One thing Ive noticed his how similar the pre alpha build is to the final game, graphically speaking. A lot of what it lacks is just the lighting. They already had the main ideas for designs like the Seamoth and Cyclops way early in development, too. Amazing to see these builds come to life!
Yeah it's actually really cool to see how much of it was already realized :)
A little scary as well to think about how this absolute gem of a game might not be as popular of they hadn't changed some things. Also awesome to appreciate how far they have come.
@@TheLastBaconidk what to say but did you found this build on reddit? Or on discord? Because im the guy who did that!
I’ve heard so much about the 2D aurora so I’m glad to finally see it, I don’t think this series can continue from here but it’s been really cool to see this stuff archived
Yeah now I want to continue going "forward" like with the previous videos :) Still need to find the headless body in the lava zone!
@@TheLastBaconthe version of the body in the lava zone should be the Jul 2016, i Remember see It somewhere on YT
@@TheLastBacon That's a thing ?!?
Damn I understand why there are creepy pastas about this game now.
This is nightmare fuel. 😖
IKR
@@TheLastBaconthe what?!??
It's very interesting that the Aurora is a 2D image that almost looks just like the finished one. They had a really good idea what they wanted to do early on, and stuck with it
Yep absolutely! So cool to see :)
Honestly that aurora model and the way it’s angled in the water looks really good, surreal to see this again after all these years
True it does look really cool :)
I have a theory about the light rays in the void. It may be the place where effects are generated before being teleported to their proper positions. Some games like Halo 2 use a system like this, where, instead of having to make new effects every place they are needed, they just have them in one place and teleport them to the places they need to be. It’s really interesting that subnautica mightve been like this at some point
Huh that is a really interesting system! I wonder :)
A lot of games do this. It's to counter the need to load in new assets with how slow hard drives and disks are at fetching data. Some games like the Wind Waker also just shrink things down to barely visible till you approach it like the chu chus.
These kinds of techniques may become less prevalent with the commonality of SSDs and just having more RAM.
Ah yes, I remember way back that they showed this in a tent booth on Pax East 2014. Time flies.....
Crazy that it was almost 10 years ago :O
It's interesting to see how many of the games initial concepts made it into the final release. You can really see how the game evolved over time!
Yeah it’s crazy how much of it was already in a good state back then :)
@@TheLastBaconHey, if you didn't already know iAletho is also a youtuber, it would be awsome if you two collaborate
It's the Apple product man :o
@@TheLastBaconyeah I was so surprised how much of the stuff was already in the game.
3:06 Riley's predecessor really wanted to get out of there didn't he?
(They created the lava zone back then 🤔)
Oh most definitely :)
There were indeed plans for terrain generation, which was going to be done with biome tile sets to generate a certain biome by randomly selecting a group of tiles from the set, and said tiles would be meshed together using an actual terrain system to create an explorable biome variant, there were 5 known tile sets, Safe Shallows, Kelp Forest, Mushroom Forest, Bulb Zone and Inactive Lava Zone.
That’s very cool! :)
8:55 best edit ever
Eyy thank you! :)
You’ve gotten all the betas and alphas, time for Subnautica in the future!
Haha working on it :D
1:26 I haven’t watched bacon in a while so seeing his face was a huge surprise for me
Oh I can imagine :D
I almost get a kind of creepy feeling from these old prototypes/builds. They're definitively cool to see though!
Also cute plushie!
I really get those creepy vibes too :)
The plushie looks so cool! It's crazy how much your channel has grown since I first subscribed, you are DEFINITELY the best Subnautica RUclipsr! Keep up the good work :)
Thank you so much for the kind words :)
@@TheLastBacon No problem!
Nice video! Never saw this demo so its cool to see it now
Yeah it's super interesting to look at :)
it's interesting that even if players were not meant to see the Aurora that there are still effects that you would only see if you're close like the debris under water at 7:13
True :)
I wish I had enough disposable income to drop on 100 plushies so that anyone who wanted one can have one with no worries. Or even to send to you to make sure you have at least 100 orderable plushies to sell :)) I'm so glad to have seen you come so far and keep making new and interesting videos about Subnautica related content even all these years after the game's full release and even BZ. Been subbed for a few years now (can't remember how long exactly... I think either during or before your mod showcase vids) and you've built such a unique and niche community for a timeless game that doesn't really get covered anymore and that's awesome. Keep doing you and if you decide to branch into other content I'll still be here :D
Thank you so much for the kind words :) People like you make all the effort worth it!!
even if on peacefull or godmode or whatever going to the void makes me shiver , even though there are just the light blue reapers , i still feel like something watches me far below the void , waiting for me to come closer.......
Terrifying ikr.....
Yep absolutely - never feels pleasant to go there :)
I loved the edit at the end. The part where you went back up above the water was so perfect that I almost couldn't tell it changed at all, only noticing because of the finished Aurora
Yay really glad you liked it :)
Great video as always! And that edit at 9:35 was so SMOOTH!!
Eyyy thank you :)
9:31 HOW WAS GHAT SO DAM SMOOTH
Hehe :)
@TheLastBacon
I hope this message finds you well. I appreciate your content and would like to ask a few questions, if you have the time to answer.
Firstly, I would like to inquire about the specifications of the computer you use, and its associated cost.
Secondly, have you had the opportunity to play Shadow of War?
Lastly, I am curious as to whether there have been any recent announcements regarding Subnautica Three.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Another great video! Those transitions at the end of the video during the little montage were really cool 😎
And the plushie is adorable!
Thank you kindly :)
Holy those transitions!! Very well done! Also, I love how you keep exploring those older builds keep it up! :]
Thank you! :) Really glad you like these!
I remember some early talk about Subnautica about multiplayer. I think it was also meant to be procedural to a degree. They also wanted to do a lot more with the diggable land. I know the diggable land was causing issues. IDK why the others were removed. if I had to guess it's simply because the vision for the game changed a lot.
Yeah procedural, multiplayer Subnautica sounds awesome :)
the minute where i saw the plushie i jump into the description and pay it, i wanted it so uch and it look so cute
continue your video i love it, your my subnautica favorite youtuber
Thank you so much that means a lot! :)
@@TheLastBaconoh bacon why must you be so wholesome
Damn, this is cool. We can finally see the famed 2d Aurora again. Also the classic Cyclops interior, with the different docking bay, and the lava lizard stalker model are really interesting to see. And yes, Subnautica was originally meant to be multiplayer and procedurally generated.
Yep this really takes me back :)
Bacon plushie!!
Yay thank you! :)
i really like the transitions during the edit, they are very smooth
Yay thank you :)
These animations 😭
Really cute Plushi!
Thank you kindly! :)
I’m so glad the plushies finally out!!! I’m getting my hands on it as soon as possible
Thank you so much! :)
Wow Bacon isn't a disembodied voice that wanders the ocean? :O
Haha I usually am :D
Ive been watching your content for years keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for sticking around :)
you are too underated you deserve atleast 800k subs
Thank you so much :)
Nice video and awesome transitions👍🏻
Thank you! :)
Those were some smooth transitions. great video!!!
Thank you! :)
The nostalgia of seeing these old versions from way back. It's hard to believe this is nearly a decade old. Thanks for sharing as always, Bacon!
This really hits different :)
A new video and a plush, you really do spoil us bacon, but I'm not complaining. Keep up the good work pal.
Trying my best :) Thank you kindly!!
1:40 if only I hadn't been a child I would have loved to get that plushie.
Fair :D
Dang the Aurora went through so many changes, from its design to the angle it sits at, its crazy. I do like the oxygen meter, It would've been neat to have it as an option in the full game
Yeah it's interesting to see how many elements of the game evolved over time :)
Man its so weird seeing the old aurora model because im just so used to the new one
It does look super strange :)
Love your vids! It's pretty crazy how subnautica used to look wonder how it would be if it stayed that way
Absolutely! :) Thank you!
Thanks I was always curious! Plushie ordered
Thank you so much! :)
Good job getting the plushie out,it looks AMAZING!🤩
Thank you so much!! :)
Yo nice vid bacon this these pre alphas always fascinated me also it’s Australia Day ! (Maybe not for you) but yea also nice plushys I will make sure to grab one
Thank you so much! :) It means a lot!
@@TheLastBacon np who wouldn’t want a bacon cat plushy?!
Damn! It’s crazy how you keep finding these early builds!
I love doing it :)
@@TheLastBacon fair enough. That’s good to hear you’re enjoying making this stuff!
I've started to watch you recently i started with your older videos and I'm glad you still post subnautica videos very good video and very good channel
Thank you very kindly! :)
@@TheLastBacon of course keep up the grind
The plush looks soo sick man great work :D
Thank you kindly! :)
Last comment on this vid i promise. Would you like exploring the depths of some of those alpha beta versions ? like the precursor bases before they were implemented, the early lost river and especially, the early lost river to lava zone tunnel. I once made a base at the edge of the black hole and it was suuuper spooky.
Absolutely :) Would be amazing!
I've never seen Bacon's face before. He's pretty.. *sizzling hot*
Puns and compliments aside, this is a cursed build of the game. It looks so weird.
Haha thank you kindly :) And yeah totally!
COME ON GUYS IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THE BACON PLUSH! I am definitely going to buy one once I get paid 😌 Keep up the amazing videos Bacon, so glad someone else enjoys this game as much as I do haha
Thank you so much really appreciate it!! :)
@@TheLastBacon :) love your videos man
2:38, a stalker mixed with a boneshark? Was that supposed to be what the Trident was?
It's the lava lizard model :) They were supposed to be used for stalkers.
At 0:36 it looks like that could've been a scrapped version of the seaglide
True!! :)
I thought you already did this you’ve done this so many times I can’t keep track of all of the times you want back to old subnutica
Yeah this is further back then ever before (outside the prototypes) :)
@@TheLastBacon now I know where we are
I've been waiting for this video
Yeasss :)
I didn't know how much Subnautica changed over the years until now
Yeah it's crazy to look back on it :)
Hey Bacon! I love your content, I've been watching since 2021! - GamingAnimators
Yay thank you so much for sticking around for so long!! :)
@@TheLastBaconNo problem! ^^
2:27 I honestly kind of wish someone made an objective mod for Subnautica, the base game shouldn't have it, but for anybody who is always stuck at a high level and can't get any further because they are too scared or they just don't know what to do. They can look at objectives to see what to do by downloading the mod.
I honestly kind of miss this.
Yeah fair :) Maybe it could be an accessibility feature.
You probably don’t remember me, but I’ve been here since about 4k subs. It’s cool to see how much you’ve grown. Good job 👍
Dang thank you SO much for still being around! It means a lot :)
I love your videos still, I’ve been watching forever now.
Thank you so much! That means a lot :)
@@TheLastBacon no problem! I really hope to see more older versions of subnautica since I really love the videos.
altera:we need this man to uncover mistery of 4546b
bacon:yes sir
Y E S :D
i had really bad day and just your video made my day
Yay really glad I can help a bit :)
@@TheLastBacon your every video always helps me
Call of The Void has brought me back, and God, it's been too damn long since we got a leviathan mod so I can kill again
Absolutely! :)
I have fear of deep waters and also fear of "out of boundaries" in video games. Your videos are pure horror for me
Oh I feel that so hard :D
I love the plushie! It looks great! I really hope that at least 100 people buy it so that it can go into production.
Yay I hope so too :) Thank you!
from what i know, showing off the build at PAX in 2014 is what catapulted the game from a proof of concept into a fully fledged adventure. I don't recall where the developers have said this but the few public demos they had were instrumental in the game's early success, and it's likely this build is to thank for the game being developed fully at all.
Oh yeah I would certainly imagine so :) Even back then the game was so unique.
Wanna hear a fun fact about biters? They usually prefer to scavenge than to hunt when they can they don’t care if the fish is alive dead or cooked and they really love cooked fishes and they will swim towards dead peepers to eat them unlike the sand shark that is not very interested in eating dead fish oh and you can directly feed predators at the medium or smaller scale by swimming up to their face while holding a live fish they will eat the fish instead of biting you but it doesn’t work on leviathan class creatures
A fun fact indeed :)
83th day of asking the last bacon to make a series of him playing outer wilds.
The clock is ticking
Ooh the number is getting quite high :)
Damn, I ACTUALLY remember the update that made the Aurora into a real 3D model, that's wild! I totally forgot it was just a billboard for a while!
Good times :)
And by the way, why do i find a cat made out of bacon so cute. Your edits are great dude :p
Edit: Aww the plushie is adorphnable. I'd buy one if i could, keep up the good work !
Thank you very much! :)
you going to the aurora is probably the most uncomfortable thing ive seen in subnautica. its just so empty and so cursed.
Yeah felt so weird being there :)
the game was so different back then. first time I saw the old Aurora model I was very surprised. I actually prefer that design, I think it looks cooler and more futuristic. I wish was old enough to see when classics like this were being developed. I have a question: where in the world did you get this demo from? (loved the video, looking forward to more this year!)
It was definitely an interesting look :)
I remember playing subnaticua for the first time when I was 12. This game was amazing hope they keep making more games like this
I hope so too :)
Yes, this is our old PAX build! We didn’t any have much to show but wanted players to know about the game. Heck, we didn’t even really know what the game was going to be.
The 6 minute timer was to keep players and the line moving. Hugh Jeremy came from the Natural Selection community and made better videos than we ever could, and so he joined the company and took on all PR and community roles. He’s the one that designed and ran that beautiful PAX booth.
Good memories indeed.
Must feel incredible to look back at it, knowing what the franchise would become :)
7:20 i remember this, sweet good old 2d Aurora.
Good times :)
didnt watched you in a while so i can get pretty many videos cause your videos ends fast :)
Ngl nice video! :D
Funny goofy run in the water 0:53
Yay thank u! :)
Subnautica is one of the games of all time
It truly is :D
It's kinda sad seeing these early builds and recognising most of these things. Makes me feel infinitely old
Same!!! :(
ngl that aurora design is kinda cracked
Absolutely :)
Look at the seamoth and cyclops or seaglide! its so similar to the subnautica we have now! also nice edit's at 8:57 !!
Yep absolutely! :)
Bro love your vids, also how did you get this?
You can use the beta code "pax2014version" on Steam :)
Thanks!@@TheLastBacon
Yooo big fan here, love the vids m8. I have a question, do you prefer subnautica or subnautica 2
Thank you kindly :) Tbh I prefer the original for now if by “2” u mean BZ.
@@TheLastBacon oh yeah should have clarified I meant BZ and I would say the original is the best too.
Im so happy that even in 2024 theres a good subnautica RUclipsr. Love your Videos ❤
As a 🇩🇪german 🇩🇪 i don't watch your Videos.
Im learning english
Yay thank you very kindly :)
I always watch these development phase gameplay videos expecting a new creepy leviathan and a biome that were scrapped 😂😂😂. Also first time seeing your face dude looking good
Haha thank you! :)
Really having high hopes for a multiplayer mode in the third subnautica game.
Same :D
Those transitions were just too good
Thank you! :)
Now I want my hands on this build.
use this code for the steam beta: pax2014version
Yay :)
I recommend playing the planet crafter since i have 200 hours on subnautica i really liked it and i suggest trying it since its kinda a land version of Subnautica and just good
I’ll check it out! :)
9:05 Good transition ngl
Thank u :)
FINALLY!!! Finally a reveal on how the back of bro’s head looks like. 0:12
I’ve been wondering if he already did face reveal… 1:36
What a reveal :D
2:11 Those peepers were busy celebrating the release of subnautica.
Pretty much :)
You're the best man!
Thank you kindly :)
Yay the 30th version of the same exact video 🔥🔥🔥
Lol where are the other 29? :)
@@TheLastBacon😂😂
Honestly I love the last bacon I love subnatica I play it every day and the last bacon if you are hearing this I love your content sadly my mom won’t let me buy the new merch :( so love ya bacon 🐟🐟
No worries :) Thank you so much!
Oh yes, pre-Alpha Subnautica, where the aurora was just a PNG in the skybox
Good times :)
Those transitions at the end where clean🥓
Eyy thank you :)
Not gonna lie, I kinda like the 2d aurora a bit more than the final, the 2d model is so much bigger and much more menacing, and really gives the feeling that you survived a massive disaster.
I’m not sure it’s bigger - but I feel like it looks a bit more futuristic :)
this is an epic bacon moment
Heck yes :)
I like how the old ui looked in the beta version
It was cool :)
This wasn't actually the very first build. The first one was just piloting around a highly simplified Cyclops, and you might've been able to leave it.
Yeah that was probably one of the prototypes I played a while ago :)
@@TheLastBacon I believe I'm thinking of a one before it. I looked at that video and I remember seeing a version with a more simplified Cyclops then the one in prototype 1, you could only move forward, backward, left and right. If you went outside the ship was a box with a window. Although it could just be the Mandela Effect.
