One thing Ive noticed his how similar the pre alpha build is to the final game, graphically speaking. A lot of what it lacks is just the lighting. They already had the main ideas for designs like the Seamoth and Cyclops way early in development, too. Amazing to see these builds come to life!
A little scary as well to think about how this absolute gem of a game might not be as popular of they hadn't changed some things. Also awesome to appreciate how far they have come.
I’ve heard so much about the 2D aurora so I’m glad to finally see it, I don’t think this series can continue from here but it’s been really cool to see this stuff archived
Yes, this is our old PAX build! We didn’t any have much to show but wanted players to know about the game. Heck, we didn’t even really know what the game was going to be. The 6 minute timer was to keep players and the line moving. Hugh Jeremy came from the Natural Selection community and made better videos than we ever could, and so he joined the company and took on all PR and community roles. He’s the one that designed and ran that beautiful PAX booth. Good memories indeed.
Were the treasure chests seen here used as a promotional thing during the demo? I'm imagining somebody telling players that if they find a chest in the demo then they get a free gift from the booth or something
It's very interesting that the Aurora is a 2D image that almost looks just like the finished one. They had a really good idea what they wanted to do early on, and stuck with it
I have a theory about the light rays in the void. It may be the place where effects are generated before being teleported to their proper positions. Some games like Halo 2 use a system like this, where, instead of having to make new effects every place they are needed, they just have them in one place and teleport them to the places they need to be. It’s really interesting that subnautica mightve been like this at some point
A lot of games do this. It's to counter the need to load in new assets with how slow hard drives and disks are at fetching data. Some games like the Wind Waker also just shrink things down to barely visible till you approach it like the chu chus. These kinds of techniques may become less prevalent with the commonality of SSDs and just having more RAM.
There were indeed plans for terrain generation, which was going to be done with biome tile sets to generate a certain biome by randomly selecting a group of tiles from the set, and said tiles would be meshed together using an actual terrain system to create an explorable biome variant, there were 5 known tile sets, Safe Shallows, Kelp Forest, Mushroom Forest, Bulb Zone and Inactive Lava Zone.
Dang the Aurora went through so many changes, from its design to the angle it sits at, its crazy. I do like the oxygen meter, It would've been neat to have it as an option in the full game
