    “An obsession with operating at the lowest level of detail”. Exactly! The only thing I would say differently is there’s an obsession with perfecting operations at the lowest level of detail. And that my friends is what distinguishes successful companies from unsuccessful ones today in the service industry.

    The bottom line is that doordash is making billion's and paying the driver's peanuts. I'm a full time dasher for 4 years now and the pay keeps going down compared to what it used to be. The biggest reason why is because of too many driver's. The orders used to be a lot more and with peak pay would make more money. Now peak pay is very rare because of so many driver's they don't need to pay extra. I still do the job though because of the freedom to work when I want and no boss to guilt trip you if you're sick.

    I live in an extremely rural area. Maps gets us lost all the time, takes us down one way streets the wrong way. One thing I noticed is there is no option for help if map's has you lost and the customer cannot explain how to get to their house. It can affect your completion and other ratings. Plus you cannot use night map and it does not tell you the speed limit on the dasher map. One more thing I wish the app had was a take me back the way I came button. So if you don't know your way around you can easily get back the way you came.

    In 1996, my first job (at 17) was delivery driver for a small business in Wichita KS called Dial-A-Waiter. They had partnered with local upcscale resteraunts to provide delivery services. Customers would call Dial-A-Waiter, and the owner would take their order, process payment if paying with plastic, fax/call the orders to the resteraunts and dispatch the drivers. We used Motorola 2 way radios to communicate and were steadily busy each shift. Considering that the orders were for resteraunts that weren't cheap, the tips alone made it worthwhile.

    Peter Thiel has a saying that you shouldn't start a restaurant in Palo Alto, because it is a classic example of an overcrowded market where all the profits get competed away.
    However, Thiel didn't say anything about starting a restaurant delivery service in Palo Alto. This Thielian loophole is what the DoorDash founders discovered and exploited to build their business, while still ensuring full compliance with the core tenets of Thielian business philosophy.

    I don't like doordash. I started ordering pickup, and they removed the restaurants that I order pick-up from off my map. Trying to force me into delivery. Sending my delivery order to the Chipotle across town, increasing my minimum tip for the driver. I found if you search your order history you can place a pickup order through your order history

    • @NathaNeil27
      @NathaNeil27 2 года назад +1

      DoorDash consistently has drivers pick up orders from restaurants that are 20+ minutes more drive time than if the driver had just picked up from the restaurant only 5 minutes away. If there are McDonalds everywhere, don't send drivers to one of the furthest ones! Wtf?! Source: I was a driver for a week before deciding a normal job paid more. I have a friend that can't keep a job but drives for DoorDash and they have confirmed nothing has changed since I was a driver.

    The gig delivery apps are revolutionary but the premise is quite simple really. Without GPS technology none of this happens. Algorithms to match drivers with orders is nothing groundbreaking. But putting these elements together is what makes the magic happen and the founders of these companies deserve the financial rewards for what they've accomplished. There will be many changes that will be essential for the survival of these companies and they will learn these lessons and adapt or they will die a quick death. Customer service always requires a level of human interaction and synergy between all parties for success. This seems to be lacking in the early stages of the apps evolution but as I said they will learn or pay the price. And at the end of the day....the app leadership know that people are willing to do just about anything for money. All companies know that the biggest strength they have lies in that simple premise and their ability to capitalize on that fact.

    Making your drivers solely depend on tips is unethical. You wouldn't believe how many people do not tip their drivers. I've made as low as $6 dollars in one hr, because of how saturated things are in my small college town. When you are forced to use the drive-through, and everyone and their grandma are also using the drive-through ( most of them are other delivery drivers), it makes for an extremely long wait, an incredible amount of wasted gas, and carbon emissions. Not to mention you are only paid for the delivery itself, not for your time waiting to get someone's food, and then having to find the address with the customer's shit-ass instructions. Like if someone lives in the dorm, the student will put the address of the college and not the actual dorm... Yeah... there is a reason you only need a 2.0 GPA to get in.

    DoorTrash is awful. They've created an almost monopoly in my area, and their drivers fuck up so often I now will frequently just cancel my order when I see they'll be delivering. Apparently they'll hire any crayon eating smooth brain with a set of Fisher Price car keys. I've had them do everything from not pick up the whole order, to be unable to find the house (because they are too illiterate to follow the simple delivery instructions), to just not show up at all, and I then had to fight with DoorTrash to get my money back. I rarely had these kinds of problems when it was in-house delivery people. None of the delivery companies are great, but DoorTrash is the worst.

    There are a lot of immigrants that waiting for uscis to send their work permits. They have a ssn or itin, drivers license and car insurance. That makes you to be able to drive for doordash and other side gigs. But you cant work in a regular job. (Search immigration lawyer youtube channels and check the comments. There a millions of people living inside the us waiting for a piece of paper from uscis for years)
    So they can use this work force for themselves. Restaurants are looking for cooks but there are dasher waiting outside for restaurants to cook faster. I still cant see any channel focusing on this topic and see how a huge work force is being used. People are renting their doordash accounts on facebook groups. I disagree. As Tony Xu has said multiple times, they're not a food company, so it's not in their DNA to solve world hunger. It's all about logistics. These guys want to make processes a little more efficient and be paid handsomely for it. Fixing world hunger is about reducing consumption, waste, and inequality around the world. Plus there's a good chance that world hunger is unsolvable, because more accessible food = more humans = more hunger. It's an endless vicious circle. Fixing hunger requires authoritarian government intervention.
