Thanks everyone for the comments. There's a few that point out Mark is saying Meta wants to work with everyone to connect the worlds together. That might be true. But the way Meta has been presented isn't to be just one player in the metaverse, but to be the main player that brings all the others together. That's where they've already lost, as it's highly unlikely they'll be able to achieve that.
The more established Metaverse companies like Unity, Unreal and Nvidia are already looking to help build a common standard that lets us travel between worlds. And they are all against Facebook being a part of it. As Ryan Gill says in this article "The open metaverse is created and owned by all of us. The metaverse that Mark Zuckerberg and his company want is created by everybody but owned by them." www.foxbusiness.com/politics/plenty-pitfalls-mark-zuckerbergs-metaverse-plan
And as Tim Sweeney said back in 2016 "This Metaverse is going to be far more pervasive and powerful than anything else. If one central company gains control of this, they will become more powerful than any government and be a god on Earth."
This video does a great job explaining the weird vibe from the Meta announcement even better - "Something isn't right about Meta's Metaverse" ruclips.net/video/YYf9465wtXg/видео.html
(And for the best explanation of the progress towards a common standard for the Metaverse, read Matthew Ball's article here "Interchange Tools + Standards and the Metaverse" www.matthewball.vc/all/interchangemetaverse

I can’t believe I’m about to defend Meta here, but I find this video rather disingenuous to be honest.
First of all, the Metaverse is not here already. We have a few individual siloed off game worlds with no connection to any of the others. That’s not a Metaverse. We’re not anywhere close to the interconnected and omnipresent virtual future we all want to see.
Second, I find it really silly to equate any kind of flatscreen content with the Metaverse. Without VR and AR, all you have is basically the Internet. Flatscreen content completely lacks the immersion of what is usually meant by the term Metaverse.
Third, Meta as a company has done some amazing things for Virtual Reality since their acquisition of Oculus. I am pretty sure that this push of theirs towards making the Metaverse a reality will help bring it about much sooner than it otherwise would have been here. And that’s a good thing.
I am not a big fan of Meta’s business practices, and I think it’s really important that other companies play a huge role here as well to make sure we end up with an uncentralised and free Metaverse that is not controlled by any one entity. But credit where credit is due. Ignoring the role that Meta is likely to play in the development of the Metaverse over the next few years is either dishonest or ignorant.

I do not even know what to say about this. I am 14 and I just hope that this stays rather small because I have a terrible feeling that this will become the beginning of the dystopian future with companies soon enough controlling our lives. We should not be using the internet to this extent as this will have a catastrophic effect on humanity. Imagine 10-20 years from now what the world will be like if we keep going in this path. Not even 20 years ago the internet was very scarce and people used it as a accessory and not as part of daily life. This is frustrating as there is nothing that most people can possibly do. Even the current generation are concerned about the “metaverse.” Every year that passes; the less likely I think that the internet is a fad and more a way of life. We need stop being online all the time as this will have a terrible effect on us and the future generations. 14 here too. One side of me is genuinely fuckin terrified, other side of me makes the situation sound too hellish to be true or successful. But there is an extremely small chance the metaverse will take over real life, since not only is the majority of the worlds economy and business based in real life, but lower income developing countries have little access to the things we have, and taking them over with the metaverse is going to be impossible. Im mostly scared that the future generations will disregard this anti-metaverse logic and see us how we see boomers, because if the people themselves are sucked into it then thats when humanity is lost.
However, the metaverse (at least in facebook's/meta's perception), is without a doubt going to fail. With everyone perfectly in control under the influence of meta, the world just wont be able to function properly. Plus most people disagree with it.

As a software engineer who has specialized in virtual reality and has been working in this industry for some time, I have to disagree with the majority of this video.
First, "Look at all these virtual worlds that already exist, Mark is late", virtual worlds are not a metaverse. Games that take you into virtual worlds, are not a metaverse. The metaverse is the connective tissue that allow you to navigate among many virtual worlds. Therefore, Mark is not late, but rather him creating an ecosystem for these virtual worlds is him actually creating the metaverse. I would go one step further and say that a metaverse requires a certain level of immersion that is not possible with 2D screens and requires spatial computing to relocate the user in the virtual world, either through virtual reality or augmented reality.
Second, "Mark isn't even making tools to create virtual worlds in so he's not even working on the metaverse". This is false. Meta has integration SDK's for both Unreal and Unity that allow developers to create games that use Meta's hardware. These are real tools that are required for building these virtual worlds. The app store, oculus dashboard, and app labs are also a set of tools developers use to distribute and manage their virtual worlds. Tools that are essential to the creation of a metaverse.
Last, "The quest holds very little market share of virtual world access compared to mobile devices and PC's", again a virtual world is not the metaverse. Compelling virtual worlds must exist before the metaverse, because the metaverse is simply a mechanism to tie all these worlds together. If these worlds did not exist there would be nothing to tie together. Having hardware that one day can access the metaverse is crucial to building up the right types of worlds that have the right type of engagements to be useful in our lives. And while Quest may hold a low market share of overall personal computing devices, the market share it holds over virtual reality is enormous.
This entire video seems to have some resentment towards Meta and just seems very biased and uninformed about what the definition and objectives of the metaverse are.

They already know everything you mentioned in your comment. They know that the road to mass adoption (that is, the next big thing after smartphones) is small factor see through AR glasses. That's why all actors who appeared during the showcases of Meta's vision for the future of the metaverse at their Connect event were wearing normal looking glasses, not VR headsets. VR/XR headsets are nothing but stepping stones on the road for developing both the technology and the ecosystem necessary to achieve their true goal. Apple knows it too and apparently are planning to release a highend XR headset as soon as next year, with the AR glasses rumored to still be 5+ years away.
Meta is not competing with Unity/Unreal (providers of the building blocks) nor with any single application / virtual world (providers of business cases). Their dream is to become to VR/XR what Apple and Google are to mobile phones (providers of the real state where all the business are located): Hardware + software ecosystem (iOS/Android and App Store/Google Play). With that in mind, they should not be compared to Motorola or Blackberry that either did not have this whole ecosystem vision or didn't focus on the consumer market at large, they should be compared to how iOS with it's App Store and Android with it's Google Play Store, the two first consumer oriented mobile platforms, are still the dominant ones to this date. Their goal right now is to get their headset in as many peoples hands as possible to lock them in their platform before the likes of Apple and Google enter this market having the advantage of already owning consolidated platforms.

I think the gig is that the Metaverse will be built around standards that all companies can tie into. Currently, there are plenty of accounts on other platforms that exist, but those platforms are not built to work together as Meta is designing. So when people realize that they cannot take their avatars that they create in Roblox or wherever into the many worlds that are built with cohesive standards they will probably consider moving at some point. Meta is talking about a cohesive network of platforms which takes a lot to create so I dont think the current user accounts or headset races will really matter at that time. So even though Minecraft has like 600 million users they will probably need to use some kind of Meta platform to integrate their users into everything else.

I did appreciate the ending where the VR world was shutdown for 1 or 2 days a week for real life to happen but I can totally see that lasting only a short time because real will be depressing after VR so you would only enter it long enough to eat a little and clean your self up a couple of times per day.

People still need to eat, reproduce, and experience the outside world. What the metaverse fulfills is the socializing need. But then again, you can just go outside and meet your friends. A metaverse where everything is integrated and everyone can contribute to it is an impossibility. If anyone can make anything on it there is no value to anything. If anyone can make anything every time 2 or more people come together you would have to download avatars, mods, etc. the other people have. With connecting millions of people even if each person only had 1 MB (Which is a real low ball number.) of custom content that is a TB for every million people. You would be spending all your time buffering every time someone adds something. If people don't have the exact same hardware some added software might not be compatible with some hardware. Some mods might not be compatible with other mods causing crashes.
Someone has to be in control to keep thing on a manageable level and prevent grieving. A place where everyone can do what they want is only positively viable if everyone in it is trustworthy. So I think Facebook is trustworthy? That would be a BIG FAT NO! If there is a lot of money/power involved no one is trustworthy.
Dreaming is fine, computer games are dreams, but if you lose yourself in a dream because you are hiding from reality, reality will become your nightmare. Fix your reality if you can, dream to give yourself the strength to do so, and don't become someone's boogie man.

If you took the time to fully watch Meta's video on making the Metaverse you'd understand that Meta's Horizon is only a fraction of the metaverse. So saying Meta's Horizion needs to be open source is like saying everyone should be able to do what they want in a building.
Think of the Metaverse like Earth. Horizon will effectively be a country where the rules of facebook apply. You can then teleport to another country for example Decentraland.
Mark has already said that a lot of this is fully theoretical and even said that if you jump from one verse to the other, you will need to be able to carry all your purchases over to each country.
For people saying that there's going to be ads and stuff within the Metaverse... you are correct. Just like billboards and posters in the real world.

So Oculus is my only headset and I cringe sometimes knowing that Facebook is its owner. However, I believe for now this a great and affordable headset to get more people engaged with VR. If Facebook can continue to please it's customers with great VR headsets and experiences, people will probably not care too much about them reimaging themselves as Meta. To my point, Facebook's announcement about becoming apart of (or creating a new) Metaverse is probably a necessary "push" to drive up the competition, which is good for balance and to not create monopolies, and it's also good because a multi-billion dollar company is setting the bar on how lucrative and profitable this world could be. Their announcement will get more companies and individuals interested in the Metaverse.
I'm excited and worried at the same time what this will do to the gaming world because I know companies/studios are trying to make metaverse focused games where players can earn crypto and NFTs for just playing, socializing and collecting items, but will they actually put gameplay and experiences first before $$$. I worry companies like EA (Electronic Arts) are going to join the Metaverse campaign and find ways to screw its customers for profits lol.

Meanwhile, those who want to control the real world have fewer people who will even notice what is going on. Its like a bunch of people on a cruise ship so happy about the meals, entertainment, and meeting new people they didn't notice that a group has taken control of the radio room, and the engine room and is working on way laying the First Mate to seize control of the bridge. The passengers may be happy but the bad guys are taking control of the ship.

In Our Natural State we are Sinners and at Enmity with God, but through the Work of Jesus we can have a Relationship with God. Jesus took Our Rightful Punishment and Suffered and Died on the Cross, Resurrected on the Third Day and Defeated Death. All we have to do is Repent and Believe in Him and what He did with All Our Hearts and We are Forgiven. What Facebook is trying to do is take the social experience of connecting with people from screens to the augmented world. This isn't to say they will have their own and sole meta, the one and onlyz this is just saying they're building a foundation for what they believe is the next step in allowing people to connect on a more personal level even when not in the same room. Basically a web based version of vr chat but now add in the space around you and have it also be fused with this augmented 3D world. Now there are a lot of ethical and moral issues that can arise from this. And theoretically they're too late for that too...
One of the biggest Metaverses there are currently in the VR space is "VRChat", of which the majority of players are using the Oculus vrheadsets, Valve headsets and Vive majorly.
Even though Microsoft has a decent amount of VR products (even though it's not really microsofts specifically), they're barely existent in most VR spaces and Meta indeed has a strong grasp on the VR market.

Mario Bros. Does not qualify as Metaverse.
    Only VR can be Meta.
    2D lacks immersion.
