Just make sure you cut enough off of the bag or it will drag into the holes and cause your outcome to be a wreck. The bag inside of the bag is what I mean to make sure you cut enough off of .
By far the best demonstration of these tips. I see other channels use them and they always look so unfinished and messy. I particularly love your use of the flower tips as a finish. Your video has definitely made me reconsider buying these!
i was thinking the same thing. maybe with the first one she used will not fill the hole. but the others with the holes on the tips will cover it. thats what the holes are for.
Hi Colleen, I've tested that but the center flower opening isn't large enough almost no icing comes out since the pressure is released via the larger side holes. As you pipe and lift you're always left with a large gap in the center of the icing without any center support the whole things collapses and looks very sloppy.
This is, by far, the best demonstration of Russian piping tips I have see. Have seen videos where people just pile on the icing using these Russian tips, and the cupcake ends up looking horrendous. Your technique does an absolute justice for these piping tips.
Marlyn, Thanks for demonstrating the ball tips. I've wondered how they'd look. The twisting technique you used to ruffle the buttercream is super and I particularly appreciate learning how you striped the colors applying them with piping bags. Thanks so much for continuing to demo the results produced from different Russian tips. Keep up the great work!
Aside from the ball tips, the most valuable take-away for me was the fact that you spread your icing onto the Saran Wrap and that you could just drop that into the piping bag. You made my life so much easier!
I picked up priceless tips in this tutorial! The use of Press-N-Seal wrap to make the icing logs is brilliant, and I would never have stumbled upon it because I've never purchased that plastic wrap. Huge thanks! I also like the idea of creating buttercream buttons, sugaring them and freezing them so they can be handled. The rainbow ruffled effect gave me an idea for creating collars for elves, angels, mimes, Santas, using a hollow sphere of white chocolate for the head.
+Montreal Confections : Hello, I checked out your links for Amazon to purchase the tips but, it says that it doesn't ship to Canada. This really confuses me since you are from Montreal. Any feedback would be appreciated. :))
I love the russian tips and love how you explain how to use these new tips. Thank you it is most helpful and so easy. I cannot wait to try them. I will use your buttercream recipe as well. Thank you.
I love the technique of putting the flower in the middle. I bought a set of the flower tips and these ruffle tips and have watched numerous video demos-yours is the most interesting and in depth I've seen so Thank You! I can't wait to play...
I saw this video a few days ago and couldn't help showing it to my mom, both of us love cake decorating, the results are so pretty! Loved them. thank you for sharing and being source of creativity and inspiration
By far this is the best instructional video on these Russian Tips! I've learned so much by your repeated direction, thank you! Now I'm off to challenge these tips..
Those are so cute! And I really love your tip of putting your buttercream into the press and seal Saran Wrap first: thanks for sharing that. Now if only I could NOT eat all the cupcakes I'm going to make, that's the trick.
I feel like when you use the ones with holes in the tops that maybe not putting it up against the cupcake wouldn't leave an open space. Also, I love your icing cylinder technique!

I wasn't able to get the recipe for the butter cream. Can you post that? Amazing demonstration and I love the idea of putting the butter cream on the plastic wrap!
Just ordered a set of the ball tips and flower tips, can't wait to try them out :D Thanks for the tips with the press and seal plastic wrap that's an awesome way to get multiple colors in a piping bag and being able to just take it out and put it in another bag with the flower tips are awesome ^_^
shadowcrash333 Yass! Mine just came in the mail today! I'm so excited..running to get p.sugar and stuff from the store! Great for all my Mother's Day gifts!
Hello from MN! Thank you for the very explicit instructions on exactly how to use these Russian Tips! I was completely lost until I came across your video. My problem is still finding the correct American Buttercream recipe that works with these. After watching several of your videos, I keep hearing "squeezing and rocking, squeezing and rocking, back-n-forth...back-n-forth!"... Lol...! My husband just laughs and shakes his head... Thanks again!
Maybe the ones with the holes at the top don't really do anything because you're blocking them. Maybe if you did a variation of where you incorporate making frosting being pushed out the holes at the top, there might be a difference.
Have some of these tips and couldn't understand how to use them Especially the ball tip.Wonderful, Doing dessert for Church luncheon Sunday........ I like the hole in the middle so I can personalize the flowers. Thanks!!!!
The ball tips with the hole at the end is so there's no hole in the middle when you make those flowers. You just don't push the tip down against the cupcake
very intresting I WAS THINKING OF GETTING SOME OF THOSE TIPS ,BUT NOW I SEE THAT I DONT NEED TO GET ALL ONLY YHE PRACTIAL ONES . THANKS APPRECIATE THE DEMONSTRATION

I LOOOVE this video, so informative and great ideas. I was debating getting these tips but all the videos I saw made me think they were overrated - after watching this I'm buying them right now! Thank you so much.
Great tutorial! Thanks for giving so much detail. I also loved the techniques you used for filling the piping bags. Those rainbow ones at the end were gorgeous!
Gretchen from Gretchen's Bakery did turns with the Russian ball pipping tips too and also took the Russian ball pipping tips and did an up and down motion so there was no hole in the middle showing . Love your videos you did a good job.
Thanks Keloni, I tried that technique as well but I didn't like how the decoration finished off, when I pulled away from the cupcake the frosting didn't end well. I preferred the hole over the broken frosting tops and I found it was too much frosting on the cupcakes with that technique.
This really helps me see how they work. Ive never worked with piping before it was always my mom who did. But now that im a mom of two i wanna be able to do their cakes but im still lousy at applying frosting. But these tricks and tip are great amd easy enough even i should be able to do it.

I think I've watched this video at least 5 times! I love watching you work, Marlyn. You are very creative! I manage a school kitchen and make cupcakes once a month to honor that month's birthdays. I love the multi color piping,so easy to follow. I can watch this all day. Wonderful staff. Thanks
Thanks so much 😊
I never thought about laying the colors on a sheet of sticky wrap before putting in the piping bag. Will definitely use this method in the future.
Samantha Layer you can put it in plain plastic wrap too
Just make sure you cut enough off of the bag or it will drag into the holes and cause your outcome to be a wreck. The bag inside of the bag is what I mean to make sure you cut enough off of .

don't the ones with the star hole in the middle not leave a gap if you rised as you twisted?
That's the point of them. The ones without the gaps on the top aren't meant for doing close circular designs.
*****
so is she using them wrong then? She said both do the same thing.
cnith2 she is using them wrong you are supposed to left up as you squeeze
cnith2 yes 😍😘
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
what happens if you continue to squeeze as you lift off the ball tips? wouldn't it close the whole?
i was thinking the same thing. maybe with the first one she used will not fill the hole. but the others with the holes on the tips will cover it. thats what the holes are for.
Thought the exact same thing. The ones with the opening in the middle may have added to the hole....

Thanks so much, I really appreciate you noticing.
That press and seal trick is mind blowing. No more messy pipping bag!
for single colour filling, pull the piping bag over a cup and fill it that way. way cleaner.
Marlyn, Thanks for demonstrating the ball tips. I've wondered how they'd look.
The twisting technique you used to ruffle the buttercream is super and I particularly appreciate learning how you striped the colors applying them with piping bags.

Agreed! Very thorough, and I think your icing is the right consistency as you've said. Too stiff, and the edges all look ragged. Great job!
I agree with you most of the tutorials are filled with this kind of tips but she didn't
No
Love the technique with the glad wrap, as a beginner this will help me a lot!!
I love how you put the icing on a sheet before placing it in the piping bag, looks so much easier! thanks for the video :).
Yes that is sooo much easier

Hi Janice, I'm glad I was some help to you
The press and seal trick is GENIUS! Thank you for the review and for the amazing tips you just changed my cupcake game!
Those are so cute! And I really love your tip of putting your buttercream into the press and seal Saran Wrap first: thanks for sharing that. Now if only I could NOT eat all the cupcakes I'm going to make, that's the trick.
Glad you enjoyed it I have another cupcake Russian tip video you may also like I do a different marbling in that video

i like how you put what you learned through trial and error so we can know what works best.
I feel like when you use the ones with holes in the tops that maybe not putting it up against the cupcake wouldn't leave an open space. Also, I love your icing cylinder technique!
Your rainbow icing tecnique 3:55 surprised me! I'm a disaster mixing colors. Thanks!!
