You nailed it in my view. I love Old Grand Dad. When my brother and I started experimenting with drinking when we were young, my dad sat us down and taught us how to drink properly and responsibly. His philosophy was that it was better to learn in our home from him rather than from a bunch of our peers. He placed a bottle of Old Grand Dad on the table and then taught us to sip - and not be sloppy or stupid drunks. He taught us to appreciate quality. I also love Buffalo Trace and Four Roses. And I will be adding Elijah Craig and Weller’s to my bar. Thx Leandro.
That's the bourbon I love, but then I am not a connoisseur. I just make it a habit of emptying my brother-in-law's bar whenever he has restocked of that delicious brand.
Picked up up a bottle of Buffalo Trace today. Since our prices in Alberta are a fair bit higher, I've found BT for $35-45. I got my bottle on sale for $31, with a $42 regular price. Almost bought a bottle of Eagle Rare a couple weeks ago, but I was already pushing $300 in my shopping cart.
“Let’s get STAAAARTEEEEEED” lmao these after effects - hearty chuckle out of ten 👍 Buffalo Trace is usually my go-to workhorse Bourbon; I’ll have to look at those other four!
A good friend of mine has a theory that you should use a "cheap" bourbon for shaked cocktails and a good smooth bourbon for stir cocktails. I quite agree...
Every bottle was spot-on! What really shocked me was when you got to the end, Weller Special Reserve, WOW! I actually can drink anything I want, literally (𝒩𝑒𝒶t), I know when it comes to Bourbons it becomes personal, but, WSR was the bullseye, even the oldman at Wellers agree WSR is about as dialed in as it gets.
I wouldn't argue with the Elijah Craig Small Batch or the Four Roses Small Batch, both are regulars in my whiskey cabinet. Haven't tried the Grand Dad in a long time so will have to check it out...my Bourbon along those lines has always been Old Forester, which I call my "egg nog" Bourbon. I could suggest Bulleit as another classic Bourbon that's quite affordable, as is Knob Creek. Neither pretends to be anything it's not. If somebody wants to spent a little more, the Four Roses Single Barrel is very nice, as is Henry McKenna 10 Year Old Single Barrel (when your local liquor store can keep it in stock). The McKenna was very afordable until a few years ago when it started winning awards, and suddenly the price ratcheted up as it became everyone's newest discovery! ;-) Very enjoyable vid!
Dongsheng Han because I’ve mentioned it so much. I could have easily done ten bourbons I love In this price range, but felt it was too many. Maybe for a volume 2. Wanted to use this opportunity to support some others I like
I liked what you said about personal taste and what flavors every person who enjoys Bourbon will experience. No one is wrong when they like or dislike something that is personal to them
WLWeller here in San Antonio . when its available 1.75 at Specs 32$ cash price . i remember in the 80s you could get Weller & Weller water twin packs at Christmas time . Been my favorite for 30+ years .
Any glass can be a whisky glass, it just needs whisky! :) I do like my Glencairns though, mostly because they remind me of one of my best whisky experiences.
Smell with your mouth and nose at the same time. It increases the amount of clean air you get so the ethanol fumes don't get overwhelming. Whiskey Tribe has some good advice on the whole process. Changed my life, especially when trying a new liquor.
I like Wild Turkey 101, too. And the Four Roses ( the first bottle of bourbon I ever bought for myself), and Elijah Craig. I like Woodford Reserve, too. I'm not a huge fan of the wheaters I've tried. On your consistent recommendation, Leandro, Granddad's gonna be my next bottle. Thanks for these five-favorite-values vids. I like lists, and short ones. Helps me get excited about my next trip to the Virginia ABC store. Keep up the good work!
Most of these are quite difficult to get here on the other side of the pond (Netherlands specifically, but assuming the same is true for Europe as a whole). Only one that is commonly available is Four Roses, Ellija Craig is available at a large online seller, the rest must only be available for a premium at specialty shops, if at all!
Bought Wellers Special Reserve for 22.00 about 2 months ago here in Calif. now it is around 75.00 to 140.00. The Wellers 12 year i seen for 85.00 to 170.00. Wellers 107 from 85.00 to 200.00
I really like a Weller old fashioned. I do a Demerara sugar cube, a couple of dashes of angostura, muddle the sugar cube, 2oz of Weller SR, big cube of ice and a lemon twist with a luxardo cherry. I do that sugar because it doesn’t really incorporate and make it very sweet really at all compared to JM’s old fashioned. The lemon and ice is apparently the way the real Pappy used to drink his whiskey and it matches perfectly with a light wheated bourbon like Weller or pappy. It’s not like it’s wildly different than most old fashioneds but it’s certainly enough to tell the flavor of the bourbon is different than a standard rye as the second grain bourbon.
I’d love to be able to find Weller where I live, but basically anything Buffalo Trace is essentially impossible Love the Old Granddad 114 in the background
Where are you located? Many liquor control boards have websites to search all stores in your area. Like me, in ohio. I have ohlq dot com and that lets me search. It’s how I found my weller and my Buffalo Trace!
@@jtmonsman I'm in SC and have the same problem. Buffalo Trace sent me a list of all the stores in the state that they ship to, but I have yet to find a bottle of Buffalo Trace on a shelf anywhere close to me.
I haven't watched this channel in months, but I like this one and the explanation of a bourbon. Elijah Craig, yes; Four Roses, oh yes! Buffalo Trace, meh. I've yet to try Weller but have seen it quite often. I'd been on a gin kick for a while, but my go to is rye.
I still like my Bulleit its perfect for a julep or Sweet Manhattan. But will try these to compare. I have had Woodford Reserve and like it ditto for Basil Hayden. Old Granddad, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Four Roses Small Batch and Weller here I come.
Great video! Couple of comments. You have to search for the Weller. A few years ago, I was still able to find it in Los Angeles for around $30 to $40. Today, it's $60 and up, and not worth it at that price. I was in Georgia a year ago for a wedding, and at a random liquor store, they had a bottle of Blantons for $60 and Weller Special Reserve for $28! Once you are out of the "big cities" look at the local liquor stores, you never know what you will find!
Yeah I know the Weller is allocated pretty sure I address it in the video. Consequently I got the bottle in that video for 23 bucks here in LA. It is possible to find but really it just informs people that if they happen upon a bottle (like you did) for that good price, snap it up immediately
I’m glad you got to sing the praises of buffalo trace! It’s one of my favorite Bourbons. I have a bunch of other bourbons in my barAnd I always seem to go back to it. Great video and I can’t wait to see your tequila episode. I need help with that unfortunately LOL
The only distillery that uses a wood-fired still is "Wood Hat" ... from Central Missouri. The 100 proof "Rubenesque" is very smooth for that strength. ( 750 ml - $44.00 ) When it's finished in Pecan barrels, it becomes 90 proof "Twin Timbers". Their other offerings are all good. In addition to the Bourbons, they also have several versions of Corn Whisky, and a few Cordials.
All good picks. Two of my favorites, buffalo trace and Elijah Craig. I love getting your take on bourbon. My favorite spirit and my favorite bartender.
I bacon fatwashed a Woodford Reserve straight for a video I'm putting up Friday morning. I first tried with Knob Creek straight, but it was blah. I also picked up a bottle of Lot no 40 to see how that would taste, but I haven't tried it yet. These are my first experiences with bourbon and American rye. I have to find smokier bacon, though. I was stuck with whatever's the smokiest thing at the supermarket. I'm north of the border and in a province with a locked-down approach to alcohol availability, so getting some of the stuff on your channel is a bit of a ride.
I would've left Weller SR off as the odds of finding it close to MSRP are slim to none. Evan Williams BiB and Wild Turkey 101 are excellent options. Also, Knob Creek Small Batch. If you wanted to include a wheater, then Larceny would be a great entry-level bottle. Overall, solid list.
Danny Hetherwick omg I’ve been making them and calling them Donkeys! Wild Turkey works great with it but in particular I liked Bastille whiskey, it’s a little less proofy but has more “hair” - funky kick.
I don’t care for Old Granddad in any form, it comes off as fairly harsh and I’m guessing the relatively high mash bill is why. But on the other hand I like Sazerac Rye, so go figure. EJ dropping the age statement allows them to use say 6-8 year old whiskies, so it’s not hard to figure out it increases production and increases the profits. I prefer the age statement, the Small Batch is a bit sharp and Oaked, it’s still a nice whisky, but it’s lost a bit.
I appreciate the tip on getting the nose of a bourbon (or any alcohol I suppose). I always have trouble getting it and I suppose now it's because I go whole snout into it instead of your quarter snout method.

Taste better to me than the Buffalo Trace.
OGD 114, Early Times BIB, Larceny, Old Forester 100, Wild Turkey 101. Fighting Cock needs an honorable mention. It's surprising good for under $20 bucks.
OGD114 is one of my go to sippers. The official gateway barrel proof bourbon. Hope it doesn't go by the way of Weller's and McKenna 10 BiB and magically doubles in price.
It’s insane to buy Weller special reserve for $50 when you can get maker’s 46 for $35 and larceny for $25. That Weller is a $25 bottle at best. If you can’t get it where you live, you really aren’t missing much.
Maybe it’s because I’m a rum aficionado, but I haven’t found a bourbon that tastes good without a mixer...even then, if I don’t have rum, I’d rather have a top shelf gin, vodka or tequila cocktail....but still enjoyed the video!
Nice choices. My favorite here is the Elijah Craig. Tried the Old Granddad 114,, which was a bit intense. Also liked Four Roses, but prefer the single barrel. BTW, wish I could keep my kitchen that neat.
Thanks! The only one of those that I can get easily here in the UK is Buffalo Trace so it's the only one I've tried, although ours is 40% (which I think is 80 proof instead of 90 proof) and is about £18-£23. I like it; nice and light, honey-like. My favourite, though, is Bulleit Bourbon which we can get for about £23-£27. I find it a bit smoother with notes of cherry. I'd be interested to know what you think of Bulleit?...

SeltsamOne yeah can’t speak to prices in Europe but I’m assuming when I do my favorite bottles 50-60 bucks they’ll be even more over there. On the flip side I bet you guys get better prices on scotch
Well if you tune into the main channel tomorrow I’m doing. A little Bourbon history plus production tequniques and rules governing it the. Yeah I’ll do the same for rye

Hey there,
I would love to see a sort of homebar basics series where you talk about different bottles one should have at home.
I’m in the process of organizing a how to build your home bar series. What bottles to stock, how to think about organizing your bar etc...

Old grandad bonded goes for ~45€(1l)
Buffalo trace goes for ~20€ (0.7l)
Elijah Craig goes for ~33€ (0.7l)
Four Roses small batch ~ 31€ (0.7l)
'Weller Special Reserve: not found (and I haven't seen it anywhere)
SeltsamOne yeah can’t speak to prices in Europe but I’m assuming when I do my favorite bottles 50-60 bucks they’ll be even more over there. On the flip side I bet you guys get better prices on scotch
Don't look for 'Old Weller'. Look for 'Weller Special Reserve', THAT'S what is in the video.
@@adamlogan384 Thanks for the correction, I looked for that one but sadly still nothing
True but grab up the old Weller 107 or 12 year of ya find it!
Friend of mine is actually selling me a Bottle of Weller for retail! And I just picked up Malort's Bourbon. So my collection is almost complete. Lol
Jealous! Want to taste the Malört bourbon!
@@freepour will comment back when I taste it. And if decent maybe send you guys a bottle.
How does the four roses select compare to the barrel select
All are great Bourbons. Ryes Next?
Well if you tune into the main channel tomorrow I’m doing. A little Bourbon history plus production tequniques and rules governing it the. Yeah I’ll do the same for rye
@@freepour Very cool, can't wait to see it! Love all your content!
@@freepour Any live for Canadian blended in the pipe? Or do you guys not get any of the good stuff in LA?
editing was very good on this one
Right now my favorite is Balcones pot still Bourbon, though it sells out quickly around here
I dig the list. Would love to hear what cocktails work best with what choice, in the following liquor lists.
This is great, I love it.
I just did a quick search and found a bottle of Weller on sale for $180.
If you ever come to KY they usually have Weller special reserve at the gift shop at Buffalo trace for $30
@@jessepinkston8642 Thank you.
woah
@@jessepinkston8642 My luck is getting better, i found one at uptown for $70 before ship/tax.
Great series!! Thanks
Buffalo Trace is always great.
I have never seen Weller in the wild. Only at a tasting where it wasn't for sale. But I want a bottle.
I've got everything else but the Buffalo Trace but that will soon be added.
Woodford preserve for me.
I ALWAYS have a giant bottle of Evan Williams Black because I can't pass up the value.
Evan Williams Bonded Bourbon is cheap, ubiquitous and very high quality juice. Great for cocktails.
I always use The Glencairn no matter the cost. :-)
