Dan wrote this song about an actual experience he had one Christmas Eve in his hometown. After Dan passed away, that former girlfriend went public to share her memory of that night. She only had nice things to say about Dan, as I recall.

We sing Auld Lang Syne at every New Year's party at the stroke of midnight in the US traditionally.

Old Lang Syne is in many Christmas movies (It's a Wonderful Life's ending scene) and is thus seen as a Christmas song by many, so since this was a real event that happened on Christmas Eve between him and his his school sweetheart, he named it Same Old Lang Syne.

His lyrics paint the perfect picture of that actual chance encounter that we all could imagine or perhaps have experienced. Such poignant writing and the music adds extra that emotional element that together is sublime. I think that when he says “Another Auld Lang Syne” he might be referring to the passage of another year. This was Christmas eve and Auld Lang Syne is the song that Scottish and other English speakers sing on New Year’s Eve which was the tune the saxophone player played at the end. The genius of his lyrics are how they reflect the poem’s words, “Should old acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind?” and “We'll drink a cup of kindness yet, For the sake of auld lang syne” [sic: for old times’ sake]. Dan was a fantastic wordsmith, and I miss artists who write and compose music like this. Thanks for your as always great reaction.

You really understood the song so well on first listen. And Dan was very special and multi-talented with a large catalog of music. I saw him many times in concert, both with a band and solo. Amazing live performer. It’s a melancholy experience listening to him now as we lost him too soon.

Auld Lang Syne was set to music over 200 years ago and is traditionally sung at the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve all over the world. I'm surprised that you have never heard it. That melancholy instrumental at the end was the tune for the song.

Another great reaction to another great song. Thank you. As good as this performance is, I prefer the studio version a bit more. By the way - that last bit on the clarinet is the tune to the song "Auld Lang Syne" - typically played on New Year's Eve.

And my absolute all-time favorite song if you so choose to react to it is: "Make Love Stay" the studio version from his album, "Greatest Hits" released in 1983. Good reaction. btw That instrument at the end of the song is a Clarinet.

I think that was a soprano saxophone at the end. Saxophones come in soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. The most common one you see is the alto sax, followed by the tenor sax, which is a little bigger.
