Want to clarify my ignorant comment at 4:22 - mushrooms have a lot of carbon in them :)
Indeed carbone is one if not the most important atoms needed for life (well , all atoms are needed but carbon is very present)
What's most interesting to me about making carbon from mushrooms is this confirms the life on 4546B is carbon based just like Earth life. Lots of hints in the final game that the planet's pretty Earth like in a lot of ways, but I don't remember anything that clearly confirms the carbon aspect? You're just kind of left to assume that's the case since the Kharaa infection presents with the same symptoms in Ryley as it does with everything else.
life
Did you use the Stanley parable ambience? All I can picture is the Stanley parable office.
@@pikator9153 Actually there are theories that it could work with silicium as well
The sighting of that player model at the floating islands gave me an idea of a subnautica mod that makes the game look like early access and throughout the playthrough the mod gives you subtle hints of not being alone and being stalked by someone
please dont
Haha don’t give the modders any ideas :D
Ooh maybe it can copy the player for the first few minutes to give the impression it’s just a test until suddenly it swims out of view and you don’t see it again
@@TheLastBacon I have a new project
@@TheLastBacon not gon stop me😀😀😀 ( i cant code, model, or mod)
I love how the community is trying to convince itself that subnautica isn't a horror game, while the earliest build of subnautica looks like a backrooms level
Haha we’ve long known it’s a proper horror game :)
@@TheLastBaconno it’s not lmao

@@midnightplayzyt9239 lmao Brooo, so real though. I don't either, but I needa start having little bits of fun like this, creation is a great joy of being human but it's not embraced enough :)
Fun fact: There was another player model down in the lava zone when that eventually get's added. Apparently Markiplier also found him in one of his Subnautica videos.
I should definitely look for that one :)
I remember that! When I found it, there was a lighting bug, which made everything except the lava pitch black dark. As if that wasn't scary enough, I was in my prawn suit, just walking on and around the floor of the lava zone, listening to the screams of the sea dragon leviathan in the distance. When I reached the spot where it spawns in, it took a while for the game to render it in, so literally popped in out of nowhere. Absolutely terrifying.
I REMEMBER WATCHING THAT E[ISODE OF MARKIPLIER'S, THAT WAS SO FUCKING FREAKY.
Just checked it out, it was a July 2016 build, though, there might be an earlier version
I remember that. TLB is right, they would use them as a way to measure scale by placing the character model down. Fun fact: the character model and the player model have one very big difference.....the player model has no head, because that's where the camera is, and if you had a head, the camera would clip right through it, which looks bad (I've seen games do that).
seeing a player model in an empty game is just something else
it tells you that you arent alone
Made me sooo uncomfortable :)
@@TheLastBacon was that inspiration for the creepy pasta
we really need more underwater games. They are so unexplored and underappreciated it's insane
Absolutely :)
And we can give even more people thalassophobia :)
imagine a horror game about prehistoric seas lol
I recommend SOMA if youre looking for an underwater game, vastly different from subnautica (heavy horror) but great storytelling and some awesome underwater segments
yeah something along the lines of Subnautica while also having a cast of crazy aquatic abominations like that of Barotrauma.
I actually made myself a little adventure in Subnautica Below Zero with the same "limital space" idea. I was able to build up on top of the mountain I was not supposed to and started exploring. It was crazy, I found so many things, here is the list of some stuff I found:
- huge flat areas of snow (sometimes changing to sand, or was it just light brown snow? Idk)
- snow that glows in dark
- mounains shaped like cubes or spheres
- fake mountains (the ones you just go through. I was even carrying snow to throw in front of me to avoid falling and getting stuck)
- a vanishing mountain
- alternative entrance to Frozen Leviathan cave
- Dev testing room for Ice Worm (unfortunetly it got removed, now you can only see circles of sand in that place)
- 2 really small pieces of land floating in the air
- Obelisk looking mountain in the middle of nothing
- water and snow glitching into each other
- being able to look at the surface of the Void are without getting eaten (I still saw the Leviathans down there tho, they tried to get to me but couldn't)
It was a great and surreal experience, exploring places not meant to be explored and finding stuff just for the sake of it :D
Sounds like a great time! I should go back to explore some liminal areas in BZ too! :)
the tundravoid is so much more scarier than anything else in the game because its just miles upon miles upon MILES of snow, and a tiny jump may lead to the ocean, with zero void chelis to attack you, so you fall, forever.
Omg I remember finding this too! And some of that stuff sounds familiar.
You know, this old build is suddenly much more realistic than I thought it would be (well, before you clipped into backrooms)). Because the ocean floor is also usually dark, barren, and somewhat liminal. Some might even say that this is the quintessence of thalassophobia: darkness, emptiness and impenetrable thickness of water, wherever you look.
Yeah this was just terrifying :)
exactly, atleast for me, who would say has at least some thalassophobia, seeing those completely empty areas (especially the dark ones) was 10 times worse than those areas later in the released game even if i knew that nothing was there to attack.
what strikes me with fear especially are areas where you dont have any orientation points, so either on the bottom of the sea with black "walls" everywhere around you and the ground looking basically the same or areas of the open sea where you just deep enough to still get some sunlight, but so far away from everything to completely loose orientation (think the scene of finding nemo right before they "meet" the whale)
"... you were in that lifepod"
the nostalgia hit me harder than an australian truck
Hits hard for sure :)
The V-Posing/T-Posing player model on that island is good material for a potential "Herobrine seen in early access Subnautica" creepypasta. And then the backcaves you dug into as well, great stuff man!
Exactly :)
Herobrine has left such a mark on creepypasta that he has transcended Minecraft and is in other games now.
@@Glitchbrine810 I mean, it shouldn't be. That's lazy writing if he appears in anything else
@@brokesmoke101 I don’t mean him exactly, more like similar things that don’t share the same appearance but similar creepy factors. Like messing with the world or disappearing when looked at. And I don’t mean games should add this btw, just a fun thought
In those old versions you can go under the world. Go more than 10,000 m down in the void and you will be able to go under the land mass. terraformer works too. The sounds you were hearing were precursor sounds for the ghost leviathans.
Sounds like a fun trip :)
I understand that once the VR horror hits you, it's very difficult to come back to. It's very intense, I know because I have tried it. But if by any chance you find the courage, try return of the ancients in VR once again. It was so scary and I would love to see it again.
I definitely want to once (if) the mod gets finished and released :)
The A-Posing characters are remnants from when you were supposed to encounter other people in the story.
Although more than one of them were also to double as size references, such as in the original Sea Emperor Prison area.
Would certainly be interesting to see other characters :)
(Man plays old build of game
Finds creepy player esc model
Then finds the backrooms)
Man this is really feels like a creepypasta and i love it Lmao
Exactly!! Like I couldn't write it any better if I tried :D
6:50 idk something about knowing your alone then seeing a person which in a survival context would be good is scary af in this game
Totally agree - proper nightmare fuel :)
I always found the earlier versions of subnautica to be more cosy than terrifying, something about the bright blue ocean contrasting against the white sand especially in those unfinished areas made it almost dream like, that and no reapers...
This definitely didn’t feel cosy to me :)
Also the lack of reapers.
When watching everyone play early access, I half expected to see another person swimming around. It was so creepy. For example: the hell pit at the front of the aurora was terrifying.
Yeah seeing that size-ref on the island didn't help :D
This is one of those things that you never think about, this game was scary in older versions for _all the wrong reasons_
Exactly :)
Okay that start scared me with the sound hahaha. This is gonna be quite an interestong watch! And seeing old builds of Subnautica is always a treat!
Yay really hope you enjoy! :)
@@TheLastBaconi have a question, Why do you always add a “:)” to the end of your comments?

I seem to remember a weird cave that jacksepticeye found during his playthroughs of early access. It was a massive cave with weird orb like textures on the walls of it, I remember it being near the mushroom forest place near the front of the aurora. Would be nice to see someone find and explore it
Ooh I’ll look for it :)
Maybe the player model was a stand in perhaps the devs where originally going to have other survivors as you do get a pda that gives you the location of the floating island
Maybe! :)
I was always fascinated by Early Accsess Subnautica and when i discovered your videos i was so exited. Your videos are great and please keep on exploring Early versions of Subnautica!
Thank you kindly :) Will do!
I love that you are still going on with this game and bringing back old players to it!! Good job keep it up man!!!
Thank you! Still loving the game as much as when I started :)
The current generator seems interesting. Imagine if we could use it for defense. Like push enemies back or make whirlpools.
Ooh that’s a really good idea :) I was also thinking maybe material transport of some sort.
@@TheLastBaconit was fated to be removed, as it was made purely for testing the idea of adding underwater currents
@@virmirfan Then why add recipe and everything in fabricator, and icon? Plenty of items were not available in fabricator and had to be spawned, but this one had it's own recipe...
@@n646n I don't know why, but I do know that it was meant to be a tool for testing, my guess for its recipe is for play testing for the public
The December 15th 2015 build was the 1st build I ever played and it's crazy seeing how much progress they made in just a year.
Dang you were there early :)
@@TheLastBacon yea I saw Markiplier's first video of it and immediately fell in love and knew I needed the game right then
In the current version, if you go behind the aurora, you can find another island, which i like to call 'danger island' since its infested with reapers. :)
True! :)
Fun fact! The language issue is because of how games treat text. Each and every piece of text in the game is given an identifier. Then, you can write that text in each language which references that identifier. What you see when switching languages is the ID of the identifier as they hadn't translated it yet!
That makes sense :)
To explore these old builds is an interesting idea.
Even though I knew how the game looked and all back then I still learned new stuff.
Knowing how Unity works I ask myself a lot of questions after watching this.
Good job.
I would love to see more.
Thank you :) I’ll definitely make more!
remembering bact to the old builds of subnautica fills me with nostalgia as i used to binge watch riot and a few others play the games through out the development .things like the super seaglide, the hellhole and the early parts of the see emperors area being just a super deep pit . there was a command to teleport you there it was something along the lines of "to prision" or something of the sorts. and when the rock punchers used to be in the main subnautica.
i know waay to much about removed features of this game.
It really takes me back too :) I remember watching videos about every new creature that was added!
Dude, I seriously love your content, the editing and pacing is great, keep up the hard work!
Thank you so much :)
6:49 I remember those! People even theorised that... *realisation of when it was* ...those would be other survivors!
That would be quite interesting :)
It very interesting to see back in time and it goes to show just how much work goes into these games!
I was really gutted to find they removed the terraformer from the final release.
Yeah they could’ve kept it in creative maybe :)
There's a sunset game that was called Feral, it was a MMO. This vid brings back memories of my friends and I glitching out of the map and then giving 'guided tours' of the surreal terrain and little out of bounds pockets to play in. Eventually people shared these tricks with their friends, and the OOB areas became popular spots to hang out. Game devs eventually got around to patching this though. (any OGs remember the Oasis OOB in Shattered Bay??)
Sounds like a great time :)
6:50 scared the hell outta me ! It’s brought back a nightmare I had of something just like this happing in subnautica ! its so creepy !
Oof that sweet PTSD :D

Hey The Last Bacon. Thank you for posting. I haven’t watched a while and decided to recently after being depressed. I tried to unalive myself recently and when I can’t focus I like to have these in the background especially the lore videos. Thanks again.

Yay thank you :) I do think I’ve improved!
I remember some versions where the void was straight up bottomless with no ghost leviathans, and you could swim down potentially millions of meters and basically leave the games box.
Yep true :)
@@TheLastBacon fun thing actually. Just doing a quick google search, you would need an ocean with a depth of 291 km for ice 7 to start forming.
So if the void canonically has the greatest depth possible, you should be able to descend 291000 meters before reaching a surface made of ice that buries the planets asthenosphere.
Assuming you can make a seamoth capable of withstanding a psi of 413,914

Even though both you and i know there is nothing in those "backroom" areas. We're scared/uncomfortable due to "the fear of the unknown" we dont know whats there. If you were suddenly in a complete void and were told by someone that there is NOTHING there except you, you'll still be in fear.... The psyche of us people is really interesting when you think about it.
Yeah exactly :) Like reasonably I know it’s all empty but sometimes that doesn’t help…
man that clip at the start reminded me of when i watched your creepypasta, chilling.
Reminded me of when I wrote it too haha :)

I kinda wish the new subnautica will have at least one biome with this early access creepiness to it!
Just the normal moss in such a alien world was so terrifying.

Thank you so much! That has always been my goal with the channel :)
That player model on the island immediately gave ”You Are Not Alone” creepypasta vibes
Absolutely :D
I just got the game this month, been watching your videos as I play. I launched my rocket and sent out my first time capsule right after this video released.
Yay that’s awesome congrats :)
I've been watching every single video you post for years... What a perfect nostalgia video to match my nostalgia 😆
Thank you so much :) That means a lot!
As someone who loves liminality, this is awesome. Plus, it's really interesting to explore old builds and search for unseen scrapped monsters and leviathans or beasts through dark cut areas of the game.
Even knowing they don't exist, it's fun, mysterious. That's why I love the world border with the surface horns in the old version of the games. The layout is just SO fucking creepy, the sounds are disturbing, and it really makes you think that there is something else out there.
I totally agree :) It’s both creepy and fascinating to me!
This reminds me of a comment I made on one of your videos, about how liminal the early access versions felt without most of the biomes fleshed out and no leviathan threats, you knew there was no immediate danger but it still felt so uneasy almost as if you were being watched
Yeah you were exactly right :)
great video! I can’t believe you reply to all of your comments even when there is 500 or more. Keep up the great work 👍
Thank you kindly! :)
I like how while trying to explore early subnautica, Bacon is instead met with the "You were never alone" and "The thing in the void" creepypastas from the past on his channel
Haha really wasn't expecting that when I hopped in! :)
that one moment with the guy watching you from afar feels like that one moment in the forest where the same happens
True! Such a spooky moment in the Forest as well! :)
I would love to see more of early access Subautica cause this one was very fun to watch.
Yay glad you thought so :)
Thank you! This is the reason I hate such vast open empty spaces in games. Even if there's nothing there, it's such a creepy feeling just seeing an empty map where you know there should be life (and will be in the future)
I can relate so much :)
The fact that the player model was in the exact same spot it was in you were never alone freaked me out.
Ikr!! So creepy :O

I love how I was scared despite not being the one playing, loving horror movies and hugging my Fredbear.(I normally sleep with a plushie to stop myself from sleeping on my hands)
I have a plushie too! :)
one cool thing you can do in creative to clip through the map and get to the lower areas of the game is falling to 8000 meters in the void using the prawn suit, and then when you teleport up you will fall through the map and get to lower sections of the game. The reason this most likely works is because the prawn suit is one of the only things in subnautica that has gravity physics, and it was also programmed to have a very high terminal velocity, and that speed is faster than the game’s terrain loading abilities. Now there is only one main way to reach this terminal velocity without commands or cheats, the void. Since the void is so deep, you are able to reach the prawn suit’s terminal velocity, and when you reach the bottom of the void you teleport instantly to the surface, but your prawn suit’s terminal velocity stays the same, and since you teleported and are falling so fast the game can’t load the terrain in time and you noclip through the map.
Huh that is pretty cool :)
@@TheLastBacon discovered it on complete accident lol
Nice video, cool idea. But the most scary thing for me, a new person to this channel, was the damned BACON CAT making EXPRESSIONS. Scary stuff.
Haha sorry about that :D
I love the liminal ["cartoon"]water theme and this was a masterpiece for me with my Subnautica nightmares
this is literally like every dream I have about this game. If you want, I could describe some, because they can be quite interesting.
Always curious about people's thalassophobia nightmares :)
@@TheLastBacon
1. Okay... It all started with the fact that I found myself in some kind of “village” somewhere to the right of the Aurora, far away. Then I approached the Aurora engines and was attacked by the mutated reaper Leviothan. It was much shorter and faster, but still dangerous. Then I vaguely remember what happened next, but I found myself at a semblance of an aurora (with clearly expressed brutalism, it seems) that had sunk under water. there were places with air, but it was as rusty as if it was trillions of years old. Well, I needed to go down somewhere and I LITERALLY had to get my feet wet and the unpleasant part immediately began. I suddenly found myself somewhere near something like an artificially lost river (or whatever it’s called) and there was something like a village sunken under water.
@@TheLastBacon 2. I don’t know whether you know the game Garrys mod or not, but there are maps there called “Infmap” and they are all SO LIMINAL AND ARTIFICIAL. Now to the dream itself. The entire world of subnautics was without water and seemed to be this map (and it was, it was a dream about how I tested such a map). Then something surreal began. This whole place seemed to be a safe shallow. the very first location of subnautics. But it seemed to be surrounded by icy mountains and it was visible how some semblance of Aurora connected to the Cyclops crashed there. I remember how I was still in fast flight through the walls, flying through caves that were as frightening as possible with their emptiness. But the worst thing is that there were no shadows and everything was as if there were light sources everywhere.
I would LOVE to see more of this series!
Yay will do :)
Seeing how much of this version of the game was followed through by the developers in the final product really reveals how much thought and planning went into this game from the very get go. That's something a lot of early access games from this generation of gamonh do not show
Yeah absolutely :) It’s so cool to see!
I've played the game a little over a week ago so early 2024 and it's so crazy how far it has come, it's so insanely stunning now I legitimately forgot I was playing a game some times because I was so immersed (lol). But it's also really interesting to see how the playable version started out and what would eventually change to what we know now. Subnautica is definitely in the same category of games like Outer Wilds that are just an amazing experience you can't recreate.
Absolutely! It’s awesome seeing the whole journey :)

The current generators are interesting, because the early game also had terraforming. So it seems like it was initially meant to be much much much more free form. With the terraformer and current generators you could essentially create transport tubes.
Yeah I wonder what crazy builds people could create using them :)
