familiar with the game and I played it. From what I understand, Dodge Roll is currently working on their next big follow-up game to the Gungeon franchise. So I was referring specifically to that as of yet unannounced game.
Yo for any of you guys wishing you could get more gungeon. Good news, there a few games out there that might just scratch that itch I want to point out 3 here 1. Nuclear throne. a difficult rouglike with a very unique style. the combat is engaging and responsive and a game that is overall just so fun I can't do it justice in a RUclips comment 2. Dead estate. A small run and gun rouglike initially started on new grounds. The game takes elements from binding of Isaac such as room design enemies and secrets and combines it with the weapons and equipment from gungeon and puts it together in its own style very much fitting of new grounds. You can actually still play the initial build for dead estate on New grounds for free to see if you are interested in the full game on steam. Which is worth it in my opinion. The game has some really catchy music and very memorable characters and moments that are definitely with your time. And finally 3.Soul knight. A free to play mobile game that has no right to be as good as it is. A top down run and gun rouglike with characters that wildly Change your play stile We all know what mobile games are like now days but this has an incredible amount of content and depth. It has no ads but Unfortunately it still has micro transactions. However these aren't pay to win and more optional characters to provide variation and spice your runs up and you can easily get the full experience by playing smart rather than paying your way to victory. This is not your average mobile game however so you will need some level of storage for the game to run. This game isn't perfect and if you are dead set on never touching mobile games it's obviously not for you but if you have an open mind this game can be really enjoyable

Thank you for making this video! Enter the Gungeon is easily one of my favorite games, having played over a thousand hours of it and also delving in Modded content as well. I never knew the game I loved so much had a rich history of it's development process. I remember watching NL & Cobalt playing the game when it came out as well, when they finally managed to beat the game and get the gun that could kill the past.. I remember none of them had any idea what the gun looked like yet but earlier that run somebody made a joke saying 'what if it was just a gun with the barrel pointed backwards' and it was!! It was honestly what I think cemented this game as my top favorite game of all time.
not sure why i was surprised to hear kenta cho and bulletML mentioned in a video about the creation of enter the gungeon, but i remember playing kenta cho's games back in the day and having a look at bulletML and thinking it was wild
I just read some comments and I don't sure if no one mentioned it but,Dodge Roll already did their sequel to Enter the Gungeon,it's called Exit the Gungeon, the game where you travel through floors on the elevator in 2D and fighting enemies and bosses
Hey! I had just watched a video about the wild wild lore behind this game and all of its secrets. Perfect timing, and I didn't ever expect it to be covered on this channel even!
I have Enter the Gungeon because I friended a random person on steam and they gifted it to me. I'm not as big of a fan of DND bullet heck types (other than literally any of Toby Foxes games) so after dying to 2 different bosses in a row I was just done with it. Good job on the team though!
I had no idea these devs were so incredibly fucking cool. these are the type of dudes that I wouldn't even be surprised if I had a conversation somewhere online with given how many of our interests specifically in games completely intersect. Neat video!
Well we already know that there is an "Exit the Gungeon" as a 2D side-scrolling sequel to this one. I think it already had been released by the time you posted this video.
EtG is absolutely one of my favorite games of all time. I have 1200+ hours of play time, and more and more gets added nearly every day. This was a great little documentary to watch. I was not at all familiar with the history or the people behind the game I enjoy so much. I was also surprised to learn that there is an EtG arcade cabinet. I see that I can buy one for about 6 grand, so, I am going to start saving a little bit. It would be sick to have that sitting in the living room or game room. I get confused when games like Isaac or Nuclear Throne receive so much love even though EtG is (in my humble opinion) better on just about every metric than those two; just the lore of EtG is incredible. You can tell a lot of love went into the crafting of this game. I will look forward to see what Dodge Roll comes out with next.
It says this video was posted one month ago, but Dodge roll has since enter the Gunjan released “exit the Gunjan”. Do we know if they’re working on a game after that?
Dodgeroll-"Obviously there are fans who will say that there are definitely still some bits of BS in the game, but we tried our best to minimize that stuff." also Dodgeroll-Makes Ammoconda
Ammoconda is one of the easy bosses that people really seem to struggle with for some reason. Doing more boss runs might be a good way to get to that point where the fight becomes obvious and intuitive.
Watching this after Exit the Gungeon has come out, there's a funny feeling of nostalgia for the "What's next?!" we all felt then. It's cute in retrospect~ 😆

Love this game so much
My pleasure!
I remember hearing about Gungeon in college, buying it on a whim because I was starting to get into indies, and then sinking hundreds of hours into the game over the years and multiple platforms. Love this little game that could, and still play it to this day.
This made me cry like 3 times, thank you so much for the wonderful coverage of one of my favorite games of all time
This video made you cry?
I played enter the gungeon once a few years ago on gamepass with my brother and my friend, and it was an absolute blast.
3000 hours in this game, one of the best ever, thank you for this awesome tale
My pleasure!
how? nobody plays 3k hours without the game becoming boring
@@DamageMaximo I’ve speedrun the game for years since it’s release I have multiple times on the leaderboards I own every digital and physical copy of the game even limited editions. ive just gone deeper into the game than you probably thought was possible, advanced understanding of all synergies, weapon stats etc
@@DamageMaximoit’s a rogue like, you absolutely can
they need to add multiplayer feature in it
It's crazy to think about that Devolver took a chance like they did on Dodge Roll. Out of money but sitting on an amazing premise with the will to make it happen, and then your publisher goes "Hey, here's the money you need to finish"
Devolver knew they had a hot round in the chamber.
I've been speedrunning this game for years, and it makes me so happy to see something awesome about it
SO STOKED to see you did a vid on this game and studio!
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll look into it!
@@ThatGuyGlen No, thank you for hearing me out! I hope there's enough there to make a good video, I'd be over the moon if I directly influenced one of my favorite RUclipsrs to make a video!
Today I learned that Broforce was published by Devolver. That is the least surprising thing I have learned recently
"Why would anyone want to enter the gungeon"
"to get the gun that will kill the past." so fucking cool, so fucking badass.
I love this game so much, and it really shows how much effort and care the team put into making it the best game that they could.
Love this game. Really sad it doesn't get updated anymore.
They already made Exit the Gungeon. Like years ago.
@@ryno4ever433 I’m familiar with the game and I played it. From what I understand, Dodge Roll is currently working on their next big follow-up game to the Gungeon franchise. So I was referring specifically to that as of yet unannounced game.
Didn’t dodge roll make a sequel “exit the gungeon”
Yeah
This is legit my favourite channel at the moment! Awesome work!
Thank you, awesome to hear that!
herring that the devs were fa ns of PMD just warms my heart.
Yo for any of you guys wishing you could get more gungeon. Good news, there a few games out there that might just scratch that itch
I want to point out 3 here
1. Nuclear throne. a difficult rouglike with a very unique style. the combat is engaging and responsive and a game that is overall just so fun I can't do it justice in a RUclips comment
And finally
3.Soul knight. This game isn't perfect and if you are dead set on never touching mobile games it's obviously not for you but if you have an open mind this game can be really enjoyable
youtube reads my mind way too much, just woke up from an enter the gungeon dream an hour ago, eat, come back to thinking about gungeon as im finishing and then click on youtube, this was the first video on my feed, literally AS im thinking about gungeon, ik i watched 2 or 3 videos about the game the other day so it's fresh on youtubes algorithm for me but it's still eerie
My pleasure! Always makes me happy reading passionate comments like yours :D
This is my favorite game of all time with 350+ hours to date. SO great to see love for it still!
You a fan of Huey Lewis or something?
Amaaaaaazing 👌💎
Beautifully made video.
Keep up the great work and keep these brilliant videos coming Glen 👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much for the kind words, more videos are definitely coming! ;)
the EtG style editing looks really clean hope you keep it up
Thank you and will do!
One of my favorite games just beat all 4 pasts for the character now on the road to gunslinger
not sure why i was surprised to hear kenta cho and bulletML mentioned in a video about the creation of enter the gungeon, but i remember playing kenta cho's games back in the day and having a look at bulletML and thinking it was wild
Mixing a lot of game in one, in a perfect way
that is Very Cool
i’ve had this game for 3 years and have yet to even get close to beating it
My favorite gun that's based on pop culture is the wind up gun from Futurama! 😃 it plays the little "pop goes the weasle" toon when you reload!
Hearing the story for this game is so fucking based.
Ad ends 4:57
I just read some comments and I don't sure if no one mentioned it but,Dodge Roll already did their sequel to Enter the Gungeon,it's called Exit the Gungeon, the game where you travel through floors on the elevator in 2D and fighting enemies and bosses
Hey! I had just watched a video about the wild wild lore behind this game and all of its secrets. Perfect timing, and I didn't ever expect it to be covered on this channel even!
I just got back into playing Gungeon, impeccable timing
I have Enter the Gungeon because I friended a random person on steam and they gifted it to me. I'm not as big of a fan of DND bullet heck types (other than literally any of Toby Foxes games) so after dying to 2 different bosses in a row I was just done with it. Good job on the team though!
I love playing it high as hell then going into the world first person
I already loved this game from the beginning, and the video made me love it even more.
I think it already had been released by the time you posted this video.
the best thing ive seen in years hooters and gaming in one place
also great amazing story i love how you perfectly explain the entire story of how the game came to pass
here I go installing it again, feels awesome to see how big of a deal this game is, truly a masterpiece
This was some top tier production on the video design and information presented. I loved this game and I loved learning about it from you!
Thank you very much, glad you liked it!
Please make factorio, oxygen not included, rimworld, dwarf fortress, katana zero
Even the word 'Gungeon' is one of the most banging ass puns I've heard in my entire life!
The games this video mentioned is essentially a list of games I might like to play
how you go from something as amazing as enter the gungeon to their uhh.. sequel/prequel is astounding
It says this video was posted one month ago, but Dodge roll has since enter the Gunjan released “exit the Gunjan”. Do we know if they’re working on a game after that?
6:25 Ooohh this is giving me some big nostalgia and a desire to play games again
Enter the gungeon is such a amazing game and great video man!
I just ordered Mr beast boargar and I am high on druugs
Dodgeroll-"Obviously there are fans who will say that there are definitely still some bits of BS in the game, but we tried our best to minimize that stuff." also Dodgeroll-Makes Ammoconda
Ammoconda is one of the easy bosses that people really seem to struggle with for some reason. Doing more boss runs might be a good way to get to that point where the fight becomes obvious and intuitive.
Wow, amazingly edited, paced, and scripted. Didnt even realize what the title meant until the moment passed
Watching this after Exit the Gungeon has come out, there's a funny feeling of nostalgia for the "What's next?!" we all felt then. It's cute in retrospect~ 😆
"If you get hit you know why"
Hutts: WHA, HOW DID I GET HIT?
Preemptively leaving a like and a comment for your efforts. Keep up the amazing work!
Much appreciated and will do!
20:41 Yeeeee, but he could also just be team cherry. Their strategy (don't say anything until we will have our game ready) also works, because they don't have to stress about release date. LOL Good video btw.
One of my most played and favorite games of all time. Bless them.
Ugh, I had forgotten what they did to Dungeon Keeper, thanks for reminding me.
the ETG artstyle always reminded me of the castle crashers box art.
oh man I totally forgot about the cog of battle, I was immediately like wait, I've used the active reload in EtG...
Great video! I always like to watch this kind of documentary videos about any theme of my interest, and yours was truly amazing.
