I think the scariest part of Crabsquids is the sound design. It doesn't even remotely sound like an animal, they sound like something scratching metal or glass slowly cracking under the water pressure. This especially works well in the Degasi Seabase where it feels like the construction is falling apart or as if the Crabsquid is trying to trick you into thinking it's the seabase making these noises and not it

When I went to the degasi base I didn‘t realize there was a crabsquid. It did make sounds, which were unsettling, but I wasn‘t sure where they were from. Then it destroyed my seamoth and I probably died shortly after. That‘s when the real scare happened

The first time I visited the Degasi Seabase in the Deep Grand Reef, I forgot to turn my seamoth lights off, while exploring the base the crabsquids destroyed my seamoth, leaving me more than 400 meters under water. Since that day I don't let those thing get near me. People can say those things are not scary, for my game experience, they are.

    • @AceFaz

I don't think they realise that we Aren't scared of dying in this game, all he pointed out about them was that they aren't strong or difficult to avoid, but that's Not the point.
People are scared of non-deadly spiders in real life, and they usually aren't dangerous, aggressive, fast, or hard to avoid either. There arw people scared of average money spiders, and they're tiny.
Crabsquids are Huge, even if they don't look it in-game, they are Several times Larger than humans, they look creepy, and their Databank entry says that they are intelligent, and use their limbs to Expertly Butcher their prey, before eating them, filling the large organ in their head, which is actually a large stomach, that they need to fill at a scarily frequent basis.
Their large spider-like limbs, allowing them to walk around or swim, their intelligence, and what they Would do if they really caught you irl, is what Makes them scarier than most leviathans, who would just eat you in one bite and move on, or realistically ignore you.
Sure, they're easy to avoid (Because Everything in this game is, if you know how), by turning off lights, but that usually means you need to move around in the Darkness, and even That doesn't gaurantee your safety. Plus they have their EMP to shut off your vehicle and force you into a helpless position, makes encounters with them scary, leaving you stuck in the dark.
There's also their strange eyes, and other features to make them look creepier. And as you mentioned, their sound effects.

Sea Emperor. The momma in the base game is telepathically communicating with you, and may have done this to the Degasi survivors as well. Below Zero also had cut early content back in it's early access builds, where the babies we released are communicating with Robin, which means that this is a thing ALL of the Emperors do, and the momma was not a special case.

I think with the copper the meme is that you never have enough of it and it’s annoying to farm. At least that was my experience. Copper gets used so much, but is only, and I mean only, found in limestone outcrops. other metals like titanium are also found in abundance through things like metal scrap and other metals get used so rarely a few mining trips will do the trick, but copper is in this middle ground where it‘s consistently used throughout the entire game, but also only available in outcrops. Yes there‘s the giant ore‘s for the drill arm, but I mean that‘s only really late game where you start to have enough of it. And also, limestone outcrops give only titanium and copper. Sure that means that you have a 50/50 chance for copper, but also for titanium, and when you constantly get that instead it‘s really demoralizing. At least with other metals you have outcrops where each drop is valuable, but getting titanium a bunch just sucks imo

I cannot agree that thermal energy is useless. At some point, I even replaced a nuclear reactor with thermal energy. This was due to the fact that in a nuclear reactor the fuel rods have to be replaced and the another does not have this problem. Also, the feeling of creating my own energy transfer system was great and helped me get more into the atmosphere of the biome I live in.

    • @OMEGA_3541

Reactor rods have 5000 energy each, totaling 20000 for a full reactor, replacing a full reactor is only gonna happen if you're extremely energy intensive, and only once or twice per playthrough. Plus, a base thats chewing through reactor rods like that is not going to be sustained by thermal plants. But back in the days of early access that thing was an icbm, it could swim at the same speed of the seaglider, it was very nimble so it could do abrupt turns to chase you (literally a 180 degree turn instantly) and it could follow you to other planets, back in those days all creatures didnt have movement restrictions and crashfish was programmed to explode only near the player.
Nowadays the average damage it does is about 40 with a maximum of 60 and a minimum of 10 (depens on distance, the maximum roll is usually rare) but back in the day the average damage was 70 with a minimum of 40 and if you were unlucky it could instakill you.
It is one of those flashbacks from an era where reapers follow you to your base
also the 50/50 chance of the limestone is not true, limestone has a 30% chance of dropping copper and it has a guaranteed copper every 3 rocks you destroy
And i dont know how can people say thermals are a bad power source, it is literally the most op power source in the game since it does not need any type of fuel and has the second fastest charging rate (its not like it is easy to notice the difference anyway) so its a power source you just build and forget about dealing with it, lavazone and thermal vents are not optimal places for the generators, you need to put them in active volcanos (i forgot their name) thats where they shine

I kinda only took this as opinions and recognize the dude is wrong on a lot of things.
Thermals are one of those things he's just wrong about. Reliable set-and-forget power. So you have to build more to keep up with a nuclear reactor? So what? It's not like you have to fuel them once they're running.
If you put a foundation on top of one of the smoker vents, you can put a bunch of them on it. Six or eight, I forget the exact arrangement you can do.

  • @Aelinbunn
    @Aelinbunn 5 месяцев назад +85

A lot of these unpopular opinions just come down to knowledge, experience, and personal phobia.
Crash fish aren't scary to anyone who knows anything about them, but for beginners who aren't expecting them, they don't know how fast they are, how much damage they'll do if they catch you, and even when they'll pop out.
They just hear this scary sound and go fight-or-flight until they learn or wiki stuff.
Thermal energy is insanely good when you're finishing the game. The inactive lava zone is where it really does its best work. Bringing a thermal module for your prawn suit will let you refill it on the fly, and dropping a simple base down there will make sure a prepared player never has to make the long journey back to their main base for resupplying, for recharging, and for upgrading the cyclops.
Once you set off on your trip to the lost river, thermal generators can ensure you will never have to backtrack from there.
I've also seen it save the butts of a ton of people who go down, leave their cyclops because they don't know about the lava leeches, and then get stranded without power.
Crabsquids are kinda the same with the crashfish argument, but add the creepy factor of their eyes and how fking massive they are when you get close to scan them.
Their design is just creepy for some people, and when they camp the exit/window to the degasi habitat and you see them just filling up the entire view it gets a bit unnerving.

limestone: basically the same, but you're guaranteed to get the mineral you got the least of from the previous outcrops. for example:
    1st -- silver
    2nd -- gold

8:07 We see here a fundamental misunderstanding of how base generators work.
A base ranks the generators in a specific order. That order used to be build order, but that was changed in updates and I never figured out the new pattern.
In any case, the base draws power from the first generator on the list, until it is out of power. Only then does it tap the second. Let's say those four generators are all 70 degrees, 59.4 per minute. You have three full generators in that clip, so you're only drawing 59.4 per minute. When power drops below 750, then you'll get the second generator kicking in at 118.8 per minute total. You don't get the full force of the 237.6 per minute until you drop below 250.
In other words, as you draw down more generators, your power will stabilize at 250, 500, 750, or 1000 depending on if the draw can be met by 4, 3, 2, or just 1 generator. It's not all-or-nothing the way a single nuclear generator is.

You can source much of your copper and silver from the barnacles on reefbacks. They usually come in herds so you can have a decent bit if you farm enough. Crashfish can also be dispatched easily with the heat blade so they aren't a threat. Same goes for much of the bigger fauna like crab squids, and bone sharks.

honest opinion i actually prefer below zero over subnautica one i did a playthrough streaming my first blind playthrough of both games recently and i found myself enjoying streaming below zero a lot more than subnautica
although the story is a bit hit and miss at times having al-an and maregreite actually feels better because it doesnt take away from the isolated feeling yet still makes you feel like the world is more realistic with the company of the two
tbh the below zero biomes far surpass the original subnautica. the biomes are incredible looking and the way they match the resources to each biome is great and really helps improve the authenticity of each biome
one bone i have to pick with below zero tho is the lack of larger creatures often times the main three creatures you interact with are squidsharks, cyroptersuaras and the iceworm with the ocasional chelicerate (which btw the patrol on them is kinda stupid i had one swim into the safe shallows from over 500m away and kill me in my base)
the plant life in the game is amazing tho its so diverse and the plant life really adds to the emergion, the levaithans are a bit hit and miss tho as the ventgarden is kinda meh in my opinion they are cool for what they are but kinda useless, the chelicerates are more so annoying than they are scary and doesnt really have a lasting effect on the player, the shadow levaithan on the other hand that mf can be burned to hell when i was exploring the caverns looking for kyanite i got my first encounter with one of them as i slowly saw a dark large snake like figure swimming along the edge of the cavern almost like it was stalking me
i think thats what works best for the shadow leviathan though compared to chelicerates you only encounter them a small amount of times before the end of the game and having them in the tight dark caverns deep underground whilst trying to remember the path back up, compared to chelicerates who you encounter in just open easy to avoid spaces and just mainly serve as a way to keep you away from the map edge rather than having a good purpose and becomes more of an annoyance than a threat, same with the cryoesauras they are almost every where and they are more so just annoying than scary once you get the perimeter defence and their roar is just annoying to hear every 3 seconds
squidsharks are different tho i actaually really enjoy their design they look innocent till you approach them and then you realise they are actaually kinda deadly, many peoples first introduction to the squidshark is through the deep twisty bridges which is a great introduction to them because before you first go down there all you can see and hear is roars coming from the deep dark pit of darkness with no way to see what lurks down there giving the player a sense of terror of the unknown.
as for the story i actually really like sams story and robins relationship with her sister especially the mementos you find scattered around the bases, they did a great job of making the alterra crew feel like real individuals who could really exist and i think thats great!
also the diversity with below zero in terms of character design is great you got all sorts of characters of shapes, size, gender, species, sexuality, race and background you have emmanuel for gay represntation, you have sam questioning her potential to be lesbian, you have margreit who comes from an indeginious background, you have an entire other species with al-an, you have fred being very intelligent but a very self imposed character and then you have the contrast with emmanuel a very strong hard headed leadership character and (i forget his name) the sunglasses guy who comes off as a mean brute type character but is actually really sweet and just misses his kids back home
the base customisation is great as well with the little trinkets, collectibles and working bathroom tools such as a toilet and shower and sink is great plus the abiltiy to see everything with the control room and change the color pallet of the base is a nice addition that can really help your base feel homey, the seatruck depo is also a nice addition allowing you to store your modules and sea tuck saves you building a second moonpool and talking of which the seatruck modules are amazing as well being able to pick and choose which modules you need for which adventure is great, the snowfox though i feel is kinda useless the upgrades actaully dont affect the probability of being attacked and the jump upgrade is kinda useless and i honestly dont think the snowfox is worth the trouble crafting for the extra risk it brings
thats my conclusion of subnautica below zero thx for reading this if you read all this im sorry how bad my spelling was hope you enjoyed reading it tho

In my experience, the reason I always find myself running out of Copper is that unlike its limestone buddy, there are no alternatives to get it outside of the ore deposits. You can get a whole bunch of Titanium by finding Metal Salvage and scanning fragments of blueprints you already have, and this makes it so I'm not looking for limestone nearly as often and thus missing out on a lot of Copper.

Thermal is the BEST power source IMO. Thermal is nice for later game bases, if you want one in the lost River there's loads of heat sources around even in the safer areas. You don't need to farm uranium/lead for your reactor rods. Just set your thermals and forget them. Your example of them "barely being able to power a medium size base" while you're sitting at 800/1000 power, you're only using ONE thermal plants energy production there. Each thermal plant holds 250 energy and the energy production doesn't kick in until you drop into the next power plants capacity. So with several power stations your energy production ramps up as your power level decreases.
I for one use 4 of these in the lost river and they power 2 water filters and a power cell charger for ions. Two ion cells at once and there's a power shortage. But there's usually room for more thermal plants. You just need to put a foundation beside a heat area and you have a platform that can hold several thermal plants.
Plus they build externally and you don't have to build a room to hold your nuclear reactor.

2 for materials I've seen different people complain about different kinds of materials being rare and having to much of others. Usually from what I've gathered the cause is different preferences in buildings and such. Some things need more of one material while others need tons of another material. Also lots of people under utilize the scanner room which can be very helpful in finding resources
3 yeah the Pathfinder is really neat and useful. But it definitely is easy to forget as caves aren't navigated that often.
4 it's all about the sound design and their biomes ambience but yeah once you figure them out they are only unnerving
5 yeah cyclops is very good to have it's just that you don't want to take it into every nook and cranny
6 why would you want to do something tedious like killing all the leviathans?
7 thermal is neat cause it's basically solar panels for deep down where it's hot but they are finicky to get to work well. They are great for getting a quick base for some oxygen and crafting up down in the lava zone if I remember correctly.
8 yeah below zero is a pretty good game but they flopped on the writing and it being a sequel to Subnautica makes the world feel wrong cause of how tight everything is designed. Also I despise the sea truck with a passion, so yeah bz is the worst game ever made /j

Context: I've had Subnautica for a long time, but never finished it. Though I did watch playthroughs of it years ago.
Now that my skills in survival games have greatly increased (and I hoped I had forgotten more of the game than I did), I decided to give it try. So here are some thoughts from my first playthrough to the end:
After I got the Prawn suit with an grapple arm and drill, none of the hostile creatures were dangerous anymore. There were some high moments, but never scary, as it is pretty easy to outmaneuver all of them.
I even defeated few leviathans with it, when I found out you can just grapple at their back to stay away from their grabbing range.
My main power source was mainly thermal + solar for 2 bases (one where I kept 2 moonpools for the Prawn and Moth, near the surface. And another at the ghost leviathan egg tree, where I decided to setup a scanner room to view third of the underground area, which idk if it was the best place to put it in).
There simply wasn't enough power consumption to make me switch to nuclear energy. I mostly attribute this to having too many batteries and power cells, as I was able to rotate them efficiently with the limited power supply I had. (Though after I found the messed up thing that you can put fish in the bio reactor (like if one annoyed you, for example), I decided to build that too :} )
After that, it was easy sailing from there, to find where the precursor structures were and finish the game. It was still enjoyable, though definitely not how you are expected to play it, and many items unused, as I still knew enough to avoid stupid decisions.
Edit: 7:25 Nuclear power? Supercomputer?! We can rebuild Ile Seguin in Subnautica!

The Cyclops is just super hard to navigate through places with creatures that can hurt it, making it not worth it to go through the Lost River with all of its ghost juveniles. Every single thing you turn on/off (shield, sonar) uses so much energy I swear. Once you get the blueprint for ion power cells, you can just go through the teleporter with the prawn and it's 3000x faster. So while the Cyclops isn't totally useless, for most of the game I find it HARDER to use it than to not.
...and when you DO find the alien thermal plant, you should head straight for the containment facility to cure youself, so that you can explore without warpers attacking you. There are 4 teleporters there.
Also I don't need 4 scanner rooms in my outpost in the lost river, all I have there is a moonpool with some stuff in it, and 2 thermal plants work just fine.

    • @daviddragonheart6798
      @daviddragonheart6798 3 месяца назад +1

Silent running, low speed. And the Ghost Leviathans in the Lost River are easy to get around. Even IF one hits you, they more often then not coil away after they land a hit. By the time they turn back to face you again, you're probably out of aggro range.
The Lava Castle teleporter is pretty convenient, especially since that means you can keep a base near the QEP (WOULD NOT RECOMMEND, REAPERS AND WARPERS SCARY). You COULD use the Lava Castle itself as a base, though with the Sea Dragon that wanders around outside, unless you killed it or glitched it into the walls, it's a pain to deal with repairs.

I personally like to hybridize my energy production. Solar + bioreactor or thermal + bioreactor has sustained me for all my purposes.
I also move some energy intensive equipment to offsite facilities. I make a water treatment plant that has several solar panels and a few water filtration machines crammed into a multipurpose room. That produces many of my necessities while freeing up power and space in my other bases.

If you have only 1 of course it’s not that good but 3 or more basically your golden unless your running 7 water filtration machines. One thermal plant at 60 c (which is the low end of the heat of the lava lakes) makes 46.2 energy per minute if you x that by 4 it is 184.8 power per minute now inactive lava zone is usually not that hot so lets take 50 c for inactive lava zone one thermal plant can make 33 points of energy per minute x that by 4 and it is 132 which means for it to be a negative power source you would need something to drain greater then 132 power per minute 1 water filtration machine used 51 points of energy per minute which means just on 4 thermal plants u can fully power 2 water filtration machines and have some extra energy

Building - by the time I get it I have my base in progress. One voyage and I'm done. The seamoth (or prawn) can easily carry everything needed to establish an outpost.
Exploring - above 900m the seamoth has you covered. Below 900m the prawn has you covered. Both offer better solutions to combat leviathans.
Experiencing the world? Sure; if I got it at the beginning of the game.

8:08 okay. What constitutes a 'medium' size base?
I have two thermal plants running my safe shallows 'outpost' (it is a legitimate base as this occured before any depth modules were found). The seamoth, the water filtration unit and four batteries are not enough for me to lose power. The plants are only in the 50s.
What else needs to be running? Scanner? Doesn’t need to run 24/7. Powercells? Why are so many running low? Sounds like miss management to me. Exterior lights? Yeah... I can see that. Still some work arounds for it.
(Not trying to be mean; genuinely curious)
Power transmitters are, also, not a problem. Between shale and sandstone I have so much more gold than I ever need. Daisy chaining 10 power tranmitters accross the safe shallows was nothing.
Your base sounds needlessly energy intensive; especially considering how most objects don't consume any power...
