I need to get a bottle of OGD Bonded to try. Normally I make mine with Turkey 101 bourbon but judging by your results the Grand Dad is worth picking up. Nice video 🥃
Great video Kurt! Can't wait for the 2nd round. My fave up till now was Elijah Craig small batch for an old fashioned, but I have had ones made with Rye Whiskey before, and while I don't dig ryes straight up, they do make a tasty cocktail. I think you hit it, it's the contrast between the spiciness of the rye and the sweet that makes it work. Thanks again!
It never would have occurred to me to try an Old Fashioned with Wild Turkey 101 Rye (or other prominent Ryes for that matter) I'm going to have to give it a try this weekend. Thanks for the great content, as always!
Though I don't like it as a sipping bourbon, I've always found that Maker's Mark is perhaps the best mixing bourbon. It just brings that classic bourbon flavor to a mixed drink while many other bourbons either overpower or get lost in the mix. The other bourbon that I don't like to sip neat but makes a fine mixing bourbon is Evan Williams, the bonus being that its low price also makes it a great well whiskey.
Agree 100% about Evan Williams. I have never had Makers Mark. I’m still new to all this. But based upon what you just said, I think I might buy a bottle.
Kurt, this video was a lot of fun! My wife is a coconut rum foofoo drinker and your wife’s reaction (off camera) to the ryes and bourbons was fun to hear. Take care!
Great video. Old Grand Dad 114 is far and away the best for my palate. I switched to demerara cubes from simple syrup and its a good difference. Need to try the orange biters as I've never had them. Enjoy!!
Interesting comparison. I guess I need to try Old Grandad BIB. A few fellow whiskey friends have mentioned they prefer it to OG114. Nice to include the family in this video!
Awesome video! I love the fact that you included everyone behind the scenes! I always look forward to watching your videos. Maybe you can convince your family to get in front of the camera on the next video. Keep up the great videos.
Given these choices, I would pick Elijah Craig if I am not eating. I like the flavor profile and the price point is perfect for mixing. If I am having a meal, I'd pick the Wild Turkey 101 Rye, as I enjoy spicy food and I feel the rye goes much better with food. I've never been a fan of Old Grand Dad. I haven't used demerara syrup and muddle a sugar cube with the bitters and a splash of water. Great video!
Thanks so much! All the whiskeys we used were solid. I also mix a lot with EC so understand that completely. I think the high rye mash bill of the OG bonded pulled me in lol. Appreciate you checking in!
I never have the same Old Fashioned twice in a row. Maybe I just haven't found the "one". I'm a bourbon, Irish, scotch, rye old fashioned fan. Great taste test, it really highlights how different individual tastes vary.
Great video as usual Kurt! You guys seem so down to earth and it's a pleasure to explore the world of whisky with you. I've just bought a Bulleit rye bottle cause i think it would work pretty well in a Manhattan. What do you think about it? Is it good in an old fashioned ? Maybe neat? Thank you!
Unfortunately I have never had Bulleit rye. I know that sounds weird because it’s such a highly used rye in bars and restaurants. I think a rye whiskey in an OF for some palates is an outstanding choice! The balance of spicy rye and Demerara syrup is unique and delicious!
@@marshallgeorge3819 Thanks Marshall, I've tried it and it's a little bit thin for me, but the classic notes of rye are all there and I've made a pretty good Old Fashioned with rich demerara syrup.
OGD is a great cocktail bourbon. I really enjoy OF 100, but prefer OF Rye 100. I've never had WT 101 Rye, but WT 101 isn't my favorite. Great content!! Not many other people do shows on cocktails. Enjoy your channel a lot!
I make a demerara syrup. You can get demerara sugar on Amazon using whole foods. One bag makes the perfect amount. Mix 2 cups sugar, cup hot water over medium heat until dissolved. Let cool and store in the fridge. Lasts a couple months, and doesn't have all the preservatives and additives as the online stuff...tastes like a toffee honey syrup...delicious
I use a dash of orange bitters, a Gerado cherry ( Walmart brand "premium cherry") with a bit of the juice from the jar/ very dark in color and extremely sweet. Found in the cocktail mixers section of the store. Rittenhouse Rye or some other rye I have laying on the liquor shelf. All to be mixed with ice and strained: cherry reserved beforehand and placed in bottom of glass. My version of the "quickie" Old Fashioned.
Love your videos Kurt. Gives me some great ideas and trying some recipes myself. Made a peach syrup and 1 w/ OGD, 1 w/ Elijah Craig and 1 w/ Old Forrester. OGD was my fav as well but all were great.

This was a fun video. I, personally, prefer to muddle a sugar cube, just because it's traditional and it doesn't hurt that muddling makes a nice tiny bit of showmanship. I love the background music. It's adult and sophisticated. Nice job guys!
Thanks for your encouraging words! Syrup was the quick and easy for these videos but I do have a quit. Since you are a traditional sugar cube guy do you find the cocktail is a bit granular before completely dissolving??
@@slbdrinks Yes, it's a bit granular to begin with but the finished product is not. I dowse the cube with a couple of dashes of Angostura bitters and a splash of water before muddling. I muddle it VERY well, then ad the whiskey and stir. Any graininess is gone by this point. Syrup is fine. there is nothing wrong with that. I have thought briefly about using syrup for ease, but it just doesn't make the same visual effect while building the drink. Once again, your background music is spot-on for cocktails music.
Thank you for the compliment! Appreciate the lesson on proper method for the sugar cube. Truth of the matter is I have never prepared an OF with a cube. I was served one once and it was pretty grainy but probably not prepared correctly.

The first time I made an old fashioned I used basically the same ingredients as here, except I used simple syrup. Of the whiskeys here, I would go with Old Grandad, but the Wild Turkey rye is my preference for a Manhattan.
Only thing I disagree with here is buying simple syrup. Just make it, it’s like 100x cheaper and takes a minute. And you can make your own infused syrups like cinnamon, herbs, earl gray tea, etc.
