Internet 3.0 might help a ton since the idea of it is local servers in homes so maybe servers will be a lot closer, keeping in mind that epic develops an application that maybe rewards people who operate a servers. Another cool concept I have is digital artists developing assets (like skins, clothing, helmets, weapons, etc.) that’s why I’m excited, I really want to create sick Star Wars /cyberpunk inspired helmets
I expect this Metaverse to take advantage of the new product Unreal has made with MetaHuman. Life like avatars along with the ability to be anything you want with reasonable realism. My only question was where headsets would be in the future , mobile chips can get only so good. I guess that's where cloud computing comes in . We already have massive lag between win10 devices due to the systems over systems over systems problem. I tried talking to my son over Steam voice chat and it's got a half second delay. The game has 0 delay. That tells me it's either a Bluetooth or other voice over software problem.
We're not as far as people think tho, as far as graphics are concerned, we're getting huge improvements each year in the PC/Consoles, an now with the tech giants finally setting their sights on VR and the prospect of the Metaverse I'd say we're about to see massive growth and technological advancements in these next few years in this area. The signs were clearly there the last couple of years. Certainly exiting prospects to look foward to.

a true Metaverse would include games like Elite Dangerous and Galactic Survival as options you can do there. not everyone wants or does a lot of social things online. BUT they surely DO spend a lot of time online doing what interest them, so a Metaverse would have to have places and 'jobs' for everyone not just the Sims group (sorry)
Sony invested 200 millions. Sony already tryed to do something like that called PS home. It was really cool for a scocial platform and many other have tryed to do something like Ps home but no one succeed. Dont know why ps home was shut down but i can just imagine where we would be if sony had continued to push the tech and we would have ps home on ps5. I hope that epic project will succeed. they surely made something crazy impressive with their UE5 tech demo and the new Metahumain creator thats is just insane and miles further than anything we seen in video games.
I played PS Home and it was extremely way ahead of its time, which is why it probably died off. Not many people felt the need to go into a home hub to talk/launch games with friends, when you could go into a voice chat and launch the game itself easier. VR would have revolutionized PS Home, and if it was still around today it would undoubtedly have VR support. But again, it was too ahead of its time.

It’s unreal 5 engine. PlayStation home is completely different. With meta verse you can literally build yourself onto the screen. Meta verse is also going to be used in Sony entertainment and many other places. Technology is huge in this era and vr is going to take off in a couple years. So I don’t see how you think this would fall.
It won't. Even if an early iteration of it isn't as succesful as estimated, this is clearly the future. The question now isn't IF this is gonna work, the question is just WHEN will it be possible for us to accomplish it. It's like someone in the late 90's doubting the growth of the internet.
I've limited faith in epic games. Open Source allows better RnD - something that is a continual requirement for highly complex projects like the Internet, and Epic Games project will suffer under such weight without the enablement of open sourcing this.
Let's say microsoft make simple chat as 3D characters walking on your desktop screen. All time when you are in front of your pc, you see this characters / real friends and you can chat with them, with keyboard, microphone or even open some 3D world to play (like facebook VR converence). For example your friend says let's play minecraft and in front of your character apears an image of the game and you just touch them and start playing like you would regulary. This can easly exist today, and I don't see what is all about, except that you don't have VR hardware to be more natural, but like they said, you don't have to have VR to use Metaverse concept. So what else is all about I don't get it, is it like playing one game as character and you use this character in another game? Still don't get it, but for start I guess microsoft should to this concept that I said, I don't see how this is not a first step. I understand about hardware and VR, but VR is not everything for Metaverse. If point is to just "walk in" in the game, then there is google stadia.
Metaverse looks like 2nd Life with better graphics or a VR-Discord. I'm not sure humans will be ready to induldge in this stressfull communication just for communications sake if the "verse" itself is not a good game. I would feel uncomfortable in such an environment.
what do you think of vrchat and recroom? where there are private rooms and game rooms as well? So you can stay in your private room and just access your games, either alone or with friends who can be with you in that private room. or you can head out to a cafe or diner or club and hang out there with random people to have some fun. or you can go to a concert like sansar or other events. or you can go play games or shop for clothes created in maps within the metaverse itself... it raelly doesn't have to be that uncomfortable all the time, only when you want to :)

I just cannot see it as a mass phenomenon in the future. The things I have seen so far look like a lobby for Forthnight which would yield a big userbase in itself.

I can't tell if you're joking but I'm pretty sure the entire reason Facebook is rushing into Meta despite everything they've shown being very crude mock ups made in Unity is because they're actually scared of Epic and trying to get ahead when they still can. What they do have so far outside of games is just a VR chatroom. Some of Meta's pushes have also been using Epic resources such as the VR adaptions of San Andreas and RE4... Which both run on UE4. On the hardware end, Meta's biggest VR competitor is Sony which seems to be gearing up to release PSVR2 next year along with a lot of AAA games. With a quiet talk it'll be connected to Epic's Metaverse. And on my view as a 3D artist... I would not bet against Unreal Engine 5. From the things I've done with later versions of 4 and the newest, I don't ever see Meta competing. Like they didn't even have a direction in their weird Unity presentation. They could have done anything but it was just Zuckerberg standing in a very sterile house in front of what looked like a jpeg of some islands.
