This whole system is designed for 3 major reasons: 1) To steal intellectual property from its users. People using this platform will give up every single thought of their own. Big data will sell it to industries who may benefit from it. 2) Resource distribution. The more time people spend in virtual reality. The less time they spend consuming resources. Thus, leaving resources to be controlled by a smaller group of consumers and reducing inflation. 3) Security surveillance. By having people's behavior surveilled through the "metaverse" agencies can more easily purchase specific behavior patterns of potential "security threats". The metaverse will use WIFI to transmit, (literally) every breath you take, via technology similar to radar. The "metaverse" is in an extremely early phase of development, and will require a lot more addiction and coercion (public "safety") to get everybody to live in their jail cells (In psychology, they call it "Crate Training.) Thus the expression: "You will own nothing and be happy."
I didn't realize I was so popular and that the world revolved around me so much.... I think this is too slippery slope. People are generally aware of that kind of data collection so if it really becomes this thing that dehumanizes us and makes people feel like they live in a jail cell, then people will drop Meta like a rock like they quit social media now. The reality is you as an intelligent consumer have to be aware of these things, educate others, and shut down and not support things that go too far. Chances are if they go too far people will take note as they are now. I like the idea of having a customizable digital space made from things that aren't really there. you shouldn't be so pessimistic about these things. And it isn't a jail cell anymore than the jail cell that already exists if you want to think of it that way. It will just change forms - from your viewpoint. And VR sounds better than chopping down trees and polluting the environment to make crap you often don't need either way.
@@evo2542 Good points taken: That is where coercion comes in the form of "public safety". Big data already sells factors concerning resource consumption and human reproduction. This information is dynamically used to measure real time social behavior in cycles of coercion and addiction. When online users become aware of the addictive patterns that state-run businesses push, the algorithms send notifications to governments and special interest groups , at which point they create a catalyst from an array of "public safety" issues (the Catalyst Array for omnipresent guilt of being alive) to push people back into their homes, isolate social interactions and reintroduce addictive meta simulation. Each time this occurs the special interest groups expect a greater addictive dependancy response towards social interaction and reduction of resource consumption, via virtual reality. The pattern will repeat itself until nonessentials live in their domiciles as prisons and accept it as normal living standards. All socializing will be monitored through surveillance technologies. To stop this from happening, lower income and non essentials must stop reproducing and enjoy their life within the current population. People would still be able to live a meaningful and fulfilling life, just not with kids. It is a sacrifice future generations must make in order to avoid a virtual prison. I am not trying to be pessimistic; I am trying to be quite the opposite. I think that all things considered, too many people are on this planet and the special interest groups want their resources. Too many people are encroaching on their power. This would normally lead to civil unrest and world wars. But I think virtual reality might be a good way to minimize worse-case scenerios. But if we want to avoid virtual prisons all together, stop making babies. I consider myself a non essential and have already sterilized myself. I still enjoy life and balance reality with virtual reality.
@@evo2542 at some point though you would have to be intelligent like you said and if you see something you’re supposed to educate anyone who isn’t aware of such a possibility. considering how crazy life can get every single minute with the stories getting around in these days it becomes a real possibility. Therefore like you said yourself educate people is a good start. Also who is quitting social media? You are out of touch with this reality I clearly see, data easily shows the skyrocket potential the social media age has for the future. The numbers are growing not plummeting. It’s pretty dangerous to catch on late to things, people forget there’s always a starting point for the dawn of a new era.
I agree that music and his enthusiasm had me really getting excited and wanting to give my money to hurry this along. Just think metaverse mixed with nurolink mixed with that euphoria you get from all the best drugs you’d have the world addicted.
I totally agree. I really dont don't understand how the algorithm is failing you man. You should be on the 100. Thouthen by now. Keep pushing! You will get there!
VR is one of those things like social media itself: it sounds interesting and positive in its presentation....in reality it is extremely fraught with SO many social pitfalls when humans interact with it at large scales. Social media has become a cancer on society, more and more people I know are distancing themselves from it because we're increasingly aware that we are biologically incompatible with it. Do people seriously think ubiquitous AR/VR will be any different if not MUCH worse? I can support VR development as a technology, not as a broad social engineering platform.
This will be decades away. Compute power, internet upgrades, VR improvements and most importantly compelling content. It took 5 years to make world of warcraft on private servers imagine a full interactive metaverse. 20 years at the very least. It took Australia 20 years just to get faster internet and we still don't have it.

The metaverse doesn’t actually sound too complicated in concept. It’s just the internet in a VR/AR environment. They’ll push devices with the capability, and create new ones so people will interact with the internet like that.
Its going to take over the world. Billionaires will be made from apps and ill be one of them. The hardware and cost will shrink as the programming and value increases.
Yeah, under the wing of Facebook. How do people not understand the problem with this? Facebook is quite literally putting their foot in the door of the future. I’m certain a “metaverse” will become a reality, and Facebook has already claimed control of it
Right! I tried watching Mark’s video on it (and that’s how I found this video) and honestly, truly, it’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of. In fact, it makes my stomach curdle. What’s the point of real life, with this? Feels like the first baby step to Wall-E, where we just exist in suspended animation irl, only really living in the metaverse. It’s like if all the humans in the Matrix voluntarily climbed into their goo-tubes. It’s like Dwight Schrute’s goofy Second Life obsession. *** Fwiw I’m very pro-progress: technology, medicine, society, the arts; progress is good. The Metaverse looks like a weird ass offshoot into an anemic parallel universe i’d rather avoid. Why not just funnel all the efforts being poured into the Multiverse into, instead, working together to make the actual world as mind blowingly stunning and full of adventure as possible?

I feel when things do start becoming more connected in that way inevitably, there will be communities who end up deciding to go live somewhere with none of that kinda tech. Not getting rid of tech completely, but just being very minimalist with it. I won't. Sounds boring AF. I wanna see the future. Yeah there are going to be bumps along the way but I think they will be smoothed out as time goes on, and with the right awareness and action in the right places.
the problem is when zuck said you're inside rather than looking at it. Er, wearing a screen on your head doesn't make you inside it. You're still looking at a screen that is bulky and heavy on your head. Also I heard lots of claims, but I don't see how they could pull it off with today's tech. Maybe in a hundred years, but processors, lag, battery life is a big issue that make this not viable. Its like an attempt to create an iphone using 1980s battery tech
Incredible video - really liked how you were able to capture the concept of the Metaverse and how you connected it to other moments in the past! Hope you make more videos expanding on this :)
Definitely going to make more videos about the Metaverse. There is so much good content out there. Matthew Ball has done a really good job laying everything out.
But he did completely ignore the point that many, if not most people do not want to strap a box to their face. The Metaverse isn't going to have that "iPhone moment" until someone makes VR/AR glasses that are near the size and weight of regular sunglasses. Not to mention that current VR/AR hardware is till rather expensive and held up in shipping delays that are likely to go on for years. The upgrades necessary are going to be painfully slow. And what about growing distrust of big tech? many like this "metaverse" concept", but NOT through Facebook. Others feel similarly about Google, Apple and Amazon. There is a reckoning brewing there that hasn't reared it's ugly head yet. I predict a great war between the tech providers and their users by the end of this century.
I am not sceptical about metaverse, it's great, but imo his concept of connecting light bulb invention and apple phone is irrelevant at all. You can compare light bulb invention with how pre historic human find a way to light a fire, but it's obviously different from apple phone, since with or without apple launching his product, smart phone will exist, but if pre historic human never learn about how to light a fire, maybe until now we human are +- the same with other animal.

In all that expanse of time and exploration, this video is by far the best and most accurate description of the Metaverse I’ve ever seen. Outstanding work. Thank you! Subscribed.
It's just yet another attempt at popularizing VR that will be doomed to failure. People just do not want to strap a box to their face. Maybe you enjoy it, but most are not interested. VR based internet or "the metaverse" as we are calling it now, will not have widespread adoption until the goggles are the size and weight or regular sunglasses, and the hardware to support them is much, much more inexpensive and available. Also, on top of that we are having serious shortages computer hardware. It's a lot more difficult for people to upgrade their systems for VR. I don't know why Facebook thinks everyone is going to run out and get an Occulus and top shelf video card, when demand has cranked up the prices and it takes 6 months to get it shipped. Maybe in another 10-20 years. But not now. It's just a marketing stunt to take attention off the bad press Facebook has been getting.
@@peterbelanger4094 I told a co-worker yesterday you need around $4,000 to get a good VR set up if you're starting with nothing. The average working person isn't going to spend that sort of money on VR when it can go to rent, groceries, or transportation.

So insightful. I am looking forward to you explaining all this in context of Facebook's announcement of it's new name Meta and it's functionalities associated with that.
If the metaverse becomes successful, it’ll change life as we know it. Similar, in a way, to Ready Player One. It wouldn’t be just about gaming, but life (to an extent) itself.

You're only talking about the most ideal development with the most ideal outcome, which will most likely not happen. These are your points un-hyped: 1. Local- and server-progress is saved. Like minecraft. 2. Most is realtime, not recorded. Like minecraft. 3. Starts by talking about augmented reality, but ends up talking about virtual simulations and enviroments instead. 4. People can play at the same time. Like minecraft (Only a lot more) 5. You can sell stuff. Like on ebay 6. Applications will either be programmed with a shared fundamental structure so they may interchange content (Which sounds incredibly unecessarily troublesome). Or, more applications may collab for shared content. 7. Devoted users can create custom digital assets. Like skins He blows it up a lot bigger than it is by comparing it to big inventions from the past (A common technique). But this can be done with anything and everything. You can draw similarities between tesla and cornflakes, to make cornflakes sound like you just invented flying cars. It's evident his job in this video is to sell us this product, especially by the way he only speaks about ideal outcomes with not a single critique, together with the cinematic background music.
The music and the editing adds much more than the narration IMO, it's the kind of hype you typically see in apple or tesla marketing videos. It would be nice if all that talent went into making some actual crazy original fiction than pumping some shit companies' stocks.
As a developer who has tried vr development, I have to point out that the biggest problem in vr is not technical limitation, but 3D Motion Sickness, which is more like a medical issue. If human body can't even keep using the device for several hours, how is vr supposed to be the next smart phone? But well, MR is better in terms of motion sickness.
The metaverse would've been so much better if it was built by the community slowly instead of quickly being built by a single profit company with ulterior motives
I haven't been to a mall in years, but I do miss that experience of just random window shopping. So imagine being able to do that virtually - right now we can "min/max" shopping by searching for best deals (product quality vs cost), cross-referenced with reviews (where some reviews are sincere, some reviews are paid for, and some are just fake bot-spam). But with more casual shopping where you're not looking for anything in particular, or maybe looking for a gift -- being able to browse wares, and that game of advertising trying to convince you they're the best deal (or even if they aren't the best deal, their brand has some sort of sentimental value). But old mall shopping was more than that - not just shopping for an item, but also just meeting people who may be shopping for similar things, and getting ideas of kinds of products out there. You could virtually have that experience again with an Avatar in a virtual mall - you get ideas of things maybe you hadn't considered, plus in the virtual side you could customize things (I need a bed like this, but a little taller; can I get product X in this color instead?) etc, and then it can be made to order for you -- and that's more efficient than stores warehousing inventory and guessing what people need. I wonder if companies will be more open about specs of their products - dimensions and STL or 3D model files of parts. That's key to people making mods or accessories, or replacement to broken parts -- where you can just 3D print a replacement (or order one from a print shop) -- like imaging just 3D printing a whole remote control or headphones, with very little assembly needed. But also just printing cable brackets or small things. But we copyright songs and media - what of the creative talent for making industrial shapes of things?

I research passively, listening to audiobooks and podcasts on 2x speed while doing random stuff, so it’s not an exact amount of time. I write about 10 words per minute so a script like this takes ~4 hours.

I think using a ‘game’ as a way to describe the Metaverse is a misconception. That is too centralized of a concept. The Metaverse is simply the visualization of our digital universe. Anything that is digital today exists in the metaverse and we’ll visualize those things in new ways in the future - be it on screen in real life, through a screen in real life (AR) or All screen with real life blocked out/obscured (VR).

How the hell do you not mention Nikola Tesla in your "electrification" example, you said Edison built the first power plant, then 40 years later electricity was everywhere, if not for Tesla and his AC power that we all use still to this day, there would have been a power plant every block because of Edison's garbage efficiency. He claimed Tesla's AC was so dangerous, that he killed animals on street corners using AC in a dangerous manner. Meanwhile, his first electrical patent was... a DC Electric Chair!! So God damned sad to see how this lack of knowledge and the suppression of Nikola Tesla's genius has continued. I stopped watching after that garbage.
You are really talking about this like a AMAZINGLY GREAT thing for people.. I don't like anything being presented with just good side.. Addiction, desocialization>mental health, physical health>working from home and gaming.. And the most important fact is that _Metaverse_ is owned by a company that has ALL of your data, also even worse of data is that they know you in soul, think about what all you told someone through texts, if you sent someone nudes, they have it all stored.. If you doubt so, think about how could police restore deleted messages if they weren't stored anywhere?
10:30 from a technical standpoint, thats not how it works you dont stream the image off a server, you just get info of where everything is. The biggest reason why large scale games like minecraft but with high quality graphics don't exist is simply because it is not profitable.
Curious about the point at the end about Facebook vs Crypto in creation of the metaverse. Couldn't facebook plausibly embrace crypto for payments in their "metaverse"? Curious if a company of cypto enthusiasts would need to form to build a metaverse or if there is some other link I am missing. Really great video :)
Facebook is definitely working on integrating crypto. They tried with Libra, but it didn’t take off. They will continue to try, but it’s unclear if people will get on-board broadly. There are already several major crypto projects focused on metaverses and everyone is thinking about it long term. We might end up with an iPhone vs Android situation, where Facebook creates a very polished Metaverse that is a closed walled garden (like the iPhone) and crypto creates an open Metaverse (like Android). I’m going to go deeper on the crypto side of the Metaverse in a future video.
@@JohnCooganPlus Facebook can never be a player in crypto, because we have the blockchain, and the wealthy won't connect there wallet to a 'Facebook' account or any other account. It's about 'anonymous' payments, and Facebook is worser then a State
This was an instant sub, quality content. I believe the metaverse will be the next step of technology but it will have to be consumer friendly for it to take off. Good, video, finally something that fully explains it, just as I imagined, essentially Ready Player One, a Persistent VR world with huge number of users and potential to do all sorts of activities from gaming to business with VR AR and crypto being at the centre of it's technology and economy but most importantly a potential for creative people to feed and monetize on their content and all others play to earn.
@@evo2542 Good points taken:
That is where coercion comes in the form of "public safety".
The metaverse doesn’t actually sound too complicated in concept. It’s just the internet in a VR/AR environment. They’ll push devices with the capability, and create new ones so people will interact with the internet like that.
MMORPG in vr basically you mean
Its going to take over the world. Billionaires will be made from apps and ill be one of them. The hardware and cost will shrink as the programming and value increases.
Yeah, under the wing of Facebook. How do people not understand the problem with this? Facebook is quite literally putting their foot in the door of the future. I’m certain a “metaverse” will become a reality, and Facebook has already claimed control of it

Exactly what I’m going for! Thanks!
The more I hear about the "metaverse" the more I want to be an Amish
The more I want to invest in projects at a ground level. Front run the masses. 😎
Good luck with that
@@elokabenson8921 if you only knew how much my initial lump investment in MATIC when it was only .10 this past Feb has yielded me, you wouldn’t be wishing me good luck, bro.
I'm honestly just commenting in hopes to help the algorithm find you. Amazing stuff. :)
the problem is when zuck said you're inside rather than looking at it.

You can compare light bulb invention with how pre historic human find a way to light a fire, but it's obviously different from apple phone, since with or without apple launching his product, smart phone will exist, but if pre historic human never learn about how to light a fire, maybe until now we human are +- the same with other animal.

why would you work against your own species
The Metaverse may be the worst invention of all time.

After metaverse will definitely come full dive. Sad tho, bc i dont see any concrete way to stop ppl using these devices from gradually losing or never even learning real world social skills and communication.
You're only talking about the most ideal development with the most ideal outcome, which will most likely not happen. These are your points un-hyped:
1. Local- and server-progress is saved. Like minecraft.
2. Most is realtime, not recorded. Like minecraft.
3. Starts by talking about augmented reality, but ends up talking about virtual simulations and enviroments instead.
4. People can play at the same time. Like minecraft (Only a lot more)
5. You can sell stuff. Like on ebay
6. Applications will either be programmed with a shared fundamental structure so they may interchange content (Which sounds incredibly unecessarily troublesome). Or, more applications may collab for shared content.
7. Devoted users can create custom digital assets. Like skins
He blows it up a lot bigger than it is by comparing it to big inventions from the past (A common technique).
Also thank you for the talking points and descriptions.
This is so frightening for our privacy
I think this will be the make it or break it point for a lot of big tech companies, let's hope only the most honest survive.
For sure, definitely going to be a big transformation.
Only the richest corporations will survive not the most honest.
Thank you Mr. Coogan, for creating exciting futuristic content.
They could have spent that annual $5B on solving problems in the real-o-verse.

Love hearing that! We’ll get there eventually. The growth has been really good so far!

I think using a ‘game’ as a way to describe the Metaverse is a misconception. That is too centralized of a concept. The Metaverse is simply the visualization of our digital universe. Anything that is digital today exists in the metaverse and we’ll visualize those things in new ways in the future - be it on screen in real life, through a screen in real life (AR) or All screen with real life blocked out/obscured (VR).
That describes it perfectly. Definitely more than a game.

It's about 'anonymous' payments, and Facebook is worser then a State
@@xand2870 fr why u even using crypto at that point
Fuck crypto.
This was an instant sub, quality content. I believe the metaverse will be the next step of technology but it will have to be consumer friendly for it to take off. VR sets are quite expensive and need powerful computers to render, and that sort of product will be a niche in the market. I know that in the last 30 years tech advances were unthinkable and that gives me hope but with real crysis like the microchip shortage we recently suffered and the rising prices of rare metals it will be a challenge for sure. Hey, did i already mentioned your content is amazing?
Good, video, finally something that fully explains it, just as I imagined, essentially Ready Player One, a Persistent VR world with huge number of users and potential to do all sorts of activities from gaming to business with VR AR and crypto being at the centre of it's technology and economy but most importantly a potential for creative people to feed and monetize on their content and all others play to earn. Suddenly you start to see how Facebook AR, Starlink, Oculus and crypto can be all connected together
Yes YEZ
YESS I WANT REQDY PLAYER ONE TO BE REAL I WILL SPENDNYH4 MONEY FOR IT !!! :O
Maybe not ON facebook tho. But like as its own world /server?? Server makes more sense then social media.... with multiple other servers/rooms to go to and such
