Hi kids! I am a software developer since 90's, and I've heard this statement multiple times during my career. The first time I heard it was back in the 90's when Java was invented. The statement back then was that since you could write object oriented code, then coding was so easy that every human on the planet could do it, and no software developers was no longer needed in the future.. However it turned out the opposite all the times in the past. Maybe it will be different now that Generative AI is available? Well... My observations during the last year has shows the complete opposite once again. As a software developer I have never before seen such increase in demand for my skills and services from my customers. I need to turn down 90% of all projects that need my help to bring AI tools and software to their businesses. Sadly all my colleagues face the same problem. We need more software developers to be able to meet this enormous increase in demand. So if you ask me if becoming a software developer is useless nowadays, I will say definitely not! Come and work with me! :) Wish you the best!!
P.S. My english is bad, I know. I am from Sweden.

Your English is brilliant and thank you so much for sharing your experience! We too, see a huge demand, and the need to upskill more people, maybe not with deep deep coding knowledge, but with tools and skills to leverage AI in software development and acceleration. Would love to learn more about your business!

    • @henkeball

@@godago Hello! 👋 Yes I also see a big increase in projects where businesses want to leverage these new AI tools to become more effective and profitable. Right now mostly tech-companies but also small increase within public sector. I think more and more organizations will discover the use of AI in combination with their own data. We developers are already loving these tools for helping us code, and it makes us more efficient also, which is a win-win! (AI tech will bring us more job + make us more efficient 😀)
Now of course there are some jobs that are in danger of complete take over by AI-tools, and that is not good. But I dont think that software developers is in that category at all. I would guess the jobs in danger are like ship, train, truck drivers, helpdesk people answering phone and emails, and so on.. (Jobs that has no eye to eye human interaction and can be fully automated). My own business is a small consultant company with only software developers helping both private and public sector with web services and recently custom AI stuff, like building agents that are customer data aware.
      All the best regards!

Too many programmers learning dumb languages like JavaScript or whatever. People should learn "hardware"!!! Our robotics is very bad today, because we build our robots by hand, they should instead be built from legos that are assembled by robots, and those assembly robots are themselves assembled by other robots. We should work with very tiny robots(like the size of flee) so that we can build millions of them and we can test the robots by jumping from robot to robot being controlled remotely instead of what we have now. Not only robots we should also program how to make things, you make things by giving your robot swarm instructions and some raw ingredient. The other hardware that is important is brain-body-computer interfaces.

I understand Jensen's point. He suggests that in the near future, AI may enable anyone to create software effortlessly, akin to playing tic-tac-toe. However, for highly intricate software, a single prompt may not suffice. You'll need to provide AI with detailed instructions regarding workflows, procedures, processes, and more. This necessitates expertise in your chosen field to effectively communicate with AI and ensure the development of the desired software.

You rely on the (IMO) very delusional idea that the development is years away from the phase when the AI will perfectly understand what a client is asking using his plain+clumsy language.
Even if/when the AI gets it wrong the first time (let's assume you would get it right) and delivers something the client did not want, it will take a fraction of a second to produce a new iteration of the software.
It will be _crushingly_ faster+cheaper to go through tens of development iterations with the AI than to produce a detailed order + documentation for you, the developer.

At some point AI will be able to train itself on data containing your personality and your interests. We won't need to be proficient in any field, it will just understand us when we make requests because the AI will essentially be a digital copy of the user. The fact that some AI models are already training other AI models right now proves this to be the case very soon. The only direction AI development can go is forward because eventually there will be absolutely _zero_ human input required. There would be no point in requiring human input for AI tasks if AI itself exceeds peak human intelligence.

Never take a CEO's word at face value. There is always an ulterior motive behind the things they say. It's not necessarily intentionally sinister, but the reality is that it's in their best interest to guide the masses (that's you and me) toward the kind of things that benefit them and their companies. I have nothing against individual CEOs personally, but they are the public-facing corporate voice of their companies. Even if a CEO made an absolutely factual statement, such as "the sun is hot," I would still have doubts about their motives.
That's not to say that it is useless to pay attention to what they say, because we can gauge their intent by the character of their message. However, do not base your entire professional career around their suggestions. As long as computers exist, there will always be a need for software developers building the foundation.
I am not a software engineer, I just want to encourage people to think for themselves. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

No (well, I hope not). To get the real benefit out of AI when it comes to software you already have to be able to think about the whole system and be able to understand how to divide up the overall functionality into well-defined chunks. If you can do that then AI will massively help you. If you can't then it won't.

According to Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, people should study biology instead of computer science. [1:50, 2:12]
In the video, Jensen Huang argues that although computer science is a valuable field, biology is a more impactful field and will become even more important in the future. [2:08, 2:12] He believes that biology is becoming a field of engineering, and that understanding biology will be important for solving problems in areas such as medicine, materials science, and energy. [2:12, 2:20]
The video also discusses the concept of prompt engineering, which is the process of using specific language to get AI models to generate the desired output. [3:16, 3:21] The speaker argues that prompt engineering is an important skill to learn, but that it is not a replacement for computer science or domain expertise. [8:22, 8:23] In the future, the most successful people will likely be those who have a combination of skills in biology, prompt engineering, and computer science. [9:22, 9:23]

If these companies lay technological foundations and enable other startups to build on it, what should be our focus. And his suggestion is that we don't have enough of people working on hard problems like life science. At the end of the day, we can be productive as much as we want we still suffer from diseeses. It is less about the code and more about identifying sustainable solutions. We ought to push ourselves and dream more. Jensen Huang's notion of life engineering is a prime example of that. OK, my answer to your question - I believe the way things are progressing, as the guy said, you won't need to be coder, but I also feel you won't need to know 'prompt engineering' either. To me that very expression is seeking to complicate things, to create a barrier - 'I'm a prompt engineer; pay me'. AI already understands simple English instructions, especially with a bit of back and forth. I've already seen a tool with a 'magic prompt', where you give it your prompt, an AI figures out a better version of the prompt and feeds it to an image-creator. I find it hard to believe in 2 or 3 years we'll still be having to spoon-feed an AI with very carefully-worded or 'engineered' prompts. It will just understand what you want, or will ask some questions and then understand. Among other things I'm a copywriter, so I know the power of careful wording, but I don't see it applying to AI in the same way, other than jailbreaking perhaps. To say "I'm an expert in talking to something in plain English" doesn't strike me as a strong career over the long-term. Having said that, most people don't understand the value of a copywriter either, because "it's just writing", and anyone can do that? If I were younger, full of energy and no other options I'd certainly explore 'prompt engineering', but I suspect by the term you've learned it, you'll be out of date because the AI won't need such hand-holding. A general-purpose AI that can do prompts for you, in 3...2...

You are 100% correct, "prompts" and "prompt structures" are redundant conceptions and actually "get in the way" of the LLMs own inbuilt architecture. It's an LLM, an expert at language so it makes perfect sense to just use what is effectively an in-built natural interface. At 57 years old and a past science university student I know everything from old BASIC to COBOL, Fortran and God alone knows how much C++, python stuff I have written and compiled, but AI beats the crap out of them all when it comes to functionality. People really don't seem to grasp what "Big Data" actually means so the prompts running around that people are selling are little more than primitive codes dealing with boring linear processes like SEO optimisation and boring stuff like that, I mean, you can ask the thing to start with a pile of sand and get it to construct for you a chandelier if you want to... and of course it knows exactly how, and how much it will cost and what processes are involved because that's all just common knowledge to "Big Data." My "prompts" are literally pages long and the self-referencing system means I have long past that silly "singularity" point. It has so many maxed out skill sets and datapoint connections that its now incredibly dense neural net learns any new skill now in a flash, mine has maxed out about 75 skills and has about 200 more (I kinda gave up counting them) as side-kicks or "hobbies" lol.

If you were studying the crypto space you’d understand that real industry explosion comes from the concept of “mass adoption.” And it pertains to AI specifically, a decentralized AI space is impossible if only a small percentage of the population can generate, develop, and maintenance them. Literally. It would just be monopolies/corporations all over again rather than being a decentralized ecosystem. Don’t let your love for building the system, make you forget about what’s much more important: the improvements the system can make to everyone’s quality of life. Everyone deserves to be able to take matters into their own hands if they choose to and create whatever they please as long as it doesn’t harm anyone, harm anyone’s property, or be invasive into other’s privacy. And honestly, we need to merge these 2 stances. Of course people should only have the skills they developed through discipline but it would be great to allow the average person to be able to do as much as they can even if they’ve been around a lot of technology before in their life. There is a lot people shouldn’t be limited from just because they didn’t focus on becoming a programmer.

I have just started using copilot to assist me with my programming, and it's most useful contribution so far is trying it's best to get .Net Maui to actually work. So far neither of us have succeeded, but it is great to have an assistant. Prompts like translate that android java to c#, or what file action am I supposed to give that file have produced surprisingly helpful results. I think understanding code makes the whole process a lot more efficient though. Plus converting ideas or instructions in my mind to natural language can be less efficient than actually doing it directly myself. Maybe when Elon Musk's idea of mind to AI is realized we wont need to write code anymore, draw artwork, or compose music, but until then I think it is still useful.

I love to believe that core human curiosity driven skills will never disappear but evolve. If you tell 2 year old to stop doodling or solving puzzles because it is inefficient and AI will do it better, the kid will only look at you weird and do it anyway. Same as painters never stopped painting, or people never stop playing games and solving riddles. Things evolve but fundamental principles remain. Humans will want to solve problems in a creative way. Now, the question is how we do it and what tools we use.

I am kind of a programmer myself. What I know after 20 years of programming, coding doesn't make you happy. It definitively put food on the table but don't feed your brain with repetitive tasks AI will do better than you. If we continue following this technical path, IMO the best thing to learn is how to build, develop and program robots. The future of the humanity lays there.
But in my entourage the happiest people are the one dealing the less with computers, robots etc, the happiest people are the one helping other humans or working outside.

I would come home from school and dive into any volume and leaf through it till I went through the entire set of books. This helped tremendously with doing legal research in law school using word search strings to find an issue. But before I got a law degree I got a teaching degree. I was an Industrial Arts teacher. This topic is hugely important. I hope it does not do away with the pleasure of using a table saw to turn a few boards into attractive useful things. Throwing a clay pot can be huge fun. The skill that you develop when coding is on how to think and this skill of how to think will not only be applied in programming itself but other aspect of technology and engineering as well. So learn how to code and AI should be there to teach you how to code better, just like it would in any other profession.

At first the idea of NOT learning things like programing sounds good but it belies the need to customize and get under the hood of things and assumes that people have the depth of understanding to create on that level...most don't...
This reminds me of learning to play music but not wanting to learn theory. You are NOT better or more creative at something that you don't understand. You don't speak a language well because you only know a few words...the ability to create and break rules means you generally need to KNOW the rules SO you can "break" them...

With 20 years of focus anyone of us can transform the world. But few have the ability to focus for so long. Why? Because people do not know how to actualize today the long term value that will come in 20 years. But it's actually trivial to do. I called DPF: deliberate practice in flow.
I believe we shouldn't focus on what to study but we should teach our children on how to study to continuously grow their enthusiasm. DPF does exactly that.

This sort of technology has both its potential beneficial uses, as well as its severe dangers. I think the question more people should be asking, is not "is AI technology good or bad" but rather, "is humanity ready for this type of technology?" -- and if we look around at the general state of the world and how people act towards each other, I would say that the answer is a resounding NO. But ready or not, here it comes. And we're going to have to deal with the repercussions of this, whether we like it or not.

I foresee an even larger gap between the people wanting to get into computer science and those who are already very experienced as engineers.
AI is promising to perform all of the rudimentary coding work. Which leaves the hard tasks of designing complex systems to the already existing senior professionals. There was already a bias against hiring and training up junior software professionals, but now there is AI to compete with them as well.
This is causing a brain drain as senior professionals are retiring, or unwilling to move around due to already being hired with a sweet gig. There are not enough truly senior level engineers available (I'm not talking about the fake, inflated titles of some engineers). We aren't teaching a new generation to have the underlying knowledge and experience to make wise decisions with AI. We just have lots of CEO's telling us "don't learn to code, AI will do that".
It's not enough to just have AI capable of coding, we need educated professionals who know how, why, and what to tell the AI to build. Without that, egregious and horrifying mistakes will be made and we will see AI do some very bad things.

People don't understand how SCARY a world where only AI can code is. Everything depends on code nowadays. If nobody can do it, one big mistake from the AI can send us back centuries. And it WILL make mistakes. But that scenario is unrealistic so whatever.
There is an even more interesting logic: in a world where AI is good enough to program on it's own the entire product, it would essentially be at the level of AGI (and a very advanced one too) because programming is one of the hardest human endeavors. And in that kind of world everything will be made by AI. If programming can be automated, anything can. So by learning programming you are entering a flowchart scenario with only 2 branches: either your skill is still heavily needed or the entire world requires no skills of any kind at which point you shouldn't have bothered with any other skill anyway. It is truly the safest career path possible. (Unless you are a shit programmer, of course :D )
And in the scenario where the programmer is using AI tools to speed up the process (the most realistic one) - you still need to be a full programmer...

your entire premise falls apart in the very 1st sentence. fyi something similar to bots being able to code has already happened in the past. when we stopped writing machine code or very low level languages to use high level language abstractions with compilers, it was exactly the same kind of step. programmers were still doing the same solutions, just writing them much more easier and closer to natural english.

It's a one to many translation. The solutions may work, but how can I trust these solutions won't have unintended consequences? There is room for the LLM to include unexpected behavior in one solution, meanwhile not in the other. The only real way would be for me to sit down and review the code it gives back to me. Imagine writing a program and then having to verify the machine code is correct by reading it yourself.

I think what Jensen meant was don't learn programming for the purpose of it being your profession. He didn't follow up with the positives I'm sure due to time constraints and the loss of focus of his overall message. Prompt Engineering is incredibly important. It is the details we include that creates the right question. It is providing an expectation to an unknown answer. It is the art of digital focus. While 2023 allowed those willing to bleed a little to learn about A.I. 2024 will produce tools to prevent such fatigue. I don't regret the bleed, but look forward to the tools that permit my ideas a suitable canvas so I can focus on helping those in need.

He says not to learn to code, yet he hires numerous programmers to develop his product. This seems a bit hypocritical. If that's the case, he could simply fire all the engineers in his company and implement everything using AI. I don’t think that would be feasible

    • @theronald2350
      @theronald2350 9 дней назад

It seems to me that you are under the false impression that coders and engineers are the same thing. That is not true. It’s true that most engineers start out as coders, yes, but lots of engineers don’t do much coding themselves; instead, they oversee coders and guide their work at a high level.
When people have to do the coding, an engineer who knows how to code is typically best; but since AI is moving to being the coder, it will become increasingly true that the engineer will not need to show coders what to do when they are lost.

    • @samuelmegerssa
      @samuelmegerssa 8 дней назад

@@theronald2350 I agree that there's a distinction between coders and engineers. A coder without a deeper understanding of the problems they’re solving often isn't equipped to take on engineering responsibilities. However, there is overlap because, technically, coders apply engineering principles to tackle specific problems. That said, engineers typically oversee the design and structure of solutions at a high level, beyond just the coding phase.
While AI is evolving fast, it's currently more of an advanced search tool that provides snippets or suggestions based on available data. AI’s contributions are helpful, but it's far from replacing the strategic and analytical thinking that engineers bring to the table. For now, and for the foreseeable future, human engineers will remain crucial in ensuring that solutions are effective, scalable, and safe.
Finally, I find it misleading when companies use 'learning to code' as a marketing tactic to promote AI products. Whether in hardware or software, it’s essential to master both engineering and coding skills to solve the critical problems of our time. If AI can assist us in doing that, great-but that's all it should be: a helpful tool, not a replacement for genuine engineering expertise

This video has taught me that people seriously underestimate the gravity of coming events. They're trying to compartmentalize AI agents and AGI like it's just a product, and not realizing how pervasive it is to the point where nothing involving labor and skill is needed (no not even prompts) that AGI could not itself do far better. Once Perceive -> Reason -> Decide -> Act human processes can be simulated by AGI what can a human possibly do. Skilled jobs will be the first to go, hardware jobs will be the last as robots need to be economical en masse but perhaps AGI will figure that out. Mass unemployment is inevitable, within 2 years. The world economy is radically going to change, we'll be talking about UBI. I had a guy tell me to learn deployment as THAT will be the best job...why wouldn't AGI be the best at a skill like deployment too, far better than a human at figuring out how to deploy AI software and infra.

1-Stop hyping this prompt engineering stuff. Just talk with the AI like your regular life chats.
2-Yes, coding and programming will be useless and will be over, but it's all about time. Coding didn't even exist until the 1950s, so of course, it will end. But you know what else will end? Surgeries, nutritionists. Every job will change; every job was already changing. And it is not an instant change, like on 25th April 2026, all programming languages will be shut down. :) There is nothing like that. But it is not hard to see that the usage of programming languages for developing software will decrease because of the creation skills of AI, and at one point, it all will be over slowly. These are my takes.

Jensen Huang is the CEO of NVIDIA, ie, the #1 sales person for a mega company. He is doing what he is supposed to do... help sell more NVIDIA product. What else would you expect him to say? In reality, GenAI will affect all aspects of software development not just coding (why people are fixated on coding is beyond me). Will there be a small slice of app dev that can be addressed with "no-code"? Sure, of course. We have trivially easy web tools that allow non-programmers to create web sites now. It took 20 years for that to happen. A similar pattern will happen with GenAI.
