being kenyan i admire your confidence in trying anything manufactured by london distillers
lol
from what i found on a google search the coconut liqour gets the green colour from the green cocount shell that they grind/pulveris at some point of the processe. dont know if its ture
that would make sense. Chlorophyl, right?
I was gonna comment that this is probably likely. I mean, I don't know if it's *true*, but it's a reasonable explanation. Warning: chemistry ahead.
With natural extracts, you can use more intense solvents than just alcohol, and then the solvent is boiled off leaving just the oils. It's possible something like hexane, diethyl ether, or DCM was used, which would extract the color pretty well. The chlorophyll would be the most likely culprit of the color in that case, and looking up images of chlorophyll extract, it looks pretty neon green. But, you'd need a lot of it to make it that green. More importantly, it isn't super water soluble, so you'd likely need to bond it to something more water soluble to be stable in the bottle. I'm not sure what the alcohol content of that is, but the 20-40% range is low enough that it definitely needs help staying in solution.
All that said, I have no idea what regulations there are on the term "all natural" in kenya. Also, chlorophyll is used as a food dye, and is listed as E140 in the EU, so you can research more of that if you're interested.
"Why don't they call it rum" Tell that to Cachaca!
The original is called Amarula! From Zimbabwe 😉
Agreed, try Amarula widely available across US!
Amarula is from South Africa. The name morula is Setswana name
Add me to the list of people interested in a tasting of the other spirits.
Hopefully the Gilbey's is better than what they sell in the states.
I would definitely enjoy seeing the rest of the haul.
Been to Africa last year and seeing the footage from Marius trip brought back so many good memories of my own, thanks for that!
There is a licor from Africa called Amarula I believe, it's really good!
One of the best cream licors on the market - has won several prices also. I thought it was known world wide, but propably cream-stuff is not that popular outside europe?
He pronounced "Konyagi" like an authentic Kenyan 🇰🇪😂😂😂 had me shook
Definitely, if you got the bottles and are stuck with them give them a taste.
The plastic top on bottles is not only to pour more efficiently but to make sure that the product was not altered once it was opened. It is a law rule in some countries. Cheers!
I had not expected, and I really, really enjoyed, the footage from the trip.
Man, how Marius managed to pass the customs with so many bottles in his 20 suitcases!
:@)
Yes please, film more reviews!
As long as you declare it and pay the duty you can bring as much as you want.
As long as they are unopened and sealed you can bring all the bottles you want and they do charge you a fee but if I recall correctly it’s only like one or two dollars per bottle
Marula cream liqueur is sold in Europe under a different brand, and in my opinion it's way more complex and enjoyable than Bailey's/Dooley's. Perhaps this example had the cream go bad? It smells very good if I recall correctly.
Yep, sold as amarula.
I was thinking the whole time that this marula bottle must be a version of amarula, but I guess they’re the same!
I'm a Kenyan bartender. I'd love to see some creative orijin liquor cocktails.
I could send some signature recipes
yes please, send some recipes and info to our email contact@theeducatedbarfly.com
Super content!
Regarding the "red flag" bottle top, personally I hate them. However in Spain they are quite common. I have been told it's adopted as a measurement for stopping bars to put cheaper or lower quality product in a fancier bottle and sell it on a higher price.
I enjoy a lot these tasting videos. Every day is a school day.
We have a lot of counterfeit here. It's a measure to curb that
@@OfftheChainzThanks for the info. Yeah I can understand there is a reason behind it. I guess despite I like it or not I just need to get used to it! After all what's really important is the quality of what we are consuming. Take care and have a good one!
the opening vlog part brought me back to when i visited Masai mara and Lake Nakuru. highly recommended if you have 10k as your travelling budget.
im from kenya, im proud you did Konyagi and KC KANYA CANE
Hats off from Kenya…you have to have a lot of guts to try all those stuff. We in Kenya are afraid of them 😂
Should try to get your hands on Procera Gin. Really quite nice.
I know these are all different liquors, but if you make it down to Seychelles (I spend a lot of time in East Africa), you should check out takamaka rum. Probably the best rum I’ve had. I prefer it to the Caribbean rhum
I wish more reviews were this honest 😂
Nice vid, four out of four stars 👍
"Natural coconut extract, sugar syrup, neutral spirit, water. How the fuck is it green."
I almost spit out my water
if you are Kenyan watching this video..thumbs up
"How is it fucking green?" Hahaha love it. And please taste the rest of those bottles!
beautiful footage Marius, thanks for sharing.
Are you guys still accepting “donations” via Bitters and Bottles?
Yes absolutely :)
@@freepour it's kahawa
Yes! Do another tasting! Those bottles look very interesting
As a South African I have to say that there is no Marula Cream like Amarula. Everything else just tends to be a bad copy.
Amarula is one of the few alcohols I own, I mostly don't drink alcohol at all.
Most have the filter-like plastic on top to prevent spiking of drinks
....At least i know what to expect when i go there...
Please do the video tasting the other bottles! The tasting videos are some of my favorites!
I would love to see another video tasting those other bottles. Just started watching Freepour and love the content!
Warning don't try general meakins spirit from Kenya
You can order the Orjin online to ship to the US for 39.99 for 750ML
Marula liqueur is super common in US liquor stores, just not that brand. The US imported brands are from South Africa where the tree is native, and I think they may be better. Elephant Bar (E-Bar) in California used to have a fantastic Amarula-based cocktail on their menu when I lived there 15 years ago or so, but I just checked and it's off the menu now. It's unique, Baileys-like, but not pungent or anything, so I think that brand/bottle y'all have is either off or just not good. Go look up one of the US imports at a local store, especially Amarula, which is the official brand. A little background: The marula fruit ripens and ferments naturally, then falls off the tree. The animals eat it...and get drunk. This has lead to many amusing nature shows and a great plot point in the film (and eventual classic episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000) Overdrawn At The Memory Bank. The South Africans turn it into a liqueur, and voila. Give it another shot! I'd like to see what you do with one of the many Amarula recipes out there!
That is true, that elephant one can be found everywhere. That's why I picked up this one :)
Had many a drunken night in Tanzania with a bottle of konyagi :)
5:28 Leandro becomes Mr. Krabs
Amarula is super similar to the last one and available at most major liquor stores
Also I live for “that’s fucking terrible I can’t make another sip” on the coffee one, love it
Make a cocktail with Madori AND the green coconut!!!
I had seen the African Spirits (Konyagi, Kenyan Cane and Amarula) in the Marius makes a whiskey sour.
Please keep doing the tasting videos!
I'd like to see you try the other bottles too!
Heh. My wife grew up in East Africa. The locally produced hooch was banana beer, pombe (millet and whatever beer), or gongo (distilled from whatever was around, maize, sugarcane, bananas, cashew apples). It was not what you would call "refined and sophisticated spirits". Every once in a while people would die from the distilled stuff and there would be a big moral panic.
I'm Kenyan and follow your other channel and wanted to warn you about some of these bottles haha Would never touch some of them. Konyagi we only drink when we are broke in college.
lol, it was a little hard to find places to buy alcohol! But then I found Shoprite. I did try to get the more "interesting" looking ones for Leandro to try.
@@freepourI don't blame you really; we don't have many good spirits here and we have most of what we drink imported. I actually think he should give Kenya Cane another shot. I think it's actually made by Diageo here and it is indeed vodka (by taste) although they never call it that.
@Collins Thinwa Yeah, that was a must have.
Konyolo😍🇰🇪❤
Try pisang Ambon(banana liquor )if you want a green color
Looking online you can buy the Orijin as a bitter, and even as a 750. Something tells me the bitters are the exact same drink but branded as a bitter to make them easier to export.
Also add me to the tally for seeing the next video.
Send me the coffee liquor, I wanna taste!
"How's it fucking green?" hahahahah
I am a fan from China, looking forward to another tasting episode! Btw are there any possibility for China spirits or liqueurs getting a featured? Thanks for the great content anyway! Keep up the good work!
Jason Qian thanks for watching! Yes absolutely we’ll taste any spirits we get our hands on really. We will definitely taste spirits from China
I vote yes on the next tasting!
More please
Konyagi🤣🤣🤣
I'm always interested in your tasting notes. Have at it please.
🌍✊🏾🇰🇪
yes for the other video
What is the purpose of the plastic top? It makes it very difficult to pour into a jigger, or I just don't know how to handle it. Sometimes nothing is coming out, only when I flip the bottle vertical and then a lot is coming out.
Taste them and then make a cocktail out at least 4 different Kenyan spirits, getting only to add juice and simple.
I want to see a tasting as well.
Ghostbusters ectoplasm 🤣🤣
I looks like Marius has a job
I suspect he's secretly Chris Morocco from Bon Appetit.
more spirit tasting pls
Kenya Cane. 😅
45/2=22.5
konyagi
Yeah taste the others. Why the eff not?
Nothing beats the south african gins and wines. You guy picked the wrong country
well, we didn't go to the country for the bottles alone. But we'll try to make it down to South Africa sometime
Marius! If you make your way to Israel contact me!!
Be a little more respectful in sharing your OPINION. From where i sit some of your opinions are seriously misplaced indicating you have no idea what you talking about
Do the tasting
PLEASE do another video with all those brandies and other spirits! This is such a fun side channel that gives most of your US viewers (myself included) a good glimpse into what else is being made out there in the world of booze. That way I know what to look out for if I ever travel there again!
The footage from the trip was a really nice addition to the video. The song was nice too and complimented it well. Well done sirs
I need a Marius in my life.
of course we want to see you try the others
I'd like to see another African video
Can you make a side to side comparison between the Marula liqueur and the South African Amarula liqueur?
The Amarula is quite common everywhere and maybe is a good substitute for the one you are tasting now!
Thanks.
Yeah, I've had Amarula before and it's like a sweeter, fruitier Bailey's. I was really surprised to see Leandro's reaction to the one he had.
@@DaveBendit Maybe it's not so popular in the States or in California in particular? No idea! Let's hope he will manage to get a bottle and make a comparison.
Same! I have Amarula on my buy list and now a little unsure. 😄 It's available up here in the Bay Area at Total Wine.
I haven't even seen this one but I'm pretty sure the South African one would be a lot superior. This one looks a bit dodgy
I bought Amarula for a party where you had to bring a wine/beer/liquor from Africa. It was a big hit, like an orangey Baileys.
Definitely want to see another tasting - I really want to know how bad the Hunter's Choice is 😆
Also, what was so bad about the coffee liquor? You just said that you hated it, then moved on.
African liqour is good to Africans....
I don't think I've laughed more in any of your videos. Lol
I laughed out loud too at the close up clips of his tastings
Same here.
I’m pretty sure in Canada, that “red flag” top is on Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur and definitely on Licor 43. Also I have high hopes for the pot stilled brandy
I can confirm that Luxardo Maraschino has that "Red Flag" spout. I even had a 500ml bottle of Brugal Añejo that my folks brought back from the Dominican with that damned spout.
Love it! Yes vote for another.
Thanks for setting the scene, Marius. I really liked that part.
15:44 "I meeeean..." In my head I just went straight to "I meeeeean, I'm sitting here on the bench, I'm sitting here on the group W bench...."
pour more videos that hunters choice sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen.
the trip footage was just awesome. loving the new channel too.
Taste the next bottles! Cant wait for Hunter’s choice!
I too want to see tasting of the rest of them
Watching this from Nairobi drinking konyagi. Really enjoyed this episode
The cane spirit might be trying to be Cachaça. It's still made from cane, but with a different method and only if it made in brazil can it be named Cachaça But since it's not made in the appropriate region, they call it Cane Spirit.
I think... I may like this channel a lot. I'm sober-curious, so this is interesting to me. When I hear about an interesting recipe, I try to find suitable replacements, so listening about these different spirits is particularly fascinating.
I've been debating on starting my own channel that focuses on virgin cocktails.
You gotta try Amarula, from South Africa, it is very very good, Marula is a citrus fruit and in the Amarula it actually goes well with the cream
Random question… noticed you have that Lo-Fi Amaro, was wondering how you felt about it?
I like Origin.
I enjoy the tasting videos but I will say is that it's kind of hard to get excited when I know it's incredibly unlikely that I'll ever try these bottles myself... maybe you could comment on a liquor that's commercially available in the US that would be sort of similar?
I loved the stunning footage of the beautiful African wildlife. Great job, Marius!
You should try kenya cane pineapple
Yessssssssssssss taste away
*Kahawa.. It's swahili for coffee
Keep doing tastings
love me some marula cream
Do the next vid
Isn’t the Marulo Cream just like Amarula from South Africa? I don’t know if that’s a common drink in America but you can buy it in every liquor store here in Europe
it was very Similar to Amarula, and made from the same ingredients
